Character First: 012 - The Supreme Colonel's Gambit

Onnegart Vangralen

Status: Active -- traveling with David terGorden aboard the Collector after departing Last Sleep

"He is haunted by memories of a previous deportation to Siam-Sin."
-- Narrator, Booklet 040

Onnegart Vangralen is a recurring Driver and Terranaut in Die Terranauten, appearing in 14 of the saga's 99 booklets. A stocky, temperamental, and resilient veteran, Vangralen is introduced during the galactic persecution of the Drivers and goes on to survive exile on Sarym, crash-land on the hellish planet Arioch, and join David terGorden's cosmic journey aboard the Collector. He is one of the saga's most enduring supporting characters -- a dependable field operative who appears across three major story arcs spanning decades.

Biography

The Persecution of the Drivers (c. 2499)

Onnegart Vangralen first appears on Siam-Sin, a colony world in the Assyrbrun system, during Max von Valdec's systematic campaign against the Drivers. While Ennerk Prime witnesses the Gray Guards suppressing a Driver strike on Yenderson and Suzanne Oh survives the destruction of her ship on Volonder, Vangralen observes the Gray Guards herding Drivers into a facility where their PSI abilities are forcibly stripped away. This traumatic experience on Siam-Sin leaves a lasting scar; it is later noted that Vangralen is "haunted by memories of a previous deportation to Siam-Sin" when he faces exile again years later (Booklet 012).

Despite this persecution, Vangralen joins the Terranauts, the underground resistance movement of outlaw Drivers fighting against Valdec's Council. He becomes a trusted operative, participating in commando missions and sabotage operations across the stellar empire.

The Starship Thieves (c. 2500)

When David terGorden leads a daring commando raid on Earth to steal Driver ships from Council storage, Vangralen is among the twelve Terranauts who infiltrate the planet via container ships. He participates in the assault on a Council base in the Cheviot Hills in Scotland, where Asen-Ger and the Terranauts -- disguised as Arbiters -- fight through Gray Guard resistance to reach the hangars. The operation succeeds: the Terranauts board two Driver ships, the LASSALLE and the GARIBALDI, and escape into Space II, a critical victory that helps restore the Terranauts' depleted fleet (Booklet 024).

Sabotage on Naria and Exile to Sarym (c. 2500-2501)

Vangralen's next major mission pairs him with Ennerk Prime, Suzanne Oh, and Lyda Mar for a sabotage operation on Naria, a colonial planet in the inner sector. The four Terranauts successfully plant bombs in a Gray Guards supply depot, but during their escape, they run into an undisrupted shock field and are captured. Cecile Aman, a Gray Guards Kommandant, interrogates them about David terGorden and a supposed "hypno-block" in their minds. When the interrogation yields nothing, Aman orders them deported to the penal planet Sarym (Booklet 040).

During transport aboard the Kaiser Force ship XS-571, Vangralen and his companions are put into deep sleep, but not before sending a psionic tracking pulse to the SONNENWIND, a Terranaut ship that follows them into Space II. When the experimental Seeker navigation device malfunctions aboard the XS-571, developing a form of consciousness after merging with a Space II "soul complex," the Terranauts are awakened and asked to form a Driver Lodge to control the device. Lyda Mar establishes a crucial connection with the Seeker's consciousness and anchors a return command -- a connection that will prove vital in later events. However, upon arriving at Sarym, the group discovers that the planet emits radiation that suppresses PSI abilities, rendering them powerless (Booklet 040).

Survival on Sarym/Surin (c. 2501)

Dumped unceremoniously on a white sandy beach by the Gray Guards, the four exiled Terranauts face immediate danger: hostile flora, armored lizards, and a world designed to neutralize their greatest assets. Vangralen -- described as "stocky and prone to anger, but also makes jokes" -- proves his worth as a survivor. The group is rescued from an armored lizard by Derb Ransih, a green-skinned Mediator of the native Surines, who leads them to a village where they meet Damon Credock and Aschan Herib (Booklet 041).

As the Terranauts attempt to rally the Surines to help them contact a returning courier ship, Vangralen accompanies the group on their journey to the general assembly. During the expedition to the Maritime Coral City on the southern continent, Vangralen is separated from the main group -- along with Suzanne Oh and Aschan Herib -- by an infestation of Dream-hooks, bizarre creatures that induce dream-like states (Booklet 042).

Struggling through the jungle of Sarym's South Continent, Vangralen is captured by lizard-like robots and taken to a secret Kaiser Force research station commanded by Hermano Lotz. There, he is subjected to a virtual reality interrogation designed to extract the location of Rorqual, the Terranauts' hidden base. Vangralen provides his captors with "technical expertise" but resists revealing critical intelligence. The genetically engineered super-Drivers Prometheus 93, Isis 24, and Phonix 17, imprisoned at the same facility, sabotage the interrogation by overloading the psycho-hood, freeing the Terranauts from their mental blocks (Booklet 043).

