"He wore golden straps across his body to contain the lethal PSI radiation that poured from him -- and when he removed them, entire armies fell."
-- Description from Booklet 001
Llewellyn 709, universally known as the Riemenmann (the "Strapman"), is the second most prominent character in Die Terranauten, appearing in 53 of the saga's 99 booklets. A super-Driver of extraordinary psionic power, Llewellyn is defined by the golden straps he wears across his body to contain the lethal PSI radiation that emanates from him -- a physical manifestation of both his tremendous gift and its terrible cost. From his galaxy-wide PSI call in Booklet 001 that ignites the Driver rebellion, to his presence beside David terGorden in the Reality Switch during the saga's climactic Duel of Dreams, Llewellyn serves as David's most constant companion, the revolution's fiercest warrior, and the saga's embodiment of sacrifice without compromise.
Biography
Origins: Mar-Estos and the Terranaut Underground (c. 2475)
Llewellyn 709's story begins long before the saga's opening. In the flashback booklets (030-031), his former identity is revealed: he was once Mar-Estos, nephew of Growan terGorden and a companion of Myriam -- David terGorden's mother. As Mar-Estos, he was a Terranaut leader who supported the Drivers' cause, tried to protect Myriam from the machinations of Clint Gayheen, and exposed Gayheen's treachery to Growan. He was Myriam's ally and confidant during the dangerous period of the Yggdrasil Project, appearing alongside her in meetings with other Terranauts to discuss their plans for liberation. Mar-Estos was described as Growan's nephew who "supports the Drivers and is suspicious of Clint Gayheen" -- already showing the instinctive vigilance and loyalty that would define his later life.
At some point between 2475 and 2499, Mar-Estos underwent the transformation into a Riemenmann -- a process of extreme PSI enhancement that reshaped his body, vastly amplified his psionic abilities, and left him emitting lethal PSI radiation that required constant containment through the golden strap-weave he became famous for. The circumstances of this transformation remain one of the saga's deliberate mysteries, though it is clear that it cost him much of his former identity. When characters encounter the consciousness of Mar-Estos in the Maritime Coral City on Sarym (Booklets 042, 061), they recognize it as a "former self" of Llewellyn 709, suggesting the transformation was so profound that it effectively created a new person.
The Galaxy-Wide Call and the Birth of the Rebellion (2499)
When the saga opens in Booklet 001, Llewellyn 709 is already established on Syrta as a legendary figure among the Drivers -- a super-Driver whose reputation precedes him. Stardust-Dave (David terGorden) specifically seeks him out as a contact when fleeing the forces of the Council of Corporations. Llewellyn is captured by Vanducci, the security manager of the Kaiser Corporation branch on Syrta, and interrogated, but is eventually released. Together with other Terranauts, he storms the Kaiser branch and rescues David.
It is Llewellyn's actions in these opening booklets that set the entire saga in motion. After David confronts Queen Fay Gray and forces the Gray Guards to withdraw, Llewellyn unleashes a PSI storm that paralyzes the Syrtian government troops, then sends a telepathic message across the galaxy, calling all Drivers to Syrta and declaring David terGorden the "Heir of Power" as foretold in the BOOK MYRIAM (Booklet 001). This galaxy-wide PSI call -- an act requiring immense psionic power -- triggers the convergence of a massive Driver fleet on Syrta, marking the beginning of the galactic rebellion (Booklet 002).
In Booklet 002, Llewellyn and Norwy van Dyne storm the Kaiser Corporation branch a second time to rescue David, who had surrendered himself to secure passage to Terra. However, Asi Caruga sabotages the FENRISWOLF, preventing Llewellyn and Asen-Ger from following David to Earth. This separation forces Llewellyn into an independent thread of action that repeatedly parallels and intersects with David's journey.
The Insurrection and Escape from Earth (2499-2500)
On Terra, following Valdec's sabotaged Kaiser Force demonstration and the subsequent pogrom against Drivers, Llewellyn escapes the Gray Guards and vows to fight back (Booklet 004). Growan terGorden, David's dying father, offers Llewellyn a deal: he will help the Terranauts if they help him regain control of Biotroniks A/S, find David, and destroy Valdec. Llewellyn accepts this pragmatic alliance. He issues a secret broadcast warning all Drivers of their impending imprisonment, sparking violent clashes with the Gray Guards across the planet.
