Character First: 012 - The Supreme Colonel's Gambit

Ennerk Prime

Status: Active (last seen departing Last Sleep aboard the Collector, Booklet 088)

"Ennerk Prime -- A long-serving Terranaut and experienced Driver. He is short, broad-shouldered, and has a choleric temperament."
-- Character description, Arioch's Inferno (Booklet 062)

Ennerk Prime is a veteran Driver and long-serving member of the Terranauts who appears in 14 booklets of Die Terranauten. First introduced as one of three Drivers witnessing the Gray Guards' galaxy-wide persecution of their kind, Ennerk evolves from a fugitive hiding in the swamps of Yenderson into a hardened resistance fighter who participates in some of the saga's most consequential missions -- from the attempted assassination of Max von Valdec in Berlin to the Sarym exile, the Hate Plague crisis, the crash on Arioch, and the confrontation with the Renegades on Last Sleep.

Ennerk is characterized by his choleric temperament, his physical toughness, and his unfailing reliability in crisis situations. He is described as short and broad-shouldered, impulsive yet resourceful. He is the strongest telepath among his close companions and repeatedly assumes leadership of Driver Lodges when circumstances demand it. His arc across the saga traces the experience of an ordinary Driver caught up in extraordinary events -- not a prophesied hero or a cosmic figure, but a working soldier of the resistance whose persistence and courage keep him alive through fourteen booklets of war, exile, imprisonment, biological warfare, planetary crashes, and alien encounters.

Biography

The Persecution on Yenderson (Booklet 012)

Ennerk Prime first appears in The Supreme Colonel's Gambit, where he is living on Yenderson, a Terran colony in the Capricorn system. When Max von Valdec launches his galaxy-wide pogrom against Drivers, Ennerk witnesses the Gray Guards brutally suppressing a Driver strike on the planet. A local named Aurit had previously shown him the dangers and hiding places in Yenderson's swamps, knowledge that proves critical as Ennerk escapes into the wetlands, fearing for his life. His experience on Yenderson parallels the fates of Suzan Oh, who survives the destruction of her ship the PEKING on Volonder, and Onnegart Vangralen, who watches Drivers being stripped of their PSI abilities on Siam-Sin. All three will later become inseparable companions.

The Commando Raid on Earth (Booklet 024)

By the time of The Starship Thieves, Ennerk has joined the Terranauts and participates in a daring infiltration of Earth. Twelve Terranauts smuggle themselves onto the planet via container ships as part of a coordinated operation to steal Driver ships and strike at the heart of the Council of Corporations. Ennerk and Suzan Oh land near Kosmograd and travel to Berlin, where they use their PSI powers to infiltrate the Council Chambers during a meeting. Their objective is audacious: the assassination of Max von Valdec himself. However, Gray Drivers -- Drivers in the service of the Council -- thwart the attempt, and Ennerk and Suzan are forced to flee. They escape Earth by stowing away on a container ship. Though the assassination fails, the mission is not a total loss: Asen-Ger and other Terranauts successfully steal two Driver ships, the LASSALLE and the GARIBALDI, from a Council base in the Cheviot Hills of Scotland.

The Sabotage on Naria and Capture (Booklet 040)

In A Glitch in the Machine, Ennerk is part of a four-person Terranaut cell -- alongside Suzanne Oh, Onnegart Vangralen, and Lyda Mar -- that successfully plants bombs in a Gray Guards supply depot on Naria, a colonial planet in the inner sector of the Reich. During their escape, they run into an undisrupted shock field and are captured. The Gray Guards Kommandant Cecile Aman interrogates them about David terGorden and a supposed "hypno-block" in their minds, but learns nothing. Aman orders them deported to a penal colony.

The four Terranauts are transported aboard the Kaiser Force courier ship XS-571, crewed by Gray Guards Limur Zeran, Chi Tardas, and Crom Etchgan. Before being put into deep sleep, they send a psionic tracking pulse to the SONNENWIND, a Terranaut ship that follows them into Space II. When the ship's experimental Seeker navigation device malfunctions -- developing a form of consciousness after merging with a Space II "soul complex" -- the Terranauts are awakened and asked to form a Driver Lodge to control the Seeker. Ennerk leads the Lodge as the group's strongest telepath. Lyda Mar establishes a connection with the Seeker's consciousness and anchors a return command, a decision that will have far-reaching consequences.