Vangralen, Lyda Mar, and Ennerk Prime are subsequently imprisoned together at Lotz's station and subjected to psycho-interrogation. What they do not know is that Lotz has infected them with a deadly virus -- the Hate Plague -- engineered to activate upon contact with Mar-Estos (the consciousness of Llewellyn 709). Lotz then orchestrates a staged prison break, allowing the Terranauts to "escape" and carry the virus back to Rorqual. During the breakout, Damon Credock is killed -- a devastating blow to the group and to Lyda Mar personally. Vangralen helps commandeer a Ringo shuttle and, after evading pursuit through an asteroid field, the group contacts the Seeker-controlled courier ship and boards it for the journey through Space II to Rorqual (Booklet 044).

Return to Rorqual and the Hate Plague Crisis (c. 2499-2500)

Vangralen, Ennerk Prime, and Lyda Mar return to Rorqual aboard the courier ship BERLIN, navigating through a Black Hole gateway with the help of Lyda's connection to the mutated Seeker. Their arrival triggers catastrophic consequences: the Hate Plague virus activates, spreading through the Terranaut base and causing uncontrollable rage and violence. The revelation that Lotz orchestrated their escape specifically to use them as biological weapons is one of the saga's darkest betrayals (Booklet 046).

During the crisis that follows, Vangralen serves as a member of the Driver Lodge aboard the BERLIN, supporting the Terranauts' efforts to counter Valdec's fleet and obtain the antidote. He participates in the tense confrontation near the Black Hole, where Narda takes command of the BERLIN and impersonates David terGorden to deceive Valdec. When the Seeker-Consciousness takes control of Valdec's ships, Vangralen is part of the Lodge that maintains the psionic link (Booklet 048).

In the aftermath, Vangralen -- alongside Ennerk Prime -- helps Claude Farrell aboard the GARIBALDI and plays a role in delivering the antidote that saves Asen-Ger and the other infected Terranauts on Rorqual (Booklet 049).

Arioch's Inferno (c. 2503)

When the CYGNI crashes on Arioch, the hellish companion planet of Sarym, Vangralen and Ennerk Prime are stranded in one of the saga's most hostile environments: a world of high gravity, methane-ammonia atmosphere, crystal cyclones, and deadly Crystal Devils. The crew of the crashed CYGNI -- informally known as "Vangralen and Co." -- is scattered across the planet's surface (Booklet 062).

Vangralen and Prime encounter fellow survivors Han Harian and Goliath from the CYGNI, and attempt to reach a crashed Kaiser Force battleship for supplies. They face lethal creatures, acid hail, and the constant threat of the environment. When the battleship's crew, led by the Gray Guard captain Maron Lumis, proves hostile, and the battleship is subsequently destroyed by an earthquake and volcanic eruption, the survivors -- both Terranauts and Gray Guards -- are forced to cooperate. Guided by Goliath's pet Kuschelmutz and the native storm-sailor Oinji, the group discovers a coral city with a breathable atmosphere and the planet's PSI-Aura. There, they are reunited with Suzanne Oh and Aschan Herib, who had been transported to Arioch years earlier by a petrified Yggdrasil tree (Booklet 062).

Vangralen is described in this booklet as "a veteran Terranaut with PSI abilities" and "a skilled telepath" despite the harsh conditions, as well as "temperamental" -- a trait consistent with his characterization throughout the saga.

The Cosmic Journey (c. 2503-2504)

When David terGorden and Narda crash-land on a nameless planet housing the Buds of the Tree, Vangralen is among those who rescue them. Alongside Ariane terWilson, Goliath, and Ennerk Prime, Vangralen fights off the native Klippensturzer led by the power-hungry Kadir, who seeks to send people into the Traumstatt, a dangerous plant labyrinth. When Narda is captured by Kadir, Vangralen joins the combined rescue team -- David, Suzanne Oh, Aschan Herib, Ariane, Goliath, Ennerk, and the dissenting native Janan -- in a mission to free her (Booklet 087).

In the saga's final events on this world, now revealed as "Last Sleep," the Renegades -- insane former Buds of the Tree -- awaken and begin possessing the Terranauts. Vangralen survives a fall into a chasm alongside David terGorden, and the two encounter Schon-Duft, a Bud of the Tree who reveals that David is the "Bearer of the Monochord." Together, David and Schon-Duft confront the Renegades, with Schon-Duft sacrificing herself to transform them back into a World Tree and avert an entropy catastrophe. Vangralen departs Last Sleep aboard the Collector with David and the surviving Terranauts, heading for the "Old Forest" to uncover the truth about David's destiny (Booklet 088).

