"An explosion rocks the Council administration. Gambelher and traitorous Queens, using time-distorting technology from Ultima Thule, attack."
-- Booklet 079, "Dying for Terra"
Geneva (German: Genf), situated on the shores of Lake Geneva in central Europe, is the political capital of the Council of Corporations and the administrative heart of the Terran Star Empire throughout the events of Die Terranauten. As the seat of the Council Assembly, the headquarters of the Lord Inspection, and the location of the Gray Guards' diplomatic embassy, Geneva functions as the nerve center of corporate governance -- the place where the laws of the Star Empire are debated, where financial audits are conducted, and where the fate of hundreds of colonized worlds is decided in the boardrooms of the GeneralManags.
Over the course of the saga, Geneva is the setting for some of the most consequential political events of the 26th century: the alien Gorthaur's infiltration of Earth's computer network, the investigation and fall of Max von Valdec, the machinations of the War of the Castes, and the climactic Battle of Geneva in which the Council administration is destroyed, Ignazius Tyll and Sarneyke Eloise are killed, and David terGorden and Manuel Lucci announce the dissolution of the Council and the transfer of corporate assets to worker control. Geneva is where the old order dies.
Geography
Geneva is a city on Earth, located on the shores of Lake Geneva (Genfer See) in what was historically Switzerland. By the 26th century, the city has expanded into a major administrative metropolis, though it is dwarfed in industrial and military importance by Berlin (the headquarters of the Kaiser Corporation) and Ultima Thule (the seat of the Biotroniks Corporation). Geneva's significance is political rather than industrial -- it is a city of bureaucrats, diplomats, auditors, and corporate functionaries rather than soldiers or scientists.
The outskirts of the city include a Distribution Station where food and supplies are managed, and the nearby settlement of Koweil is located on the lake's shore.
Political Significance
Seat of the Council of Corporations
Geneva serves as the permanent headquarters of the Council of Corporations (Konzil der Konzerne), the supreme governing body of the Terran Star Empire. The Geneva Council Headquarters (Genfer Konzilzentrale) is the building where the Council Assembly convenes -- the corporate parliament in which the GeneralManags of Earth's most powerful interstellar corporations debate policy, authorize military action, elect the Lord Colonel, and wage their factional wars of influence and assassination.
Sessions of the Council Assembly are held in this building, though emergency assemblies may be called at other locations. The Council Headquarters contains the chambers of the Lord Colonel, the offices of the Council administration, and the communication infrastructure that links Geneva to the colonial worlds of the Star Empire. It is from this building that the political affairs of hundreds of star systems are directed.
After the dissolution of the Council at the end of the War of the Castes, the building transitions to house the Reconstruction Committee (Wiederaufbau-Gremium), the governing body tasked with rebuilding Earth's shattered institutions under the leadership of Manuel Lucci and other representatives of the post-war order.
The Lord Inspection
The Lord Inspection maintains its headquarters in Geneva. This internal oversight body of the Council, headed by the Lord Inspector, investigates financial irregularities, corruption, and unauthorized activities among the corporations. Ignazius Tyll serves as Lord Inspector from this Geneva office, conducting the dangerous audit of the Kaiser Corporation's finances that makes him a target for assassination by Max von Valdec. The Lord Inspection headquarters contains a secret tunnel that Tyll uses to escape when Valdec declares his second state of emergency -- though the tunnel is compromised, and Tyll survives only thanks to the intervention of the Brak Shakram Command (Booklet 054).
Geneva Garden Embassy
The Geneva Garden Embassy (Genfer Garden-Gesandtschaft) is the diplomatic installation of the Gray Guards in Geneva. The embassy represents the Cosmorality's interests at the seat of the Council and serves as a point of contact between the Guard command structure and the civilian government. In Booklet 054, Queen Anafee, Chan de Nouille's envoy on Earth, takes Llewellyn 709, Narda, and Asen-Ger into custody at the Geneva installation and escorts them to a Ringo bound for Lunaport, defying Valdec's demand for their extradition.
