Concept First: 042 - The Gatherer

PSI-Aura

"A psionic energy field surrounding coral cities, capable of influencing events and minds."
-- Technology description, War of Minds (Booklet 063)
"The city is calling to me."
-- Lyda Mar, upon entering the Maritime Coral City (Booklet 042)

The PSI-Aura (German: PSI-Aura, plural: PSI-Auren) is a vast bio-psionic energy field generated by the coral cities of the Norvo System and the planetary ecosystems engineered by the Buds of the Tree. Far more than a passive emanation, the PSI-Aura is a sentient, self-defending, consciousness-preserving intelligence of immense power -- the living nervous system of worlds shaped by pre-cosmic plant beings. It can disable spacecraft in orbit, annihilate artificially enhanced psionic warriors, preserve the mental echoes of the dead across centuries, and serve as an oracle's seat of power. The PSI-Aura is referenced across at least 74 wiki entries and features prominently in 8 booklets, making it one of the most pervasive and consequential concepts in Die Terranauten.

The PSI-Aura exists on multiple scales: as a localized field surrounding individual coral cities, as a planetary phenomenon enveloping Sarym and Arioch, and as a component of the system-spanning PSI-Net that connects all bio-psionic nodes in the Norvo System and, through the legacy of the Buds of the Tree, potentially the broader galaxy. It is the medium through which Mediators commune with living ecosystems, the crucible in which Aura Damona Mar was conceived, the instrument that destroyed the Super-Drivers, and the home from which the Oracles Lyda Mar and Aura Damona Mar watch over the fate of the Terranauts.

Nature and Properties

A Living Psionic Intelligence

The PSI-Aura is not merely an energy field -- it is a form of consciousness. Generated by the organic infrastructure of the coral cities built by the Buds of the Tree, the aura functions as a bio-psionic nervous system that permeates the coral structures, the surrounding ocean, and the atmosphere of the planets it envelops. It is capable of:

  • Perception: The PSI-Aura can distinguish between hostile and benign presences, responding to threats with escalating force while permitting access to those it recognizes as allies (Booklets 042, 061, 063).
  • Memory: The aura preserves the mental echoes of individuals who have merged with it -- the Ego-Echoes (German: Ego-Nachklange) that persist as layered strata of consciousness within the psionic field (Booklets 042, 061, 063).
  • Communication: Beings who merge with the PSI-Aura can communicate telepathically across vast distances. Lyda Mar, dwelling within the aura, serves as an Oracle who provides warnings and guidance to the Driver Council on Sarym (Booklets 070, 083, 090).
  • Defense: The PSI-Aura possesses formidable active defense capabilities, ranging from the release of Dream-hooks to the outright annihilation of psionic intruders and the disabling of spacecraft in orbit (Booklets 061, 063).
  • Transformation: Individuals who enter the PSI-Aura can be fundamentally changed by the experience -- elevated, empowered, or destroyed depending on their intent and nature (Booklets 042, 062, 063).

Structure: Psionic Field Lines and PSI-Spheres

The PSI-Aura has an internal structure composed of psionic field lines (German: psionische Feldlinien) along which PSI-Spheres float. These field lines organize the psionic energy into coherent patterns, creating zones of varying intensity and function within the aura. The aura also contains zones of destruction -- regions of concentrated defensive energy that can annihilate intruders (Booklet 063).

Within the PSI-Aura, deeper layers house a symbolic reality -- a psionic inner world where individuals experience the aura as a physical landscape. During the War of Minds, David terGorden, Llewellyn 709, and Lyda Mar found themselves in a desert city within the symbolic reality, where they were enslaved by the Silver Ones before being transported by Aura Damona Mar to the heart of the aura (Booklet 063).

Ego-Echoes: The Memory of the Aura

The PSI-Aura preserves the consciousness of individuals who have merged with it across the centuries, creating a repository of identity and memory called Ego-Echoes. Known echoes within the aura include:

EchoIdentityEncountered In
Mar-EstosFormer identity of Llewellyn 709; victim of Hermano Lotz's PSI-experimentsBooklets 042, 061
Damon CredockSurine Mediator; father of Aura Damona Mar; killed during the staged prison break from the Kaiser Secret StationBooklets 061, 063
The Silver OnesEntities encountered within the symbolic reality of the PSI-AuraBooklet 063

These echoes are not mere recordings. Llewellyn 709 encountered Mar-Estos -- the man he used to be -- as a conscious presence within the coral city, one of the saga's most emotionally charged moments: the Riemenmann confronting his former self (Booklet 061). Lyda Mar connected with Damon Credock's echo after his death, and through this connection also reached her unborn daughter Aura Damona Mar (Booklet 061).

