Rorqual is a mysterious planet located within Space II, the counter-universe used for faster-than-light travel. It is one of the most significant settings in the Die Terranauten saga, serving as the secret base of operations for the Terranauts during their protracted war against the Council of Corporations and Max von Valdec. Far more than a mere refuge, Rorqual is revealed to be an artificial construct of immense antiquity -- a component of the Intercosmological Anti-Entropy System created by the Ancients and maintained by the Steerers to combat entropy across the cosmos. At its heart lies the Tau Ulema, a sentient World Tree that functions as the planet's controlling intelligence.
Rorqual is notable for its powerful PSI-suppression field, its red-tinged skies, its inland "seas" of gas rather than water, and its hollow interior filled with the wreckage of countless trapped starships. The planet features prominently in over twenty booklets of the saga and is the primary setting for the so-called "Rorqual Trilogy" (booklets 016, 017, 018) as well as the climactic "Heart of Rorqual" arc (booklets 057, 058).
Physical Description
Surface Geography
Rorqual's surface is dominated by a feudal, pre-industrial landscape beneath a distinctive red sky illuminated by a "black sun" -- actually a Black Hole that serves as a gateway between Space II and normal space. The planet's geography includes:
- Scarlet Sea -- A vast inland body filled not with conventional water but with a gas-like substance, giving it its distinctive crimson appearance. It is navigable by sailing ships, and its islands form the backbone of Rorqual's maritime civilisation.
- Mango Archipelago -- An island chain within the Scarlet Sea, including O'Broinsland/Devonary, site of feudal warfare and the slave trade.
- Skull Island -- A remote island formerly inhabited by the Children of the Black Dragon, descendants of stranded Gray Guards. Contains graves with dried Mistletoe.
- Hayvant -- The principal port town and commercial hub, repeatedly devastated by wars and creature incursions over the course of the saga.
- Aliruth -- The largest trading city on Rorqual, ruled for a time by the merchant-lord Rogier.
- Tambourg -- A city near Aliruth, location of Rogier's summer palace.
- Nebelland -- A gas-river region where shipwrecked travellers and fugitives are sometimes found.
- Northern Mountain Range -- A formidable barrier that no human had ever crossed on foot before the Terranauts' arrival. Beyond it lies the frozen north.
- Yanda -- The last urban outpost of civilisation in the north, a frontier mining settlement.
- Pitcairn -- An island that becomes the Terranauts' main fortified base on Rorqual, established by Asen-Ger.
- Saryfa -- An island inhabited by the Arcanians, a fanatical monastic order that practices human sacrifice.
- Peijing -- A coastal city threatened by sentient "living islands" that rise from the gas sea.
- Argyle -- A continent on Rorqual.
- Green Valley -- A region where the Terranauts are based after the destruction of a mammoth tree.
- Great Abyss -- A colossal whirlpool at the centre of the seas where all waters originate and drain, surrounded by a ghost fleet of trapped ships. It serves as the passage from the surface to Rorqual's hollow interior.
The Hollow World
Rorqual is a hollow planet. Its interior, accessible through the Great Abyss, contains a massive accumulation of wrecked spaceships from across the galaxy -- a "space trap" controlled by the Tau Ulema. The hollow world contains:
- The Tau Ulema itself, the sentient World Tree at the planet's core
- A Pilot's Station orbiting beneath the inner surface
- The wreck of the EPSILON-37, a Council super-freighter, largely intact
- A disc-shaped spacecraft inhabited by Coleoptera, beetle-like creatures with a primitive culture
- Countless other derelict vessels drawn in by the space trap over millennia
The hollow interior is constructed from PSI-Matter, confirming Rorqual's artificial origin.