The embassy is noted as having been attacked at some point during the saga's events.
ASK Headquarters
The ASK-Headquarters (ASK-Zentrale), the administrative center of the Allwelten-Stahl-Konsortium, is located in Geneva. It is from this building that Anlyka terCrupp directs her corporate empire and plots against both Max von Valdec and Ignazius Tyll. During the Gorthaur crisis, the alien retreats to the ASK headquarters after his failed assassination attempt on Valdec in New Berlin, and it is here that the Terranauts ultimately confront and defeat him (Booklet 053).
Other Institutions
- Geneva City Administration (Genfer Stadtverwaltung) -- The local municipal government of Geneva.
- Interstellar Post in Geneva (Interstellar-Post in Genf) -- The interstellar postal service, noted for its concern over Max von Valdec's unauthorized use of courier ships.
- General Registry -- A bureaucratic institution for the registration and classification of citizens within the caste system, with a branch in Geneva (Booklet 072).
- Bolter's Hausfreund -- A sentient computer with a personality program and a mistletoe, located somewhere in Geneva. David terGorden discovers it during the alien attack on Earth and uses its mistletoe to focus his PSI powers against the alien ship in orbit (Booklet 050). Bolter's Hausfreund later plays a critical role in the saga's conclusion, freeing prisoners from the Dead Spaces via a Space-Time Stroboscope (Booklet 099).
History
Administrative Capital of the Star Empire (Pre-2499)
Geneva's role as the political capital of the Terran Star Empire predates the saga's events. By the time the story opens in 2499, the Council of Corporations has long governed from Geneva, presiding over a rigid caste system that stratifies humanity into GeneralManags, Arbiters, Relax, Nomans, and Drivers. While Berlin serves as the power base of Max von Valdec and the Kaiser Corporation, Geneva remains the formal seat of government -- the place where the Council Assembly meets and the Lord Colonel's authority is legitimated. This distinction between Berlin (the seat of military-corporate power) and Geneva (the seat of institutional governance) runs throughout the saga.
The city is also associated with interstellar policy through the Geneva Agreement (Genfer Abkommen), an interstellar diplomatic accord, and the Geneva Colonization Program (Genfer Kolonialisierungsprogramm), which led to the settlement of the Tordrig system.
The Investigation of Valdec (2500--2502)
Ignazius Tyll, operating from the Lord Inspection headquarters in Geneva, conducts a meticulous investigation into the Kaiser Corporation's finances. This audit -- one of the few institutional checks still functioning under Valdec's dictatorial rule -- threatens to expose the full extent of Valdec's financial corruption. When Valdec learns of the investigation's progress, he orders Fay Gray to assassinate Tyll and frame Anlyka terCrupp for the killing. Despite multiple assassination attempts, Tyll survives (Booklet 053). His modest resources -- he travels by Council Glider rather than corporate fleet -- underscore the Lord Inspection's institutional weakness relative to the corporate empires it is meant to police. The Gorthaur Crisis (January 2502)
Geneva becomes a major theatre of conflict during the alien crisis of 2502. Gorthaur, a survivor of the planet Xaxon which was destroyed by Kaiser Force side effects, infiltrates Earth seeking revenge against humanity. He travels to Geneva and takes control of Anlyka terCrupp's body and several other ASK managers at the corporation's Geneva headquarters. Operating through terCrupp's body, Gorthaur manipulates Earth's computer network from Geneva, causing widespread chaos -- downgrading millions of Relax to Noman status and destabilizing the planetary infrastructure (Booklet 053).
After a failed assassination attempt on Valdec in New Berlin, Gorthaur retreats to the ASK headquarters in Geneva, where the Terranauts -- Narda, Llewellyn 709, and Asen-Ger -- confront him. In a moment of realization, Gorthaur recognizes his mistake in condemning all humans and, using the Arma, sacrifices himself in Geneva to atone for his actions and prevent further harm (Booklet 053).
