Terranauten

"A secret resistance movement of Drivers and Lodge Masters who oppose the corporations and the Council."
-- Booklet 004

The Terranauts (German: Die Terranauten) are the secret organization of Drivers and Lodge Masters that gives the saga its name. Founded approximately 2475 AD as a clandestine resistance movement within the corporate power structures of the Council of Corporations, the Terranauts fight for the liberation of Drivers from corporate oppression, the protection of Yggdrasil, and ultimately the survival of humanity in a cosmos threatened by entropy and the destructive effects of Kaiser Force. Over the course of 99 booklets, the Terranauts evolve from an underground cell operating within Biotroniks Corporation to a galactic military force, a political faction, and finally the vanguard of a new ecological civilization.

Overview

The Terranauts are defined by their dual nature: they are both a political resistance movement and a community of PSI-gifted Drivers bound by a shared spiritual connection to Yggdrasil, the primeval tree whose Mistletoe Blossoms enable interstellar travel through Space II. In a galaxy dominated by the Council of Corporations -- where Drivers are treated as tools of commerce and their PSI abilities are exploited or suppressed -- the Terranauts represent the principle that Drivers are sovereign beings whose gifts belong to humanity, not to corporate shareholders.

The organization's name combines "Terra" (Earth) with "nauts" (travelers), signifying their identity as travelers from Earth who navigate the stars. But the name carries a deeper resonance: the Terranauts are the inheritors of an ancient covenant between humanity and Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree that chose Earth as the nexus for its interstellar root network. To be a Terranaut is to be both a rebel against corporate tyranny and a guardian of the living connection between humanity and the cosmos.

Referenced in 92 of the saga's 99 booklets, the Terranauts are the organizational backbone of the entire narrative.

Origins and Founding

The Pre-Saga Period (c. 2475)

The Terranauts were founded approximately 2475 AD, roughly twenty-four years before the saga opens. The founding is revealed primarily through the flashback booklets 030 and 031, which depict the political intrigues at Biotroniks Corporation in Ultima Thule that gave rise to the movement.

The key founders include:

  • Mar-Estos, nephew of Growan terGorden and later revealed to be the former identity of Llewellyn 709. As Mar-Estos, he introduced Myriam into Biotroniks, organized secret meetings with the Terranaut cell, and exposed the treachery of Clint Gayheen. His transformation into a Riemenmann -- a super-Driver wrapped in golden PSI-dampening straps -- erased his former identity but not his commitment to the cause (Booklets 030, 031).
  • Myriam (Myriam del Drago / Myriam terGorden), a biologist of the del Drago clan who married Growan terGorden while secretly serving as a Terranaut operative. She coordinated the Yggdrasil Project, deepened humanity's understanding of the primeval tree, and wrote the Book Myriam -- the prophetic text that foretold the coming of the "heir of power" and became the spiritual foundation of the Terranaut movement. She died in childbirth around 2475, declaring her son David terGorden to be "the son of Yggdrasil" who would "free humanity" (Booklet 031).
  • Algol Kuhn, a Terranaut operative killed during the rescue of Myriam from her abduction by Clint Gayheen's agents (Booklet 030).

The founding cell also included operatives named Santiago Lema, Carlos Lema, Shadow, and Jonsson -- though Jonsson was later coerced by Gayheen into becoming an informant (Booklet 030).

Motivations for Founding

The Terranauts arose from the intersection of several pressures:

  1. Corporate oppression of Drivers: The Council of Corporations, led by Biotroniks Corporation and the Kaiser Corporation, treated Drivers as economic assets. Their PSI Powers -- essential for navigating spacecraft through Space II -- were exploited for profit while the Drivers themselves were denied autonomy and political representation.
  1. The mistletoe monopoly: Biotroniks Corporation controlled the production and distribution of Mistletoe Blossoms, the organic material harvested from Yggdrasil that Drivers required to navigate Space II. This monopoly gave Biotroniks an effective stranglehold on all interstellar travel.
  1. The threat of Kaiser Force: Asen-Ger warned the early Terranauts that the Kaiser Corporation was developing Kaiser Force -- an artificial, overdimensional energy source designed to replace Drivers and mistletoes entirely. This technology, which tears open Space II, would prove catastrophically destructive to the cosmic ecology.
  1. The covenant with Yggdrasil: Through Myriam's communion with Yggdrasil and the guardianship of Merlin III, the founders understood that the primeval tree was an intelligent cosmic being that had chosen humanity as its intermediary. Protecting Yggdrasil was not merely an ecological concern but a cosmic responsibility.