Connection to the Maritime Coral City

The Maritime Coral City on Sarym is the primary generator and seat of the PSI-Aura. Built by the Buds of the Tree -- primordial plant intelligences who shaped the bio-psionic ecology of the Norvo System -- the coral city is simultaneously a living organism, a psionic intelligence, and a fortress. Its walls are covered with a fluorescent plant network called the Pflanzengeflecht, and its corridors teem with Dream-hooks, dragonfly-like parasites that serve as both biological defense and psionic interface.

The PSI-Aura of the Maritime Coral City functions as:

  • The central control element of Sarym's Bio-PSI system, steering the psionic equilibrium of the entire planet (Booklet 070)
  • A node in the PSI-Net, the system-spanning psionic network that connects Sarym, Arioch, and other bodies in the Norvo System (Booklets 062, 063)
  • A seat of oracle power, where Lyda Mar and Aura Damona Mar dwell as PSI-Operators (PSI-Operateure), maintaining and channeling the bio-psionic energy of the aura (Booklets 063, 070, 083)
  • A repository of consciousness preserving the Ego-Echoes of individuals who have merged with it across centuries

The Manipulator in the Hall of Eternity on Sarym/Equilibrium monitors the broader PSI-network and controls the Modificators, plant-like structures that release change-seeds to modify the ecosystem. This Manipulator awakens to counter threats to the PSI-network, as seen during the War of Minds (Booklet 063).

The PSI-Aura of Arioch

Arioch, the hellish twin planet of Sarym, possesses its own PSI-Aura, known to the native Hurricane Sailers as the **Source** (German: *Quell*). This aura emanates from the Coral City of Arioch, an underground coral structure with a breathable atmosphere that mirrors the Maritime Coral City on Sarym. The corridors of Arioch's coral city reminded Ennerk Prime of the Maritime Coral City (Booklet 062), confirming that both are products of the same builders -- the Buds of the Tree.

The Source on Arioch possesses transformative properties:

  • In Booklet 042, the PSI-parasite Oinji was caught in a crystal cyclone and saved by rolling into a niche near the Source, where he was transformed into a demigod-like being with vastly enhanced abilities.
  • The Source sustains the Hurricane Sailers, the native PSI-active species of Arioch who ride the planet's violent storms and draw psionic sustenance from the aura.
  • During the Cosmic Spores crisis of Booklet 083, the Source on Arioch went silent as Change Seeds emerged and the PSI-Net destabilized, devastating Oinji's tribe.

The existence of PSI-Auras on both Sarym and Arioch confirms that the Buds of the Tree's bio-psionic infrastructure spans the entire double-planet system, with the PSI-Net connecting all nodes into a unified network.

Effect on Drivers and Super-Drivers

The PSI-Aura and Natural Drivers

The sun Norvo emits radiation that suppresses conventional PSI Powers on Sarym's surface, rendering ordinary Drivers powerless upon arrival. However, the PSI-Aura operates through a different psionic channel -- the Bio-PSI system -- which is accessible to Mediators who can communicate with and influence the planet's living ecology. This creates a paradoxical environment where the Drivers' ordinary abilities are nullified but a deeper, more ancient form of psionic power thrives.

Lyda Mar became a true Mediator through her interaction with the PSI-Aura, connecting with the Water-lily Jellyfish and the consciousness dwelling within the Maritime Coral City (Booklet 042). Llewellyn 709, the most powerful Riemenmann alive, experienced the aura as a confrontation with his own past -- encountering the echo of Mar-Estos, the man he had once been (Booklets 042, 061). David terGorden entered the PSI-Aura on multiple occasions to seek guidance, meeting Aura Damona Mar and receiving counsel on his mission to find the Buds of the Tree and the Book Myriam (Booklet 072). The aura served as his conduit to the Oracle during moments of crisis, and it was from within the PSI-Aura that Lyda Mar warned him of the psychic dangers posed by the Silent Drivers' color compositions (Booklet 070).