The Alien Attack and David's Discovery (December 2501)
During the alien attack that transforms Berlin into a swamp-like alien landscape, David terGorden flees to Geneva, where he discovers Bolter's Hausfreund -- a sentient computer with a mistletoe growing from it. Using the mistletoe to amplify his PSI powers, David projects his consciousness to the alien ship in orbit and influences Queen Yazmin to activate the ship's self-destruct system. The alien threat is neutralized, and Earth returns to normal. In the aftermath, the Council, meeting in Geneva, agrees to abolish Kaiser Force and cooperate with the Terranauts (Booklet 050).
Valdec's Fall and Tyll's Escape (2502)
When Valdec dissolves the Council for the second time and declares absolute emergency rule, Geneva becomes a dangerous place for his opponents. Tyll, warned by his secretary Lorn, escapes the Lord Inspection headquarters using a secret tunnel. An Electric Fly agent from the Brak Shakram Command intercepts him, revealing that Valdec knew of the tunnel and had rigged it. Manuel Lucci arrives and escorts Tyll to safety in the Urals.
Meanwhile, at the Geneva Guard installation, Queen Anafee takes Llewellyn 709, Narda, and Asen-Ger into protective custody and, defying Valdec's orders, escorts them to Lunaport aboard a Ringo. Geneva thus serves as both a trap and an escape route during the coup (Booklet 054).
After Valdec's flight from Earth, Ignazius Tyll is appointed interim Lord Colonel and governs from Geneva. His administration struggles to contain corporate violence, food shortages, and the growing unrest that will eventually erupt into the War of the Castes (Booklets 054, 072).
The War of the Castes: Geneva Under Siege (September--November 2503)
Geneva becomes the epicenter of the saga's climactic political crisis. As the War of the Castes erupts across Earth -- with uprisings in Kilimanjaro, the Ruins of New Delhi, and strikes in Moscow and Turin -- the Council administration in Geneva becomes both the target of corporate conspiracies and the last remaining institutional authority on the planet.
Key events in Geneva during the War of the Castes:
- David terGorden, now a GeneralManag and Special Envoy, operates from Geneva in his attempts to mediate between the Council and the insurgent groups (Booklet 076).
- The Council Assembly meets in Geneva, where Anlyka terCrupp and her allies engineer the removal of Ignazius Tyll from power and David terGorden is unexpectedly elected Lord Colonel (Booklet 076).
- Narda and Nayala investigate food supply manipulations from a Distribution Station on the outskirts of Geneva, tracing them back to Marya Briden (Booklet 072).
- Anlyka terCrupp, from her bunker in the Urals, plans a nuclear strike on Geneva to destroy the Council administration and everyone in it, rather than accept the dissolution of corporate power. Her SD agent Frig is tasked with launching the nuclear missile, though the strike is ultimately prevented (Booklet 079).
- David and Chan de Nouille return to Earth and order the Geneva Guard Garrison to act against corporate murder squads operating across the city (Booklet 079).
- Ludomir Chelskij of Terrestrial Chemical meets David in Geneva and offers cooperation on behalf of corporations not involved in the violence (Booklet 079).
The Battle of Geneva (October/November 2503)
The Battle of Geneva is the climactic military engagement of the War of the Castes and one of the most consequential events in the entire saga. It unfolds at the Council administration building:
- The Terranaut delegation, led by Llewellyn 709, arrives in Geneva. Llewellyn accuses David terGorden of being Chan de Nouille's puppet, creating a tense standoff among would-be allies.
- An explosion rocks the Council administration building. Warlord Gambelher, a traitorous Gray Guard commander secretly allied with Anlyka terCrupp and the Allwelten-Stahl-Konsortium, launches an attack using time-distorting technology obtained from Ultima Thule. The Time Fields warp reality around the battlefield.