When David, Lithe, and the Gray Guard defector Flint arrive at Growan's palace, they find Llewellyn already there. Growan passes his legacy to David before dying, and the group -- David, Llewellyn, Lithe, and Flint -- escapes the besieged palace with the help of Merlin III and Norwy van Dyne, fleeing Earth aboard a Razzo (Booklet 004). From this point, Llewellyn and David's paths diverge: David enters Space II and encounters Yggdrasil, while Llewellyn is captured and imprisoned.
The Dead Spaces and the Rescue of David (Booklet 009)
Booklet 009, "The Hour of the Strapman," is Llewellyn's signature solo adventure. Imprisoned in the Dead Spaces -- a brutal PSI-shielded bunker complex beneath Berlin -- Llewellyn discovers a potential escape route and leads a breakout, fighting off the "Dark Ones" (prisoners driven mad by the Dead Spaces) with the reluctant help of Scanner Cloud, whom he initially distrusts as a spy. Companions Altamont O'Hale and Serge-Serge Suvez sacrifice themselves to allow the escapees to flee.
Aided by Hanstein, a former Manag turned Noman, and then by the conflicted Mater Pernath -- a PSI specialist who provides them with a magnetic glider and directs them to Stojska-Stellar spaceport before committing suicide -- Llewellyn, Angila Fraim, Sardina Giccomo, and Ishmail Tout hijack a Ringo spacecraft and attack the energy satellite ES-50, where David is being held. Ishmail Tout is killed in the assault, but Queen Mandorla, who has secretly defected from Valdec's service, helps David fake his death and escape. This rescue cements the bond between Llewellyn and David and demonstrates the pattern that defines Llewellyn throughout the saga: relentless, resourceful action in the face of overwhelming odds, always at great personal cost.
The Moon Dungeons, the MIDAS, and Exile in Intergalactic Space (Booklets 010-026)
Llewellyn and David are banished to Luna, where they join Scanner Cloud's prisoner revolt (Booklet 010). Cloud's plan involves using Leande, a shattered computer technician, to disable the prison's central computer. Llewellyn and other Drivers enter Leande's mind to heal her -- an act of collective psionic therapy. The revolt succeeds in capturing the MIDAS, an experimental Kaiser Force ship. David, recognizing the danger of the Kaiser Force drive, leaves the ship, but Llewellyn stays aboard. The MIDAS activates its drive with disastrous consequences: most of the crew are killed or transformed into "Glassy Ones," and the ship is flung into intergalactic space.
This begins one of the saga's most distinctive arcs for Llewellyn. In Booklet 014, "In the Realm of the Winged," he awakens on the wrecked MIDAS, discovers the horrifying Glassy Ones, and rallies the survivors. Working alongside Scanner Cloud, he helps navigate the ship past a Black Hole near the green sun Moloch, crash-landing on the planet Hobo. There, Llewellyn and Scanner Cloud are captured by the winged Ashras but ultimately forge an alliance with them, using holographic technology to drive away the colonizing Zoptics and save the native population. This arc shows Llewellyn as a problem-solver and diplomat, not merely a warrior.
By Booklet 026, the MIDAS is trapped in Kaiser Force-induced energetic instability near the destroyed Spilter System. Llewellyn leads the Drivers in investigating Scanner Cloud's mysterious telepathic communications, eventually escaping on the CYGNI from Argus with David and others. Llewellyn and the Driver lodge power the CYGNI's escape into Space II. Throughout this period, Llewellyn acts as the de facto military leader of the Terranauts in space, while David operates on a more visionary level.
Rorqual, Shondyke, and the Pirate Lodge (Booklets 028-036)
On Rorqual, Llewellyn participates in expeditions alongside David, exploring the strange planet trapped between dimensions. In Booklet 029, he and David lead a glider expedition to Pitcairn, encountering fog illusions created by Banshees. David saves Llewellyn from a possessed Driver, and together they break through Leande's Banshee-controlled consciousness, freeing her. Tensions between Llewellyn, David, and Asen-Ger surface over strategy -- a recurring dynamic in which Llewellyn's militant instincts clash with Asen-Ger's political caution and David's cosmic perspective.
In Booklets 035-036, Llewellyn travels with David, Queen Mandorla, and Scanner Cloud to Shondyke -- the secret heart of the Gray Guards -- via space roads from Rubin and the abandoned alien city of Bortzynn. Their mission is to free Yggdrasil's cutting. When the Super-Drivers Ares 17, Artemis 11, and Plutos 23 attack Arda-City, Scanner Cloud convinces David and Llewellyn that they must help the Grays to save themselves. In the climactic confrontation, Llewellyn kills Ares 17 in a psionic duel, triggering the Super-Driver's own killer block (Booklet 036). This is one of the saga's most dramatic demonstrations of Llewellyn's raw PSI power -- defeating a being specifically engineered to be a psionic weapon.