The Destruction of the Super-Drivers

The PSI-Aura's most dramatic demonstration of power came during the War of Minds (Booklets 061-063), when Max von Valdec attempted to seize control of the Maritime Coral City's PSI-Aura using artificially enhanced Super-Drivers.

Phase 1 -- Neutralization (Booklet 061):

Valdec deployed Prometheus 107, Isis 31, and Phoenix 34 -- three of the most powerful Super-Drivers ever created by the Alpha-Order program -- along with the captive David terGorden, to force an entrance into the Maritime Coral City. The operation partially succeeded: they breached the city's defenses. But the **PSI-Aura neutralized the Super-Drivers**, overwhelming their artificially amplified psionic abilities with the ancient bio-psionic intelligence of the coral city. Valdec fled as his underwater base self-destructed.

Phase 2 -- Empowerment and Rebellion (Booklet 063):

In a second attempt, Valdec forced David terGorden's mind to open a connection to the PSI-Aura. The aura fought back, killing Expert Mira. But it also empowered Prometheus 107 with psionic energy far beyond anything the Alpha-Order program had intended -- simultaneously severing Valdec's control over the Super-Driver through the Killer-Block. Prometheus broke free and pursued his own ambition to dominate the PSI-Aura, capturing Llewellyn 709 and Lyda Mar as psionic "keys."

Phase 3 -- Annihilation (Booklet 063):

Dor Masali, the cyborg assistant to Hermano Lotz, piloted a Ringo loaded with fusion bombs toward the coral city, attempting to destroy both it and the rogue Super-Drivers. The **PSI-Aura killed Masali** before the bombs could detonate -- a remarkable demonstration, given that Masali's robotic body was immune to conventional PSI manipulation.

Within the symbolic reality inside the PSI-Aura, the Terranauts were enslaved by the Silver Ones, while Prometheus and his Super-Drivers hunted them. But Lyda Mar, aided by the still-unborn Aura Damona Mar, used her Mediator powers to transport the Terranauts and the Super-Drivers to the heart of the PSI-Aura. There, the ancient intelligence destroyed the Super-Drivers: Prometheus 107, Phoenix 34, and their companions were annihilated -- the most powerful artificially created psionic beings in the saga, obliterated by a force they could not comprehend or resist.

When Valdec ordered a Kaiser Force ship to bombard the coral city, Lyda and Aura Damona turned the ship's power against Valdec, causing a Kaiser Force shockwave that was absorbed by the petrified Modificators.

The War of Minds demonstrated a fundamental principle: the PSI-Aura represents an order of psionic power that transcends anything humanity -- or its artificially enhanced creations -- can produce. The Super-Driver article summarizes the lesson: "the most powerful weapons bred to serve Valdec first rebel against his control, then are annihilated by an ancient intelligence far beyond their comprehension."

Who Can Generate, Access, or Interface with the PSI-Aura

The PSI-Aura is not a power that any individual generates in isolation. It is produced by the ancient organic infrastructure of the coral cities and the bio-psionic ecosystems engineered by the Buds of the Tree. However, certain individuals can interface with, channel, and even partially control the aura:

Mediators

Mediators are individuals with the innate ability to communicate with living ecosystems through Bio-PSI. They are the primary human interface with the PSI-Aura. Lyda Mar became the first Terranaut Mediator, and Damon Credock and Aschan Herib -- Surinen Mediators native to Sarym -- could sense and interact with the aura before any Terranaut arrived.

Oracles (Lyda Mar and Aura Damona Mar)

After the War of Minds, Lyda Mar and Aura Damona Mar merged with the PSI-Aura and became its living guardians -- PSI-Operators (PSI-Operateure) who maintain, interpret, and channel the bio-psionic energy of the aura. From within the coral city:

  • Lyda Mar functions as an Oracle, communicating telepathically with the Driver Council, warning of threats, and intervening during crises (Booklets 070, 083, 090)
  • Aura Damona Mar can cultivate living spaceships (Storm-sailers), interface with Collectors, and influence events across enormous distances (Booklets 072, 083)
  • Together they can channel the aura's defensive power, turning even Kaiser Force energy back against its source (Booklet 063)

The Collector

The Collector, a quasi-intelligent organic spaceship built by the Buds of the Tree, can merge with the PSI-Aura. In Booklet 042, the Collector returned to the Norvo System and merged with the PSI-Aura of its home planet, learning the terrible truth about the Buds' "sacrilegious experiment" that had destroyed the PSI-Auras. The Collector was itself cultivated by the PSI-Auras on Sarym specifically for David terGorden (Booklet 094).