The PSI-Blockade
Rorqual's most distinctive and strategically significant feature is its powerful PSI-suppression field. This field blocks or severely inhibits the PSI abilities of Drivers and other psionic individuals who set foot on the planet. The blockade means that:
- Drivers cannot use their psionic powers for navigation, combat, or communication while on the surface
- Ships approaching Rorqual experience instrument failures and navigational anomalies
- The suppression field is generated by the planet itself as part of the Tau Ulema's control mechanisms
- Brief, localised exceptions occur -- such as when David terGorden is bitten by a winged creature, temporarily lifting the block (booklet 029)
- The arrival of Kaiser Force vessels near Rorqual causes shockwaves that awaken dormant phenomena at the planet's heart (booklet 046)
The PSI-blockade serves a dual purpose: it protects Rorqual from detection by hostile psionic forces, but it also renders the Terranauts vulnerable by stripping them of their greatest advantage.
History
Ancient Origins
Rorqual was created by the Ancients as part of the Intercosmological Anti-Entropy System, a galaxy-spanning mechanism designed to combat the heat death of the universe. The planet was placed in Space II and equipped with the Tau Ulema, one of several sentient World Trees scattered across the cosmos (others include Yggdrasil on Earth and the Ro Ulema on Veldvald). The Steerers, powerful cosmic beings, were tasked with maintaining the system. Over aeons, the Tau Ulema's space trap drew in vessels using pro-entropic drives -- particularly Kaiser Force ships -- collecting them in the hollow interior as part of the anti-entropy protocol (booklet 058).
The planet also became a refuge for lost souls -- the Banshees, spirits of the dead trapped in Space II, who haunt the surface and can possess living beings (booklet 030).
Pre-Terranaut Settlement
Before the arrival of the Terranauts, Rorqual was home to a complex feudal civilisation of humans -- descendants of shipwrecked travellers and stranded colonists drawn to the planet over centuries. This population developed a pre-industrial society characterised by:
- Maritime trade along the Scarlet Sea, with merchant captains like Orson Orson, Debussy, Marcel d'Guinne, and Captain Lostrillas
- Feudal lordships such as the O'Broin family on O'Broinsland/Devonary and Rogier's dominion over Aliruth
- Slavery and banditry, including groups like the Children of the Black Dragon led by Markham
- Nomadic warrior clans, notably the Islahami led by Chalid and later Hrassan Chalid
- The Ha'adri people in the south
- The Arcanians, a fanatical religious order on Saryfa
- Descendants of Gray Guards on Skull Island, including Old Markham and his mentally impaired son Mark Markham
Metal is exceedingly scarce on Rorqual, making it a precious commodity and the basis of much of the planet's trade economy.
The Green Flyers and the Varnha
The Green Flyers are a winged alien race native to (or long established on) Rorqual. They maintain colonies where they abduct human women and are feared by the surface population. The Green Flyers are governed by the Varnha, their Thought-Masters -- an ancient psionic caste that has tragically fallen under the control of Banshees, the soul-parasites of Space II. The former president Torrister Lark, now a Banshee, controls Green Flyer operations from within. David terGorden makes contact with the Varnha and learns of their tragic history and their species' impending extinction (booklet 029).
The Terranaut Era
First Contact and the Rorqual Trilogy (Booklets 007-008, 016-018)
Rorqual first enters the narrative through prophecy and vision. In booklet 007, the spirit of Myriam terGorden advises David terGorden to seek Yggdrasil in space and flee to Rorqual. Lithe, daughter of Merlin, repeats this command: David must take the seeds of Yggdrasil and flee to Rorqual. In booklet 008, David is briefly transported to Rorqual through Space II, where he entrusts a medallion containing Yggdrasil's seed to a mysterious girl before being returned to Earth.
The main Rorqual arc begins with booklet 016. Following the destruction of Zoe by Valdec's Kaiser-Transmitter, David terGorden, Asen-Ger, Mandorla, and other Drivers escape in the courier ship TASCA. During a jump into Space II, David's subconscious memories of Rorqual interfere with the transition, pulling the ship towards the planet. The TASCA's instruments are destroyed. Two lifeboats are launched: Asen-Ger's disappears, while David's experiences the "black sun" phenomenon before crash-landing.
