Species First: 013

Genessaner

Status: Near-threshold power; surviving but scarred after the Swinging plague

The Genessaner (also rendered as Genessans) are an ancient alien species native to the swamp-and-jungle world Genessos. They are among the most advanced non-human civilizations encountered by humanity during the age of Die Terranauten, considered close to threshold power status -- a classification reserved for civilizations that have merged PSI and technology into a unified mastery of cosmic forces. Apart from the Genessaner Cantos, humanity had not encountered a single spacefaring alien race since the beginning of the space age, making first contact with this species a pivotal event in human history.

The Genessaner are deeply connected to Space II, the alternate dimension that underpins all Driver-based space travel, and they maintain a unique spiritual relationship with their dead through the Entity -- a soul conglomerate residing in Space II composed of deceased Genessaner consciousness. Their most prominent representative, Cantos, served as humanity's principal extraterrestrial ally across the saga, warning against the existential dangers of Kaiser Force technology before ultimately sacrificing his individual existence to save his homeworld.

Homeworld: Genessos

Genessos is a swamp-and-jungle planet characterized by dense vegetation, vast wetlands, and a hostile but deeply alive ecosystem. The planet's biosphere is interwoven with Space II on a fundamental level -- the membrane between normal space and Space II is thinner on Genessos than on most worlds, granting the Genessaner their extraordinary PSI capabilities but also making the planet acutely vulnerable to cosmic disruptions.

Key features of Genessos include:

  • The Tafelberg (Table Mountain) -- A flat-topped mountain that serves as the spiritual and metaphysical center of Genessaner civilization. It is the seat of the Entity's influence and the site of the most sacred rituals. The Guardians of the Tafelberg protect this site and maintain the equilibrium between the living Genessaner and the Entity in Space II.
  • Swamps and jungles -- The dominant terrain, teeming with creatures that share the Genessaner connection to Space II. When the planet fell into crisis, these creatures began dying en masse.
  • The Space Road connection -- Genessos is linked to the Space Roads, a network of PSI-based pathways used for interstellar travel, allowing Steerers to navigate to and from the planet.

Genessos suffered two major ecological crises during the saga, both caused by the ripple effects of humanity's Kaiser Force technology disrupting the universal order (Booklets 091-092).

Physical Description

The Genessaner are alien beings visually distinct from humanity. Humans refer to them as "Green Ones" -- a description suggesting a greenish coloration or bioluminescence. Key physical features include:

  • Head Membranes (Kopfmembranen) -- Specialized cranial structures used for sound perception, distinct from human ears and likely serving double duty as PSI-reception organs.
  • Highly adaptable physiology -- The Genessaner race is described as "highly adaptable," capable of surviving in extreme environments, temporal displacement, and even forced physical transformation. When Cantos was subjected to a PSI attack in Berlin that transformed humans into reptilian creatures, he was instead transformed into a giant bird-like being and continued functioning (Booklet 050).
  • Non-human form -- While detailed morphological descriptions are sparse, the Genessaner are clearly non-humanoid enough to provoke immediate hostility and fear from humans on first contact. Their appearance was exploited by Max von Valdec's propaganda machine to frame them as monstrous invaders.

Culture and Society

Genessaner civilization is built on principles fundamentally different from human society:

Individualism

The Genessaner value Individualismus (individualism) -- a philosophical stance that prizes personal consciousness, autonomy, and unique identity. This is notable because their deepest spiritual institution, the Entity, represents the opposite: collective merging of consciousness. The tension between individual existence and collective transcendence lies at the heart of Genessaner culture and becomes the central drama of Cantos's ultimate sacrifice.

Social Roles and Castes

Several specialized roles exist within Genessaner society:

Adjusters (Anpasser)Genessaner who defend Genessos by subtly diverting approaching spaceships through PSI manipulation, protecting the planet from unwanted contactDawos
Guardians of the Tafelberg (Wachter des Tafelberges)Genessaner with a deep sense of communal responsibility who protect the Tafelberg and maintain equilibrium between the living and the EntityModo, Quasimodo

Genessan PilotGenessaner pilots capable of flying spacecraft alone without a Driver Lodge -- a feat that requires immense PSI abilityCantos

Connection to the Baahrsans

The Genessaner share a historical connection with the Baahrsans, an ancient race that lived in complete harmony with nature. The Entity of the Baahrsans -- a collective soul that evolved from the Baahrsan race -- became connected to the Genessaner over time. Llewellyn 709 learned about this connection during his visit to Genessos (Booklet 091), suggesting that the Genessaner may be descendants of, successors to, or deeply intertwined with the Baahrsan civilization. The Baahrsan homeworld in the Kangrah Galaxy was destroyed (galaxy M 2143 and system Varrna), and their Entity migrated to or merged with that of the Genessaner.

