"Chan de Nouille allows them to leave with the CYGNI, while she remains on Argus. The CYGNI escapes into Space II, with Llewellyn 709 and the other Drivers forming a Lodge to power the ship."
-- Events of Booklet 026
The CYGNI is one of the most important vessels in the saga of Die Terranauten, serving as the Terranauts' primary warship and mobile headquarters from booklet 026 through 063. Originally a DELTA-class Kaiser Force scout ship attached to the Intervention Fleet Inner Sector, the CYGNI was brought to Argus by Chan de Nouille and subsequently surrendered to the Terranauts -- effectively becoming the successor to the MIDAS as the rebels' flagship. Under the command of Llewellyn 709 and David terGorden, the CYGNI carried the Terranauts through prison world liberations, the Hate Plague crisis, the infiltration by Valhala 13, and the campaign against Max von Valdec on Sarym, before its final crash-landing on the hellworld Arioch.
Overview
The CYGNI occupies a pivotal narrative position in the saga. Where the MIDAS defined the Terranauts' first arc -- escape, exile, and discovery -- the CYGNI defines their second: organized resistance, fleet operations, and open war against the Council of Corporations. The ship's transfer from Chan de Nouille to the Terranauts at Argus (Booklet 026) marks a turning point: it is the moment the Terranauts cease to be refugees aboard a stolen prototype and become an operational military force with a proper warship.
The CYGNI should be distinguished from several related vessels:
| Vessel | Description | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| CYGNI Alpha | Altamont O'Hale's auxiliary ship, contactable by radio from the CYGNI | -- |
| CYGNI-Eins | A Ringo lifeboat carried aboard the CYGNI; used by Llewellyn 709 for solo missions | Booklet 045 |

History
Origins: Intervention Fleet Inner Sector
The CYGNI was built as a DELTA-class Kaiser Force scout ship and assigned to the Intervention Fleet Inner Sector, a Gray Guard rapid-response fleet operating in the inner sectors of the stellar empire. Its original commander was Queen Lorca. The ship served as a reconnaissance and courier vessel for the Council of Corporations' military apparatus.
Transfer at Argus (Booklet 026)
The CYGNI's pivotal moment came when Chan de Nouille, the Great Gray and mistress of the Gray Guards, used it to travel to Argus in the system of Astos' Eyes. There, she confronted David terGorden and Scanner Cloud, who had arrived aboard the MIDAS and been captured by Queen Lyra Mun.
In a surprising act of calculated mercy -- or strategic calculation -- Chan de Nouille allowed the Terranauts to depart with the CYGNI while she remained on Argus. Llewellyn 709 and the other Drivers formed a Lodge to power the ship's Kaiser Force drive, and the CYGNI escaped into Space II. This moment marked the end of the MIDAS era and the beginning of the CYGNI era for the Terranauts. The MIDAS was left behind at Argus, abandoned.
Prison World Liberation Campaign (Booklets 028-029)
With the CYGNI as their flagship, the Terranauts launched a coordinated campaign to liberate Drivers from Council prison worlds. The CYGNI operated alongside two other Terranaut vessels, the LASSALLE and the GARIBALDI, forming a small but effective fleet.
In Booklet 028, David terGorden, Llewellyn 709, and Claude Farrell were dispatched from the CYGNI to Veldvald, a prison planet disguised as a lumber operation run by Interstellar Wood & Furniture (IWF). The team entered the atmosphere via "cosmic surfboards" and ultimately liberated the planet with the help of the sentient tree Ro Ulema and the native Quom.
In Booklet 029, the CYGNI continued rescuing Drivers from prison worlds but was pursued by Gray Guard warships commanded by Queen Rolande aboard the FORD and Hauptmann Grith Shath aboard the SPENCER. A desperate transition to Space II near Taurus 17 destroyed the pursuing Kaiser Force ships but also severely damaged the CYGNI and caused casualties. The ship limped to Rorqual, the Terranauts' base in Space II.
Operations from Rorqual (Booklets 031, 035)
The CYGNI served as the primary link between Rorqual -- the Terranauts' secret base in Space II -- and normal space. In Booklet 031, it was referenced as "a ship used to travel between Space II and normal space."
In Booklet 035, the CYGNI was described as "a Kaiser Force cruiser converted into a Driver ship," confirming its transformation from a Council vessel into a Terranaut warship. It transported David terGorden, Llewellyn 709, Queen Mandorla, and Scanner Cloud to the planet Rubin, from which they traveled via space roads to Shondyke, the central world of the Gray Guards.
The Stonehenge II Mission and the Valhala Deception (Booklet 045)
One of the CYGNI's most consequential missions was the approach to Stonehenge II, a harsh planet where the Kaiser Corporation was mining Thingstones and excavating an ancient alien Ark. Llewellyn 709, driven by visions of the planet, launched a risky solo mission in the CYGNI-Eins (a Ringo lifeboat) while the CYGNI served as a distraction.
The mission was a disaster. Queen Ishiya had anticipated Llewellyn's arrival and prepared a trap. Valhala 13, a Riemenmann trained to impersonate Llewellyn, subdued the real Llewellyn and took his place. The CYGNI crew -- including Angila Fraim and Claude Farrell -- extracted Valhala believing him to be Llewellyn, while the real Llewellyn was imprisoned in a deep-sleep capsule on Stonehenge II.
The Quostan Rescue and the Hate Plague (Booklets 046-047)
Valhala 13's infiltration aboard the CYGNI led to catastrophe on Rorqual. He attacked the Terranauts and escaped with the CYGNI, taking Claude Farrell, Angila Fraim, and Sirdina Giccomo as hostages. Lyda Mar, who had recognized the imposter, stowed away aboard the ship.
Using her connection to the ship's Seeker, Lyda contacted the real Llewellyn 709, who had been freed from captivity on the icy planet Quostan by Ruben Carcones, a PSI-assassin. Lyda and Claude Farrell launched a rescue, extracting Llewellyn and Carcones. They escaped Quostan in the CYGNI with rescued Gray Guard prisoners, but discovered a terrifying truth: Lyda, Ennerk Prime, and Onnegart Vangralen had been infected on Sarym with the Hate Plague, a virus engineered by Hermano Lotz to cause uncontrollable rage and madness.
In Booklet 047, the CYGNI became the stage for a tense containment crisis. Queen Ishiya and her Gray Guards escaped confinement and attempted to seize control of the ship to deliver Valhala 13 to Max von Valdec. Claude Farrell and Ruben Carcones stopped them, but the virus continued to spread. Llewellyn 709 approached Earth and contacted Valdec, offering to exchange the Gray Guard prisoners for the antidote. Valdec refused, demanding unconditional surrender. The CYGNI was attacked by Gray Guard space fighters and fled into Space II, emerging near Rorqual.
David terGorden and Narda approached the CYGNI in a Ringo, but a Gray Guard prisoner launched an infected Ringo toward Rorqual in an attempt to spread the plague. Lyda and Llewellyn destroyed the infected Ringo, and the Terranauts devised a plan to lure Valdec into a trap using the BERLIN.The Sarym Campaign and Crash on Arioch (Booklets 061-063)
By 2503, the CYGNI was deployed to investigate the destruction of OUTPOST, a Gray Guard base in the Norvo System. Aboard the ship were Lyda Mar, David terGorden, Llewellyn 709, and other Terranauts. The CYGNI was attacked by Kaiser Force torpedoes -- remnants of the battle that destroyed OUTPOST -- and survived by hiding in an asteroid field (Booklet 061).
The ship proceeded to Sarym, where Valdec was conducting experiments on the Maritime Coral City's PSI aura. As the Terranauts approached, the Coral City's PSI defenses created a field that disabled ships. The CYGNI and a pursuing Gray Guard vessel were both pulled down and crashed on Arioch, a hellish planet in the Sarym system (Booklet 061).
The crash on Arioch marked the effective end of the CYGNI's service. In Booklet 062, survivors Onnegart Vangralen, Ennerk Prime, Han Harian, and Goliath struggled to survive among the wreckage on Arioch's hostile surface -- high gravity, a methane-ammonia atmosphere, crystal cyclones, and predatory Crystal Devils. The CYGNI wreck became one of several crash sites on the planet, alongside the MADRID and a Kaiser Force battleship. The survivors eventually found a coral city with a breathable atmosphere and the planet's PSI-Aura.
In Booklet 063, the CYGNI is referenced as having crashed on Arioch "due to the switching of the PSI-network," confirming that its destruction was a consequence of the larger battle for control of the PSI-aura between the Terranauts and Valdec's super-Drivers.