Mission and Purpose

The Terranauts' mission evolves across the saga, expanding from political resistance to cosmic stewardship:

Phase 1: Liberation (Booklets 001-012)

Phase 2: Survival and Resistance (Booklets 016-050)

  • Survive exile on Rorqual, a planet trapped between dimensions
  • Build a military force capable of challenging the Council of Corporations
  • Steal ships and resources from the Council
  • Forge alliances with alien species, particularly Cantos and the Genessaner
  • End the threat of Kaiser Force by demonstrating its cosmic destructiveness

Phase 3: Reconstruction (Booklets 050-079)

  • Cultivate new Yggdrasil seedlings to restore Driver space travel (the Second Driver Space Age)
  • Negotiate a political settlement with the Council of Corporations
  • Resettle the Silent Drivers -- former PSI-gifted individuals stripped of their powers
  • Manage the transition from corporate rule to a new political order

Phase 4: Cosmic Mandate (Booklets 080-099)

Structure

Leadership

The Terranauts do not operate under a rigid hierarchy but rather through a network of Lodge Masters, senior Drivers, and trusted operatives. Key leadership positions include:

RoleHolder(s)Notes
Symbolic leader / Heir of PowerDavid terGordenProphesied by the Book Myriam; reluctant leader who gradually assumes the role
Co-leader and strategistAsen-GerCo-founder, Lodge Master, Summacum. Favors diplomatic pragmatism
Military commanderLlewellyn 709Super-Driver who commands major operations and fleet actions
Deputy chairman (later)Asen-GerServes as deputy chairman of the Driver Council on Sarym (Booklet 070)

The Lodge System

The fundamental unit of Terranaut organization is the Lodge -- a group of Drivers who combine their PSI Powers to navigate spacecraft, generate PSI-shields, or conduct psionic operations. Each lodge is led by a Lodge Master. Multiple lodges can combine into a Super-Lodge for large-scale operations, such as the defense of Zoe (Booklet 012) or the escape from Rorqual (Booklet 022).

Key lodges within the Terranauts include:

The Superlodge of the Terranauts

For critical engagements, the Terranauts form a Superlodge -- a combined psionic formation of several thousand Drivers. The most famous Superlodge is the one formed for the defense of Zoe against Valdec's Kaiser-Transmitter (Booklet 012). Though this Superlodge ultimately cannot withstand the Kaiser Force, its formation demonstrates the Terranauts' capacity for coordinated psionic warfare on a planetary scale.

Cell Structure

In the pre-saga period and during times of greatest persecution, the Terranauts operate through a cell structure -- small groups of operatives who know only their immediate contacts, reducing the risk of exposure. Myriam's cell in Ultima Thule (Booklet 030) is the earliest known example. Later, the organization maintains cells on planets throughout the galaxy, including Syrta (where Dime Mow, Octopus Swon, Lorilay Franticek, and Buster Gaunarson operate in Booklet 001) and across the territories of the Council of Corporations.

Drivers and PSI Abilities

The Terranauts are, at their core, an organization of Drivers -- psionically gifted humans who can navigate spacecraft through Space II, the alternate dimension that enables faster-than-light travel. Understanding the Terranauts requires understanding the nature of Drivers and their abilities.

What is a Driver?

A Driver is a human being who possesses PSI Powers -- parapsychic abilities that allow them to perceive and manipulate Space II. Drivers are essential for interstellar travel because only they can guide ships through the dangerous energies of Space II, using Mistletoe Blossoms harvested from Yggdrasil as a navigational focus.

PSI Abilities

Terranaut Drivers possess a range of psionic capabilities:

  • Telepathy: Long-range mental communication. Llewellyn 709's galaxy-wide PSI call (Booklet 001) is the saga's most dramatic demonstration.
  • Telekinesis: Moving or manipulating objects through mental force. Llewellyn reprograms computer systems telekinetically (Booklet 075).
  • PSI-Shielding: Creating protective barriers against energy weapons and psionic attacks. The Super-Lodge PSI-Shield on Zoe (Booklet 011) is a planetary-scale example.
  • Hypno-fields: Inducing altered states of consciousness in others.
  • PSI storms: Unleashing uncontrolled psionic energy that can paralyze entire armies (Booklet 001) or distort reality itself (Booklet 045).
  • Space II navigation: Guiding spacecraft through the alternate dimension, the Drivers' core function.
  • Lodge fusion: Multiple Drivers combining their PSI powers for amplified effects.

