Irminsul

"And in that moment he saw the glacial lake. Its colour was a milky pale blue. In the middle of the lake was an island of at least ten square kilometres in size, within which there was again a lake, and within that a further island -- the land of Irminsul of legend."
-- Major Gorden's discovery of the Holy Valley (Booklet 073)
"Jana, the Witch, owner of the IRMINSUL, expresses her frustration with Llewellyn 709's strict military discipline, which she believes hinders the crew's effectiveness."
-- Events aboard the IRMINSUL (Booklet 075)

Irminsul is a name of profound significance in Die Terranauten, carrying three distinct but interconnected meanings across the saga's 99 booklets: it denotes the sacred island at the heart of the Holy Valley where Yggdrasil's trunk rises, the Driver freighter commanded by Jana that serves as a primary Terranaut warship, and the Driver Lodge that operates aboard that ship. All three share a common root in Norse-Germanic mythology, and all three are woven into the saga's deepest themes of nature, resistance, and cosmic destiny.

The name appears in at least 14 booklets -- spanning from the flashback narratives of Major Gorden's discovery of Yggdrasil to the final booklet's depiction of David terGorden standing on the shores of Land Irminsul as the Earth undergoes ecological transformation.

I. Irminsul: The Sacred Island

Physical Description

Irminsul is the innermost island in the nested geography of the Holy Valley (Odrodir) in Greenland. The valley's structure is concentric: a high mountain wall encloses a glacial lake; within that lake lies an outer island of approximately ten square kilometres; within that island lies a second, inner lake; and within that inner lake stands Irminsul itself -- the island where Yggdrasil's thirty-metre trunk rises from the earth.

The inner lake is described as "more of a hollow formed from whitish limestone deposits" (Booklet 023). The island itself is covered with a tangle of gnarled, intertwined timber -- the root network and trunk of the primeval bristlecone pine that is Yggdrasil. Exotic blossoms proliferate upon this network "like parasites" -- the precious Mistletoe Blossoms that enable Driver navigation through Space II and that bear the twisted-triangle shape of the Triadic Monochord, the Drivers' sacred symbol (Booklet 007).

A narrow wooden bridge connects Irminsul to the surrounding land, crossing the inner lake. This bridge is the only direct access to the foot of Yggdrasil and features in several pivotal scenes: David terGorden and Llewellyn 709 cross it together to commune with the tree (Booklet 007); Merlin helps the pregnant Myriam across it toward his cave (Booklet 031); the child Lithe runs across it to play among Yggdrasil's roots (Booklet 031).

The Island Within Space II

When David terGorden and Llewellyn 709 enter Space II from the foot of Yggdrasil, the island of Irminsul is transfigured. It appears to have grown and to be "floating upon an endless sea" that flows from a well between Yggdrasil's roots -- the well called Hvergelmir, "from which all the waters of the worlds came" (Booklet 007). In this vision, Yggdrasil's branches reach across the void toward distant suns, and a staircase carved into the trunk winds upward into infinity. The Space II version of Irminsul is thus the mythological axis mundi made literal -- the center of the cosmos, the point from which all reality radiates.

Significance of the Sacred Site

Irminsul is the physical locus of the saga's most sacred organism. It is not merely the "location" of Yggdrasil but its dwelling -- the place where cosmic intelligence intersects with terrestrial matter. Major Gorden understood this instinctively: "Even I have an uncertain dread of setting foot on the island of Irminsul," he confessed. "Perhaps because I fear that I might cause you harm by doing so" (Booklet 073). The island is both sanctuary and altar, and those who approach it -- Merlin, Myriam, David -- are changed by the encounter.

The name itself carries this weight. In the translated texts, the phrase "the land of Irminsul of legend" (Booklet 073) suggests that the name preceded Major Gorden's discovery -- that it was already enshrined in myth before a human being set foot there.

II. IRMINSUL: Jana's Driver Freighter

Description

The IRMINSUL is a Driver freighter owned and commanded by Jana, the Witch. Originally a conventional cargo vessel, it becomes one of the primary warships of the Terranauts during the guerrilla campaigns of the mid-to-late saga (Booklets 067-091). It is described as being equipped with conventional ion drives and combat stations (Booklet 077), capable of independent interstellar flight through Space II, and large enough to carry Ringo auxiliary craft for planetary landings and boarding operations.

The ship is named after the sacred island -- a choice that links Jana's vessel to the saga's deepest mythological and botanical threads. As the Jana character page notes: "The IRMINSUL, Jana's ship, is named after the Irminsul -- the great pillar or world tree of Saxon mythology, sacred to the Germanic peoples. This mirrors the saga's broader botanical-mystical theme, connecting Jana's vessel to Yggdrasil, the World Tree, and the Ancients' plant civilization."