David is rescued by the merchant ship North Wind and encounters the feudal world of Rorqual for the first time -- its scarce metals, its pirates, its slave trade. He meets Thorna, a young woman who escaped a Green Flyer colony, and Debussy, a ruthless sea captain. Across booklets 017 and 018, David navigates the politics of the Scarlet Sea, battles the Children of the Black Dragon, encounters Yggdrasil growing on Skull Island, and ultimately reunites with Asen-Ger in the frozen north after storming Raghan's mine. Rianna Ross is killed by Green Flyers during this arc, and Justin O'Broin dies helping the group escape.
Establishing the Terranaut Base (Booklets 022, 028-031)
In booklet 022, David and his companions repair the TASCA lifeboat and reach the mother ship in orbit. They learn three critical facts from the dead Drivers Morgan and Terry (whose minds briefly possess Mark Markham): Rorqual exists within Space II, the black sun is a Black Hole gateway to normal space, and the planet's PSI field caused their initial crash. Rorqual now becomes the Terranauts' permanent base of operations, with Asen-Ger constructing a fortress on the island of Pitcairn.
From Rorqual, the Terranauts launch liberation missions across the galaxy -- freeing imprisoned Drivers from Council prison worlds (booklets 028, 029) and supporting rebellions on planets like Ginger (booklet 022) and Aqua (booklet 033). The planet's location in Space II provides a near-impregnable sanctuary, as Kaiser Force ships cannot easily follow.
During this period, David explores Rorqual's deeper mysteries. In booklet 029, he encounters the Ha'adri people, investigates the Green Flyers, and discovers that Banshees -- souls trapped in Space II -- have been controlling the Varnha. He is contacted by the spirit of Merlin II. In booklet 030, David is possessed by Merlin III and travels over a thousand years into the past within Rorqual's strange temporal flux. Merlin explains that "Rorqual is stirring with too many PSI-gifted minds" and that the planet is "a home for lost souls."
The Hate Plague Crisis (Booklets 046-048)
Rorqual's security is breached when Ennerk Prime, Onnegart Vangralen, and Lyda Mar return from Sarym through a Black Hole gateway. The Kaiser Force drive's threshold field causes a shockwave that "awakens something ancient at the heart of Rorqual" (booklet 046). Worse, the three Terranauts have been unknowingly infected with the Hate Plague, a virus engineered by Hermano Lotz on Sarym to activate upon contact with Llewellyn 709's PSI signature.
Valhala 13, a Riemenmann double of Llewellyn 709, infiltrates Rorqual and attacks the Terranauts, seemingly killing David terGorden and escaping with Claude Farrell, Angila Fraim, and Sirdina Giccomo. The Hate Plague spreads. In booklet 047, the CYGNI unexpectedly emerges near Rorqual, and a Gray Guard attempts to launch a plague-infected Ringo at the planet, but it is destroyed. In booklet 048, Valhala 13 awakens and is forced by Queen Ishiya to help spread the Hate Plague on Rorqual. The Closing of the Gate (Booklets 050-052, 054-058)
The most consequential period in Rorqual's history begins when Cantos, a Genessaner, warns the Terranauts that Kaiser Force's side effects have caused the destruction of the planet Xaxon and that alien civilisations are preparing retaliatory action against humanity (booklet 050). David terGorden and Cantos depart for Rorqual to plant Yggdrasil's Seed.
However, the situation on Rorqual has deteriorated catastrophically. In booklet 051, David arrives to find the dimensional gate closing, wars erupting across the surface, the environment becoming hostile with red fogs, monstrous creatures, and warring factions. Hayvant is burning. Aliruth is consumed by fighting. A Shadow agent -- The Agent -- has infiltrated the Terranauts, seeking the location of Yggdrasil's seed.
The planet seals itself off entirely in booklet 056, trapping the Terranauts inside. This forces Asen-Ger to seek help from the dragon witches of Adzharis to reach David terGorden, who is stranded on the now-isolated world.
In booklet 052, David meets Yella, a member of the Helpers -- the ancient servants of the Steerers -- who reveals the history of the world-trees and warns of a traitor. Olgar Nordstrom, a Shadow agent, steals Yggdrasil's seeds. Yella dies, but with her final breath speaks of "The Great Abyss."
