IWF (Interstellar Wood & Furniture)

Interstellar Wood & Furniture, commonly abbreviated as IWF, is one of the major interstellar corporations represented on the Council of Corporations. Specializing in resource extraction and timber operations across colonial worlds, IWF is one of the saga's principal instruments of corporate exploitation -- operating logging and clearing operations on distant planets under the military protection of the Gray Guards, while its leadership plays power politics in the Council chambers on Earth.

History

Colonial Exploitation

IWF's core business model depends on the extraction of natural resources from colonial worlds -- particularly timber -- using convict and forced labor under the protection of the Gray Guards. The corporation's operations reveal the darker side of the Council of Corporations' interstellar reach: worlds that are nominally lumber operations are in fact prison planets where Drivers and other political prisoners are worked to death.

On Veldvald, IWF runs a massive deforestation operation, stripping the planet's forests while keeping the true nature of the world -- a prison planet -- concealed behind a commercial facade. Clearing Squads work for IWF, and the corporation deploys heavy vehicles called Robotraks and MHD Transporters to move timber. The operation is overseen locally by Manag Marsha Tschork, who is described as ruthless and willing to order the extermination of the native Quom population to protect logging profits (Booklet 028).

On Maranyn, the seventh moon of the planet Red Giant in the Tordrig System, IWF maintains a branch office (the IWF-Niederlassung) directed by Tarley LeMaire. The Maranyn branch operates the transport ship Ringo and maintains its own internal security service with armed personnel (Booklet 069).

IWF also maintains a presence at COSMODROM Plato III, a space station in the same region as Maranyn, and at Green Lake City, the center of human settlement on Veldvald.

Council Politics and the Anti-Valdec Opposition

At the highest level, IWF is led by GeneralManag Lucia Takamahi, who holds a seat on the Council of Corporations. Takamahi is part of the opposition faction that forms against Max von Valdec's authoritarian rule, aligning herself with Anlyka terCrupp of ASK, Wilbert terBarden of the Green Hill Corporation, and Timian Mira of the Export-Kartell. This opposition is centered in Geneva and works to curtail Valdec's monopolization of power (Booklet 053).

However, the anti-Valdec opposition is motivated by corporate self-interest rather than principle. When Valdec dissolves the Council and declares a state of emergency, the opposition supports the appointment of Ignazius Tyll as interim Lord Colonel -- a deliberate choice, since Tyll is an honest bureaucrat the GeneralManags believe they can manipulate (Booklet 054).

Internal Rivalry with ASK

Despite their alliance against Valdec, IWF and ASK are rivals. During Tyll's tenure as Lord Colonel (2502--2503), Anlyka terCrupp and Lucia Takamahi come into open conflict over corporate interests. This rivalry is severe enough that Takamahi becomes "targeted for assassination." Her own Security Manag, Ays, is revealed to be a Sleeper agent planted by Valdec -- suggesting the former dictator's reach extends even into IWF's inner circle (Booklet 072).

Lucia Takamahi is ultimately killed by one of Valdec's Sleeper agents. Her younger sister, Ceryl Takamahi, subsequently takes over leadership of Interstellar Wood & Furniture.

The War of the Castes

During the War of the Castes (October--November 2503), IWF's corporate security forces fight directly against the F.F.D.E. resistance movement. In Turin, F.F.D.E. rebels engage in armed conflict with IWF forces, making it one of the key battlegrounds of the civil war on Earth (Booklet 079).

Meanwhile, Anlyka terCrupp of ASK plans to destroy the IWF-Verwaltungsfabrik -- an IWF administrative factory located in Southeast Asia -- as part of the internecine corporate violence that rages even as the broader civil war unfolds. This reflects how the corporations turn on one another during the collapse of the Council system (Booklet 079).

The War of the Castes ends with David terGorden and Manuel Lucci announcing the dissolution of the Council of Corporations and the transfer of corporate assets to worker control. IWF, along with all other Council corporations, ceases to exist as an independent power.

The Bio-Invasion of Maranyn

In a separate but related storyline set in 2502, IWF's Maranyn branch becomes entangled in a biological catastrophe. Branch Director Tarley LeMaire sends the transport ship Ringo to investigate strange occurrences at COSMODROM Plato III. The crew -- Roger Kruschen, Naomi de Lisle, Enrique Rilla, and Consy Reid, all members of IWF's internal security service -- discover the station covered in alien plant mesh. De Lisle is transformed into a stone plate; Rilla and Reid are killed when the infected Ringo crashes on Maranyn, releasing Cosmic Spores that devastate the colony.

LeMaire and the other Manags on Maranyn attempt to seize power from Planetary Commissioner Marina Wristesh, who has declared the planet self-sufficient while lost in Dream-time addiction. Their coup fails, and LeMaire is killed attacking an abandoned Guard base. Maranyn is eventually rescued by the League of Free Worlds with help from the Mirhyry mystic Dihs Reijonen (Booklet 069).

Internal Security Service

IWF maintains its own armed internal security service, staffed with trained operatives who carry out investigations, escort duties, and security operations on behalf of the corporation. Known members include:

Corporate Security Forces (Earth)

On Earth, IWF deploys corporate security forces ("murder squads") that engage in violence against trade unionists and resistance fighters. During the War of the Castes, these forces fight the F.F.D.E. in Turin and other cities.

Equipment and Assets

  • Robotraks -- Heavy vehicles used for logging and clearing operations on colonial worlds.
  • MHD Transporters -- Vehicles used to transport timber.
  • Ringo -- A small transport ship operated by the Maranyn branch.
  • Clearing Squads -- Work crews tasked with land clearing on colonial worlds.
  • IWF-Verwaltungsfabrik -- An administrative factory in Southeast Asia on Earth.

Political Connections

IWF is embedded in a web of corporate alliances and rivalries within the Council of Corporations:

  • Allwelten-Stahl-Konsortium (ASK) -- Nominal ally in the anti-Valdec opposition, but a bitter rival. terCrupp targets IWF infrastructure for destruction during the War of the Castes.
  • Export-Kartell -- Allied corporation in the opposition faction.
  • Green Hill Corporation -- Allied corporation in the opposition faction.
  • Kaiser Corporation -- Valdec's personal corporation and IWF's ultimate enemy within the Council.
  • Cosmoral Oolga -- The Gray Guard political observer on Luna is noted to have connections to IWF, among other corporations.
  • Gray Guards -- IWF's colonial operations depend on Guard military protection; the Guards enforce IWF's control on worlds like Veldvald.

Significance

IWF exemplifies the exploitative nature of the Council of Corporations system. While it may appear to be a simple timber and furniture company, IWF operates prison planets, deploys armed security forces against civilians, and its leadership engages in assassination, sabotage, and political conspiracy. The corporation's fate on its two major colonial worlds -- Veldvald liberated by native resistance, Maranyn devastated by cosmic catastrophe -- mirrors the broader collapse of the Council's interstellar order. On Earth, IWF's security forces are among those that the F.F.D.E. fights in the streets of Turin, making the corporation a direct symbol of the caste oppression that triggers the War of the Castes.

The Takamahi sisters' story also illustrates the personal cost of corporate power: Lucia is assassinated by Valdec's agents despite opposing his regime, and Ceryl inherits a corporation that is dissolving along with the entire Council system.