The ship arrives at the Norvo System, and the Terranauts are transferred to Outpost Station before being transported to Sarym, a prison planet whose sun emits radiation that suppresses PSI abilities.

Exile on Sarym (Booklets 041-044)

The Sarym arc represents the longest continuous stretch of Ennerk's story. In The Emerald World, the four Terranauts are dumped on Sarym's white sandy beach by the Gray Guards. Their PSI abilities are immediately nullified by radiation from the sun Norvo. As the Ringo spacecraft departs, Suzanne Oh becomes trapped by a plant tendril, and Ennerk frees her just before the ship's engine exhaust would have incinerated them -- the first of several moments where his quick, physical action saves a companion's life.

The group is attacked by a massive armored lizard, flees into the forest, and encounters Derb Ransih, a green-skinned Mediator of the native Surinen. Through Ransih, they reach a Surinen village and meet Damon Credock and Aschan Herib, two sane Mediators. Ennerk takes a leadership role, explaining their plan to the Surinen: use a Lodge of Mediators to transmit a contact pattern from Lyda Mar's memory and reach a returning courier ship. When Lyda Mar contracts the deadly "fluorescence mold," it is Ennerk who performs life-saving resuscitation after Damon Credock administers the dangerous "devil's apple" cure.

In The Gatherer, Ennerk accompanies Lyda Mar and Damon Credock on the perilous journey to the Maritime Coral City, a mysterious structure teeming with Dream-hooks. While Lyda and Damon undergo a transcendent merging of minds within the coral city -- during which Aura Damona Mar is conceived and the consciousness of Mar-Estos is encountered -- Ennerk provides the practical muscle. When the Maritime Coral City begins to collapse, it is Ennerk who rescues both Lyda Mar and Damon Credock from the disintegrating structure.

In Breeding Ground of the Hyperdrive, Ennerk, Lyda Mar, and Damon Credock are attacked by robotic floating islands on the ocean and captured. They are taken to a secret Kaiser Corporation research station commanded by Hermano Lotz, where they are subjected to psycho-interrogation to reveal the location of Rorqual, the Terranaut base. Unknown to Ennerk and his companions, genetically engineered super-Drivers -- Phoenix 17, Isis 24, and Prometheus 93 -- sabotage the interrogation from within, while Prometheus manipulates Lotz's mind into devising a virus scheme.

In The Escape Vessel, the situation reaches its darkest point. Ennerk, Lyda Mar, and Onnegart Vangralen are imprisoned and subjected to continued psycho-interrogation. Lotz infects all three with a virus designed to activate upon contact with Llewellyn 709's PSI signature -- the Hate Plague. Lotz then stages a prison break, allowing the Terranauts to escape and unknowingly carry the viral weapon back to their base. During the breakout, Damon Credock is killed. The surviving Terranauts commandeer a Ringo, evade a pursuing vessel from OUTPOST by hiding in an asteroid field, and are intercepted by the Seeker-controlled courier ship that Lyda had previously programmed. They board and escape into Space II, heading for Rorqual -- unaware of the lethal cargo they carry.

Return to Rorqual and the Hate Plague (Booklets 046-049)

In The Ice Devils, Ennerk, Onnegart Vangralen, and Lyda Mar return to Rorqual in the courier ship BERLIN, navigating through a Black Hole gateway. The Kaiser Force drive's threshold field causes a shockwave that awakens something ancient at Rorqual's heart. Worse, the revelation comes that Hermano Lotz orchestrated their entire escape from Sarym: the virus they carry activates upon contact with Llewellyn 709, unleashing the Hate Plague -- a weapon of biological warfare that causes uncontrollable rage and madness, threatening the entire galaxy.

During the Hate Plague crisis (Booklets 047-049), Ennerk serves as a member of the Lodge aboard the BERLIN, supporting operations alongside Altamont O'Hale and Onnegart Vangralen. In The Computer's Ultimatum, he helps Claude Farrell deliver the antidote to the plague-stricken Terranauts on Rorqual and aboard the GARIBALDI, saving Asen-Ger and others.