Crew and Lodge

The IRMINSUL carries Jana's personal Driver Lodge -- the IRMINSUL Lodge -- which serves as the ship's psionic core. The lodge members include:

The Ship's Fate

The IRMINSUL is last explicitly mentioned in the context of the JAMES COOK expedition (Booklets 091-096). Whether the ship survived the expedition or was left behind when the Terranauts transferred to Cantos's spaceship at Genessos is not stated in the available texts. The Lodge that bears its name, however, continues to function through the saga's final arc.

III. The IRMINSUL Lodge

The IRMINSUL Lodge is Jana's Driver Lodge, named after her ship. It functions as a tightly bonded psionic unit -- more family than military formation -- and remains remarkably stable across Jana's appearances from Booklet 067 through 096.

Lodge Activities

The IRMINSUL Lodge performs collective psionic operations of increasing cosmic significance as the saga progresses:

The Lodge's cohesion and continuity give the IRMINSUL crew a distinct identity within the Terranaut faction. While other Terranaut units shift and dissolve, Jana's lodge persists -- a constant in the turbulence of galactic war.

IV. The Name: Mythological and Saga Context

Historical Irminsul

In Germanic paganism, the Irminsul (Old Saxon: "great pillar") was a sacred pillar or tree trunk venerated by the pagan Saxons. It was believed to represent the axis mundi -- the pillar that supports the heavens. The most famous historical reference is its destruction by Charlemagne in 772 AD during the Saxon Wars, as part of the forced Christianization of the Germanic peoples. The Irminsul has long been associated with Yggdrasil, the Norse World Tree, and some scholars consider them manifestations of the same archetype: the cosmic tree or pillar that connects earth to heaven.

The Name in the Saga

The Die Terranauten saga deliberately invokes this mythological heritage. The name "Irminsul" attaches to the island where Yggdrasil stands -- making the connection between the historical sacred pillar and the saga's sentient cosmic tree explicit. The phrase "the land of Irminsul of legend" in Booklet 073 suggests the name carries mythological weight within the saga's own world: it is not merely a label but a recognition that this place was already part of human myth before Major Gorden physically discovered it.

When Jana, the Witch names her ship IRMINSUL, she extends this mythological resonance into the domain of resistance and war. Her ship becomes a mobile sanctuary -- a vessel that carries the Drivers' sacred heritage (the Lodge, the Mistletoe Blossoms, the Connex Crystal) across the stars, just as the original Irminsul once carried the Saxons' connection to the divine. That Jana is a former pirate who freely chose this name for her ship speaks to her independence: she does not merely inherit tradition; she claims it.

The Triple Resonance

The name Irminsul thus operates on three levels simultaneously:

  1. Sacred geography: The island at the centre of the Holy Valley, where Yggdrasil physically grows -- the axis mundi of the saga's cosmos
  2. Mobile heritage: The Driver freighter that carries the IRMINSUL Lodge, the Connex Crystal, and the Terranaut cause across the galaxy
  3. Mythological continuity: The echo of the historical Irminsul, the Saxon world-pillar destroyed by Charlemagne, reborn in a far-future context as both a living tree and a warship

This triple resonance makes Irminsul one of the saga's richest symbolic nodes -- a point where geography, mythology, technology, and narrative destiny converge.

Connections Between the Three Irminsuls

The three referents of "Irminsul" are not coincidental parallels but deliberate narrative links:

  • Jana's ship carries the name of the sacred island because the Driver tradition reveres Yggdrasil and the place where it grows. By naming her freighter IRMINSUL, Jana claims a spiritual inheritance even as she operates as a pirate and guerrilla fighter.
  • The IRMINSUL Lodge carries the Connex Crystal -- the precosmic artifact that must ultimately reach David terGorden at the sacred island. Jana, custodian of the Crystal, commands a ship named for the place where David was born and where the Crystal's cosmic journey will end. The ship is, in this sense, carrying a piece of Irminsul's destiny across the stars.
  • The saga's final scene brings the circle to completion: David stands on the shore of the Land Irminsul (the sacred island), having recovered the Connex Crystal (which was carried aboard the ship IRMINSUL), with Llewellyn 709 and the other Terranauts -- many of whom served aboard the ship or alongside the Lodge -- watching from the far shore.

The name Irminsul thus functions as a thread that ties the saga's terrestrial origins to its cosmic adventures and back again -- from the island where Yggdrasil grows, across the galaxy aboard Jana's freighter, and home to the island once more.

Irminsul appears in at least 14 of the 99 booklets of Die Terranauten -- as the sacred island where Yggdrasil grows, as the ship that carried the Terranauts' cause across the galaxy, and as the Lodge that held together through war and cosmic crisis. It is one of the saga's richest symbols: the name of a place, a vessel, and a community, all bound to the World Tree that stands at the centre of everything.
