The Long Row

Die Lange Reihe

"A system designed to prevent entropy from destroying the universe."
-- Description of the Intercosmic Anti-Entropy System (Booklet 094)

The Long Row (German: Die Lange Reihe), formally known as the Intercosmic Anti-Entropy System (German: Interkosmisches Anti-Entropie-System, abbreviated IAES), is the single most consequential cosmic mechanism in Die Terranauten. Created by the Ancients -- the intelligent plant beings of the Pre-Cosmos -- the Long Row is a galaxy-spanning network of World Trees, Steerers, and related cosmic structures designed to counteract entropy and preserve the structural integrity of the universe. Its deterioration, caused in part by humanity's reckless use of Kaiser Force technology, drives the saga's final arc and provides the cosmological stakes that transform David terGorden's personal journey into a mission of universal significance.

The Long Row can only be reactivated by the nine Spectra -- cosmic beings who must unite to form the White Star, which in turn powers the system. David terGorden is one of these nine Spectra, making him the linchpin on which the fate of the cosmos turns.

Origin: The Pre-Cosmos and the Ancients

The Long Row's origins lie in the Pre-Cosmos -- the universe that existed before the Big Bang. This earlier cosmos was dominated by the Ancients (German: Die Uralten), a civilization of intelligent plant beings whose existence predates all current life. When the Pre-Cosmos was destroyed, the Ancients did not perish entirely. They survived the transition into the new universe and seeded it with the infrastructure necessary to maintain cosmic order against the inevitable force of entropy.

This infrastructure is the Long Row: a system of interconnected components designed to counterbalance entropic decay on a universal scale. The Ancients embedded their knowledge and technology into living structures -- World Trees, Steerers, and the Old Forest -- rather than relying on mechanical devices. The Long Row is, in essence, a living machine, organic in nature and psionic in function.

The Connex Crystal, a precosmic artifact containing the accumulated knowledge of the Ancients, preserves the operational principles of the Long Row and is essential for its reactivation (Booklets 094-096).

Structure and Components

The Long Row is not a single device but a distributed system composed of multiple interconnected elements:

World Trees

The World Trees (German: Weltenbaume) are the primary nodes of the Long Row. These sentient cosmic plants -- descendants or offspring of the Ancients -- are scattered across the galaxy, each serving as a stabilizing anchor against entropic disturbances. They counteract entropy through their PSI emissions and their deep connection to Space II.

Known World Trees within the Long Row include:

World TreeLocationNotes
YggdrasilOdrodir, EarthThe Primeval Tree; the most significant World Tree for humanity. Dormant through much of the saga but instrumental in David's destiny.
Tau UlemaRorqualThe World Tree of the hollow planet Rorqual, located in Space II. Controls a "space trap" of wrecked ships and reveals the Anti-Entropy System to David (Booklet 058).
Psi UlemaGlimmerA primeval tree on the planet Glimmer (Booklet 078).
Einzige UrbaumUnknownThe "Only Primeval Tree" -- the original World Tree from which all others descend. David channels its power to repel the Entity Varen Navten (Booklet 096).

The World Trees act as stabilizing nodes, counteracting entropy through their PSI emissions. When Kaiser Force technology tears open Space II by force, it accelerates entropy and damages the World Tree network, weakening the Long Row from within.

The Steerers

The Steerers (German: Lenker) are beings responsible for coordinating the Long Row. They are descendants or agents of the Ancients, tasked with maintaining the system's operational integrity across cosmic time. Steerers can disguise themselves as other species; Luther Straightwire, the Lenker of the Old Forest, appears as a human but is in fact a plant-being (Booklet 094).

Notable Steerers connected to the Long Row include:

SteererRoleNotes
Luther StraightwireLenker of the Old ForestReveals the Long Row's history and David's destiny. Departs to protect the Connex Crystal from an Entity (Booklet 094).
Scanner CloudSteerer / Near-SteererSacrifices himself at the Pyramid of Knowledge to stop the Arbitrators. Demonstrates that not all humans are destroyers (Booklet 095).
MorgensternSteerer / Near-SteererSacrifices himself alongside Scanner Cloud. Later orchestrates the ecological transformation of Earth via Cosmic Spores (Booklets 095, 099).

