Ultima Thule

"A palace in the ice of Greenland, built atop the Holy Valley where Yggdrasil grows -- fortress of the most powerful corporation in human civilization, and tomb of the man who built it."

Ultima Thule is the capital city of Greenland and the headquarters of the Biotroniks Corporation, the most powerful enterprise in the Council of Corporations. Built atop and around the Holy Valley of Odrodir -- the sacred grove where the primeval tree Yggdrasil grows -- Ultima Thule is the political, scientific, and spiritual nerve center of the Die Terranauten saga. It is the seat of the terGorden Dynasty, the site of the Yggdrasil Project, and the stage for some of the saga's most consequential events: the birth and death of Myriam, the abdication of Growan terGorden, the pogrom against the Drivers, the activation of the Omega Program, and ultimately the ecological transformation that ends the age of corporate tyranny.

Across the saga's 99 booklets, Ultima Thule appears or is referenced in at least 16 episodes, serving as a setting for events spanning from the city's founding by Major Gorden through its final transformation into a living jungle in 2504 AD.

Geography and Physical Description

Ultima Thule is situated in Greenland, on the edge of the Holy Valley of Odrodir where Yggdrasil grows. The city is built around and atop a system of three large lakes, including the Bodn-Trichter, upon which portions of the city float. At its center lies Palace Island, the site of Growan terGorden's Palace and the Biotroniks Corporation Headquarters.

History

Founding by Major Gorden

Ultima Thule's origins are revealed in Booklet 073, "The Machines of Ultimate Thule." Major Gorden, an ancestor of David terGorden, experienced a PSI-induced vision of Yggdrasil while lost in space aboard a spaceship. The cosmic tree guided him back to Earth and demanded that he find her physical location on the planet. Major Gorden dedicated his life to this quest, founding the Biotroniks Corporation to fund his search. He eventually discovered Yggdrasil's location in Odrodir, Greenland, though he crashed his glider near the site. His discovery led to the establishment of Ultima Thule as both a city and a corporate headquarters built to protect and exploit the primeval tree.

Major Gorden's son, Tankred terGorden, further developed PSI technology and shielded the Machines of Ultima Thule -- the ancient alien machinery beneath the city that predated human settlement and had been tending Yggdrasil long before humanity arrived.

The Biotroniks Era and the Yggdrasil Project (c. 2475)

Under Growan terGorden, General-Manager of Biotroniks, Ultima Thule became the center of humanity's most consequential scientific endeavor: the Yggdrasil Project. This research initiative studied Yggdrasil and its Mistletoe Blossoms -- the organic material that enabled Drivers to navigate spacecraft through Space II, making interstellar travel possible. Biotroniks held a monopoly on mistletoe production and distribution, making Ultima Thule the single most strategically important location in human civilization.

Around 2475 AD, Growan hired Myriam -- a brilliant biologist and secret Terranaut -- as coordinator of the Yggdrasil Project. She was introduced to Growan by his nephew Mar-Estos (later revealed to be Llewellyn 709). Myriam worked in the research laboratories of Odrodir, where she developed an unprecedented bond with Yggdrasil, eventually injecting herself with a distillate from the tree to deepen her communion with its intelligence (Booklets 030, 031).

During this period, Merlin III -- the ancient Druid awakened by Yggdrasil -- materialized in Odrodir and took up residence in a cave adjacent to the palace complex. He claimed Yggdrasil had sent him to protect Myriam and guide humanity. Merlin requested a tunnel connecting Odrodir to the palace -- a request Growan denied but later fulfilled after Myriam's death (Booklet 030).

Treachery, Marriage, and Tragedy (c. 2475)

The period of the Yggdrasil Project was marked by intense intrigue within Ultima Thule. Clint Gayheen, Growan's security chief and closest confidant, was secretly working for Max von Valdec of the Kaiser Corporation. Gayheen orchestrated the abduction and torture of Myriam, attempting to extract information about her origins and her connection to Yggdrasil. The Terranauts launched a rescue operation in which Algol Kuhn was killed (Booklet 030).

Asen-Ger, a Summacum secretly working as a Terranaut within the Kaiser Corporation, visited Ultima Thule and revealed that the Kaiser Corporation was developing Kaiser Force -- a new energy source to replace the mistletoes entirely. He urged Growan to release the mistletoes for general use, democratizing space travel. Growan refused, a decision that would prove catastrophic for galactic politics (Booklet 030).

