-- Booklet 060, "Duel in Solitude"

Thorna, also known by her full name Thorna Torgeson, is a recurring companion in Die Terranauten, appearing across 9 booklets spanning the Rorqual and Adzharis arcs. A young woman native to Rorqual who escaped captivity under the Green Flyers, she becomes one of David terGorden's most steadfast companions -- notable among the Terranauts for possessing no PSI abilities whatsoever. Her courage, instinct for danger, and deep knowledge of Rorqual's feudal world make her an indispensable member of David's inner circle throughout some of the saga's most perilous adventures.

Biography

Origins on Rorqual (c. 2493-2499)

Thorna arrived on Rorqual approximately six years before her first encounter with David terGorden, having come aboard a misdirected Driver ship. She was captured and held in a colony of girls kept prisoner by the Green Flyers, a winged race native to Rorqual. The colony served the Green Flyers' purposes, and Thorna endured years of captivity before managing to escape. Fleeing through the dangerous gas-river known as the Nebelland, she was rescued by Orson Orson, captain of the merchant vessel North Wind, which was heading to the northern reaches of Rorqual to trade for ore (Booklet 016).

Chained to David -- The Rorqual Trilogy (2499-2500)

Thorna's life changed irrevocably when the North Wind rescued David terGorden and Claude Farrell after their lifeboat crashed during a storm. In the port town of Hayvant, Thorna's curiosity about the newcomers drew her to follow David's group. When Debussy, captain of the Polaris, attacked David and Claude, Thorna was imprisoned alongside David. Debussy, seeking to exploit the Terranauts for his own escape from Rorqual, took the group to the Mango Archipelago and forced David and Thorna -- chained together -- to search for Asen-Ger on O'Broinsland/Devonary, escorted by Debussy's men and the Green Flyer Vasik (Booklet 016).

When Vasik abandoned them, revealing that the island was embroiled in war, David and Thorna were captured by Justin O'Broin. Together with Justin, they planned an escape by hot-air balloon. David rescued Zandra van Heissig and Claude Farrell from Debussy, and the group escaped in the balloon -- though Justin was killed by a crossbow bolt during the flight. The balloon drifted northward toward the Northern Mountain Range, carrying David, Thorna, Zandra, Claude, and Rianna Ross into the next stage of their odyssey (Booklet 016).

The group crash-landed in a tulip forest and was promptly captured by the "Children of the Black Dragon," bandits led by the depraved Markham, who intended to sell them as slaves. The merchant Marcel d'Guinne purchased the group along with Layla Chalid. During this period, Thorna revealed crucial information about the Green Flyers and the colony where she had grown up -- intelligence that proved valuable as the Terranauts navigated Rorqual's complex power dynamics. When d'Guinne betrayed Markham to the city watch in Aliruth, chaos erupted. Thorna was among the women captured by the city watch and given to Rogier, the ruler of Aliruth, who took them toward his summer palace near Tambourg and eventually to Skull Island (Booklet 017).

Guide and Terranaut (2501)

After the Terranauts established their base on Pitcairn, Thorna's knowledge of Rorqual made her an invaluable guide. When David embarked on an expedition with Zandra van Heissig, Claude Farrell, and Thorna to explore Rorqual, she served as their expert on the planet's peoples and dangers. They encountered the Ha'adri people and learned about the Walch and Hayvant. Thorna guided the group through encounters with the Green Flyers, and they rescued Guy La Ramee, whose wife had been abducted. Her firsthand experience as a former prisoner of the Green Flyers gave her unique insight into their culture and the darker truth that they were being controlled by Banshees (Booklet 029).

The Quest for Yggdrasil's Seed (2587)

When David terGorden returned to Rorqual via THE SHIP to find the seeds of Yggdrasil, Thorna's sharp instincts once again proved critical. She observed David's arrival and attended the conference where his plans met resistance. Noticing a mysterious observer spying on the proceedings, she warned David of a potential spy -- correctly suspecting that Max von Valdec had an agent among the Terranauts. When David departed in a Ringo, guided by an unknown force, Thorna secretly stowed away, refusing to let him face the dangers of a transformed and war-torn Rorqual alone (Booklet 051).

The Ringo was attacked by rat-like creatures and crashed. David and Thorna were rescued by Layla Chalid and Golan Asgayr of the Islahami. They joined the Islahami caravan, found passage on a two-master with Marcel d'Guinne, survived the attack of a Roulian (a whale-like creature that destroyed the ship), were captured by the Arcanians (a fanatical monastic order on Saryfa who planned to sacrifice them), and escaped by inciting a revolt and commandeering the Arcanians' airship (Booklet 051).

