Star City

Sternenstadt

"A city on an artificial world created by the Entities."
-- Description of Star City (Booklet 095)
"Nobody has promised us that Hephaistos is a naturally formed planet orbiting a sun."
-- Observation from the Terranaut expedition upon arrival (Booklet 093)

Star City (German: Sternenstadt) is a settlement on the surface of the artificial world Hephaistos, built by the Entities -- the galaxy's million-year-old supercivilizations also known as the Varen Navtem. Surrounding and adjacent to the colossal Pyramid of Knowledge, Star City serves as the point of arrival for visitors to the Entity Archive, housing learners, Knowledge Administrators, Lanja escorts, Transformers, and the diverse alien species who travel from across the galaxy to study at the Archive and bring knowledge home to their worlds.[^1][^2][^3]

Star City is the site of some of the most consequential events in the final arc of Die Terranauten: the arrival of the JAMES COOK expedition, the confrontation between Llewellyn 709 and an Entity seeking the Connex Crystal, the destruction of the JAMES COOK by Frost, the sacrifice of Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern, the recovery of the Connex Crystal by David terGorden, and the passage through the Sphere Tunnel to the Central World of the Entities. It is also the target of Max von Valdec's preemptive Kaiser Force attack -- an assault on the accumulated knowledge of the galaxy itself -- and the location whose betrayal by Frost triggers the chain of events leading to the Reality Switch, the Duel of Dreams, and the saga's resolution.[^4][^5][^6][^7]

Name and Identity

Star City and Hephaistos are intimately linked but distinct concepts in the saga's geography. Hephaistos is the artificial world (German: Kunstwelt) -- the planet-scale construction built by the Entities as the physical substrate of their Galactic Archive. Star City is the settlement on that world's surface, the inhabited urban environment where visitors arrive, where learners are received, and where the daily life of the Archive's caretakers unfolds.[^8][^9]

The name "Hephaistos" -- after the Greek god of the forge and divine craftsmanship -- reflects the world's artificial nature: it was made, not born. The name "Star City" (Sternenstadt) reflects the settlement's function: a cosmopolitan gathering place for beings from across the stars. The dual naming captures the location's dual purpose -- both archive and living community, both cosmic infrastructure and inhabited city.[^10]

In some sources, "Star City" is used interchangeably with "Hephaistos" when referring to the entire artificial world rather than the settlement alone.[^11][^12] This conflation is understandable: from the perspective of arriving visitors, the city and the world are inseparable, the settlement being the primary experience of anyone who comes to the Galactic Archive.

Nature and Description

An Artificial World

Star City exists on Hephaistos, a world constructed by the Entities at an unknown point in their million-year history. Hephaistos is not a natural planet -- it is an engineered artifact of planetary scale, designed specifically to house and protect the Pyramid of Knowledge and the living community that serves it.[^13] Its exact location in the galaxy is not specified in the source material, though it lies along the route from Genessos toward the galactic center, accessible by Driver-powered interstellar travel.[^14]

The Pyramid of Knowledge

The Pyramid of Knowledge (German: Pyramide des Wissens) dominates Star City's landscape. It is a colossal pyramidal structure containing the entire accumulated knowledge of the Entities and the civilizations under their influence -- a galactic archive spanning millions of years of history, science, culture, and philosophy.[^15] The Pyramid is not merely a passive repository but a living, quasi-intelligent system that actively manages, protects, and distributes knowledge to those who seek it.[^16]

The Pyramid was initially believed by the Terranauts to be the central power structure of the Entities themselves -- a misunderstanding corrected when the group discovered that the Entities' true home, the Central World of the Entities, lies beyond the Pyramid, accessible only through the Sphere Tunnel in its deepest reaches.[^17][^18]

The City Surface

The surface of Hephaistos surrounding the Pyramid is populated by "seemingly mindless beings" and bizarre Manifestations that reflect the subconscious desires and fears of visitors (Booklet 093).[^19] This suggests that Star City's surface functions as a kind of psionic mirror -- an extension of the Pyramid's reality-shaping technology that tests, catalogues, or simply reflects the inner lives of those who walk upon it. The distinction between "real" and "simulated" in Star City is deliberately blurred.[^20]

Internal Features of the Pyramid

Within the Pyramid of Knowledge, Star City's interior is complex and sometimes lethal:

The Pyramid is divided into zones, including an Outer Zone (Aussenzone) accessible to arriving visitors, deep interior corridors and chambers where knowledge is stored, and the Sphere Tunnel at its deepest point.[^29]

Purpose and Function

Galactic Repository of Knowledge

Star City's primary function is as the physical home of the Galactic Archive. The Pyramid of Knowledge contains the accumulated wisdom of the Entities and their allied civilizations -- a collection spanning millions of years. This archive is not merely stored but actively managed by the Pyramid's quasi-intelligent systems and its staff of Knowledge Administrators (German: Wissenswahrer or Wissensverwaltern).[^30]

The Pyramid's knowledge stores serve civilizations across the galaxy. Beings from distant worlds travel to Star City to study and return home with knowledge to solve their homeworlds' problems -- from ecological collapse to cultural stagnation.[^31] The system is deliberately inclusive: Star City is not an exclusive institution but a cosmopolitan center that welcomes learners from civilizations of varying technological and cultural levels.

