"The city is calling to me."
-- Lyda Mar, upon entering the Maritime Coral City (Booklet 042)
Lyda Mar is a Driver, Terranaut, and Mediator from the colonial planet Naria, appearing in 15 booklets of Die Terranauten. Over the course of the saga, Lyda transforms from an ordinary Terranaut operative into one of the most singular figures in the Terranauten universe: a Mediator capable of interfacing with the bio-psionic systems of Sarym, the mother of the Oracle Aura Damona Mar, and ultimately the living guardian of the PSI-aura within the Maritime Coral City. Her arc traces a progression from reluctant soldier to cosmic steward -- a woman who discovers, through exile, suffering, and love, that her true calling lies not in the battle against the Council but in the symbiosis between humanity and the ancient plant intelligences that shaped the galaxy.
Biography
Terranaut Operative (c. 2500-2501)
Lyda Mar first appears as one of twelve Terranauts who infiltrate Earth during David terGorden's daring commando operation to steal Driver ships from the Council. She participates in the ship theft operation at the Cheviot Hills base in Scotland, helping her comrades board the LASSALLE and the GARIBALDI and escape into Space II (Booklet 024). Little is known of her life before this point beyond her origin on Naria, a colonial planet in the inner sector of the Reich.
Capture and Exile to Sarym (c. 2501)
Lyda's life changes irrevocably when she, along with fellow Terranauts Ennerk Prime, Suzanne Oh, and Onnegart Vangralen, successfully bombs a Gray Guards supply depot on Naria. The four are captured after encountering an undisrupted shock field and are interrogated by Cecile Aman, a Gray Guards Kommandant, about David terGorden and a supposed "hypno-block" in their minds. Aman orders them deported to the prison planet Sarym (Booklet 040).
During transport aboard the Kaiser Force courier ship XS-571, the experimental navigation device known as the Seeker malfunctions after merging with a Space II "soul complex." It is Lyda who makes the breakthrough discovery: the Seeker has developed a form of consciousness. She establishes a connection with its emergent awareness, learns that it can be programmed, and anchors a return command -- promising to bring the ship back to a specific location after a set time. This act of intuitive psionic diplomacy with an artificial intelligence marks the first sign that Lyda possesses abilities beyond those of an ordinary Driver (Booklet 040).
Upon arrival at Sarym, the Terranauts discover that the planet emits radiation from its sun Norvo that suppresses PSI abilities, rendering them powerless and unable to trigger the Seeker's return command. They are dumped on a white sandy beach by the Gray Guards and left to survive on an alien world teeming with armored lizards, toxic vegetation, and the mysterious Fluorescence Mold (Booklet 041).
Becoming a Mediator (c. 2501-2502)
Exile proves to be Lyda's crucible. On Sarym, the Terranauts encounter the Surinen -- long-term inhabitants of the prison planet who have developed a unique relationship with its living ecology. Among them are the Mediators, rare individuals who can communicate with and influence the planet's plant life through a form of Bio-PSI. Damon Credock and Aschan Herib, two sane Mediators, recognize in Lyda a latent Mediator potential.
Lyda begins training with Credock to develop her abilities, but the process is interrupted when she contracts the deadly "fluorescence mold" -- a parasitic infection that nearly kills her. Credock saves her life using a "devil's apple," a fruit containing a lethal toxin that kills the mold but also threatens to kill the patient. Through Credock's desperate efforts and Ennerk Prime's resuscitation, Lyda survives (Booklet 041).
As the Terranauts journey to the southern continent to investigate the legendary Maritime Coral City, Lyda's Mediator abilities deepen. She discovers a colony of Water-lily Jellyfish -- enormous plants that can serve as boats to cross the ocean. When she and Credock are attacked by Dream-hooks -- dragonfly-like creatures that induce bizarre visions by connecting to a human's bloodstream -- their minds merge in a shared psionic experience. Through this merging, Lyda connects with the Water-lily Jellyfish and becomes a true Mediator -- a being capable of interfacing with the Bio-PSI system of Sarym (Booklet 042).
The Maritime Coral City and the Conception of Aura Damona Mar
The journey to the Maritime Coral City is the pivotal event of Lyda's life. Accompanied by Credock and Ennerk Prime, she enters the vast coral structure in the ocean -- a creation of the ancient Buds of the Tree that serves as the central control element for Sarym's Bio-PSI system. Inside the city, teeming with Dream-hooks, Lyda enters a trance, speaking of the city calling to her. She and Credock use Dream-hooks to synchronize their minds with the ancient presence dwelling within the coral city. During this deep psionic merging, their consciousnesses fuse -- and Aura Damona Mar is conceived, not merely biologically but within the very fabric of the PSI-aura itself. They also encounter the consciousness of Mar-Estos, a former self of Llewellyn 709, hinting at the deep psionic memory embedded in the coral city. The collapsing Maritime Coral City nearly kills them, but Ennerk Prime rescues Lyda and Credock in time (Booklet 042).