The Old Forest -- a solar-system-sized collection of intelligent plants surrounding a dwarf sun -- is composed entirely of inactive Steerers who have merged into a collective consciousness. The Old Forest controls the Reality Switch and seeks to eliminate entropy disturbances (Booklet 094).

The Helpers

The Helpers are beings who assisted the Steerers in maintaining the Long Row. They represent a supporting tier of the system's operational hierarchy, distinct from the Steerers themselves but essential to the system's function (Booklet 058).

The Buds of the Tree

The Buds of the Tree (German: Knospen des Baumes) are cosmic plant-beings related to the World Trees and the Steerers. Described as both allies and "renegades," they are tasked with maintaining balance in the galaxy and preventing entropy catastrophes. The Buds assigned the Collector, David's quasi-intelligent plant spaceship, its mission. On Sarym, Silent Drivers achieved integration with the Buds of the Tree, becoming "multi-mediators" -- a step toward the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the cosmic plant ecology that the Long Row represents (Booklets 070, 083-084, 088).

Function: Fighting Entropy

The Long Row's cosmic function is the prevention of entropic collapse -- the tendency of all ordered systems to degrade into chaos and heat death. In the cosmology of Die Terranauten, entropy is not merely an abstract thermodynamic concept but an active, accelerating force that can be worsened by certain technologies and even fed upon by parasitic entities.

The system works through the coordinated PSI emissions of the World Trees, moderated by the Steerers and powered by the collective consciousness of the Ancients' legacy. When functioning properly, the Long Row maintains a baseline equilibrium across the universe, preventing entropy from exceeding natural rates.

The Kaiser Force Threat

Kaiser Force technology -- developed by Max von Valdec and Kaiser Corporation as an alternative to Driver-mistletoe space travel -- poses the gravest threat to the Long Row. Kaiser Force achieves faster-than-light travel by tearing open Space II through brute force rather than navigating it organically. This process has catastrophic side effects:
  • It accelerates entropy at the point of transit
  • It damages the fabric of Space II itself
  • It destabilizes World Trees and their PSI networks
  • It creates Gray Holes and Entropy Accumulations

The destruction of the planet Xaxon (Booklet 050), the devastation of the Wet World of the Schianta (Booklet 090), and the threat to the Three-Sun System of the Carmas (Booklets 064-065) are all direct consequences of Kaiser Force's entropy-accelerating effects. The Entities -- the galaxy's most powerful supercivilizations -- view Kaiser Force as an existential threat to the cosmos and threaten humanity with a Final Strike in response.

The Nine Spectra

The Long Row cannot simply be switched on. Its reactivation requires the union of nine beings called the Spectra (German: Spektren), also referred to as the Spectral Brothers (German: Spektralbruder). Each Spectrum is a Spectral Component Being -- an individual who embodies a specific aspect of the cosmic whole. When the nine Spectra unite, they create the White Star (German: Weisser Stern), which consists of nine Triadic Monochords and serves as the activation key for the Long Row.

David terGorden as Spectrum

David terGorden is one of the nine Spectra. His role was encoded before his birth: Yggdrasil's influence on his mother Myriam and the implantation of Sleeping Information by the Steerers mark him as a Spectral Component Being -- a living key to the Long Row's reactivation. His titles reflect this destiny:
  • Heir of Power (German: Erbe der Macht) -- The prophesied figure destined to reactivate the Long Row
  • Bearer of the Monochord (German: Trager des Monochords) -- Carrier of the Triadic Monochord, the sacred symbol linking him to Yggdrasil and the World Tree network
  • Spectral Brother (German: Spektralbruder) -- His designation among the nine Spectra

David learns of his role as a Spectrum in Booklet 094, when Luther Straightwire reveals at the Old Forest that he must find the eight other Spectra and unite with them. The search for the remaining Spectra becomes the driving quest of the saga's final arc.

Known Individual Spectra

The nine Spectra appear to be named or associated with spectral colors, reflecting their nature as components of the White Star's unified light. Named Spectra from the source material include:

SpectrumNatureNotes
David terGordenHeir of Power / Bearer of the MonochordThe central Spectrum; carries Sleeping Information implanted by the Steerers
IndigoSpectral color-beingOne of four Spectra absorbed by David during the saga's climax
Blau (Blue)Embodies inspirationA Spectrum associated with the quality of inspiration
Violett (Violet)Represents the spiritual-psychic (geistig-seelisch)A Spectrum associated with spiritual and psychic qualities

Additionally, the concept of the Fifth Spectrum is referenced as "one of the eight aspects of the White Star," and the False Spectrum is identified as "David terGorden's most dangerous enemy, who wanted to accelerate the destruction of the cosmos" -- a force that actively opposes the Long Row.

