JAMES COOK

Status: Destroyed

The JAMES COOK is a Driver freighter and container freighter operated by the Terranauts. Originally commissioned as a large interstellar cargo vessel, the JAMES COOK was converted into an expedition ship for one of the most consequential diplomatic and exploratory missions in Terranaut history: the voyage to Genessos and beyond, aimed at contacting alien supercivilizations and seeking forgiveness for the devastation caused by humanity's Kaiser Force technology. The ship was ultimately destroyed at Hephaistos when the traitor Frost escaped in a hidden Kaiser Force space fighter, the transition energy tearing the vessel apart.

Overview

The JAMES COOK served as the primary vessel for the Terranaut peace delegation dispatched from Sarym to make contact with galactic civilizations. The mission was nominally a diplomatic one -- to negotiate a standstill agreement with the Entities and seek atonement for the entropy-accelerating effects of Kaiser Force technology on the galaxy. In reality, the mission was compromised from the outset: Frost, the representative of Lord Kaiser Max von Valdec, had secret orders to use the expedition to locate the Entities' central worlds and relay their coordinates back to Valdec for a preemptive annihilation strike using the Kaiser Force Lance.

The ship's journey took it from Sarym to Genessos, the home world of the Genessans, and then onward to Hephaistos, the artificial world known as the Galactic Archive. The JAMES COOK never returned from this final destination.

The JAMES COOK is described as a large container freighter converted for the interstellar expedition. It featured a central dome area where the crew gathered, a Lodge platform located in the forward "Thorn-Tip" section, and sufficient cargo space to conceal a Kaiser Force space fighter without the knowledge of the Terranaut crew. The ship carried a complement of Drivers who provided PSI-based propulsion, supplemented by the Super-Drivers Isis 31 and Thor 51 who followed the PSI trail of the Genessan Cantos.

History

Commissioning and Departure (Booklet 090)

Following Max von Valdec's decision to launch a preemptive strike against the Entities, he dispatched Frost to Sarym to negotiate with the Terranauts for the use of mistletoe and a lodge to facilitate a faster-than-light expedition. The stated purpose was peaceful contact with alien civilizations; the true purpose was intelligence-gathering for Valdec's planned annihilation campaign.

The JAMES COOK departed from Sarym carrying a joint delegation of Terranauts, Drivers, and Valdec's operatives. The Super-Drivers Isis 31 and Thor 51, secretly conditioned to obey Frost, guided the ship by following the PSI trail left by Cantos, a Genessan who had previously visited human space. Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern, Steerersman Novices, arrived on Sarym to warn of the impending Final Strike but ultimately supported the expedition, emphasizing the need for a measured response to the Entities' threat.

Voyage to Genessos (Booklet 091)

The journey to Genessos was marked by deepening mistrust and open conflict between the Terranaut contingent and Valdec's representatives. Llewellyn 709 experienced prophetic dreams of the JAMES COOK's destruction at Valdec's hands. Tensions boiled over when Jana, the Witch physically assaulted Frost after provocation from Isis 31. The IRMINSUL lodge attempted to overpower Isis 31 with PSI energy but failed, demonstrating the dangerous power of the Super-Drivers.

During the voyage, Llewellyn 709 discovered a stowaway who proved to be Dawos, a Genessan who revealed that Genessos was in crisis due to the effects of Kaiser Force technology and that the PSI trail had been deliberately falsified. Cantos appeared aboard the ship and confirmed the dire situation.

Llewellyn 709, Scanner Cloud, and Morgenstern departed the JAMES COOK to accompany Cantos to the surface of Genessos, leaving the ship in orbit. There they witnessed the devastating effects of entropy acceleration on the planet, encountered the Genessans, and helped summon the Cosmic Spores to heal the damage. They returned to the JAMES COOK after Cantos promised coordinates for contacting supercivilizations.

The Genessos Crisis (Booklet 092)

After departing Genessos, the JAMES COOK's mission was interrupted when Scanner Cloud collapsed with visions from Merlin II urging a return to investigate the Tafelberg (Table Mountain) on Genessos. The Drivers aboard found their powers diminished, and the Super-Drivers fell ill.

The ship returned to Genessos, where Cantos revealed that a plague called "the Swinging" was devastating the planet. The crisis centered on the Entity -- a soul conglomerate of deceased Genessans in Space II -- which had turned into a destructive force. Llewellyn 709 led a Lodge to penetrate the Entity's core, with Cantos sacrificing himself to inoculate the Entity and restore balance.

The group departed Genessos aboard Cantos's Spaceship, setting course for Hephaistos, their next destination.

Arrival at Hephaistos and Destruction (Booklet 093)

The JAMES COOK arrived at Hephaistos, an artificial world known as the Galactic Archive and believed to be the central world of the Entities. Llewellyn 709 led a delegation to the surface aboard the Ringo JAMES COOK Eins to investigate the Pyramid of Knowledge.

While the delegation explored Hephaistos -- encountering bizarre manifestations, battling Arbitrators, and confronting an Entity seeking the Connex Crystal -- Silent Chorp remained aboard the JAMES COOK and uncovered Frost's true plan. Frost intended to transmit the coordinates of Hephaistos to Valdec for a Kaiser Force attack, and had concealed a Kaiser Force space fighter in the ship's cargo holds for his escape. The ship also secretly carried a Kaiser Force Lance, a devastating new superweapon.

On the surface, Thor 51 attacked the Entity and was killed. Llewellyn 709, aided by the New Steerers, managed to secure the Connex Crystal and rescue Jana.

Back on the JAMES COOK, Frost and Isis 31 launched the hidden Kaiser Force space fighter. Silent Chorp and other Drivers attempted to stop them but failed. The violent Kaiser Force transition tore the JAMES COOK apart. Altamont O'Hale, Sardina Giccomo, and Serge-Serge Suvez were killed in the destruction. Silent Chorp, Mater Lian, and other surviving Terranauts escaped in a Ringo, abandoning the wreckage of the JAMES COOK at Hephaistos.

Aftermath (Booklets 095, 097, 099)

With the JAMES COOK destroyed, the surviving Terranauts continued their mission on foot through the Pyramid of Knowledge and the Star City. Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern sacrificed themselves to stop the Arbitrators. Mater Lian died from KF-emissions. The survivors, led by Claude Farrell after Llewellyn 709 was incapacitated, eventually reached the Sphere Tunnel leading to the Central World of the Entities.

Meanwhile, Frost's transmitted coordinates enabled Valdec to launch the Steel Fleet in a preemptive strike, leading to the climactic events of the Reality Switch (Booklet 097).

The JAMES COOK's mission is referenced in the final booklet (Booklet 099), where Morgenstern is identified as a former crew member and plays a role in the ecological transformation of Earth. The ship's original diplomatic mandate -- to negotiate a standstill agreement with the Entities -- is recalled as the broader context for the saga's conclusion.