Growan proposed marriage to Myriam, and she accepted -- gaining continued access to the Yggdrasil research while positioning the Terranauts closer to power than ever before. The wedding itself was disrupted by a self-proclaimed prophet who accused Myriam of witchcraft, and Shadow was injured by Gray Guards while defending her (Booklet 031).

After the marriage, Myriam found herself increasingly isolated within the palace, cut off from the Drivers by Gayheen's machinations. When Mar-Estos finally exposed Gayheen's treachery -- discovering he had been using Myriam's ID card to access Growan's Council Chamber and communicating directly with Valdec -- Growan authorized Mar-Estos to deal with the traitor. Gayheen was captured and presumably killed. Growan then confronted Valdec in Berlin (Booklet 031).

In the aftermath, Myriam gave birth to David terGorden and died, declaring with her last breath that David was not Growan's son but the child of Yggdrasil, destined to free humanity. Growan rejected the infant. Merlin took the boy and raised him in Odrodir (Booklet 031).

The Years of Solitude (2475-2499)

After Myriam's death, Growan ordered the destruction of the Biotroniks laboratories and retreated into his palace, becoming known as "the Solitary of Ultima Thule." He embedded a series of secrets within the palace itself: recordings of his voice stored in the Central Computer, the Book Myriam encoded into the very structure of the Biotroniks headquarters, and the Omega Program -- the palace's ultimate defense system, designed to destroy Ultima Thule rather than let it fall into enemy hands (Booklets 006, 074).

He also ordered the construction of the tunnel from Merlin's cave to his palace that he had once denied -- a contradictory gesture that symbolized his tortured relationship with the forces of Yggdrasil.

The Great Festival and the Insurrection (2499-2500)

When David terGorden returned to Terra in 2499, Ultima Thule became the center of a political firestorm. Growan's palace was the site of the bitter reunion between father and son. David rejected the Biotroniks Corporation and fled Ultima Thule, seeking Odrodir and Yggdrasil. He was recaptured by Queen Mandorla and her Gray Guards (Booklet 003).

At the Great Festival -- the turn-of-the-century celebration in Ultima Thule -- Growan announced his abdication as General-Manager of Biotroniks and named David as his successor. Max von Valdec then revealed the Kaiser Force and attempted to force David through a lethal energy field. La Strega del Drago detected and disrupted Valdec's Hypnoter control, and David willingly entered the field, disrupting Valdec's plans (Booklet 003).

When the Kaiser Force demonstration was sabotaged, the crowd turned hostile. Valdec blamed the Drivers, inciting a pogrom. He ordered the Gray Guards to take the Drivers into "protective custody" -- a prelude to imprisonment in concentration camps. Llewellyn 709 escaped and issued a secret broadcast warning all Drivers. The Drivers rebelled, leading to violent clashes throughout the city (Booklet 004).

Growan, watching events through his palace's surveillance systems, offered Llewellyn 709 a deal: help the Terranauts in exchange for assistance regaining control of Biotroniks, finding David, and destroying Valdec. Llewellyn agreed. David arrived at the palace to find his father dying. Growan passed on a legacy and the cryptic code "Twelve-twelve-twelve" before dying (Booklet 004).

David, Lithe, Llewellyn 709, and Flint escaped the besieged palace with the help of Merlin III and Norwy van Dyne, fleeing Earth aboard a Razzo (Booklet 004).

The Omega Program and the Freezing of the City (January 2500)

After the Drivers' desperate crash-landing in Greenland and Merlin's sacrificial death defending them with the PSI-ghosts of King Arthur's Round Table, David was guided by Merlin's recorded video message to the ancient defense installations beneath the palace. With the help of Brak Shakram and the Nomans living in the palace's bunkers, David found the hidden computer controlling the defense systems and activated the Omega Program (Booklet 006).

The Omega Program triggered volcanic eruptions across Greenland, destroyed the attacking Gray Guards, and flooded Ultima Thule. The defense program tapped into Space II itself, revealing the depth of the terGorden family's understanding of the technologies they controlled. The city was subsequently frozen by the defense system, becoming an ice-locked ruin -- a state Valdec recognized as Growan's ultimate safeguard (Booklets 006, 007).

After the flooding and freezing, Ultima Thule lay abandoned. Valdec, observing the aftermath from a Ringo spacecraft, realized the city's defenses still operated -- a warning shot from a hidden laser emplacement drove him away. He described the frozen city as evidence that "Growan had a defense program tapping into Space II" (Booklet 007).