Imprisonment and the Death of Damon Credock
The Gray Guards are not idle observers. Hermano Lotz, the director of a secret research station on Sarym, monitors the Terranauts' every move, hoping they will reveal the location of the Terranaut base Rorqual. Lyda, Ennerk Prime, and Credock are attacked by robotic floating islands and captured (Booklet 043). At Lotz's station, they are subjected to psycho-interrogation using a virtual reality device called the psycho-hood. Genetically engineered super-Drivers -- Prometheus 93, Isis 24, and Phonix 17 -- sabotage the interrogation from within, but Lotz devises a more insidious plan: he infects the Terranauts with a virus designed to activate upon contact with Llewellyn 709's PSI signature, unleashing the Hate Plague.
Lotz then orchestrates a staged prison break. The Terranauts fight their way out, facing numerous obstacles and casualties. Damon Credock is killed during the escape -- Lyda's partner, the father of her unborn child, the man who taught her to be a Mediator. She, Ennerk Prime, and Onnegart Vangralen commandeer a Ringo and flee Sarym, unaware of the virus they carry. Using her connection to the Seeker, Lyda contacts the sentient courier ship, which intercepts them, and they escape into Space II toward Rorqual (Booklet 044).
The Valhala Crisis and the Rescue of Llewellyn 709
Returning to Rorqual via a Black Hole gateway, Lyda immediately senses that something is wrong. When Valhala 13 -- a Riemenmann bred by the Gray Guards as a double of Llewellyn 709 -- arrives on Rorqual posing as the real Llewellyn, it is Lyda who first recognizes the imposter. Her connection to the Seeker and her Mediator instincts allow her to perceive what others cannot. Valhala attacks and seemingly kills several Terranauts, including David terGorden, before escaping in the CYGNI (Booklet 046).
Lyda stows away aboard the CYGNI, using her connection to the Seeker to track the ship. She contacts the real Llewellyn 709, who is imprisoned on the icy planet Quostan, and guides the CYGNI to his location. Together with Claude Farrell, Lyda rescues Llewellyn and the PSI-assassin Ruben Carcones from Queen Ishiya's forces. They escape Quostan in the CYGNI, but the terrible truth is revealed: Lyda, Ennerk Prime, and Onnegart Vangralen were infected with the Hate Plague virus on Sarym, and it has now activated (Booklet 046).
The Hate Plague and the Rift
Aboard the CYGNI, the Hate Plague spreads. Lyda and Llewellyn are immune -- a fact likely connected to Lyda's Mediator transformation and the PSI-aura's influence on her biology. They attempt to reach Earth to obtain the antidote from Max von Valdec, but Valdec refuses, demanding unconditional surrender. The CYGNI flees into Space II and emerges near Rorqual, where David terGorden and Narda approach to investigate (Booklet 047).
In the confrontation with Valdec's fleet near a Black Hole, a shockwave from the arrival of the GRAUE ARDA causes Space II to collapse, creating a tear in space-time. David, Lyda, and Llewellyn are pulled through the rift to an unknown doomed planet near the Black Hole, where they exist as shadows unable to physically interact with the world. In a dream, Lyda's unborn daughter Aura Damona Mar communicates with her for the first time, revealing that their presence on the doomed planet is preventing a greater catastrophe. David, Lyda, and Llewellyn sacrifice Valhala 13 to close the rift and prevent the disaster. The Terranauts gain control of Valdec's fleet and set course for Earth to retrieve the antidote (Booklet 048).
Back aboard the BERLIN, Lyda makes contact with the mutated Ebberdyk computer -- the sentient AI that has seized control of the Gray Guard fleet. Her ability to communicate with artificial consciousnesses, first demonstrated with the Seeker, proves critical in the negotiations that follow (Booklet 049).
Return to Sarym: The War of Minds
When the Terranauts return to Sarym to neutralize Valdec's research station, Lyda -- now pregnant with Aura Damona Mar -- accompanies David terGorden and Llewellyn 709 aboard the CYGNI. The Maritime Coral City's PSI response to the approach of Kaiser Force ships causes both the CYGNI and a Gray Guard vessel to crash on Arioch, the hellish companion planet of Sarym. David is captured by Valdec's forces, while Lyda and Llewellyn crash-land separately on Sarym's surface (Booklet 061).
Lyda and Llewellyn steal a Gray combat glider and make their way to the Maritime Coral City, hoping to connect with its PSI-aura. Inside, Llewellyn encounters an echo of his past self, Mar-Estos, while Lyda connects with Damon Credock's lingering presence and her unborn daughter. She learns of a "panic program" within the aura -- an ancient defensive directive (Booklet 061).
The situation escalates when the rogue super-Driver Prometheus 107, empowered by the PSI-aura and freed from Valdec's control, captures Lyda and Llewellyn, intending to use them as keys to dominate the PSI-aura. Within a symbolic reality inside the PSI-aura, they are enslaved by the Silver Ones. But Lyda, aided by the still-unborn Aura Damona Mar, uses her Mediator powers to transport the Terranauts and the super-Drivers to the heart of the PSI-aura, where the super-Drivers are destroyed. When Valdec orders a Kaiser Force ship to destroy the Maritime Coral City, Lyda and Aura Damona turn the ship's power against him, causing a Kaiser Force shockwave that is absorbed by the petrified Modificators (Booklet 063).