Oinji (Hurricane Sailer)

Oinji, a native Hurricane Sailer of Arioch, interacted with the PSI-Aura of Arioch (the Source) and was transformed into a demigod-like being by its power (Booklet 042). He later fought to protect the Source when it was threatened by Change Seeds and the destabilization of the PSI-Net (Booklet 083).

Multi-Mediators

The Silent Drivers -- former Drivers whose PSI abilities had been surgically removed -- achieved synthesis with plant spores from the Buds of the Tree on Sarym, becoming Multi-Mediators integrated into the bio-PSI system and, by extension, the PSI-Aura (Booklet 070). This transformation demonstrated that the aura could heal even the most grievously damaged psionic beings.

Biopsionische Speicheranemone

The Biopsionische Speicheranemone (Bio-Psionic Storage Anemone) is a creature that can absorb and neutralize PSI-Aura energy -- one of the few known means of directly countering the aura's influence. Similarly, the Sarym-Abschirmung (Sarym Shielding) is a technology developed to protect against the PSI-Aura's effects.

Key Events Involving the PSI-Aura

The Collector's Discovery (Unknown Date -- Booklet 042)

The Collector returned to the Norvo System after a long journey to the galactic core, sensing a weakened PSI-Net. It discovered that the PSI-Aura on the fifth planet, Equilibrium (Sarym), had been damaged. Merging with the PSI-Aura of its home planet, the Collector learned a devastating truth: the Buds of the Tree themselves caused the destruction of the PSI-Auras through a sacrilegious experiment. This revelation prompted the Collectors to be tasked with finding the Buds and warning them about Kaiser Force (Booklet 042).

First Terranaut Contact with the PSI-Aura (c. 2501 -- Booklet 042)

Lyda Mar, Damon Credock, and Ennerk Prime journeyed to the Maritime Coral City and entered the PSI-Aura for the first time. Lyda and Credock used Dream-hooks to synchronize their minds with the aura. During this merging, **Aura Damona Mar was conceived** -- not merely biologically, but within the very fabric of the PSI-Aura itself. They encountered the consciousness of Mar-Estos, the former self of Llewellyn 709, preserved as an Ego-Echo within the aura.

Oinji's Transformation (c. 2501 -- Booklet 042)

On Arioch, the PSI-parasite Oinji was caught in a crystal cyclone near the Source (the PSI-Aura of Arioch) and transformed into a demigod-like being by its energy. This event established the transformative power of the PSI-Aura even on the hellish twin planet of Sarym.

The PSI-Aura Disables Ships in Orbit (2503 -- Booklet 061)

When Gray Guard forces launched to intercept the arriving CYGNI, the Maritime Coral City's PSI-Aura created an energy field that disabled all spacecraft approaching Sarym, causing both the CYGNI and a Gray vessel to crash on Arioch. This demonstrated the aura's capacity to project defensive force on a system-wide scale.

Lyda and Llewellyn's Return (2503 -- Booklet 061)

Lyda Mar and Llewellyn 709 re-entered the Maritime Coral City. Inside the PSI-Aura, Llewellyn encountered the echo of Mar-Estos and Lyda connected with Damon Credock's lingering presence and her unborn daughter. They learned of the **Panic Program** -- an ancient defensive directive within the aura triggered by the approaching Grosse Ebbe (Great Ebb), which causes the mass release of Dream-hooks programmed to spread chaos across Sarym.

Valdec's Assault and the War of Minds (2503 -- Booklets 061, 063)

Max von Valdec attempted to control the PSI-Aura using Super-Drivers and the captive David terGorden. The aura neutralized the Super-Drivers, empowered and then destroyed Prometheus 107, killed Dor Masali and Expert Mira, and ultimately annihilated all three Super-Drivers (Prometheus 107, Phoenix 34, Isis 31) within its depths. Lyda Mar and Aura Damona Mar remained in the Maritime Coral City to control the PSI-Aura as its living guardians.

Discovery of the PSI-Aura on Arioch (2503 -- Booklet 062)

Survivors of the CYGNI crash, including Onnegart Vangralen, Ennerk Prime, and others, discovered the Coral City of Arioch -- an underground city with a breathable atmosphere and its own PSI-Aura. Near the aura, they encountered Suzanne Oh and Aschan Herib, who had been transported to Arioch years earlier.

