Character First: 049 - The Computer's Ultimatum

Anlyka terCrupp

Status: Unknown -- last seen cornered by Shadows in her Ural bunker; planned nuclear strike on Geneva; fate unresolved

"The GeneralManags, led by Anlyka terCrupp, plot to discredit Ignazius Tyll and seize control of the Council."
-- Booklet 076, "War of the Castes"

Anlyka terCrupp is the GeneralManag of the Allwelten-Stahl-Konsortium (ASK, the All-Worlds Steel Consortium), one of the most powerful corporations affiliated with the Council of Corporations. Appearing across eight booklets of Die Terranauten, terCrupp is the saga's most prominent example of corporate opportunism -- a political operator who shifts allegiances with ruthless pragmatism, opposing Max von Valdec when it serves her interests, supporting Ignazius Tyll's appointment when she needs a controllable figurehead, and then engineering his destruction when he proves insufficiently pliable. Her arc culminates in the War of the Castes, where she plots a nuclear strike on Geneva rather than accept the dissolution of corporate power.

TerCrupp twice defines the political fate of Ignazius Tyll: first supporting his appointment as interim Lord Colonel after Valdec's fall, then orchestrating his removal through political sabotage. Her betrayal illustrates the corporate world's view of institutional governance -- useful when it serves their interests, disposable when it does not.

Biography

Corporate Power and the Council Opposition (Pre-2502)

Anlyka terCrupp commands the Allwelten-Stahl-Konsortium, a major heavy-industry conglomerate with operations spanning the Terran Star Empire. ASK's reach includes steel production, industrial manufacturing, and resource extraction -- activities that repeatedly violated regulations protecting indigenous intelligences on colonial worlds. TerCrupp maintains a personal staff that includes Security Manager Gworsch, Finance Manager Sulai San, and News Manager Hinkel, as well as her aunt Tante Zella, described in the sources as "a parasite." Leon Gulager serves as an additional Manag within the ASK hierarchy.

TerCrupp first appears on the margins of the saga in Booklet 049, listed as GeneralManag of ASK during the crisis involving Max von Valdec's betrayal of the Terranauten and the mutated Ebberdyk computers. At this point, she is one of several corporate leaders operating under Valdec's dictatorial regime. As Ignazius Tyll begins his audit of the Kaiser Corporation's finances and Valdec's grip on the Council tightens, terCrupp positions herself within the growing corporate opposition.

The Xaxon Possession (2502)

TerCrupp's trajectory takes a bizarre and involuntary turn during the Gorthaur crisis. The alien Xaxon known as Gorthaur, seeking host bodies for the remaining Xaxon egos and bent on revenge for the destruction of his homeworld, travels to Geneva and takes control of terCrupp's body and several other ASK managers. Operating through terCrupp as his vessel, Gorthaur manipulates Earth's computer network, causing widespread chaos -- downgrading millions of Relax to Noman status and destabilizing the planetary infrastructure. The Xaxon entity inhabiting terCrupp's body is referred to in the sources as "the Technician" (Booklet 053).

While possessed, terCrupp's body is used in an assassination attempt on Max von Valdec at Kaiser Corporation headquarters in New Berlin. Valdec is nearly killed by Gorthaur (operating through terCrupp's body) but is saved by the Gray Guards. Gorthaur then retreats to the ASK headquarters in Geneva, where the Terranauten ultimately confront and defeat him. Valdec exploits the entire episode to frame terCrupp and the Council opposition for the unrest, using the chaos as cover to dissolve the Council and declare a state of emergency (Booklet 053).

The extent to which terCrupp retains memory of or is psychologically affected by the Xaxon possession is not addressed in the narrative. What is clear is that she survives the ordeal and returns to political activity.

Valdec's Fall and the Appointment of Tyll (2502)

When Valdec dissolves the Council for the second time and declares absolute emergency rule, terCrupp joins the underground resistance against him. She gathers with other opposition members -- Wilbert terBarden of Green Hill Corporation, Timian Mira of the Export-Kartell, and Lucia Takamahi of Interstellar Wood & Furniture -- at a secret base in the Urals, where Manuel Lucci of the Brak Shakram Command has brought Ignazius Tyll after his escape from the Lord Inspection headquarters (Booklet 054).