Technology

The Genessaner possess technology that surpasses Earth's in several domains:

  • Genessan computer -- Computing systems far exceeding Earth technology in processing power.
  • Spherical spacecraft -- Cantos's Ship is described as a spherical vessel capable of interstellar and interdimensional travel, equipped with a Location Shield for cloaking and the ability to manipulate space-time. Genessaner pilots can operate these vessels alone, without the team of Drivers that human ships require.
  • PSI-based infrastructure -- Genessaner civilization relies on organic, PSI-based systems rather than the mechanical technologies favored by humanity.

Abilities

The Genessaner possess formidable natural abilities rooted in their deep connection to Space II:

PSI Powers

  • Telepathy -- Genessaner can communicate telepathically across vast distances, perform mind-merges with other species, and influence the behavior of other beings. Cantos's initial telepathic contact with Karel Krystan inadvertently overwhelmed the human's mind (Booklet 013).
  • PSI combat -- Capable of defending themselves against armed attackers without lethal force. Cantos subdued the Super-Driver Isis 31 and overpowered groups of Terranauts and Gray Guards while consistently choosing incapacitation over killing.
  • Interdimensional awareness -- Genessaner can sense disturbances in Space II across cosmic distances. Cantos detected the PSI call for help from Syrta that drew him to humanity's sector of the galaxy.
  • Lodge formation -- Genessaner can form Super-Lodges among themselves and with other PSI-gifted species, combining their mental energies to achieve extraordinary feats such as summoning the Cosmic Spores or penetrating the Entity.

Adaptability

The Genessaner are described as "highly adaptable" as a species trait. This manifests in:

  • Survival in extreme environments (swamp worlds, space, interdimensional travel)
  • Resistance to temporal displacement (Cantos survived being hurled back in time to the destruction of Zoe)
  • Capacity to withstand forced physical transformation (the Berlin PSI attack, Booklet 050)

Cosmic Navigation

Genessaner pilots can navigate spacecraft alone through Space I and Space II without the need for a Driver Lodge -- an achievement that speaks to their immense individual PSI capabilities.

Understanding of the Cosmic Web

The Genessaner possess a profound understanding of the structure of the universe that far exceeds humanity's:

Space II and the Membrane

They understand that Space I (normal space) and Space II are separated by a permeable membrane, and that aggressive technologies like Kaiser Force tear this membrane, causing cascading damage across both spaces. Their homeworld's thin membrane gives them experiential knowledge of these dynamics that purely theoretical human science cannot match.

The Entity and Soul Continuity

The Genessaner know that consciousness does not end at death. Their dead form the Entity -- a soul conglomerate residing in Space II that serves as a collective spiritual reservoir. This is not mere belief but observable, contactable reality. The Entity can communicate, act, and even become dangerous when disturbed, as happened during "the Swinging" plague (Booklet 092).

Supercivilizations and Entities

The Genessaner are aware of the Entities -- post-technological supercivilizations millions of years old that observe and, when necessary, intervene in galactic affairs. Cantos promised to provide coordinates for contacting these supercivilizations (Booklet 091), positioning the Genessaner as intermediaries between younger species like humanity and the elder powers of the cosmos.

The Black Universe

Cantos demonstrated knowledge of the Black Universe -- a nightmarish realm representing the end-state of a civilization that relied on Kaiser Force-like technology. He used this knowledge to educate Chan de Nouille about the ultimate consequences of humanity's technological path (Booklet 071).

The Space Roads

Genessos is connected to the Space Roads, a network of PSI-based interstellar pathways. The Genessaner understand this system well enough to summon the Cosmic Spores -- living organisms that travel through space and can heal damaged planets -- through it (Booklet 091).

Relationship with Humanity

The Genessaner-human relationship is one of the most complex and consequential dynamics in the saga:

First Contact

The first meaningful contact occurred when Cantos arrived at the colonial world Syrta in 2499, drawn by a PSI distress call. His appearance terrified humans, and the Gray Guards immediately attacked his ship. Through a telepathic merge with Karel Krystan, Cantos gained the ability to communicate with humans and learned about their society, languages, and the perilous Space II experiments being conducted by the Kaiser Corporation (Booklet 013).

Cassandra and Scapegoat

Throughout the saga, the Genessaner -- particularly Cantos -- served as humanity's most persistent warner against the dangers of Kaiser Force, only to be vilified for their efforts. Max von Valdec used propaganda to blame the Oxyd catastrophe on "the Genessaner," framing them as alien invaders preparing a conquest of Earth (Booklet 019). This Big Lie persisted for years before the truth emerged through the Noman broadcast of Brak Shakram (Booklet 023).