Gateway to the Entities

Beyond its role as an archive, Star City is the gateway to the Entities themselves. The Sphere Tunnel within the Pyramid of Knowledge is the only known passage from Hephaistos to the Central World of the Entities.[^32] This makes Star City not merely a library but a threshold -- the crossing point between human-accessible space and the deeper cosmic realm of the galaxy's most powerful supercivilizations.[^33]

The Terranauts had to navigate through Star City's dangers to reach the Sphere Tunnel and ultimately plead humanity's case before the Entities -- a journey measured in lives lost.[^34]

Custodian of the Connex Crystal

The Connex Crystal -- a precosmic artifact containing the Old Knowledge of the Pre-Cosmos and essential for the reactivation of the Intercosmic Anti-Entropy System (the Long Row) -- was held within the Pyramid of Knowledge in Star City.[^35] Its presence made Star City a target for both the Entity that sought to seize it (Booklet 093) and for David terGorden, who was destined to absorb it as one of nine Spectra (Booklet 095).[^36]

Inhabitants and Visitors

Star City is populated and maintained by a complex ecology of beings:

Knowledge Administrators

The Knowledge Administrators (German: Wissenswahrer) are beings who manage and protect the Entity Archive. They greet arriving learners, explain their purpose, and guide them through the Archive's systems. Several alien species serve in this role, including the Amorphkafer (Amorph Beetles) and the Quasi-Spring Bear (Quasispringbar) -- alien organisms adapted to the Archive's unique environment.[^37]

Archive Administrator

Rehan holds the title of Archive Administrator (German: Archivverwalter) -- the being in overall charge of the Entity Archive. Rehan intervenes to help David terGorden and Narda navigate the Pyramid's dangers, revealing critical information about the Archive's destabilization and guiding them toward the Sphere Tunnel.[^38]

Arbitrators

The Arbitrators (German: Schlichter) are enforcer creatures tasked with eliminating any being that threatens the Archive's integrity. Under normal conditions, they target only genuine threats -- "transgressors" whose actions destabilize the Archive. When the Pyramid is destabilized by KF-emissions, the Arbitrators become increasingly aggressive, attacking anyone they perceive as a danger.[^39]

Lanja

The Lanja are representatives of a post-technical civilization who serve as escorts and guides, shepherding learners from across the galaxy to the Pyramid. They guide delegations like that of Trinanys-amh-Xar from Mharan to the Archive, helping them navigate the journey and the culture of Star City.[^40] The Lanjas also provide Null-Space Spheres for evacuation in emergencies.[^41]

Galactic Learners

The most prominent example of a learner at Star City is Trinanys-amh-Xar, a learner from the planet Mharan, who arrives at the Pyramid along with other Hort-relatives -- including his First-Sister Delian-amh-Kri -- guided by a Lanja.[^42] Trinanys represents a pre-spacefaring species whose homeworld faces ecological collapse. His arrival provides a perspective on the Pyramid from outside the Terranaut narrative -- revealing Star City as a galactic institution serving countless worlds, not merely the backdrop for human drama.[^43]

Trinanys's culture possesses its own complex social structures -- First-Sisters, First-Brothers, Half-Fathers, Third-Fathers, Conception Ladies -- and physiological features such as Body-Fluff (Korperflaum) and Division Shadows (Teilungsschatten), illustrating the diversity of species the Archive serves.[^44]

Key Events at Star City

Arrival of the JAMES COOK (Booklet 093)

The JAMES COOK expedition -- a Terranaut peace mission dispatched from Sarym to contact the Entities and negotiate a standstill agreement -- arrived at Hephaistos circa 2587 AD. Llewellyn 709 led a delegation to the surface aboard the Ringo JAMES COOK Eins to investigate the Pyramid of Knowledge, which they believed to be the central power structure of the Entities. The expedition was compromised from the outset: Frost, posing as the Special Representative of Earth, had secret orders to locate the Entities' central worlds and transmit their coordinates to Max von Valdec for a preemptive annihilation strike using the Kaiser Force Lance.[^45][^46]