The Crash on Arioch (Booklet 062)

In Arioch's Inferno, Ennerk and Onnegart Vangralen are aboard the CYGNI when it crashes on Arioch, the hellish twin planet of Sarym. Arioch is a nightmare world: high gravity, a methane-ammonia atmosphere, crystal cyclones, acid hail, and predatory Crystal Devils. Ennerk and Vangralen encounter Han Harian and Goliath, other survivors from the CYGNI, and attempt to reach a crashed Kaiser Force battleship for supplies. They face deadly creatures and the constant environmental threat.

When all survivor groups are forced into uneasy cooperation after the Kaiser Force battleship wreck is destroyed by an earthquake, Ennerk joins the combined party of Terranauts and Gray Guards. Guided by Kuschelmutz, Goliath's PSI-gifted pet, and Oinji, a native storm-sailor, they discover a coral city beneath Arioch's surface with a breathable atmosphere and the planet's PSI-Aura. During this journey, Gunther V. dies and reveals his connection to Max von Valdec, and Larissa Wong is killed by Crystal Devils. The survivors ultimately encounter Suzanne Oh and Aschan Herib near the PSI-Aura.

The Nameless Planet and the Renegades (Booklets 087-088)

Ennerk's final confirmed appearances are in the late saga. In Labyrinth of Dread, he is among the group of stranded Drivers -- alongside Ariane terWilson, Goliath, Onnegart Vangralen, and three rogue Gray Guards led by Maron Lumis -- who rescue David terGorden and Narda from the native Klippenstuerzer on a nameless planet. When Kadir, the Klippenstuerzer leader, captures Narda and plans to send her into the Traumstatt (a plant labyrinth imprisoning insane Renegades), Ennerk joins the rescue party. David enters the Traumstatt alone, communicates with the Sleep Guardian, and convinces it to stop transmitting a disabling signal -- but this also awakens the Renegades.

In The Exile Planet, the crisis escalates. The Renegades -- insane Buds of the Tree -- awaken and begin possessing Terranauts. Ennerk is among the group traveling with David as they navigate the treacherous landscape of Last Sleep, encountering hostile life forms and pursuing Renegades. Schoen-Duft, a Bud of the Tree, ultimately sacrifices herself to initiate a metamorphosis in the Renegades, transforming them back into a World Tree and averting an entropy catastrophe. Aura Damona Mar regains control of the Collector, and Ennerk departs Last Sleep with David and the surviving Terranauts, heading for the "Old Forest."

Notes

The "Ennerk, Han!" Command. A PSI command -- "Ennerk, Han!" -- appears in the saga as a directive to focus PSI power on a single point. Whether this command is named after Ennerk Prime or whether it is a term from Driver Lodge tradition that Ennerk shares by coincidence is not clarified in the text. The association suggests that Ennerk's reputation as the strongest telepath in his group may extend to a broader recognition within Driver culture.

A Survivor's Arc. Ennerk Prime's 14-booklet span is notable for its consistency of role rather than dramatic transformation. Unlike David terGorden, who progresses from fugitive to Lord Colonel to cosmic savior, or Lyda Mar, who evolves from Driver to Mediator to oracle, Ennerk remains what he was from the beginning: a competent, tough, reliable Driver who does what needs to be done. He leads Lodges when leadership is needed, rescues companions when they fall, fights when fighting is required, and endures when endurance is the only option. In a saga populated by prophesied heroes and cosmic beings, Ennerk represents the ordinary Terranaut whose persistence makes the extraordinary possible.

Choleric Temperament. Multiple booklets describe Ennerk as choleric -- quick to anger, impulsive in action, prone to sharp reactions. This temperament is presented not as a flaw but as a survival mechanism. On Sarym, where PSI abilities are suppressed and the environment is lethal, physical decisiveness matters more than psionic subtlety. On Arioch, where the atmosphere is methane-ammonia and Crystal Devils materialize without warning, hesitation means death. Ennerk's temperament suits the worlds the saga places him in.

The Hate Plague Victim. Ennerk's infection with the Hate Plague on Sarym -- orchestrated by Hermano Lotz as part of a calculated biological warfare scheme -- is one of the saga's darkest moments of victimization. Ennerk, Lyda Mar, and Onnegart Vangralen are not merely captured and imprisoned; they are weaponized. Their bodies become delivery systems for a virus designed to destroy their own people. The staged prison break that allows their escape is itself an act of cruelty disguised as mercy. That Ennerk survives this betrayal, receives the antidote, and continues to fight for the Terranauts across the remainder of the saga speaks to the resilience that defines his character.