The Oracle Period (2503 onward -- Booklets 070, 072, 083)

From within the PSI-Aura, Lyda Mar intervened to protect David terGorden from psychic collapse caused by the Silent Drivers' color compositions (Booklet 070). David entered the PSI-Aura to commune with Aura Damona Mar, who confirmed his path to Earth and cultivated a storm-sailor for his journey (Booklet 072). During the Cosmic Spores crisis, Lyda warned of the impending sealing-off of the Norvo System, and Aura Damona partially awakened a Collector from within the PSI-Aura to reverse the process (Booklet 083).

The Source Goes Silent (2504 -- Booklet 083)

On Arioch, the PSI-Aura known as the Source went silent as Change Seeds emerged and the PSI-Net destabilized during the Cosmic Spores crisis. Oinji's tribe was decimated, and his companion Kuschelmutz sacrificed himself. This demonstrated that even the ancient PSI-Aura could be disrupted by the activation of the Modification Submatrix.

The PSI-Aura in the Cosmic Hierarchy

The PSI-Aura exists within a layered infrastructure of pre-cosmic bio-psionic systems:

SystemScaleFunctionRelationship to PSI-Aura
PSI-AuraPlanetary / localPsionic field surrounding coral cities and ecosystemsThe fundamental unit
PSI-NetSystem-spanningNetwork connecting all PSI-Auras in the Norvo SystemLinks PSI-Auras into a unified system
Modification SubmatrixSystem-spanningAncient program governing the bio-psionic systemCan cause the Norvo System to isolate itself
ManipulatorPlanetaryPlant mesh in the Hall of Eternity controlling ModificatorsMonitors the PSI-network and activates defenses
Intercosmic Anti-Entropy SystemGalactic / cosmicThe Long Row, preventing entropy from destroying the universeThe PSI-Aura is a local component of this system

The PSI-Auras were created by the Buds of the Tree as part of their reshaping of the Norvo System's ecology. The coral cities that generate the auras are described as nodes in a network that once spanned the galaxy, connecting to World Trees, Steerers, and the Intercosmic Anti-Entropy System through the Space Roads and the Space-Time Stroboscope network.

The destruction of the PSI-Auras through the Buds' "sacrilegious experiment" (Booklet 042) -- and the later near-catastrophe caused by the Renegades' activation of a Far Jump Channel (Booklet 088) -- demonstrate that even these ancient systems are vulnerable to misuse by their own creators.

Themes

The Failure of Force

The PSI-Aura is the place where every attempt to control through violence fails. Queen Yazmin's explosives trigger defenses that kill her team. Valdec's Super-Drivers are neutralized and then annihilated by the very power they seek to seize. Dor Masali's fusion bombs never detonate. Kaiser Force itself is turned back against its wielder. The PSI-Aura embodies the saga's central argument that the ancient, organic, and living cannot be conquered by the technological, mechanical, and imposed.

Organic Consciousness

The PSI-Aura demonstrates that consciousness need not reside in a brain. It is distributed across coral structures, plant networks, psionic field lines, and the accumulated echoes of individuals who have merged with it over millennia. This distributed, organic intelligence is more powerful than any artificially concentrated psionic force -- a living refutation of the Alpha-Order's attempt to manufacture superior minds.

Transformation as Gateway

Every major character who enters the PSI-Aura is transformed. Lyda Mar becomes an Oracle. Damon Credock's consciousness survives death. Llewellyn 709 confronts his former self. Oinji becomes a demigod. Aura Damona Mar is conceived as a being interwoven with the psionic field itself. Even Prometheus 107 experiences a moment of genuine freedom before his destruction. The PSI-Aura is a crucible of metamorphosis -- a medium through which the saga's characters transcend their limitations and confront their deepest truths.

Bridge Between Eras

As a creation of the Buds of the Tree -- one of the saga's most ancient civilizations -- the PSI-Aura connects the present-day struggle of the Terranauts to the deep history of the cosmos. The aura preserves consciousness across centuries, allowing the living to encounter the dead and the past to inform the future. In this sense, the PSI-Aura is not merely a phenomenon but a temporal bridge, linking the saga's human characters to the primordial plant intelligences who shaped the galaxy's bio-psionic systems.