Relationships

Ennerk Prime

Vangralen's closest and most enduring partnership. The two Drivers are nearly inseparable across the saga: they are exiled to Sarym together (Booklet 040-044), return to Rorqual together (Booklet 046), crash-land on Arioch together (Booklet 062), and fight side by side on the nameless planet of the Buds of the Tree (Booklet 087). Both are described as temperamental -- Ennerk is "choleric and impulsive," Vangralen is "prone to anger" -- making them a volatile but dependable pairing. Where Ennerk tends to lead, Vangralen provides technical expertise and steadfast support.

Lyda Mar

Vangralen serves alongside Lyda Mar during the Sarym arc (Booklets 040-046), sharing the ordeal of capture, exile, interrogation, and the unwitting infection with the Hate Plague. Lyda is the group's crucial asset -- her connection to the Seeker consciousness is what enables their escape -- while Vangralen provides practical and physical support. The death of Damon Credock during the escape from Lotz's station is a tragedy that affects the entire group, but Lyda most of all; Vangralen is among those who carry on despite the loss.

Suzanne Oh

Another long-term companion from the Sarym exile. Vangralen and Suzanne are separated together from the main group by Dream-hooks on Sarym's southern continent (Booklet 042-043), and they are both reunited near the PSI-Aura on Arioch after a long separation (Booklet 062). Suzanne, along with Aschan Herib, has been stranded on the nameless planet for two years by the time David arrives (Booklet 087), and she and Vangralen are again part of the same party.

David terGorden

Vangralen's relationship with David is that of a loyal soldier to his commander. Though they do not interact closely in the early saga, their bond deepens on Last Sleep, where the two fall into a chasm together and survive, encountering Schon-Duft and the revelation of David's cosmic destiny as the "Bearer of the Monochord" (Booklet 088). Vangralen is among the Terranauts who follow David aboard the Collector for the journey to the Old Forest.

Hermano Lotz

Vangralen's captor and tormentor on Sarym. Lotz subjects Vangralen to virtual reality interrogation (Booklet 043) and later infects him -- along with Ennerk Prime and Lyda Mar -- with the Hate Plague virus as part of a scheme to destroy the Terranauts from within (Booklet 044). Lotz's manipulation represents one of the most insidious betrayals in the saga: the Terranauts believe they have won their freedom, unaware they are carrying a biological weapon back to their own base.

Maron Lumis

The Gray Guard captain whom Vangralen first encounters as an adversary on Arioch, where Lumis attempts to attack the CYGNI survivors (Booklet 062). By the time of the nameless planet, Lumis and his rogue Gray Guards have formed an uneasy alliance with the Terranauts, though Lumis still schemes to use David terGorden for his own escape (Booklet 087). The relationship between Vangralen's Terranauts and Lumis's Guards reflects the saga's recurring theme of enemies forced into cooperation by hostile environments.

Abilities

  • Telepathy: Vangralen is described as "a skilled telepath" (Booklet 062), capable of contributing to psionic operations and Driver Lodges.
  • Driver Lodge Participation: He serves as a member of Driver Lodges -- groups of Drivers who combine their PSI abilities to navigate Space II or achieve collective goals (Booklets 040, 048).
  • Technical Expertise: Noted as providing "technical expertise during the escape" from Lotz's station (Booklet 044), suggesting competence with spacecraft systems and field operations.
  • Combat and Sabotage: A trained commando capable of infiltrating enemy bases (Booklet 024), planting explosives (Booklet 040), and surviving hostile combat situations.

Notes

  • Vangralen is one of the few Terranauts who appears across all three major phases of the saga: the Driver persecution and resistance (Booklets 012-024), the Sarym/Hate Plague arc (Booklets 040-049), and the cosmic journey (Booklets 062-088). This gives him one of the longest narrative spans of any supporting character.
  • His physical description -- "stocky" and "temperamental" -- is consistent across multiple booklets and multiple authors (Andreas Weiler and Robert Quint both write him this way).
  • The informal designation "Vangralen and Co." for the CYGNI crew suggests he held a leadership position among the ship's Terranaut contingent.
  • A character named Sulaina is described as "a fellow Driver who avoids Vangralen," hinting at interpersonal tensions that are not further elaborated in the main booklets.
  • Vangralen's oxygen capsule running critically low is noted as a specific detail during the Arioch survival arc, underscoring the extremity of conditions on that planet.
  • The Explosive Rifle -- described as "an antiquated weapon carried by Vangralen" -- suggests he favors practical, old-fashioned equipment over high-tech alternatives.
  • Vangralen's experience of the Driver persecution on Siam-Sin (Booklet 012) and his subsequent exile to Sarym (Booklet 040) mean he endures forced deportation twice in the saga -- a pattern that reinforces his characterization as a survivor who persists through repeated institutional violence.

Onnegart Vangralen appears in 14 of 99 booklets of Die Terranauten. He is one of the saga's most persistent supporting characters, a reliable Terranaut veteran whose arc spans from the Driver persecution through the cosmic journey to the Old Forest.
