Character First: 042 - The Gatherer

Hermano Lotz

Status: Unknown -- last seen aiding Valdec on Sarym during the War of Minds (Booklet 063); fate unresolved after Valdec's defeat

"Lotz infects the Terranauts with a virus designed to activate upon contact with Mar-Estos."
-- Timeline entry, Booklet 044

Hermano Lotz is the commander of a secret Kaiser Corporation research station on the prison planet Sarym, appearing in 6 booklets of Die Terranauten. A calculating and ruthless operative serving Max von Valdec and the Council of Corporations, Lotz oversees some of the saga's most insidious projects: the Alpha-Order super-Driver breeding program, the psycho-interrogation of captured Terranauts, and the development and deployment of the Hate Plague -- a biological weapon that comes closer to destroying the Terranaut resistance from within than any fleet or army ever managed. His scheming directly causes the death of Damon Credock and threatens the entire galaxy with an uncontrollable viral plague. Though never a frontline combatant, Lotz is one of the saga's most consequential antagonists: a bureaucratic villain whose cold methodology produces catastrophic results.

Biography

Commander of the Kaiser Secret Station (c. 2501)

Hermano Lotz first appears as the commander -- referred to variously as "Station Commander" and "director" -- of a covert Kaiser Corporation research installation on Sarym's South Continent. The station, known as the Kaiser Secret Station (German: Kaiser-Geheimstation), is concealed off the coast of the South Continent and operates as a combined research facility, prison, and breeding ground for genetically engineered super-Drivers under the classified Alpha-Order program. Lotz is assisted by Dor Masali, a cyborg whose brain resides in a robotic body, making him immune to PSI manipulation -- a valuable asset in a facility that houses some of the most powerful psionic beings ever created (Booklet 042).

When Lyda Mar, Damon Credock, and Ennerk Prime journey to the Maritime Coral City on Sarym's southern continent, Lotz monitors their progress through surveillance technology, including a robot spy disguised as a bird. His primary objective is to discover the location of Rorqual, the hidden Terranaut base. Through observation of the Terranauts' movements and communications, Lotz hopes they will inadvertently reveal Rorqual's coordinates (Booklet 042).

It is also during this period that Lotz's earlier activities are revealed: he conducted PSI-experiments at the Gray station on Sarym that tortured Mar-Estos, a former self of Llewellyn 709. The consciousness of Mar-Estos, encountered by Lyda Mar and Damon Credock within the Maritime Coral City, bears witness to these experiments -- connecting Lotz to a history of psionic abuse predating the Terranauts' arrival on Sarym (Booklet 042).

Capture and Interrogation of the Terranauts (c. 2501)

When the Terranauts are separated during a Dream-hook infestation on Sarym's South Continent, Lotz seizes the opportunity. Onnegart Vangralen is captured by lizard-like robots -- armored lizards that are actually machines disguised as native fauna -- and taken to the Kaiser Secret Station. Shortly after, Lyda Mar, Ennerk Prime, and Damon Credock are attacked by robotic floating islands and also captured (Booklet 043).

At the station, Lotz and Dor Masali discuss their captives and the possibility of an unknown power factor on Sarym. They devise a plan to interrogate the Terranauts using the psycho-hood, a device that creates virtual reality experiences to extract information -- specifically the location of Rorqual. Vangralen is subjected to virtual reality interrogation first, and the other Terranauts are also processed through the system (Booklet 043).

However, Lotz does not realize that his own facility harbors an internal threat. The station houses three genetically engineered super-Driver test subjects -- Prometheus 93, Isis 24, and Phonix 17 -- created under the Alpha-Order program. These super-Drivers, far more powerful than Lotz suspects, secretly monitor his actions and plot to prevent him from alerting Valdec to their existence and growing autonomy. They sabotage the interrogation by overloading the psycho-hood, freeing the Terranauts from their mental blocks. Most critically, Prometheus 93 manipulates Lotz's mind, planting the idea to use a virus against the Terranauts -- a plan that Lotz subsequently believes to be his own invention (Booklet 043).

