Damon Credock

Status: Deceased -- killed during staged prison break from Hermano Lotz's research station (Issue 044)

"A Surine and Mediator who is a leader in his village. He is intelligent, compassionate, and helps Lyda develop her Mediator abilities."
-- Description from Booklet 041

Damon Credock is a Surine Mediator who appears in 4 booklets of Die Terranauten and whose posthumous presence echoes through several more. A village leader on the prison planet Sarym, Credock played a pivotal role in the Terranauts' early survival on the emerald world, trained Lyda Mar in the Mediator gift, and fathered Aura Damona Mar -- one of the saga's most important figures. His death during a staged escape from Hermano Lotz's secret research station is one of the earliest and most consequential losses suffered by the Terranauts on Sarym, and his legacy reverberates through the PSI-aura of the Maritime Coral City long after his physical death.

Biography

Life on Sarym

Damon Credock was born on December 2, 2499, on Sarym -- the emerald prison planet in the Norvo System known to its native inhabitants as Surin. The Surinen were descendants of exiled humans who had adapted to the planet's unique bio-psionic ecology over generations. Among them, a rare few possessed the gift of the Mediator -- the ability to communicate with and influence the planet's variable plant life through Bio-PSI, a psionic channel distinct from the conventional PSI abilities that the radiation of the sun Norvo suppressed on Sarym's surface.

Credock was one of these rare Mediators and had risen to a position of leadership within his village on the North Continent. He was known for his intelligence, compassion, and deep understanding of the Mediator gift. Together with his close associate Aschan Herib, another Mediator of a more introspective and philosophical temperament, Credock served as one of the guiding figures of his community. They stood in contrast to the mentally unstable Derb Ransih, a third Mediator whose abilities were genuine but whose mind had been eroded by the planet's dangers.

The Arrival of the Terranauts

Credock's life changed irrevocably when four exiled Terranauts -- Lyda Mar, Ennerk Prime, Suzanne Oh, and Onnegart Vangralen -- were dumped on the shores of Sarym by Gray Guards aboard the Ringo during the events of 041 - The Emerald World. Stripped of their conventional PSI abilities by Norvo's radiation, the Terranauts were helpless on the alien world until they encountered Ransih, who led them to the Surine village where they met Credock and Herib.

Credock quickly grasped the significance of the Terranauts' presence and the opportunity it represented. Ennerk Prime explained their plan: to form a Lodge of Mediators powerful enough to transmit a contact pattern from Lyda Mar's memory to a returning courier ship, thereby calling for rescue and breaking their exile. Credock and Herib agreed to help, but explained that their village lacked sufficient Mediators to form a Lodge. They proposed presenting the Terranauts' case at a general assembly of all Surinen on the planet.

During the preparations for the assembly, Credock took a personal interest in Lyda Mar, recognizing that she possessed latent Mediator potential. He began training her to develop these abilities -- a decision that would prove far more consequential than either of them could have foreseen. When a villager named Marc disappeared under mysterious circumstances -- his footprints simply ending in the middle of the forest -- Credock and Herib investigated, connecting the disappearance to a legend about the Maritime Coral City on the southern continent.

As the group traveled to the general assembly, Lyda contracted the deadly Fluorescence Mold, a parasite that threatened to kill her within hours. Credock acted decisively, administering a "devil's apple" -- a fruit containing a toxin lethal enough to destroy the mold but also dangerous enough to kill its host. Through Credock's careful administration of the remedy and Ennerk Prime's life-saving resuscitation, Lyda survived. This act of desperate courage deepened the bond between Credock and Lyda that would soon lead to far more profound consequences.

At the general assembly, the respected Surine Orrogan Gelot argued against any attempt to leave the planet, challenging the Terranauts to first investigate the legendary Maritime Coral City before the Surinen would consider helping them. This challenge set the stage for the journey that would define Credock's legacy.

The Maritime Coral City and the Conception of Aura Damona Mar

In 042 - The Gatherer, Credock, Lyda Mar, Ennerk Prime, and Aschan Herib set out across Sarym toward the Maritime Coral City to investigate the disappearances and to seek a way to contact the courier ship. The journey was perilous: they were separated from Suzanne Oh and Onnegart Vangralen by an attack from Dream-hooks, and encountered hostile creatures including Surin-rats and a monstrous plant with hypnotic buds.

During the journey, Credock continued to encourage Lyda in her development as a Mediator, even as she resisted her emerging abilities. When they were attacked by Dream-hooks, something extraordinary occurred: their minds merged in a shared psionic vision. This experience catalyzed Lyda's transformation -- she connected with the Water-lily Jellyfish, enormous organic creatures used as boats, and became a true Mediator.