Voyage to the Heart of Rorqual (Booklets 057-058)
In booklet 057, the dimensional gate closes permanently, and the Terranauts are trapped. Asen-Ger and Narda arrive with Nayala del Drago and her dragon Sufnor. Yggdrasil briefly contacts David, revealing the location of the Great Abyss -- the place where the seas originate. Nayala retrieves the stolen seed from Nordstrom. The Terranauts take the ship Maryjane and navigate through sentient living islands and a ghost fleet before plunging into the Great Abyss.
Booklet 058 is the climactic revelation. Inside the hollow world, the Terranauts discover the space trap -- the vast graveyard of ships collected over aeons. They explore the EPSILON-37 super-freighter and encounter the Coleoptera. David terGorden communicates directly with the Tau Ulema, which reveals:
- Rorqual is part of the Intercosmological Anti-Entropy System
- It was created by the Ancients and maintained by Steerers
- The planet is made of PSI-Matter
- The space trap targets ships using pro-entropic drives (particularly Kaiser Force)
- David is the "Heir of Power," destined to play a key role in the system
The Tau Ulema demands Yggdrasil's seeds. When David refuses, it unleashes robots against the Terranauts. A fire breaks out, threatening the Tau Ulema itself. David negotiates: he will extinguish the fire if the Tau Ulema ends hostilities on the surface and lifts Rorqual's isolation. The Tau Ulema agrees, and Nayala del Drago summons a massive storm to quench the flames. The Tau Ulema then transports the Terranauts to the TASCA in orbit around Adzharis, where David will plant Yggdrasil's seed (booklet 059).

Political Structure
Rorqual has no unified government. Its human population is organised into:
- Feudal city-states -- Aliruth, Hayvant, Tambourg, and Peijing are independent trading cities, each ruled by local strongmen or merchant princes
- Nomadic clans -- The Islahami roam the interior as warrior-traders
- Pirate kingdoms -- Sea captains like Debussy and bandit leaders like Markham control stretches of the Scarlet Sea and its islands
- Religious orders -- The Arcanians on Saryfa maintain a theocratic enclave
- The Green Flyer territories -- Autonomous zones controlled by the winged aliens and their Varnha masters
- The Terranaut enclave -- After their arrival, the Terranauts establish a fortified base on Pitcairn under Asen-Ger's direction, forming the closest thing to an organised military presence on the planet
Beneath all of this, the true "ruler" of Rorqual is the Tau Ulema, whose PSI field and space trap mechanisms shape the entire planet's existence, though this is unknown to the surface inhabitants.
Technology and Economy
Due to its location in Space II and the PSI-suppression field, Rorqual exists at a pre-industrial technological level:
- Metal scarcity -- Metal is the most valuable commodity; its possession determines wealth and power
- Sailing ships -- Maritime transport relies on wind-powered vessels navigating the gas seas
- Hot air balloons and airships -- Rare but significant; Justin O'Broin builds one (booklet 016), and the Arcanians construct the cylindrical airship SOMASA (booklet 052)
- Beast-riding -- The Islahami use Barries, large bear-like dogs, as mounts
- Slave economy -- Human trafficking is widespread, with the Green Flyers abducting women and feudal lords trading in captives
The Terranauts introduce limited advanced technology -- Ringos (tracked vehicles), orbital ships, and communication equipment -- but these are constrained by the PSI blockade and the scarcity of resources.
Cosmic Significance
Rorqual's true importance transcends its role as a Terranaut hideout. It is a node in the Intercosmological Anti-Entropy System, designed to:
- Trap pro-entropic vessels -- Ships using Kaiser Force drives, which accelerate entropy, are drawn into the hollow world's graveyard
- Maintain cosmic balance -- The Tau Ulema and its Steerer oversee processes vital to the universe's long-term survival
- Guard the secrets of the Ancients -- The Helpers, the Tripsychogon, and other entities within Rorqual carry knowledge of the galaxy's deep history
- Serve as a waypoint in Space II -- The Black Hole "black sun" connects Rorqual to normal space, making it a dimensional crossroads
The revelation that David terGorden is the "Heir of Power" destined to play a central role in the anti-entropy system reframes the entire Rorqual saga as not merely a survival adventure but a cosmic drama of universal stakes.