Alliance with the Terranauts

The Genessaner found their strongest human allies among the Terranauts, the rebel faction of Drivers who opposed the Kaiser Corporation. Key alliance milestones:

  • Cantos freed imprisoned Drivers on Syrta and commandeered the SOLAR (Booklet 013)
  • He stabilized the spatial rift and sent Oxyd into Space II, saving Earth (Booklets 020-021)
  • He warned the Terranauts of the destruction of Xaxon and accompanied them to Earth to negotiate the abolition of Kaiser Force (Booklet 050)
  • He orchestrated the journey to the Black Universe that converted Chan de Nouille from potential enemy to crucial ally (Booklet 071)
  • He guided the Terranauts to Genessos and promised coordinates for contacting supercivilizations (Booklet 091)

Advocating for Humanity

Despite the dangers humanity posed to the cosmos through Kaiser Force, the Genessaner -- through Cantos -- chose advocacy over condemnation. Before departing for Genessos after the Phoenix crisis, Cantos pledged to argue for humanity among his own people, acknowledging that humans were dangerous but deserved a chance (Booklet 032).

The Crises of Genessos

The Kaiser Force Ecological Collapse (Booklet 091)

The ripple effects of humanity's Kaiser Force technology disrupted the universal order and caused ecological catastrophe on Genessos. The planet's creatures began dying, the protective shields maintained by Genessaner PSI weakened, and powerful attacks from Space II devastated the landscape. The crisis was partially alleviated when a Super-Lodge of Genessaner and Steerers summoned the Cosmic Spores through the Space Roads to begin healing the damage.

The Swinging Plague (Booklet 092)

A far more dangerous crisis followed: a plague called "the Swinging" began killing Genessaner by disrupting their connection to Space II. The root cause was the Entity itself, which had become a "ravenous Moloch" -- indiscriminately destroying Genessaner and drawing everything into other spaces. The Entity, composed of the souls of deceased Genessaner, had been destabilized and was now feeding on the living.

The crisis was resolved only through Cantos's sacrifice. At the Tafelberg, a Lodge was formed with Llewellyn 709 leading, Thor 51 and Jana bundling energies, Lineasker steering, and Cantos serving as "the needle" -- driven into the Entity to inoculate it. Cantos merged with the soul conglomerate, becoming its voice as the Cantos-Entity. Through him, the Entity agreed to return to its origin, halting the suction that threatened to destroy Genessos and the surrounding cosmos.

Genessos was saved, but Cantos as an individual being was lost.

Connection to the Entities

The Genessaner occupy a unique position in the galactic hierarchy:

  • They are close to being considered a threshold power -- a civilization that has merged PSI and technology -- but have not fully crossed that threshold (Booklet 050).
  • Their Entity -- the soul conglomerate in Space II -- functions similarly to the great Entities (supercivilizations) but on a smaller, more personal scale.
  • The Entity is connected to the Entity of the Baahrsans, linking Genessaner spiritual infrastructure to a much older cosmic lineage.
  • The Entities (supercivilizations) sent Executors like Tscherta and Tserin to deal with the Kaiser Force threat; the Genessaner served as intermediaries and interpreters of the Entities' intentions for humanity.
  • After Cantos's merger, the Cantos-Entity became a bridge between the Genessaner soul conglomerate and the wider cosmos, potentially elevating the species closer to true threshold power status.

Role in the Saga

The Genessaner serve several crucial narrative functions across Die Terranauten:

  1. First alien contact -- They represent humanity's first meaningful encounter with a spacefaring alien intelligence, shattering human solipsism and revealing that the cosmos is populated by ancient, watchful civilizations.
  1. The ecological conscience -- Through their organic, PSI-based relationship with the cosmos, the Genessaner embody the alternative path humanity rejected when it chose Kaiser Force over Driver-based space travel. They are living proof that technological power without ecological wisdom leads to destruction.
  1. Bridge to the supercivilizations -- Without the Genessaner, humanity would have no diplomatic channel to the Entities and no hope of averting their retaliatory strikes. Cantos's promise of coordinates for contacting supercivilizations (Booklet 091) opened the only door to humanity's survival.
  1. Mirror to human failings -- The Genessaner's treatment by humanity -- attacked on sight, vilified by propaganda, scapegoated for crises they tried to prevent -- reflects the saga's recurring themes of xenophobia, institutional corruption, and the human tendency to blame messengers for the messages they carry.
  1. The cost of cosmic communion -- The Genessaner's deepest secret -- that their dead form an Entity that can turn destructive -- and Cantos's ultimate sacrifice to restore that Entity, present transcendence not as escape but as responsibility. Individual death becomes cosmic service.