Confrontation with the Entity (Booklet 093)

An individual Entity traveled to Hephaistos specifically to seize the Connex Crystal, knowing it was in the possession of a human. Jana, the Lodge Mistress who carried the Crystal, disappeared -- drawn toward the Entity by the Crystal's influence. A violent confrontation erupted on a hilltop near the Pyramid:[^47]

Destruction of the JAMES COOK (Booklet 093)

While the delegation explored Star City, Silent Chorp remained aboard the JAMES COOK and uncovered Frost's true plan. Frost had concealed a Kaiser Force space fighter in the ship's cargo holds. Frost and Isis 31 launched the hidden fighter, and the violent Kaiser Force transition tore the JAMES COOK apart. Three crew members were killed in the destruction: Sardina Giccomo, Serge-Serge Suvez, and Altamont O'Hale.[^50] The wreckage of the JAMES COOK was left at Hephaistos -- the ship's final resting place.[^51]

Arrival of Trinanys-amh-Xar (Booklet 095)

Separately from the Terranaut narrative, Trinanys-amh-Xar arrived at Star City from Mharan with a delegation of learners guided by a Lanja. They were greeted by Knowledge Administrators who explained their purpose: to learn and help their homeworld. This parallel storyline reveals Star City's galactic function as an institution serving countless civilizations -- even as the Terranaut crisis threatens to destroy it.[^52]

Destabilization by Kaiser Force Emissions (Booklet 095)

Frost's transmitted coordinates enabled Max von Valdec's fleet to approach Hephaistos. The **KF-emissions** -- entropy-accelerating emissions from the approaching fleet's Kaiser Force technology -- began to destabilize the Pyramid of Knowledge. The consequences were catastrophic:[^53]
  • The Archive's internal reality fragmented[^54]
  • Wandering Real Data Zones became increasingly dangerous and autonomous[^55]
  • The Arbitrators grew more aggressive, attacking anyone they perceived as a threat[^56]
  • Mater Lian, a former Gray Guard Driver and member of Jana's lodge, died from the KF-emissions[^57]
  • Llewellyn 709 was put into a psionic coma by the emissions[^58]
  • Angila Fraim, one of the saga's longest-serving secondary characters, was killed by the Arbitrators[^59]

The Sacrifice of Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern (Booklet 095)

In the saga's most explicit statement of its deepest theme, Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern -- lifelong companions bonded since their days aboard the prospector ship SAPHYR -- sacrificed themselves to stop the Arbitrators. They did not fight the creatures with PSI combat or tactical ingenuity but disarmed them through an act of pure compassion, demonstrating "love" to eliminate the Arbitrators' will to kill.[^60]

This sacrifice is one of the most significant moments in all of Die Terranauten. Two beings who had evolved from prisoners and operatives into cosmic Fast-Steerers chose empathy over violence, proving that not all humans are destroyers. Their act cleared the path for David terGorden to find the Connex Crystal and lead the surviving Terranauts through the Sphere Tunnel.[^61]

Arrival of David terGorden and Narda (Booklet 095)

David terGorden and Narda, piloting a Collector -- a quasi-intelligent plant spaceship cultivated specifically for David -- arrived at Star City seeking the Connex Crystal to gain the Old Knowledge and reactivate the Weapon of the Ancients.[^62] They encountered Wandering Real Data Zones and were separated from Llewellyn 709's group before reuniting.[^63]

Recovery of the Connex Crystal (Booklet 095)

David terGorden found the Connex Crystal within the Pyramid of Knowledge. Facing a moral dilemma -- he could absorb it immediately to gain the Old Knowledge, or use its power to stabilize the crumbling Archive -- David chose selflessness. He used the Crystal to stabilize the Archive first, delaying his own empowerment to save the countless beings who depend on the Pyramid's knowledge stores.[^64]

Meanwhile, a Wandering Helper attempted to awaken the Sleeping Information -- latent knowledge implanted in David's subconscious by the Steerers -- preparing him for the cosmic role ahead.[^65]

Passage Through the Sphere Tunnel (Booklet 095)

David then led his companions through the Sphere Tunnel -- the tube-like hyperspace conduit within the Pyramid's deepest reaches -- to the Central World of the Entities, where the saga's climactic negotiations would take place. The Sphere Tunnel is the only known passage to the Entities' home, making the Pyramid the threshold that the Terranauts had to cross to reach the beings who could either destroy or save humanity.[^66]

Valdec's Kaiser Force Attack on Star City (Booklet 095)