This detail is one of the saga's darkest ironies: the scheme that makes Lotz most dangerous -- the Hate Plague -- may not have originated in his own mind at all, but was implanted by a super-Driver manipulating its own handler.

The Hate Plague: Biological Warfare (c. 2501)

Armed with his virus plan -- whether self-conceived or psychically implanted -- Lotz develops and executes one of the saga's most devastating stratagems. He infects the imprisoned Terranauts (Lyda Mar, Ennerk Prime, and Onnegart Vangralen) with a specially engineered virus: the Hate Plague (Hassplage). The virus is designed with a diabolical trigger mechanism: it remains dormant until the carrier comes into contact with the PSI signature of Mar-Estos / Llewellyn 709, at which point it activates and induces uncontrollable hatred and violence in all who are exposed (Booklet 044).

To ensure the virus reaches its target, Lotz orchestrates a staged prison break. Working with Dor Masali, he arranges for the Terranauts to fight their way out of the station, making the escape appear genuine. The breakout is brutal and costly: fellow prisoners and guards are killed in the fighting, and -- most devastatingly -- Damon Credock dies during the escape. Credock's death is not merely collateral damage; the entire escape is a calculated performance designed to make the Terranauts believe they have won their freedom through courage and sacrifice, ensuring they will carry the virus directly back to Rorqual without suspicion (Booklet 044).

The surviving Terranauts commandeer a Ringo shuttle and flee Sarym. They are pursued by a Ringo from OUTPOST, the Gray Guard station in the Norvo System, but evade destruction by hiding in an asteroid field. Using Lyda Mar's connection to the sentient Seeker, they contact a courier ship and escape into Space II, heading for Rorqual -- exactly as Lotz intended.

Lotz reports the success of his operation to Max von Valdec, confirming that the plan is in motion. Valdec approves, anticipating the Terranauts' unconditional surrender once the virus activates and they desperately need the antidote that only Valdec possesses (Booklet 044).

The Hate Plague Unleashed (c. 2501-2502)

Lotz's scheme works with terrible precision. When Ennerk Prime, Onnegart Vangralen, and Lyda Mar return to Rorqual aboard the courier ship BERLIN, they navigate through a Black Hole gateway into Space II. Upon arrival, the Hate Plague virus activates -- its dormancy broken by contact with Llewellyn 709's PSI presence. The virus spreads through the Terranaut base, causing uncontrollable rage and violence among the infected. On the icy planet Quostan, the virus also affects the native Ice Devils, demonstrating its capacity to jump species and threatening a galaxy-wide epidemic (Booklet 046).

The revelation that the Terranauts' "escape" was orchestrated by Lotz -- that their freedom was a weapon aimed at their own people -- stands as one of the saga's most devastating betrayals. Lyda Mar and Llewellyn 709 prove immune to the virus, likely due to Lyda's transformation into a Mediator and her integration with the PSI-aura, but the damage to the Terranaut movement is profound. The Terranauts are forced to seek the antidote from Valdec himself, giving the tyrant enormous leverage over the resistance (Booklets 046-049).

Serving Valdec on Sarym (2502-2503)

After Valdec's expulsion from Earth and flight to Sarym, Lotz continues to serve him as station director of the research base. His facility -- now referred to as the Underwater Research Base off the coast of the South Continent -- becomes the operational center for Valdec's campaign to seize control of the PSI-aura emanating from the Maritime Coral City.

In the events of Booklet 061, the research station on Sarym is identified as "Hermano Lotz's research station off the coast of the South Continent, where experiments on Drivers are conducted." Valdec uses the station as his base of operations, deploying new generations of super-Drivers -- Prometheus 107, Isis 31, and Phoenix 34 -- bred under the Alpha-Order program that Lotz oversees. Queen Yazmin, Valdec's military commander, leads expeditions from the station into the Maritime Coral City, attempting to breach its defenses (Booklet 061).