Time-Displaced Exploration (2597 / December 2499)

In Booklet 025, David terGorden and Helena Koraischowa (the civilian identity of Chan de Nouille) traveled to Ultima Thule to investigate inexplicable phenomena near the frozen Holy Valley. They were transported into a time-displaced semi-reality -- an alternate 2597 Earth devastated by Space II energy -- where an aged Asen-Ger revealed the catastrophic potential of the Kaiser Force. David and Helena were eventually returned to Ultima Thule in their own timeline (Booklets 025, 026).

Thawing and the Machines of Ultima Thule (2501)

In 2501, David returned to Ultima Thule with Narda, Nayala, Mandorla, and Asen-Ger to investigate his family's legacy. Captain Gerna, sent by Chan de Nouille, brought Carsen, a Noman prisoner from the Luna Dungeons who knew the layout of the underground complex beneath the city (Booklet 073).

The group entered the ice-covered city and descended into the underground bunker complex, where they encountered a powerful PSI Field generated by the Machines of Ultima Thule (MUT) -- ancient alien technology that had been tending and protecting Yggdrasil since long before human settlement. The machines communicated telepathically, revealing their history and their connection to Yggdrasil. They showed David a vision of Major Gorden's past, revealing how his ancestor had first been called by Yggdrasil and had founded Biotroniks and the city itself. The MUT agreed to thaw Ultima Thule and assist David in his search for the Book Myriam (Booklet 073).

The Search for the Book Myriam (2503)

David returned again in 2503, this time claiming his corporate inheritance and exploring the de-iced, abandoned Biotroniks Corporation Headquarters. The Central Computer was partially reactivated, revealing recordings of Growan terGorden speaking of the Book Myriam being encoded in the palace's structure. Carsen helped retrieve the code, but the building plans were missing (Booklet 074).

David and Asen-Ger ventured into the Primeval Palace -- the original Biotroniks headquarters beneath the current building -- where all memories were stored, including the corrected version of the corporation's founding. However, they were captured by robots. Captain Gerna, influenced by the MUT and acting on orders from Chan de Nouille, contacted the Gray Guards, who "rescued" David but destroyed the Primeval Palace's Central Computer, erasing the Book Myriam's secrets forever. The MUT promised to continue protecting Ultima Thule and Yggdrasil (Booklet 074).

The War of the Castes and the Time-Distorting Technology (2503-2504)

During the civil conflict of 2503-2504, technology derived from Ultima Thule played a role in the fighting. In Booklet 079, Warlord Gambelher and traitorous Gray Guard Queens used time-distorting technology from Ultima Thule to attack the Council administration in Geneva, indicating that the MUT's capabilities had been partially weaponized by outside forces.

Political prisoners, including Manuel Lucci, were freed from the Dead Spaces under Berlin by Bolter's Hausfreund via a Space-Time Stroboscope and transported to Ultima Thule, which served as a rallying point for the resistance (Booklet 099).

Ecological Transformation and the New Era (2504)

In the saga's final booklet, Ultima Thule underwent its most dramatic transformation. Cosmic Spores released by Bolter's Hausfreund -- part of David terGorden's plan to transform Earth into a green planet -- caused the city to transform into a jungle. Kaiser Guard armored gliders attacked, but were destroyed by a protective shield around the city (Booklet 099).

David arrived in the transformed Ultima Thule and made his historic announcement: the death of Valdec, the end of corporate rule, and the beginning of a new era of bio-technology. He called all Drivers to come to Earth. The Drivers formed a Lodge and sent a PSI-call across the galaxy. David then departed on an Organ-Sailer to eliminate the threat of Kaiser Force forever (Booklet 099).

The Yggdrasil Project

The Yggdrasil Project was the research initiative centered at Ultima Thule that studied Yggdrasil and its Mistletoe Blossoms. Under Growan terGorden's authority and Myriam's scientific leadership, the project sought to understand the biological and PSI properties of the mistletoes that made interstellar Driver space travel possible.

The project operated primarily in the research laboratories of Odrodir, the Holy Valley adjacent to Ultima Thule where Yggdrasil grew. Key aspects of the research included:

  • Mistletoe cultivation and distribution: The harvesting of mistletoe blossoms from Yggdrasil for use by Drivers
  • PSI-enhancement research: Experiments to enhance Driver abilities, including Hados's lethal substance experiments (thwarted by Merlin, Booklet 031)
  • Yggdrasil communion: Myriam's pioneering work on direct biological and PSI contact with the tree, including self-injection with Yggdrasil distillate
  • Biotroniks research: The broader bio-electronic research that gave the corporation its name

The project was ultimately abandoned by Growan after Myriam's death, when he ordered the destruction of the laboratories. However, the knowledge generated during the project -- particularly Myriam's findings, encoded as the Book Myriam -- became one of the saga's most sought-after treasures.