Relationship to the MIDAS
The CYGNI is the direct successor to the MIDAS as the Terranauts' flagship. The transition between the two ships occurred at Argus in Booklet 026, when Chan de Nouille allowed the Terranaut crew to depart aboard the CYGNI while the MIDAS was left behind.
| MIDAS | CYGNI | |
|---|---|---|
| Class | Kaiser Force experimental prototype | DELTA-class Kaiser Force scout |
| Origin | Seized during the Revolt on Luna | Surrendered by Chan de Nouille at Argus |
| Era | Booklets 010-026 | Booklets 026-063 |
| Role | Exile vessel, mobile base | Warship, fleet flagship |
| Fate | Abandoned at Argus | Crashed on Arioch |
| Key Commander | Scanner Cloud | Llewellyn 709 |
Where the MIDAS was an unwieldy prototype never meant for rebel service -- seized through desperation and flown by expendable prisoners -- the CYGNI was a purpose-built military vessel. Its transfer to the Terranauts reflected the changing balance of power: Chan de Nouille's decision to give up the ship suggested that even within the Gray Guard hierarchy, some recognized the Terranauts' cause as legitimate -- or at least useful.

Significance
The CYGNI represents the Terranauts' evolution from fugitives to warriors. Where the MIDAS was a vessel of exile and discovery, the CYGNI was a vessel of action and defiance. Its DELTA-class military capabilities enabled the Terranauts to conduct organized fleet operations -- liberating prison worlds, engaging Gray Guard warships, and projecting force across multiple star systems.
The ship also served as the stage for some of the saga's most intense interpersonal dramas:
- The Valhala deception (Booklets 045-046): The CYGNI crew's failure to detect an impostor among them demonstrated the vulnerability of even the most powerful PSI-active Terranauts to sophisticated infiltration.
- The Hate Plague crisis (Booklets 046-047): The CYGNI became a quarantine ship, a battlefield, and a negotiation platform simultaneously, as infected crew, Gray Guard prisoners, and Terranaut leaders struggled for control.
- The crash on Arioch (Booklet 062): The loss of the CYGNI forced diverse survivors -- Terranauts, Gray Guards, and native storm-sailors -- into reluctant cooperation on a deadly world, mirroring the saga's recurring theme that survival transcends faction.
The CYGNI's name itself -- derived from the constellation Cygnus, the Swan -- carries symbolic weight. Where the MIDAS evoked the cursed king whose golden touch destroyed everything he loved, the CYGNI suggests flight, grace, and the ancient association of the swan with both beauty and death.