Max von Valdec's fleet, guided by Frost's transmitted coordinates, launched a Kaiser Force attack on Star City. This attack represented an assault not merely on a location but on the accumulated knowledge of the galaxy itself. Valdec believed Star City to be the Entities' central base -- unaware that the true Central World of the Entities lies beyond, accessible only through the Sphere Tunnel.[^67][^68]

The consequences rippled outward: the Entities debated whether to launch a Final Strike against all of humanity in response. On the Central World of the Entities, David terGorden warned the Entities Ky and Renan Mer about the incoming attack and negotiated a conditional truce: if David could repel Valdec's attack, the Entities would suspend the Final Strike.[^69][^70]

The Reality Switch (Booklet 097)

The Reality Switch -- a precosmic entity from the universe of the Ancients -- was triggered in response to Valdec's attack on the Entities' worlds, including Star City. Valdec's Steel Fleet was trapped within the Reality Switch, which orchestrated the Duel of Dreams between David terGorden and Valdec -- the saga's climactic confrontation that determined the fate of humanity.[^71][^72]

Relationship to Other Entity Locations

Star City exists within a network of Entity-controlled locations, each serving a distinct function:

LocationFunctionRelationship to Star City
HephaistosArtificial world (Kunstwelt)Star City is the inhabited settlement on Hephaistos's surface[^75]
Pyramid of KnowledgeColossal archive structureThe Pyramid dominates Star City's landscape; Star City exists to serve and surround the Pyramid[^76]
Sphere TunnelHyperspace conduitLocated within the Pyramid's deepest reaches; the only known passage from Star City to the Central World[^77]
Central World of the EntitiesPrivate homeworld and memory anchor of the EntitiesAccessible only through the Sphere Tunnel; the Entities' true home beyond Star City's public Archive[^78]

This hierarchy is critical to understanding the saga's geography of power: Star City is the Entities' public face -- the institution they share with the galaxy. The Central World of the Entities is their private domain -- the place where they remember, deliberate, and decide. Frost located Star City but never discovered the Central World itself, meaning that Valdec's fleet attacked the Entities' archive, not their home -- a provocation that deepened the crisis but did not constitute an existential threat to the Entities themselves.[^79]

The Betrayal: How Star City's Location Was Revealed

The discovery and betrayal of Star City's location is the hinge on which the saga's entire final arc turns.

Frost's Mission

Frost, Max von Valdec's most loyal operative, infiltrated the Terranaut expedition aboard the JAMES COOK with a hidden mission: to locate the Entities' central worlds and transmit their coordinates to Valdec for destruction by the Kaiser Force Lance. He concealed a Kaiser Force space fighter in the JAMES COOK's cargo holds and brought two Super-Driver clones -- Thor 51 and Isis 31 -- conditioned to his personal control.[^80][^81]

Silent Chorp's Discovery

Silent Chorp, a mute young Driver with powerful telepathic abilities, uncovered Frost's plan aboard the JAMES COOK. He discovered that Frost intended to transmit the coordinates of Hephaistos to Valdec. Despite Chorp's efforts to stop the escape, Frost and Isis 31 launched the hidden fighter, destroying the JAMES COOK in the process.[^82]

The Transmission

Frost transmitted the coordinates of Star City to Valdec -- an act described in stark terms: "Frost betrays Llewellyn and informs Valdec of the Star City's location" (Booklet 095).[^83] This single act of betrayal set in motion the chain of events that would determine the fate of humanity:

  1. Valdec's fleet approached Star City, its KF-emissions destabilizing the Pyramid of Knowledge[^84]
  2. The destabilization killed Mater Lian, incapacitated Llewellyn 709, and triggered the Arbitrators' rampage[^85]
  3. Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern sacrificed themselves to stop the Arbitrators[^86]
  4. Valdec's fleet launched a Kaiser Force attack on Star City[^87]
  5. The attack provoked the Entities' debate over the Final Strike against humanity[^88]
  6. The Reality Switch was triggered to trap Valdec's fleet and orchestrate the Duel of Dreams[^89]
  7. David terGorden defeated Valdec in the Duel of Dreams, saving humanity[^90]

Without Frost's betrayal at Star City, none of these events would have occurred. Star City is thus the location where the saga's endgame begins.