After Chan de Nouille broadcasts evidence of Valdec's illegal deconditioning of Gray Guards and the dictator's support collapses, terCrupp and the opposition faction support the appointment of Tyll as interim Lord Colonel. The choice is strategic: Tyll is an honest bureaucrat with no corporate portfolio and no independent military power -- precisely the kind of leader the GeneralManags can work around. TerCrupp backs a man she believes she can control (Booklet 054).

Council Intrigue During Tyll's Tenure (2502-2503)

During the approximately eighteen months of Tyll's interim government, terCrupp and her fellow GeneralManags work to consolidate their own power within the reconstituted Council. She is described as being "in conflict with Lucia Takamahi" during this period, suggesting the corporate opposition is itself fractured by internal rivalries even as it nominally supports Tyll's government (Booklet 072).

TerCrupp also involves herself in Council debates over the Terranauten's treaty. When the Council discusses the Terranauts' role amidst growing economic and political unrest on Earth, terCrupp defends the Terranauts -- a surprising stance that likely reflects her calculation that supporting Driver space travel serves ASK's commercial interests against the remnants of the Kaiser Corporation's Kaiser Force monopoly (Booklet 060).

During this period, the political landscape is increasingly unstable. The GeneralManags -- including Marya Briden of the Terran Banking Consortium, Hendrik dalghson of the Ziolkowski-Werft, and Shamir Zhymer of Wehrtechnik AG -- form various conspiracies to seize control. TerCrupp's faction, known as the terCrupp Clique, operates as a distinct power bloc within the Council, making strategic alliances and, in at least one case, a serious miscalculation with Patran Grevenhart, the acting Manag of Kaiser, who proves to be a loyalist of the exiled Valdec (Booklet 060).

The War of the Castes: The Plot Against Tyll (September 2503)

The War of the Castes erupts across Earth in September 2503. The Action Committee Free Africa launches an armed uprising in Kilimanjaro. The Nomans revolt in the ruins of New Delhi. The F.F.D.E. coordinates strikes and resistance across the globe. David terGorden, now a GeneralManag himself after claiming his Biotroniks inheritance, is appointed Special Envoy of the Council to mediate between the corporations and the insurgent groups.

TerCrupp sees the crisis as an opportunity. She leads the GeneralManags in a coordinated plot to discredit Tyll and seize institutional control of the Council. The plot operates on multiple levels:

  1. Sabotage of mediation: TerCrupp's faction orchestrates an assassination attempt on Manuel Lucci during his negotiations with David, deliberately destroying the peace process and creating the appearance that Tyll's government cannot maintain order.
  2. Political removal: Using the escalating chaos as pretext, terCrupp and her allies engineer Tyll's formal removal from power during a Council session.
  3. Manipulation of the succession: The power vacuum left by Tyll's ouster leads to David terGorden's unexpected election as the new Lord Colonel -- a maneuver orchestrated by Chan de Nouille, who needs a sympathetic figure to facilitate her plans for reaching Shondyke (Booklet 076).

The removal of Tyll represents terCrupp's most consequential political act. The man she once championed as Lord Colonel is destroyed by the same corporate machinery that elevated him -- and terCrupp is the hand that turns the wheel.

The Nuclear Gambit (October-November 2503)

As the War of the Castes intensifies, terCrupp retreats to her underground bunker in the Urals. From this refuge, she monitors the deteriorating situation with growing desperation. She laments the failure of Tyll's government and distrusts Chan de Nouille's motives. David terGorden's return to Earth as Lord Colonel, backed by the Gray Guards, threatens to impose a settlement that would strip the corporations of their power.

TerCrupp's response is extreme: she plans a nuclear strike on Geneva to destroy the Council administration building and everyone in it. The plan reflects a scorched-earth logic -- if the corporations cannot control the Council, then the Council will cease to exist. Her SD agent Frig is tasked with launching the nuclear missile (Booklet 079).

Simultaneously, terCrupp forges an alliance with Warlord Gambelher, a traitorous Gray Guard commander, and the ASK corporation provides support for his coup attempt against Chan de Nouille. Gambelher uses time-distorting technology obtained from Ultima Thule to launch a devastating attack on the Council administration in Geneva -- an attack that kills both Ignazius Tyll and Sarneyke Eloise (Booklet 079).