The Mistletoe Connection

All Driver abilities are amplified by proximity to Yggdrasil and its Mistletoe Blossoms. The mistletoes serve as a biological interface between human PSI potential and Space II's energies. The Biotroniks Corporation's monopoly on mistletoe production is therefore not merely economic but existential -- without mistletoes, Drivers cannot fully access their abilities, and interstellar travel becomes impossible.

Riemenmanner (Strapmen)

The most powerful class of Driver is the Riemenmann -- a being whose PSI abilities have been amplified to lethal levels, requiring golden straps to contain the radiation emanating from their body. Llewellyn 709 is the saga's primary Riemenmann; Valhala 13, bred by the Gray Guards as Llewellyn's double, is another. When a Riemenmann removes his straps, the resulting PSI-storm can reshape reality itself (Booklet 045).

Major Operations

The Syrta Rebellion (Booklet 001-002)

The Terranauts' public emergence. Llewellyn 709 and operatives including Dime Mow, Octopus Swon, and Lorilay Franticek rescue David terGorden from the Kaiser Corporation branch on Syrta. Llewellyn sends a galaxy-wide PSI call declaring David the Heir of Power and summoning all Drivers to Syrta, igniting the galactic rebellion.

The Insurrection (Booklet 004)

Following Valdec's pogrom against Drivers on Terra, Llewellyn 709 warns Drivers via secret broadcast and sparks violent clashes with the Gray Guards. David, Llewellyn, Lithe, and Flint escape Earth with the help of Merlin III and Norwy van Dyne.

Defense of Yggdrasil (Booklets 006-007)

The Terranauts activate the Omega Program to defend Yggdrasil from the Gray Guards. Asen-Ger creates PSI illusions of fleeing Driver ships to draw pursuit away from the Holy Valley. David escapes with the Yggdrasil Seeds.

The Dead Spaces Breakout (Booklet 009)

Llewellyn 709 leads a breakout from the Dead Spaces -- PSI-shielded bunker prisons beneath Berlin. The escapees attack the energy satellite ES-50 and rescue David with the help of Queen Mandorla.

Defense of Zoe (Booklets 011-012)

The Terranauts form a Super-Lodge of several thousand Drivers to defend Zoe, the planet of the Lodge Masters, against Valdec's Kaiser-Transmitter. The defense fails; Zoe's sun Spilter goes nova, destroying the planet. David, Asen-Ger, Queen Mandorla, and a handful of survivors escape in the TASCA.

The Rorqual Exile (Booklets 016-058)

Stranded on Rorqual, a planet trapped between dimensions where PSI abilities are suppressed, the Terranauts build a fortified settlement on Pitcairn (Booklet 029) and gradually rebuild their military capability. Key operations during this period include:

  • The launch of the TASCA from Rorqual and the interception of the courier ship OMEGA-32 (Booklet 022)
  • The commando raid to steal Driver ships from a Council base in the Cheviot Hills, Scotland (Booklet 024)
  • The liberation of imprisoned Drivers on the prison planet Veldvald (Booklet 028)
  • The Shondyke mission to free Yggdrasil's cutting, culminating in Llewellyn 709 killing the Super-Driver Ares 17 in psionic combat (Booklets 035-036)

The Valhala 13 Crisis (Booklets 045-048)

Valhala 13, a Riemenmann doppelganger bred by the Gray Guards, captures Llewellyn 709 and infiltrates the Terranauts. Lyda Mar detects the impersonation. Claude Farrell and Lyda rescue the real Llewellyn from Quostan. The crisis is resolved when Valhala 13 is sacrificed to close a dimensional rift (Booklet 048).

The Battle for Earth (Booklet 050)

The Terranauts' defining diplomatic and military triumph. When Cantos the Genessaner arrives warning that Kaiser Force's destruction of the planet Xaxon has drawn the attention of the Entities, the Terranauts forge an alliance with Chan de Nouille -- the Gray Guards' own commander -- against Valdec. David uses PSI-focused mistletoe power to destroy the alien ship threatening Earth. The Council agrees to abolish Kaiser Force.