- David terGorden, aided by Llewellyn 709, Sarneyke Eloise, and Ignazius Tyll, fights back against Gambelher's forces.
- Ignazius Tyll -- the former Lord Inspector, interim Lord Colonel, and the honest bureaucrat who had tried to hold the system together -- is killed in the fighting. He dies in the building from which he had governed, in the city where he had spent his career.
- Sarneyke Eloise -- the trade union leader who had worked for peace throughout the crisis -- is killed alongside Tyll. Their deaths eliminate both the institutional and labor leadership of the transitional government.
- Gambelher is killed by a VIP Glider, ending the military coup attempt.
- Manuel Lucci arrives at the devastated Council administration and mourns the dead.
The End of the Old Order
In the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Geneva, David terGorden and Manuel Lucci address the world from the ruined city, announcing:
- The end of the War of the Castes.
- The dissolution of the Council of Corporations.
- The transfer of corporate assets to worker control.
David, urged by Bolter's Hausfreund, resigns as Lord Colonel and departs Earth for Sarym. The Council administration in Geneva transitions to the Reconstruction Committee, with Manuel Lucci serving as a key member of the new governing body (Booklet 079).
Post-War Geneva and Valdec's Return (2503--2504)
Under the Reconstruction Committee, Geneva continues to serve as Earth's administrative capital. Manuel Lucci mediates labor disputes from the city, including the conflict between Hogberg of Agrospace and the Arbiter union led by Li Shu. Ignazius Tyll (whose survival of the Geneva explosion remains a narrative discrepancy) serves as WAG Inspector under the Committee.
When Max von Valdec returns to conquer Earth through clone infiltration and a surprise military strike, the Reconstruction Committee's authority collapses. Valdec's forces seize control, and the political center shifts back to Berlin, where Valdec declares the Second Reich of Humanity and rules as dictator (Booklet 085).

Significance in the Saga
The Seat of Institutional Power
Geneva represents institutional governance in Die Terranauten -- the formal, bureaucratic exercise of authority as distinct from the raw military power wielded from Berlin or the cosmic significance of Ultima Thule. Where Berlin is the seat of the Kaiser Corporation's industrial-military complex and Ultima Thule is the sacred ground of Yggdrasil, Geneva is the city of auditors, council sessions, and diplomatic protocols. This distinction makes Geneva the natural home of Ignazius Tyll, the saga's embodiment of institutional integrity within a corrupt system.
The Contrast with Berlin
Throughout the saga, Geneva and Berlin function as contrasting poles of Terran political life. Berlin is the power base of Max von Valdec and the Kaiser Corporation -- a city of military force, industrial might, and personal tyranny. Geneva is the administrative capital -- a city of councils, inspections, and corporate diplomacy. Valdec rules from Berlin; the Council Assembly meets in Geneva. The tension between these two cities reflects the tension between personal dictatorship and institutional governance that runs through the entire saga. Significantly, when Valdec returns to power in the Second Reich, the political center shifts decisively to Berlin, and Geneva's role diminishes.
A City Destroyed and Reborn
The Battle of Geneva is the moment where the old political order literally collapses. The explosion at the Council administration, the deaths of Tyll and Eloise, and the subsequent declaration by David and Lucci mark the end of five centuries of corporate rule. That this announcement is made from the ruins of the Council building -- the very institution being abolished -- gives the scene its symbolic weight. Geneva is where the Council of Corporations was born, and Geneva is where it dies.
Nuclear Target
Anlyka terCrupp's plan to launch a nuclear strike on Geneva represents the ultimate expression of corporate nihilism: if the corporations cannot control the Council, then the Council -- and the city that houses it -- will be destroyed. That this plan mirrors Max von Valdec's own threat to destroy Earth's cities with nuclear weapons during his escape (Booklet 054) underscores the saga's argument that the corporate elite, when cornered, will destroy the very institutions they claim to serve rather than surrender power.Key Locations Within Geneva