The Cosmic Spectra and the Reality Switch

In the saga's climax, the eight other Cosmic Spectra are described as being held within the Reality Switch (German: Realschalter) -- the precosmic entity from the universe of the Ancients that orchestrates the final confrontation between David and Valdec. The Cosmic Spectra unify within the Reality Switch to form the White Star, the activation mechanism for the Long Row. David absorbs at least four of the Spectra (including Indigo) during this process, and the unification emits a Spectral Impulse -- the signal confirming the reactivation (Booklets 097-098).

Ratatosk: The Saboteur

Ratatosk is the Long Row's primary cosmic antagonist. In Norse mythology, Ratatosk is the squirrel that runs up and down the World Tree Yggdrasil carrying messages between the eagle at the top and the serpent at the roots. In Die Terranauten, Ratatosk is reimagined as an energy being that feeds on entropy -- a parasitic entity whose existence depends on the very force the Long Row is designed to suppress.

Ratatosk actively sabotages the reconstruction of the Long Row. Luther Straightwire warns David about Ratatosk in Booklet 094, identifying it as a direct threat to the mission of reuniting the Spectra. While Kaiser Force technology accelerates entropy through ignorance and technological hubris, Ratatosk accelerates it through deliberate, malevolent intent. Ratatosk represents the cosmological antagonist -- the force of decay that the World Trees and their allies exist to oppose.

The relationship between Ratatosk and the Long Row mirrors the Norse mythological tension between the World Tree and the forces gnawing at its roots: a cosmic symbiosis turned parasitic, where the very structure meant to sustain order also sustains the entity that seeks to destroy it.

The Long Row and Yggdrasil

Yggdrasil is not merely a component of the Long Row -- she is its most narratively significant node. The Primeval Tree is a surviving element of the Pre-Cosmos, rooted in Odrodir in Greenland, and she serves simultaneously as a functional node in the anti-entropy network and as the being who produced David, the key to the system's reactivation.

Yggdrasil's deepest significance is revealed in the saga's later arcs: she is a functional component of the Long Row, counteracting entropy through her PSI emissions and her connection to Space II. The Mistletoe Blossoms she produces enable Drivers to navigate Space II organically -- the natural, non-destructive alternative to Kaiser Force technology. When Valdec's regime sought to destroy Yggdrasil's consciousness while keeping the mistletoes commercially viable, they were unwittingly attacking the Long Row itself.

The Einzige Urbaum -- the Only Primeval Tree, the World Tree from which all others descend -- represents the deepest root of the Long Row's architecture. David channels its power on the Central World of the Entities to repel Varen Navten's attack, demonstrating that the Long Row's infrastructure, though damaged, retains immense latent power (Booklet 096).

The Entities and the Long Row

The Entities -- the galaxy's million-year-old supercivilizations -- are acutely aware of the Long Row and its deterioration. Their hostility toward humanity is not arbitrary: it is a direct response to Kaiser Force technology's acceleration of entropy, which threatens the cosmic infrastructure the Long Row was built to maintain. From the Entities' perspective, humanity is a young, reckless species whose technological ambitions endanger billions of years of cosmic equilibrium.

David's negotiation with the Entities on the Central World of the Entities (Booklet 096) centers entirely on the Long Row. After absorbing the Connex Crystal and gaining the Old Knowledge, David convinces Ky and Renan Mer -- two Entities who support dialogue -- to reconsider the Final Strike by demonstrating that the Long Row can be reactivated. His argument transforms the equation: rather than destroying the species causing the problem, it is possible to solve the problem at its source by restoring the system the Ancients built.

The Entities agree to a conditional truce: if David can repel Valdec's incoming attack, they will suspend the Final Strike. The hardliner Entity Varen Navten dissents, but the majority accept David's promise. In the saga's finale (Booklet 099), the Entities hear David's galaxy-wide PSI call and acknowledge that he is keeping his cosmic promise -- the promise to reactivate the Long Row and cease the use of Kaiser Force.