Capture, Impersonation, and the Valhala 13 Crisis (Booklets 045-048)
Booklet 045, "Llewellyn's Gambit," marks a devastating turning point. Llewellyn has a vision of Stonehenge II and believes it holds the key to his past. Against the concerns of his crew aboard the CYGNI, he launches a solo mission to the planet. He encounters the native Stonemen, enters an ancient Ark, and is cornered by Queen Ishiya's forces. In desperation, Llewellyn removes his PSI-dampening straps, unleashing a catastrophic PSI-storm that causes chaos and distorts reality. But Valhala 13 -- another Riemenmann, bred by the Gray Guards specifically as Llewellyn's double -- subdues him with a stunner, closes his straps, and takes his place.
Llewellyn is imprisoned in a deep-sleep capsule while Valhala 13, impersonating him perfectly, is extracted by the CYGNI and infiltrates the Terranauts. On Rorqual, Valhala attacks and seemingly kills several Terranauts, including David. It is Lyda Mar who first senses the imposter's true nature (Booklet 046). The real Llewellyn is eventually freed from the Council station on Quostan by the PSI-assassin Ruben Carcones, and is rescued by Lyda Mar and Claude Farrell. They escape aboard the CYGNI and head to Earth to find the antidote to the Hate Plague -- a virus that was designed to activate upon contact with Llewellyn's PSI signature (using the identity of Mar-Estos as a trigger).
In Booklet 048, Llewellyn is pulled through a rift to an unknown planet near a Black Hole alongside David and Lyda Mar. They sacrifice Valhala 13 to close the rift and prevent catastrophe -- a grim resolution to the doppelganger arc that haunted the middle saga.
The Battle for Earth and the Second Driver Age (Booklets 050-070)
In Booklet 050, Llewellyn participates in the critical negotiations and battle that end the Kaiser Force era. On Rorqual, he argues against any pacts with the Council, advocating for breaking apart the corporations entirely -- a harder line than Asen-Ger's willingness to compromise. When Cantos the Genessaner arrives warning of alien retaliation for Kaiser Force's cosmic damage, Llewellyn accompanies the Terranauts to Earth. During the alien attack that transforms Berlin into a swamp, Llewellyn and Cantos are themselves transformed into reptilian creatures, then Llewellyn gains the ability to fly as a "giant bird" before the PSI-field collapses. He remains on Earth with Asen-Ger, Narda, and Mandorla to track down Kormolan Jilith after David departs for Rorqual (Booklet 050).
In the Wreckage Nebula arc (Booklet 055), Llewellyn leads Hadersen Wells's lodge aboard the GARIBALDI, seeking to reach David on Rorqual. He uncovers that lodge member Luther Straightwire is an imposter with a dead man's skull. After the GARIBALDI is destroyed, Llewellyn discovers that the Shadows are PSI vampires draining the Drivers' energy, and receives a message from Straightwire revealing a Potential Amplifier -- hints of the deeper cosmic machinery at work.
On Sarym, Llewellyn crash-lands on the North Continent with Lyda Mar and encounters the Maritime Coral City's PSI-aura, where he meets an echo of his past self, Mar-Estos (Booklet 061). In the subsequent War of Minds (Booklet 063), he and Lyda are captured by the rogue Super-Driver Prometheus 107, but Lyda -- aided by her unborn daughter Aura Damona Mar -- transports them to the heart of the PSI-aura, where the Super-Drivers are destroyed. Llewellyn's willingness to enter impossible danger alongside Lyda Mar defines one of the saga's most important partnerships.
In the Silent Drivers crisis (Booklet 070), Llewellyn participates in the Terranaut discussions about the mysterious illness affecting former PSI-gifted individuals on Sarym, as the Terranauts grapple with the consequences of Valdec's systematic stripping of Driver abilities.
Commander of the Terranaut Fleet (Booklets 075-083)
By the mid-to-late saga, Llewellyn emerges as the operational military leader of the Terranauts. In Booklet 075, he commands the IRMINSUL in an assault on the Gray Guard base at Finstermann, a wandering planet orbiting a Black Hole. He countermands Dime Mow's order to kill all Gray Guard personnel -- showing that his militancy has limits rooted in principle. When captured and brought before Queen Brainflakes, he uses his PSI powers to telekinetically manipulate the base's computer systems and reprograms the Gray Guard's Kaiser Force tugs to plunge into the Black Hole -- an act of devastating tactical brilliance. He also receives telepathic communications from an alien entity named "Sam" and discovers that Silent Chorp, his own mute adjutant, is a traitor.