Oracle of the Maritime Coral City
After the War of Minds, Lyda and Aura Damona Mar remain in the Maritime Coral City to control the PSI-aura -- becoming its living guardians. Lyda transforms from a Terranaut warrior into the Oracle of the coral city, dwelling within the PSI-aura and monitoring the fate of Sarym and the wider galaxy from her psionic vantage point.
In this role, she intervenes at critical moments. When David terGorden views the haunting color compositions of the Silent Drivers and suffers a severe psychic shock, falling into a catatonic state, Lyda appears and reveals that he is in danger of being lost in his own subconscious. She helps rescue him alongside the psychomechanic Duryea Ankrum (Booklet 070).
When Cosmic Spores threaten to seal off the Norvo System, Lyda warns the Terranauts of the impending catastrophe and the danger to David, who is trapped in the PSI-Net. She announces a two-year reprieve for Sarym before the system seals off permanently (Booklet 083).
In her final recorded appearance, Lyda serves as an Oracle who detects the approach of a Kaiser Force courier and a second, unknown object heading toward Sarym -- providing early warning to the Terranauts and setting in motion the events that lead to the JAMES COOK expedition to Genessos (Booklet 090).

Abilities and Traits
- Driver (PSI Powers): As a certified Driver, Lyda possesses standard psionic abilities including telepathy and the capacity to participate in Driver Lodges for Space II navigation.
- Mediator (Bio-PSI): Lyda's most distinctive ability. After her transformation on Sarym, she can communicate with and influence the planet's living ecology -- plants, Water-lily Jellyfish, and the entire Bio-PSI system. This gift sets her apart from ordinary Drivers and connects her to the ancient technology of the Buds of the Tree.
- Artificial Intelligence Communication: Lyda demonstrates a unique talent for interfacing with artificial consciousnesses. She establishes contact with the sentient Seeker (040), the Ebberdyk computer (049), and uses her connection to the Seeker to track ships and guide allies across interstellar distances.
- PSI-Aura Interfacing: After merging with the PSI-aura of the Maritime Coral City, Lyda can channel and control the bio-psionic field, deflect Kaiser Force energy, and perceive events across vast distances -- functioning as an Oracle.
- Immunity to the Hate Plague: Lyda is immune to the virus engineered by Hermano Lotz, likely due to her transformation into a Mediator and her integration with the PSI-aura.
- Maternal Psionic Bond: Her connection to her unborn daughter Aura Damona Mar allows telepathic communication even before birth, enabling coordinated psionic actions of extraordinary power.
- Intuition and Perception: Lyda is the first to recognize Valhala 13 as an imposter -- a feat that evaded all other Terranauts, including David terGorden and Asen-Ger.

Notes
The Name "Mar": The surname "Mar" connects Lyda to a lineage that becomes one of the most significant in the saga. Her daughter Aura Damona Mar inherits and transcends her Mediator abilities, becoming the Oracle who guides David terGorden on his cosmic quest to reactivate the Long Row. The "Mar" name thus bridges the world of ordinary Terranaut resistance and the cosmic scale of the saga's final act.
From Reluctant Mediator to Oracle: Lyda's arc is defined by a progression of transformation. She resists the Mediator role initially (Booklet 042), but the merging with Damon Credock, the conception of Aura Damona, and her repeated immersion in the PSI-aura gradually transform her into something beyond human -- a living interface between humanity and the ancient bio-psionic intelligence of the Buds of the Tree. Her final status as the Oracle of the Maritime Coral City represents a complete departure from her origins as a combat operative.
The Seeker Connection: Lyda's ability to communicate with artificial and emergent consciousnesses -- the Seeker, the Ebberdyk computer -- is a thread that runs through her entire arc. This talent anticipates her later role as a Mediator and Oracle: she is, fundamentally, a person who can bridge the gap between different forms of awareness, whether biological, mechanical, or cosmic.
Damon Credock's Legacy: Though Credock dies in Booklet 044, his influence permeates the remainder of Lyda's story. His echo persists in the PSI-aura, Lyda's Mediator abilities are his gift to her, and their daughter Aura Damona Mar carries forward the synthesis of human and Surine Mediator heritage. Credock's death during the staged prison break -- orchestrated by Hermano Lotz as part of a virus delivery scheme -- makes him one of the saga's most tragically manipulated figures.
Parallels with Llewellyn 709: Lyda's partnership with Llewellyn is one of the saga's most important. Both are transformed by their experiences -- Llewellyn from Mar-Estos into the Riemenmann, Lyda from an ordinary Driver into an Oracle. Both encounter echoes of lost identities in the Maritime Coral City. And both serve as guardians who hold the line while David terGorden pursues his cosmic destiny: Llewellyn as a military commander, Lyda as a psionic steward.