The War of Minds (c. 2503)

During the climactic War of Minds on Sarym, Lotz aids Valdec in the attempt to control the PSI-aura using super-Drivers. He is listed among those assisting Valdec alongside Queen Yazmin as the super-Drivers are deployed to force open a connection to the PSI-aura through David terGorden's captive mind (Booklet 063).

When Prometheus 107 breaks free from Valdec's control after being empowered by the PSI-aura, Lotz's cyborg assistant Dor Masali takes independent action: Masali attempts to destroy the Maritime Coral City with fusion bombs, reasoning that the super-Drivers' minds reside within it. The attack fails, and Dor Masali is killed by the PSI-aura's defenses -- depriving Lotz of his most trusted and PSI-immune operative (Booklet 063).

The War of Minds ends in Valdec's defeat. The super-Drivers are destroyed within the PSI-aura by Lyda Mar and her unborn daughter Aura Damona Mar, and Valdec flees once more. Lotz's fate after these events is not explicitly recorded in the available sources. With his station destroyed or abandoned, his super-Driver assets annihilated, and his patron in flight, Lotz disappears from the narrative.

Character Analysis

Hermano Lotz occupies a distinctive niche in the saga's rogues' gallery. He is not a warlord like Max von Valdec, nor a psionic titan like the super-Drivers he breeds. He is an administrator -- a facility director who wields power through institutional authority, surveillance, and biological weapons rather than personal combat or charisma. His most dangerous quality is his methodical patience: he watches the Terranauts through hidden cameras, waits for them to reveal information, and constructs elaborate schemes that exploit his prisoners' desire for freedom.

The central irony of Lotz's character is that his most consequential act -- the Hate Plague -- may not have been his idea at all. Prometheus 93, one of the super-Drivers imprisoned at his own station, manipulates Lotz's mind and plants the virus scheme. Lotz, the man who orders psycho-interrogations and monitors others through robot spies, is himself the victim of mental manipulation by the very weapons he helped create. This detail underscores one of the saga's recurring themes: that tools of control inevitably turn against their wielders.

Notes

The Staged Prison Break: Lotz's staged escape in Booklet 044 is one of the saga's most coldly effective villain schemes. By allowing the Terranauts to fight their way out -- suffering real casualties, including the death of Damon Credock -- Lotz ensures they never suspect they are carrying a biological weapon. The genius of the plan lies in its exploitation of the Terranauts' heroism: their courage and desperation to escape are the very mechanisms that deliver the Hate Plague to Rorqual.

Puppet of Prometheus 93: The revelation that Prometheus 93 manipulated Lotz's mind to plant the virus plan (Booklet 043) raises an unresolved question: would Lotz have devised the Hate Plague on his own? The saga does not answer this definitively, but the implication is clear -- the Alpha-Order program has produced beings whose psionic abilities far exceed what their creators can control or even detect.

The Mar-Estos Experiments: Lotz's PSI-experiments on Mar-Estos, a former incarnation of Llewellyn 709, predate the main events of the saga and are referenced through the consciousness encountered in the Maritime Coral City (Booklet 042). These experiments connect Lotz to the broader history of psionic abuse on Sarym and suggest that his tenure on the planet extends well before the Terranauts' arrival.

Naming Conventions: Lotz is referred to in the text both by his full name "Hermano Lotz" and simply as "Lotz." The character page titled "Lotz" in the vault refers to the same individual. Similarly, his station is referred to as the "Kaiser Secret Station," "Valdec's Secret Station," and the "Underwater Research Base" at different points in the saga, reflecting its evolving role as Valdec takes direct command.

Fate Unknown: After the War of Minds (Booklet 063), Lotz's fate is not recorded. With Dor Masali dead, the super-Drivers destroyed, and Valdec in flight, Lotz's power base on Sarym has been comprehensively dismantled. He does not appear in any subsequent booklets.