In Booklet 083, Llewellyn leads a rescue mission to the TAMERLAN, a freighter overrun by Cosmic Spores. He and Mandorla discover the transformed crew and attempt to rescue the hibernating Silent Drivers, but their ship is attacked by spores, forcing them to eject in escape pods. While David departs aboard the Collector to seek the Buds of the Tree, Llewellyn stays behind to manage the crisis on Sarym -- always the one who holds the line while others pursue destiny.
The JAMES COOK Expedition and the Galactic Archive (Booklets 090-095)
In Booklet 090, the JAMES COOK departs for Genessos carrying Frost, Llewellyn, and a Terranaut delegation alongside Super-Driver clones conditioned to serve Valdec's hidden agenda. Llewellyn is suspicious of Frost and the "New Earth" regime from the start. In Booklet 093, at the Galactic Archive on Hephaistos, Llewellyn leads the delegation to the Pyramid of Knowledge. He discovers that Jana's disappearance is connected to the Connex Crystal and an Entity seeking it. In a confrontation on a hilltop, Llewellyn, aided by the New Steerers, thwarts the Entity and rescues Jana, securing the Connex Crystal. However, Frost escapes with Isis 31, destroying the JAMES COOK and betraying the expedition's location to Valdec.
In Booklet 095, at Star City, Llewellyn leads the surviving Terranauts through the Pyramid of Knowledge, seeking to contact the Entities and prevent Valdec's Kaiser Force attack. He is put into a coma by KF-emissions but his group persists. Frost's betrayal -- transmitting the Star City's location to Valdec -- is revealed. Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern sacrifice themselves to stop the Arbitrators, and Claude Farrell takes command after Llewellyn is incapacitated. David arrives with the Collector, finds the Connex Crystal, and leads the group through the Sphere Tunnel to the Entities' Central World. Even in his incapacitated state, Llewellyn's leadership brought the Terranauts to the threshold of cosmic contact.
The Reality Switch and the Duel of Dreams (Booklets 097-098)
Within the Reality Switch -- a precosmic entity orchestrating the final confrontation between David and Valdec -- Llewellyn encounters a Quasireal that restores his physical and emotional well-being (Booklet 097). He then finds David encased in a Null-Sphere. The Reality Switch reveals to Llewellyn that David is a key figure in a cosmic struggle against entropy and that Valdec is the "Antagonist" -- giving Llewellyn the understanding that the conflict he has fought for decades is not merely political but cosmological.
In Booklet 098, "Duel of Dreams," Llewellyn appears in both the "White" (hopeful) and "Black" (dystopian) realities generated by the Realschalter. When Valdec's "Black" reality dissolves into nothingness, it is Llewellyn who confronts Valdec in the void -- a fitting culmination of the Strapman's role as the revolution's unyielding conscience. David's selfless sacrifice to save the Paracletic Madonna triggers the victory of the "White" reality, and the "Black" timeline is negated forever.
The Eco-Shock and the New Era (Booklet 099)
In the saga's finale, Llewellyn is present in Ultima Thule as Cosmic Spores transform Earth into a green, living world. David announces Valdec's death and the end of corporate rule. The Drivers form a Lodge and send a galaxy-wide PSI call -- a deliberate echo of Llewellyn's original call from Booklet 001 -- and the Entities acknowledge that David is keeping his cosmic promise. Llewellyn remains on Earth as David departs aboard an Organ-Sailer to eliminate Kaiser Force forever. The circle closes: the man who called the galaxy to rebellion now witnesses the dawn of the new world that rebellion made possible.

Abilities and Traits
- Extreme PSI Power: Llewellyn possesses psionic abilities far beyond those of ordinary Drivers, powerful enough to send a telepathic message across the entire galaxy (001) and to reprogram computer systems telekinetically (075). His PSI radiation is lethal to those nearby, requiring constant containment.
- The Golden Straps (Riemen): The strap-weave covering Llewellyn's body is both a containment system and his defining visual characteristic. Removing the straps unleashes catastrophic PSI-storms that distort reality itself (045). The straps are simultaneously a symbol of restraint and of the terrible power held in check.