The Long Row in the Saga's Climax

The saga's final arc (Booklets 094-099) is structured around the Long Row's reactivation:

Revelation (Booklet 094)

At the Old Forest, Luther Straightwire reveals the full history of the Pre-Cosmos, the Ancients, and the Long Row to David. He explains that David is one of nine Spectra who must unite to create the White Star and reactivate the system. Straightwire also warns about Ratatosk and the ongoing threat of Kaiser Force. David, Narda, and Aura Damona Mar depart aboard the Collector to find the Connex Crystal and begin the search for the other Spectra.

The Connex Crystal (Booklets 095-096)

At the Pyramid of Knowledge in Star City, David finds the Connex Crystal and selflessly uses it to stabilize the Archive against Kaiser Force emissions before absorbing it himself. On the Central World of the Entities, he gains the Old Knowledge and uses it to negotiate the conditional truce, demonstrating that the Long Row's reactivation is possible.

The Reality Switch (Booklets 097-098)

The Reality Switch -- a precosmic entity from the universe of the Ancients -- orchestrates the final confrontation as a "Duel of Dreams" between David and Valdec. Two alternate realities compete: "White" (a cooperative future where the Long Row functions) and "Black" (Valdec's dystopian Second Reich). The eight Cosmic Spectra held within the Reality Switch unify as David sacrifices himself to save the Paracletic Madonna, an entity whose subpsionic vibrations are essential for all life in the Milky Way. This act of selflessness triggers the victory of the "White" reality, negating Valdec's timeline and paving the way for the Long Row's restoration.

The Promise Kept (Booklet 099)

David returns to Ultima Thule, announces Valdec's death, and calls all Drivers to Earth, where Cosmic Spores are transforming the planet into a green, living world. The Drivers form a Lodge and send a galaxy-wide PSI call -- echoing Llewellyn 709's original call in Booklet 001. The Entities hear this call and understand that David is keeping his promise: the Long Row will be restored, and Kaiser Force will be eliminated. David departs aboard an Organ-Sailer to fulfill this cosmic mandate, while the JAMES COOK is dispatched to conclude a formal standstill agreement with the Entities.

Narrative Significance

The Cosmic Stakes

The Long Row elevates Die Terranauten from a saga of corporate warfare and political intrigue into a story about the fundamental structure of reality. Without the Long Row, the saga's conflicts -- mistletoe monopolies, Driver rebellions, Gray Guard atrocities -- are human-scale dramas. With it, every act of Kaiser Force deployment becomes a wound inflicted on the universe itself, and David's journey from fugitive Driver to cosmic savior acquires metaphysical weight.

Nature vs. Technology

The Long Row embodies the saga's central thesis: that organic, cooperative systems are superior to extractive, destructive technologies. The Long Row is a living machine built from plants, sustained by PSI, and operated by beings who chose symbiosis over domination. Kaiser Force is its antithesis -- a brute-force technology that achieves the same goal (faster-than-light travel) by tearing open the dimensional fabric the Long Row was built to protect. The saga's resolution -- the elimination of Kaiser Force and the ecological transformation of Earth -- is the Long Row's philosophical victory.

The Unfinished Quest

One of the saga's most provocative narrative choices is that the Long Row is never fully reactivated within the 99 booklets. David's departure aboard the Organ-Sailer in Booklet 099 represents a promise rather than a completion. The Entities acknowledge the promise. The Spectra begin to unify within the Reality Switch. But the saga ends with the Long Row's restoration as a future event -- a cosmic task left to be accomplished beyond the final page. This open ending transforms the Long Row from a plot device into a symbol: the work of saving the universe is never finished.

The Norse Mythological Framework

The Long Row extends the saga's deep engagement with Norse mythology. Just as the mythological Yggdrasil connects the nine worlds of Norse cosmology, the Long Row connects the galactic nodes of the anti-entropy network. The nine Spectra echo the nine worlds. Ratatosk, the squirrel-turned-entropy-parasite, maintains his role as the agent of discord running through the World Tree's structure. Even the name "Long Row" evokes the idea of an ordered sequence -- a chain of cosmic beings and structures stretching across the universe like the roots and branches of the mythological tree.