The Machines of Ultima Thule (MUT)

The Machines of Ultima Thule, abbreviated as MUT, are ancient alien technology buried beneath the city. They predate human settlement by an unknown span of time and were originally tasked with tending and protecting Yggdrasil. Key characteristics:

  • PSI Field generation: The MUT generate powerful telepathic fields affecting all PSI-sensitive individuals in the vicinity
  • Environmental control: They are responsible for the city's glaciation and thawing, and can manipulate the local environment
  • Telepathic communication: The MUT can communicate directly with PSI-gifted humans, revealing visions of the past and transmitting knowledge
  • Protective function: They serve as guardians of Yggdrasil, though their capabilities are limited by their damaged state
  • Historical records: The MUT contain records of their own history and their connection to the network of World Trees across the galaxy

The MUT were first discovered by Major Gorden and later shielded by his son Tankred terGorden. In 2501, they revealed their history to David terGorden and agreed to thaw Ultima Thule and assist in the search for the Book Myriam (Booklet 073). In 2503, they promised to continue protecting Ultima Thule and Yggdrasil after the destruction of the Primeval Palace's computer (Booklet 074).

The Omega Program

The Omega Program is the ultimate defense system of Ultima Thule, programmed by Growan terGorden to destroy the city rather than let it fall into enemy hands. When activated by David terGorden in January 2500, it triggered:

  1. Volcanic eruptions across Greenland, destroying the attacking Gray Guards
  2. Flooding of Ultima Thule
  3. Connection to Space II, tapping into overdimensional energy to generate the freezing effect that encased the city in ice

The Omega Program demonstrated that the terGorden family possessed a deeper understanding of Space II technology than the rest of human civilization -- knowledge likely derived from the MUT beneath the city (Booklets 006, 007).

Neu-Thule: The Colony on Sarym

The name "Thule" echoes beyond Earth. On Sarym, the Drivers established Neu-Thule (New Thule) as a settlement and the seat of the Driver Council. The naming reflects the profound cultural significance of the original Ultima Thule to the Driver community -- as the place where Yggdrasil grows, it is the spiritual homeland of every Driver, and its colonial namesake carries that heritage to the stars.

Significance and Themes

Fortress and Prison

Ultima Thule embodies the paradox of power as imprisonment. Growan terGorden built it into a fortress with surveillance systems, hidden defenses, and the Omega Program -- and then lived and died alone within it, unable to connect with the people closest to him. The palace's walls, designed to keep enemies out, also trapped its builder in solitude. When David inherits the palace, he too must confront the tension between the protection it offers and the isolation it imposes.

Nature Enclosed by Technology

The city is built atop and around the Holy Valley where Yggdrasil grows -- organic life enclosed by corporate infrastructure, a living cosmic tree hemmed in by surveillance technology and Gray Guards. The entire arc of Ultima Thule's history can be read as the struggle between these two forces: the natural, PSI-based power of Yggdrasil and the technological, corporate power of Biotroniks. The saga's conclusion -- the transformation of the city into a jungle by Cosmic Spores -- resolves this tension decisively in favor of nature.

Legacy Encoded in Architecture

Growan's decision to encode the Book Myriam into the very structure of the Biotroniks headquarters makes Ultima Thule itself a repository of prophecy and knowledge. The palace is not merely a building but a message -- a father's final communication to a son he could never reach in life, written in architecture because he could not write it in words. The destruction of the Primeval Palace's computer by the Gray Guards is thus not merely vandalism but the erasure of sacred knowledge, the loss of a text that was simultaneously a building.

From Corporate Capital to Revolutionary Cradle

Ultima Thule's trajectory mirrors the saga's larger political arc: from the seat of corporate monopoly power (Biotroniks under Growan) to the site of revolution (the Driver uprising of 2500) to abandoned ruin (the frozen city) to reborn haven (the jungle-transformed city of 2504). In the end, the place where the mistletoe monopoly was enforced becomes the place where David announces the end of corporate rule and the dawn of a new era of bio-technology.