- Lodge Leadership: Capable of leading Driver lodges in Space II navigation, PSI-shielding, and combined psionic operations. He powers the CYGNI's escape from Argus (026) and leads the lodge aboard the JAMES COOK (090-093).
- Tactical and Military Command: Commands the IRMINSUL assault on Finstermann (075), leads the TAMERLAN rescue mission (083), and heads the JAMES COOK expedition (090-095). His operational instincts are consistently sound.
- Psionic Combat: Defeats Ares 17 in direct psionic duel (036), overpowers Gray Guard forces on multiple occasions, and thwarts an Entity on Hephaistos (093).
- Physical Resilience: Survives the MIDAS catastrophe (010-014), crash-landings on Hobo (014), Sarym (061, 063), and Arioch (083), deep-sleep imprisonment (045-046), and KF-emission coma (095).
- Moral Compass: Countermands orders to massacre prisoners (075), accepts pragmatic alliances when necessary (004), and maintains principled opposition to compromise with Valdec even when allies disagree (050).

Themes and Legacy
Llewellyn 709's arc embodies the central tensions of Die Terranauten from a different angle than David terGorden's. Where David is the reluctant messiah, Llewellyn is the willing soldier who must learn the limits of force. Where David seeks cosmic meaning, Llewellyn inhabits the immediate, the tactical, the urgently necessary.
The Man in the Straps: Llewellyn's golden strap-weave is the saga's most powerful visual metaphor. He is a man whose greatest gift -- his extraordinary PSI power -- is also a lethal danger to everyone around him. The straps do not cure this condition; they merely contain it. To fully deploy his abilities, he must risk destroying everything nearby, as when he unleashes the PSI-storm on Stonehenge II (045). This paradox -- that his power is inseparable from its destructiveness -- mirrors the saga's central argument about Kaiser Force: technology that tears open Space II brings faster-than-light travel but also entropic catastrophe. Llewellyn is, in a sense, a biological Kaiser Force -- immense potential held in check by fragile bonds.
The Catalyst and the Witness: The saga begins and ends with a galaxy-wide PSI call. In Booklet 001, it is Llewellyn who sends the message that calls the Drivers to rebellion and names David the Heir of Power. In Booklet 099, the Drivers form a Lodge and send a PSI call that the Entities themselves acknowledge. Llewellyn is present at both moments -- the one who lit the spark and the one who watches the fire transform the world. He is the saga's great catalyst: without his call, the rebellion never crystallizes; without his decades of fighting, David never reaches the Reality Switch. Yet Llewellyn is not the chosen one. He is the man who recognizes the chosen one and spends his life making that destiny possible.
Mar-Estos and the Cost of Transformation: The revelation that Llewellyn was once Mar-Estos -- Growan's nephew, Myriam's companion, a Terranaut leader with a name and a family -- deepens his tragedy immeasurably. The transformation into a Riemenmann did not merely enhance his abilities; it erased his former self so thoroughly that encounters with Mar-Estos's consciousness are described as meeting a "former self," as if speaking of the dead. Llewellyn's search for his past on Stonehenge II (045) and his encounter with Mar-Estos's echo in the Maritime Coral City (061) suggest a longing for the identity he sacrificed to become the weapon the revolution needed.
Militancy and Moral Limits: Llewellyn consistently advocates the hardest line among the Terranaut leadership -- against compromise with the Council (050), against half-measures, against trusting Frost or Valdec's envoys. Yet he is not without moral limits. He countermands Dime Mow's order to massacre Gray Guard prisoners (075), showing that his militancy is principled rather than bloodthirsty. He accepts Growan's pragmatic deal (004) because it serves the cause. He helps the Gray Guards on Shondyke (036) because Scanner Cloud convinces him that survival requires it. Llewellyn's moral code is not rigid ideology but a warrior's ethics: fight hard, protect your own, and never become the thing you are fighting against.
The Eternal Second: Appearing in 53 of 99 booklets, Llewellyn is the saga's second most frequent character. This structural position mirrors his narrative role: he is always beside David, but never ahead of him. He leads when David is absent, holds the line when David pursues cosmic destiny, and steps back when David returns. This is not subordination but complementarity -- the saga would be unthinkable without either of them. If David is the soul of the Terranauts, Llewellyn is their iron fist, their tactical mind, and their unbreakable will.
Llewellyn 709 appears in 53 of 99 booklets of Die Terranauten. He is the second most frequently appearing character in the saga, after David terGorden.