The Second Driver Space Age (Booklets 059-060)

On Adzharis, David cultivates a new Yggdrasil seedling and produces the first new Mistletoe Blossoms, which he gives to Narda del Drago. This act inaugurates the Second Driver Space Age, restoring Driver space travel after years of Kaiser Force dependency.

The JAMES COOK Expedition (Booklets 090-095)

The Terranauts dispatch the JAMES COOK to Genessos and the Galactic Archive on Hephaistos. Llewellyn 709 leads the delegation to the Pyramid of Knowledge, thwarts an Entity, and secures the Connex Crystal. Frost's betrayal destroys the JAMES COOK and reveals the Terranauts' position to Valdec.

The Reality Switch and the Duel of Dreams (Booklets 097-098)

Within the Reality Switch, a precosmic entity orchestrates the final confrontation between David and Valdec. David's selfless sacrifice to save the Paracletic Madonna triggers the victory of the "White" reality -- a hopeful future of cooperation -- over Valdec's dystopian "Black" timeline. Llewellyn confronts Valdec in the void as the Black reality dissolves.

The Eco-Shock (Booklet 099)

In the finale, the Terranauts gather at Ultima Thule as Cosmic Spores transform Earth into a green, living world. David announces Valdec's death and the end of corporate rule. The Drivers form a Lodge and send a galaxy-wide PSI call -- echoing Llewellyn's original call from Booklet 001 -- and the Entities acknowledge that David is keeping his cosmic promise. David departs aboard an Organ-Sailer to eliminate Kaiser Force forever.

Relationships

With Yggdrasil

The Terranauts' relationship with Yggdrasil is the spiritual foundation of the organization. Yggdrasil is not merely a resource to be protected but an intelligent cosmic being who chose humanity as its intermediary. The primeval tree's Mistletoe Blossoms enable Driver space travel, and its Yggdrasil Seeds carry the potential to extend the interstellar root network to new worlds. Myriam's communion with Yggdrasil -- injecting herself with its distillate and achieving a transcendent bond with its intelligence -- prefigures David's own cosmic connection. The Terranauts' ultimate mission is to serve as guardians of the covenant between Yggdrasil and humanity, ensuring that the tree's gifts are used for symbiosis rather than exploitation.

Key Yggdrasil-related events:

  • Defense of Yggdrasil in Odrodir (Booklets 006-007)
  • Discovery of Yggdrasil growing on Skull Island on Rorqual (Booklet 017)
  • Liberation of Yggdrasil's cutting on Shondyke (Booklets 035-036)
  • Cultivation of a new Yggdrasil seedling on Adzharis (Booklets 059-060)
  • David's journeys to the Old Forest, a solar-system-sized collective of intelligent plants (Booklet 094)

With the Council of Corporations

The Council of Corporations -- the ruling body of Earth, composed of the leaders of the most powerful corporations -- is the Terranauts' primary political antagonist. The Council treats Drivers as economic resources, monopolizes mistletoe production, and supports Kaiser Force as a means of eliminating Driver autonomy entirely. Under Max von Valdec's chairmanship, the Council launches pogroms against Drivers, imprisons them in concentration camps (the Dead Spaces, the Moon Dungeons), and strips them of their PSI abilities.

The Terranauts' relationship with the Council is not simply one of opposition. Asen-Ger consistently advocates for diplomatic engagement, believing that the Terranauts cannot prevail through militancy alone. David himself becomes GeneralManag of Biotroniks A/S and is elected Lord Colonel of the Council (Booklet 076) -- the very position once held by Valdec -- demonstrating that the Terranauts seek to transform the system from within rather than merely destroy it.

With the Gray Guards

The Gray Guards are the elite military-police force of the Council of Corporations, the Terranauts' most frequent combat opponents. Yet the relationship is more nuanced than simple enmity. Queen Mandorla defects to the Terranauts after saving David's life, becoming one of their most reliable members. Chan de Nouille, the Gray Guards' Commander-in-Chief, turns against Valdec and becomes a critical ally. Kristan Percott, a Gray Lodge Master, frees Asen-Ger from the Moon Dungeons on Chan de Nouille's orders. The saga repeatedly demonstrates that the Gray Guards are not monolithically evil but are themselves divided over the morality of Valdec's regime.