As the Shadows -- Chan de Nouille's covert agents -- close in on her Ural bunker, terCrupp attempts to escape. She launches a decoy space ferry piloted by her Security Manager Gworsch, who is killed in the attempt. The narrative leaves terCrupp cornered in the Urals, her nuclear strike ultimately prevented and her corporate power structure collapsing around her as David and Manuel Lucci announce the dissolution of the Council and the transfer of corporate assets to worker control (Booklet 079).

The Allwelten-Stahl-Konsortium (ASK)

The Allwelten-Stahl-Konsortium is terCrupp's power base and one of the most significant corporations in the Council of Corporations. Known by its abbreviation ASK, the consortium operates across the heavy industry sector -- steel production, resource extraction, and industrial manufacturing. Under terCrupp's leadership, ASK repeatedly violated regulations protecting indigenous intelligences through aggressive resource extraction on colonial worlds.

ASK maintains its own security apparatus, including corporate guards (referred to as "ASK-Grays" when working alongside the Gray Guards) and SD agents such as Frig, who is tasked with launching the nuclear missile against Geneva. The corporation's headquarters are located in Geneva, with terCrupp maintaining an underground refuge in the Urals for emergencies. ASK also controls facilities including an ASK-Latifundie (corporate estate) and ASK-Welt (an ASK-controlled world).

During the War of the Castes, ASK allies with Warlord Gambelher against Chan de Nouille, providing institutional support for his military coup attempt. The IWF-Verwaltungsfabrik -- a factory in Southeast Asia belonging to the rival corporation Interstellar Wood & Furniture -- is among the targets terCrupp plans to destroy, reflecting the internecine violence between corporations even as the broader civil war rages.

Themes

The Corporate Survivor

Anlyka terCrupp embodies the survivalism of the corporate elite in Die Terranauten. She is not driven by ideology or vision but by the imperative to preserve and expand her power. She opposes Valdec not because he is a tyrant but because his tyranny excludes her. She supports Tyll not because she values institutional governance but because an honest bureaucrat is easier to manipulate than a strongman. She plots against David not because she disagrees with peace but because peace on his terms means the end of corporate supremacy. Every alliance is temporary; every principle is negotiable; every person is an instrument.

The Mirror of Valdec

In an ironic parallel, terCrupp's final act -- planning a nuclear strike on Geneva -- mirrors Valdec's own threat to destroy Earth's cities with nuclear weapons when he fled the planet in 2502 (Booklet 054). Both resort to the ultimate weapon when their power collapses. The difference is that Valdec uses the threat to ensure his escape, while terCrupp uses it to ensure that if she cannot rule, no one will. Where Valdec is a visionary tyrant, terCrupp is a nihilist one.

The Expendability of Moderates

TerCrupp's betrayal of Ignazius Tyll crystallizes the saga's argument about institutional moderates: that in a system controlled by corporate oligarchs, revolutionary movements, and military commanders, the honest centrist has no constituency that will defend him. Tyll is useful to terCrupp as a compromise candidate but worthless the moment the compromise no longer serves her interests. The same woman who championed his appointment engineers his removal without hesitation -- and his death follows shortly after, at the hands of the military ally she herself recruited.

Notes

  • Three separate stub pages exist for this character in the vault: Anlyka terCrupp, terCrupp (described as "a Generalmanag who has gone missing"), and Anlykater Crupp (a mis-parsed variant of her name). All refer to the same individual.
  • The Xaxon entity that inhabited terCrupp's body during the Gorthaur crisis is separately catalogued as "Technician" in the character index.
  • TerCrupp's ultimate fate is unresolved in the narrative. She is last seen cornered by Shadows in her Ural bunker during Booklet 079. Whether she was captured, killed, or escaped is never stated. She does not appear in the later booklets covering Valdec's return and the Second Reich.
  • The terCrupp Clique is noted as a distinct political faction within the Council, suggesting terCrupp commands loyalty beyond her own corporation.
  • ASK's involvement with Warlord Gambelher's attack on the Council administration -- the attack that kills Ignazius Tyll and Sarneyke Eloise -- makes terCrupp indirectly responsible for two of the War of the Castes' most significant deaths, even though she is not present at the battle.

Anlyka terCrupp appears in Booklets 049, 053, 054, 060, 072, 076, 078, and 079 of Die Terranauten.