Significance

Custodian of Galactic Knowledge

As the physical home of the Galactic Archive, Star City embodies the Entities' deepest purpose: the preservation and dissemination of knowledge across cosmic time. When Valdec's Kaiser Force attack destabilizes the Archive, it threatens not just the Entities but every species that depends on the Pyramid's knowledge stores -- from the learners of Mharan to the Knowledge Administrators who tend the Archive. David terGorden's decision to use the Connex Crystal to stabilize the Archive rather than empower himself reflects this ethic: knowledge must be preserved for all, not seized by one.[^91]

Gateway to the Central World

Star City serves as the gateway between human-accessible space and the deeper cosmic realm of the Entities. The Sphere Tunnel within the Pyramid of Knowledge is the only known passage to the Central World of the Entities, making Star City the threshold the Terranauts had to cross to reach the beings who could either destroy or save humanity. Without navigating Star City's dangers, David terGorden could never have negotiated the conditional truce that averts the Final Strike.[^92]

Site of Cosmic Sacrifice

Star City is the location where the saga's theme of sacrifice reaches its climax. The sacrifices that occur here form a crescendo of loss that establishes the moral stakes of the final confrontation:

The message is clear: reaching the Entities and saving humanity requires not just courage but the willingness to give everything.

Catalyst for the Final Arc

Frost's betrayal at Star City -- his destruction of the JAMES COOK and transmission of coordinates to Valdec -- is the hinge on which the saga's entire final arc turns. Without Frost's betrayal, Valdec would not have the coordinates for his preemptive strike. Without the preemptive strike, the Reality Switch would not have been triggered. Without the Reality Switch, the Duel of Dreams between David and Valdec would not have occurred. Star City is thus the location where the saga's endgame begins.[^98]

Symbol of Knowledge Under Threat

The destabilization of the Pyramid of Knowledge by KF-emissions serves as the saga's most powerful symbol of what Kaiser Force threatens: not merely lives or planets but knowledge itself -- the accumulated wisdom of millions of years of galactic civilization. When the Archive fragments, when the Wandering Real Data Zones become lethal, when the Arbitrators turn on those they should protect, Star City embodies the cosmic cost of entropy-accelerating technology. The attack on Star City is an attack on memory, on learning, on the very concept of civilizational continuity.[^99]

Themes

Knowledge as Sacred Trust

Star City embodies the principle that knowledge is not a commodity to be exploited but a trust to be maintained across cosmic time. The Knowledge Administrators serve it. The Arbitrators protect it. The Lanja escort learners to it. David terGorden's decision to use the Connex Crystal to stabilize the Archive rather than empower himself reflects this ethic at its most personal: when forced to choose between self-advancement and the preservation of galactic knowledge, David chooses knowledge. This is the test Star City poses to everyone who enters it.[^100]

Sacrifice as Passage

Every step closer to the Entities requires a sacrifice. Cantos sacrificed himself on Genessos to get the group to Star City. Thor 51 died confronting the Entity. The JAMES COOK crew died when Frost destroyed the ship. Mater Lian, Angila Fraim, Scanner Cloud, and Morgenstern all fell at Star City. The city is not merely a location but a crucible -- a place that burns away everything except the essential moral purpose of those who pass through it.[^101]

Love Over Violence

The sacrifice of Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern at Star City is the saga's clearest statement of this theme. The Arbitrators -- creatures designed to kill -- are not defeated through PSI combat, tactical ingenuity, or technological superiority. They are disarmed through an act of love that eliminates their will to kill. At Star City, the saga argues that the highest form of power is compassion, and that the only force capable of stopping violence at the cosmic scale is the willingness to meet it with empathy rather than reciprocal destruction.[^102]

The Artificial and the Living

Named for the divine craftsman of Greek mythology, Hephaistos and its Star City blur the boundary between the constructed and the organic. The Pyramid's Manifestations respond to visitors' subconscious. Its Wandering Real Data Zones make information physically real. Its Arbitrators and Wandering Helpers are neither fully artificial nor fully alive. This ambiguity mirrors the saga's central tension between technology (the Kaiser Force, which destroys) and biology (the World Trees, the Green Partners, the Cosmic Spores, which sustain).[^103]

The Public and the Private

Star City represents the Entities' public function: the dissemination and preservation of knowledge for all civilizations. The Central World of the Entities represents their private reality: the place where they remember, deliberate, and decide. This distinction between public archive and private sanctum is central to the saga's geography of power -- and to the irony of Valdec's attack, which strikes the Entities' public face without ever reaching their private domain.[^104]

Star City appears or is referenced in 4 of 99 booklets of Die Terranauten (093, 095, 096, 097) and across 43 enriched pages in the saga's encyclopedia. Though it features in only a handful of issues, it is one of the saga's most cosmically significant locations -- the galactic archive-city where knowledge is preserved across the ages, where Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern proved that love is stronger than violence, where David terGorden chose selflessness over power, and where Frost's betrayal set in motion the chain of events that determined the fate of humanity.