With the Entities

The Entities -- ancient supercivilizations existing at a cosmic scale -- threaten humanity with a Final Strike in response to Kaiser Force's destructive effects on the fabric of Space II. The Terranauts' cosmic mission is to prevent this Final Strike by demonstrating humanity's capacity for responsible stewardship. David's journey to the Central World of the Entities, his retrieval of the Connex Crystal, and his defeat of Valdec in the Duel of Dreams are all undertaken in service of this goal. The saga ends with the Entities acknowledging that David is keeping his cosmic promise.

With the League of Free Worlds

The Terranauts forge an uneasy alliance with Edison Tontor and the League of Free Worlds during the middle saga (Booklets 039). However, Asen-Ger grows alarmed by Tontor's ruthless methods and thirst for power, recognizing in the industrialist a potential mirror of Valdec's tyranny. The alliance collapses when Tontor's Gravitron creates a catastrophic black hole, destroying Tontor himself.

With the Genessaner

Cantos, a member of the alien Genessaner species, becomes one of the Terranauts' most important allies. He arrives on Rorqual warning of the cosmic consequences of Kaiser Force and accompanies the Terranauts to Earth. The Genessaner provide crucial intelligence about the Entities' intentions and the galactic ecology that Kaiser Force is destroying.

Conflict with Max von Valdec

The saga's central conflict is between the Terranauts and Max von Valdec -- GeneralManag of the Kaiser Corporation, Lord Colonel of the Gray Guards, and Chairman of the Council of Corporations. Valdec embodies everything the Terranauts oppose: corporate tyranny, technological hubris, and the subjugation of living systems to mechanical control.

Key stages of the conflict:

  1. The Pogrom (Booklet 004): Valdec scapegoats the Drivers for the failure of his Kaiser Force demonstration, launching a galaxy-wide persecution.
  2. The Destruction of Zoe (Booklet 012): Valdec uses the Kaiser-Transmitter to destabilize Zoe's sun, destroying the Drivers' political center.
  3. The Stripping of Powers: Valdec systematically strips captured Drivers of their PSI abilities, creating the tragedy of the Silent Drivers.
  4. The Hate Plague (Booklets 046-049): A bioweapon engineered to target Drivers, using Llewellyn 709's former identity as Mar-Estos as a trigger.
  5. The Kaiser of Berlin (Booklet 089): Valdec declares himself "Kaiser of Berlin" and launches Kaiser Force attacks on Adzharis to destroy the new Yggdrasil.
  6. The Duel of Dreams (Booklet 098): The cosmic climax in the Reality Switch, where David defeats Valdec by sacrificing himself to save the Paracletic Madonna, ensuring the victory of the hopeful "White" reality over Valdec's dystopian "Black" timeline.

Appearances

The Terranauts are referenced in 92 of the saga's 99 booklets, making them the most consistently present organizational element in the narrative. Only a handful of booklets -- those focused entirely on alien civilizations or cosmic events independent of the Terranaut struggle -- omit direct reference to the organization.

Themes

Freedom versus Corporate Control

The Terranauts exist because Drivers are treated as economic assets rather than sovereign beings. Their struggle against the Council of Corporations is fundamentally about the right of sentient beings to control their own gifts and destinies.

Nature versus Technology

The central tension of the saga is embodied in the conflict between Yggdrasil (the living, organic source of space travel) and Kaiser Force (the artificial, destructive alternative). The Terranauts champion the biological covenant with Yggdrasil against the mechanical hubris of Kaiser Force.

The Reluctant Revolution

The Terranauts do not seek power for its own sake. David repeatedly resists his prophesied role. Asen-Ger favors negotiation over violence. Even Llewellyn, the most militant leader, countermands orders to massacre prisoners. The Terranauts' revolution is driven by necessity, not ideology -- and their ultimate goal is not to rule but to create conditions in which ruling is no longer necessary.

Sacrifice and Endurance

From Myriam's death in childbirth to Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern's sacrifice at the Pyramid of Knowledge to David's self-sacrifice in the Duel of Dreams, the Terranauts' history is written in sacrifice. The organization endures not through single acts of heroism but through the stubborn refusal of its members to stop fighting, building, and hoping.

The Circle Closes

The saga begins and ends with a galaxy-wide PSI call. In Booklet 001, Llewellyn 709 calls the Drivers to rebellion. In Booklet 099, the Drivers form a Lodge and send a call that the Entities themselves acknowledge. The Terranauts' journey -- from a secret cell in a corporate palace to the vanguard of a cosmic transformation -- is the story of a promise made, tested across a hundred crises, and finally kept.
