Manuel Lucci (German: Manuell Lucci) is the coordinator of Commando Brak Shakram, the paramilitary arm of the F.F.D.E. resistance coalition, and a member of the Joint Council of the F.F.D.E.. A political organizer, labor negotiator, and guerrilla leader, Lucci is the driving human force behind Earth's popular uprising against corporate tyranny in the years 2502--2504. Where David terGorden embodies the cosmic dimension of the struggle against the Council of Corporations and Llewellyn 709 its psionic dimension, Lucci represents its political and working-class foundation -- the voice of the Nomans, Relax, Arbiters, and ordinary people who lack PSI powers or corporate wealth but whose courage and solidarity ultimately break the corporate oligarchy.

Biography

Early Resistance and the Brak Shakram Command (Pre-2502)

Manuel Lucci first appears as the Coordinator of the Brak Shakram Command -- a militant underground organization named after the legendary Noman leader Brak Shakram, who was killed during the Oxyd crisis (Booklet 021). By 2502, the Commando is one of several resistance groups operating in Earth's underground, causing unrest and working in loose concert with the Terranauts against the Council of Corporations and the Gray Guards. During this period, Lucci coordinates the Brak Shakram's activities from various clandestine locations, establishing the network of cells, safe houses, and operatives that will later form the backbone of the F.F.D.E. (Booklet 053).

The Brak Shakram Command is described as a "trade union movement" with paramilitary capabilities -- an organization that blends labor organizing with armed resistance. Lucci's role as coordinator places him at the intersection of these two functions: planning strikes, directing intelligence operations, and providing armed escort and security for the broader resistance movement.

The Fall of Valdec and the Demand for Recognition (2502)

When Max von Valdec dissolves the Council of Corporations and declares a state of emergency, the resulting chaos creates both danger and opportunity for the resistance. Ignazius Tyll, the Lord Inspector who had been investigating Valdec's financial corruption, becomes a hunted man. It is Lucci and the Brak Shakram Command who rescue him.

An Electric Fly agent of the Command contacts Tyll during his escape from the Lord Inspection headquarters in Geneva, warning him that Valdec has rigged the secret tunnel he is using. Lucci personally escorts Tyll to a secret base in the Urals, where opposition Council members -- Anlyka terCrupp, Wilbert terBarden, and Timian Mira -- have gathered to plot Valdec's overthrow (Booklet 054).

After Chan de Nouille broadcasts evidence of Valdec's illegal deconditioning of the Gray Guards and strikes erupt across Earth, Valdec flees into Space II. Tyll is appointed interim Lord Colonel. In the new political landscape, Lucci demands formal recognition for the rebel groups from the newly installed government -- a pivotal moment marking the transition of the resistance from a purely underground movement to a political force demanding a seat at the table (Booklet 054).

The Joint Council and the Road to War (2503)

By 2503, Lucci operates as both Coordinator of Commando Brak Shakram and a member of the Joint Council of the F.F.D.E., the supreme deliberative body of the umbrella resistance coalition. The F.F.D.E. has crystallized as a formal alliance, uniting the Brak Shakram Command, the Anarcho-Syndicate, the Action Committee Free Africa, the trade unions under Sarneyke Eloise, and other opposition groups in a common front against the corporations.

During this period, Tyll's government proves unable to contain the escalating corporate violence and caste oppression. The GeneralManags -- Marya Briden, Hendrik dalghson, Shamir Zhymer -- plot to seize control of the Council. Food supplies are manipulated. Citizens are demoted from Relax to Noman status. Lucci coordinates with trade union leader Sarneyke Eloise and other opposition figures, building the coalition that will soon erupt into open revolt (Booklet 072).

The War of the Castes (September--November 2503)

The War of the Castes erupts in September 2503, with simultaneous uprisings in Kilimanjaro and the Ruins of New Delhi. David terGorden, now a GeneralManag and Special Envoy of the Council, attempts to mediate between the Council and the insurgent groups. Lucci is central to these negotiations, representing the F.F.D.E. coalition alongside Sarneyke Eloise and Philip Moran of the Anarcho-Syndicate.

During the negotiations, an assassination attempt is made on Lucci -- orchestrated by Anlyka terCrupp and the hardline GeneralManags specifically to sabotage David's mediation efforts and prevent any accommodation between the Council and the resistance. The attempt fails, but it deepens the crisis and demonstrates the corporate elite's willingness to murder their way out of reform (Booklet 076).

The war intensifies through October. In Moscow, Lucci witnesses corporate violence firsthand -- murder squads operating openly against workers and union organizers. He plans a general strike and an attack on V/O Kulturaimport, aided by a sentient glider that reveals its master is David terGorden. In Turin, F.F.D.E. forces fight against IWF corporate security. Ishtan Orzlav, the F.F.D.E.'s Moscow liaison, assists Lucci in coordinating these operations (Booklet 079).

When David and Chan return to Earth, a final cataclysm unfolds at the Council administration in Geneva. The traitor Warlord Gambelher, allied with ASK, attacks using time-distorting technology from Ultima Thule, killing both Ignazius Tyll and Sarneyke Eloise. Lucci arrives at the scene and mourns the dead -- the bureaucrat who had once governed from this building and the union leader who had been his closest political ally, both cut down in the violence they had worked to prevent.

In the aftermath, David and Lucci address the world together, announcing the end of the War of the Castes, the dissolution of the Council of Corporations, and the transfer of corporate assets to worker control. Chan de Nouille pledges the Gray Guards' service to the people. David resigns as Lord Colonel and departs Earth. At the monument erected for Sarneyke Eloise, Lucci vows to continue the fight for freedom -- understanding that the end of the war is the beginning, not the end, of the struggle to build a just society (Booklet 079).