Aboard the airship SOMASA, Thorna continued to travel with David and Claude Farrell through turbulent skies, surviving a mutiny led by Toland Ryker, navigating the Black Mountains, enduring attacks by raven-like birds, and crashing in the Valley of the Green Flowers. There, the group met Yella, a member of the ancient Helpers, who warned of a traitor -- a warning that proved true when Nordstrom was revealed as a Shadow agent who stole the seeds of Yggdrasil (Booklet 052).

Into the Heart of Rorqual (date unknown)

Thorna was among the Terranauts who journeyed with David to the Great Abyss and entered the hollow interior of Rorqual. Inside, they discovered a massive accumulation of wrecked spaceships -- a "space trap" controlled by the World Tree called Tau Ulema. While David communicated with the Tau Ulema, Thorna joined Nayala del Drago and Bo Nilsson on a reconnaissance mission to explore a disc-shaped spacecraft inhabited by beetle-like creatures called Coleoptera. The three became lost inside the alien ship, discovering the Coleoptera's primitive culture and livestock before eventually finding their way back to rejoin the main group. The young Terranaut Bo Nilsson developed a crush on Thorna during this mission (Booklet 058).

The Adzharis Campaign (c. 2497)

On Adzharis, where David went to cultivate a new Yggdrasil seedling, Thorna's lack of PSI abilities made her tragically vulnerable. Queen Stella by Starlight, the blind military commander loyal to the banished Valdec and driven mad by the moon Chrama's radiation, psionically interrogated Thorna. Under Stella's psionic manipulation, Thorna revealed that David was alone in the north, undergoing a trial by the dragon-witches to protect the seedling. Stella ordered the other Terranauts detained and dispatched a search party after David (Booklet 060).

Despite lacking any psionic defenses, Thorna managed to send a mental cry for help before losing consciousness -- an act that awakened Asen-Ger and the other Terranauts to the danger. She later regained consciousness and escaped, eventually being found and rescued by Vandel and Trut of the Dragon Clan. Thorna sought out Nayala, who defied the Witch Council to help David. Together they flew to David's location, though Stella's forces followed. The crisis culminated in a confrontation where the combined forces of the Terranauts and the Dragon Clan defeated Stella's soldiers and the traitor Patran Grevenhart, securing the new Yggdrasil seedling and inaugurating the Second Driver Space Age (Booklet 060).

Themes and Significance

Courage Without Powers: Thorna is one of the saga's most striking examples of bravery in the absence of extraordinary abilities. While the Terranauts are largely defined by their PSI powers and Driver abilities, Thorna possesses none. Her value lies in her practical knowledge of Rorqual, her instinct for danger, and her willingness to put herself in harm's way for those she cares about. When she is psionically interrogated by Queen Stella by Starlight on Adzharis, her lack of defenses makes the violation all the more brutal -- and her ability to send a cry for help despite it all the more remarkable.

The Rorqual Native: Thorna represents Rorqual itself within the Terranaut group. Having arrived on the planet as a child and survived years of captivity under the Green Flyers, she understands the world's feudal societies, its dangers, and its peoples in a way the stranded Terranauts cannot. Her knowledge of the Green Flyers -- their habits, their colony system, and ultimately their control by Banshees -- provides critical intelligence that shapes the Terranauts' strategy on Rorqual.

Loyalty and Devotion: Thorna's arc is characterized by a fierce, unspoken loyalty to David terGorden. She follows him from the moment they are chained together in Hayvant, stows away on his Ringo when he departs into danger, and endures psionic torture rather than willingly betray his mission. Multiple sources describe her as an "admirer" of David, suggesting a devotion that goes beyond simple camaraderie -- though the saga treats this dimension with restraint.

Survivor Identity: From her escape from the Green Flyer colony to her rescue from the Nebelland, from being sold as a slave to being interrogated by a mad queen, Thorna's story is one of repeated captivity and escape. She is defined not by victimhood but by her refusal to remain captive -- a quality that mirrors the Terranauts' own struggle against the forces that seek to control and exploit them.

Thorna appears in 9 of 99 booklets of Die Terranauten, spanning the Rorqual arc (Booklets 016-029) and the Yggdrasil quest (Booklets 051-060).