The Reconstruction Committee (2503--2504)

After the dissolution of the Council, Lucci becomes a member of the Reconstruction Committee (Wiederaufbau-Gremium) in Geneva, the governing body tasked with rebuilding Earth's shattered institutions. In this role, he is no longer purely a revolutionary but a statesman -- mediating between the competing interests of the post-war order.

His work on the Committee is unglamorous but vital. When a labor dispute erupts between Hogberg, General Manager of Agrospace, and the Arbiter union led by Li Shu, Lucci mediates. Hogberg refuses to meet the workers' demands, threatening a strike that would deepen the existing food crisis. Lucci navigates between the management's intransigence and the union's desperation, trying to hold the fragile post-war consensus together. It is the work of practical governance -- the kind of work that heroes in space operas rarely perform, but without which revolutions fail (Booklet 085).

He is protected during this period by a personal bodyguard detail from Commando Brak Shakram, including Torstein, Di Miran, and Karyn Olsh -- a sign that even in peacetime, the F.F.D.E.'s leadership remains under constant threat.

Valdec's Return and the Fall (2504)

The fragile peace is shattered when Max von Valdec launches his reconquest of Earth. Using infiltrated Clone agents, the Cold Rot virus as cover, and a surprise military strike, Valdec seizes power and declares the Second Reich of Humanity.

Lucci is summoned to Lunaport by Chan de Nouille, who reveals that Valdec's agents have infiltrated Earth, carrying a nuclear bomb. Chan requests increased security measures, but Lucci is hesitant due to longstanding mistrust of the Guards -- a tension rooted in the decades of Gray Guard oppression that preceded their temporary alliance. Before the security measures can be implemented, Valdec's forces strike. Lunaport falls. Lucci and Chan are forced underground (Booklet 085).

Valdec's regime systematically hunts down the F.F.D.E. leadership. Zen Torstein is captured in Perth. Ignazius Tyll is captured in Manhattan. Christin Dorf is captured in Wolfsburg. In Edinburgh, F.F.D.E. rebels put up fierce resistance, using the anti-hypnotic drug Londrium B to resist the PSI control of Valdec's Super-Drivers.

Lucci and Chan hide on Atlantica, an artificial island between Europe and North America controlled by the criminal Kardelein, a Driver who runs the drug trade there. But Kardelein, motivated by greed, betrays them to Queen Lea -- a genetically engineered "Killer-Queen" dispatched by Valdec -- in exchange for money. Queen Lea confronts them on Atlantica. Chan de Nouille is killed. Manuel Lucci is captured. Lea then murders Kardelein to eliminate loose ends (Booklet 086).

With its coordinator in chains, its key leaders imprisoned or dead, and its most powerful military ally killed, the F.F.D.E. is effectively decapitated. Lucci is imprisoned in the Dead Spaces -- the high-security underground prison complex beneath Berlin -- alongside other political prisoners including Asen-Ger, Christin Dorf, and Ignazius Tyll.

Liberation: The Eco-Shock (2504)

In the saga's final booklet, Zarkophin and Cant discuss executing the imprisoned F.F.D.E. leaders and launching a preemptive strike against rebel planets using Kaiser Force technology. Before the execution can be carried out, Bolter's Hausfreund -- a psiotronic entity connected to Yggdrasil -- opens a Space-Time Stroboscope in the Dead Spaces and frees Lucci and the other political prisoners, transporting them to Ultima Thule in Greenland.

In Ultima Thule, Lucci witnesses extraordinary events: the city transforms into a jungle as Cosmic Spores -- genetically engineered organisms released by David terGorden's plan -- blanket Earth. Kaiser Guard armored gliders attack the city but are destroyed by a protective shield. Claude Farrell arrives via Space-Time Stroboscope.

Then David terGorden himself arrives and announces the death of Valdec, the end of corporate rule, and the dawn of a new era of bio-technology. The Jin spores neutralize the Kaiser Guards by restoring their suppressed humanity. Earth is being reborn.

For Lucci -- the man who organized strikes in Moscow, negotiated with David in the Urals, survived assassination in the War of the Castes, led the Reconstruction Committee, was betrayed on Atlantica, and endured imprisonment in the Dead Spaces -- this moment is the vindication of everything the F.F.D.E. fought for. David terGorden

Ignazius Tyll

The bureaucrat and the revolutionary share a complex bond. Lucci saves Tyll's life during Valdec's coup, escorting him to safety in the Urals, then immediately demands political concessions from him. Their relationship embodies the tension between institutional governance and radical change -- Tyll seeking to reform the system from within, Lucci seeking to overturn it. Both are ultimately destroyed by the same forces: Tyll is killed in the Battle of Geneva (Booklet 079), and Lucci is later captured and imprisoned by Valdec's regime. In the saga's final act, both are freed from the Dead Spaces beneath Berlin -- though whether Tyll survived the Geneva explosion or this represents a continuity variance is unresolved.

Chan de Nouille

The Great Gray and the resistance coordinator represent an alliance of necessity -- the military power of the Gray Guards and the popular legitimacy of the F.F.D.E. Their relationship is marked by mutual distrust rooted in the Guards' history as enforcers of corporate tyranny. When Chan warns Lucci about Valdec's infiltration, he is hesitant to grant the Guards expanded security powers (Booklet 085). Yet when Valdec strikes, they become fugitive allies, hiding together on Atlantica. Sarneyke Eloise

The trade union leader is Lucci's closest political ally within the F.F.D.E. coalition, representing organized labor to his paramilitary resistance. Her death in the Battle of Geneva (Booklet 079) is a personal blow that Lucci mourns publicly. Max von Valdec

Valdec is Lucci's ultimate antagonist -- the corporate tyrant whose regime the F.F.D.E. was founded to oppose.