Upon reaching the Maritime Coral City -- a vast coral structure teeming with Dream-hooks that served as the central control element for Sarym's Bio-PSI system -- Credock and Lyda entered a trance together. Using Dream-hooks to synchronize their consciousnesses with the ancient presence dwelling in the coral city, they merged their minds at the deepest level. In this profound psionic union, they encountered the consciousness of Mar-Estos, a former self of Llewellyn 709, and learned of the PSI-experiments being conducted by Hermano Lotz at a secret Gray station on Sarym. During this merging, Aura Damona Mar was conceived -- not merely biologically, but within the very fabric of the PSI-aura itself. Ennerk Prime rescued them both when the Maritime Coral City began to collapse around them.

This conception within the PSI-aura would imbue their daughter with abilities far beyond those of any ordinary Mediator or Driver -- making Aura Damona Mar one of the most extraordinary beings in the saga.

Capture and Death

In 043 - Breeding Ground of the Hyperdrive, Credock, Lyda Mar, and Ennerk Prime were attacked by robotic floating islands while traveling across Sarym. They dived underwater to escape but surfaced directly in the midst of their captors and were seized. They were taken to the Kaiser Secret Station, a secret research installation commanded by Hermano Lotz and his cyborg assistant Dor Masali, where Credock was described as "a Surinen intermediary and Mediator" -- one of the prisoners subjected to interrogation to reveal the location of Rorqual, the Terranaut base.

Inside the station, the situation was more complex than it appeared. Genetically engineered super-Drivers -- Phoenix 17, Isis 24, and Prometheus 93 -- secretly manipulated events from within, sabotaging Lotz's interrogation by overloading the psycho-hood device and freeing the Terranauts from their mental blocks. The Terranauts briefly escaped their cell but were recaptured after a fight.

The end came in 044 - The Escape Vessel. Lotz devised a diabolical plan: he infected the imprisoned Terranauts with a virus -- the Hate Plague -- designed to activate upon contact with Llewellyn 709's PSI signature at the Terranaut base. He then orchestrated a staged prison break, allowing the Terranauts to fight their way out so they would unwittingly carry the virus to Rorqual. During this chaotic escape, Damon Credock was killed. The story describes him as "Lyda Mar's love interest" who "dies during the escape" -- a brief notation for a loss that would cast a long shadow over the saga.

The surviving Terranauts -- Lyda Mar, Ennerk Prime, and Onnegart Vangralen -- commandeered a Ringo and fled Sarym, unaware of both the viral weapon they carried and the full weight of what they had lost. A fellow Surine prisoner, Rian Aschmat, also died helping them escape.

Posthumous Presence in the PSI-Aura

Though Damon Credock died physically, his echo endured within the PSI-aura of the Maritime Coral City -- a consequence of the deep psionic merging he had undergone there with Lyda Mar. This echo was not merely a memory but a persistent presence within the bio-psionic field of Sarym.

In 061 - Death Awaits on Sarym, set in 2503, Lyda Mar returned to the Maritime Coral City and entered its PSI-aura. There she connected with Credock's lingering presence alongside their unborn daughter, Aura Damona Mar. The booklet explicitly lists him as "Deceased father of Aura Damona Mar, whose echo remains in the PSI aura." This connection -- the family reunited within the psionic field -- enabled Lyda to learn of the approaching dangers: the Great Ebb and the release of Dream-hooks programmed to spread chaos across Sarym.

A geographical memorial also persists on Sarym: Mount Credock, an extinct volcano, bears his name -- a testament to the mark he left on the planet and its people.

Legacy

Damon Credock's life was brief but its consequences were immense. In a span of only four booklets, he transformed Lyda Mar from a powerless exile into a true Mediator, fathered one of the saga's most pivotal characters, and contributed to the discovery of Sarym's deepest secrets within the Maritime Coral City. His death during the escape from Lotz's station -- itself part of a calculated scheme to weaponize the Terranauts with the Hate Plague -- stands as one of the early tragedies of the Sarym arc, a reminder that the struggle against the Council of Corporations and Max von Valdec exacted real costs from real people.

Yet Credock's influence did not end with his death. His echo in the PSI-aura of the Maritime Coral City allowed a form of continued existence, and his Mediator heritage was passed in full -- and then surpassed -- by his daughter Aura Damona Mar, who became an Oracle capable of growing living spaceships, interfacing with the ancient Collector ships of the Buds of the Tree, and guiding David terGorden on his cosmic journey to reactivate the Long Row. The geographical feature Mount Credock, an extinct volcano on Sarym, bears his name as a further memorial.

In a saga where many characters endure across dozens of booklets, Damon Credock's concentrated arc demonstrates how a short life, lived at a critical juncture and in the right place, can shape events far beyond its span. He was the catalyst that turned Lyda Mar into the oracle of the Maritime Coral City, and the father of the child who would bridge the gap between humanity and the primordial plant intelligences of the cosmos.

Notes

  • The character's name appears in three variant spellings across the vault: Damon Credock, Dämon Credock, and simply Credock. All refer to the same individual. The German umlaut form "Dämon" (which means "demon" in German) may be the original intended spelling, adding an ironic layer to a character defined by compassion and selflessness.
  • His daughter's middle name, Damona, is a feminized form of his first name -- a naming convention that ensures his memory is carried forward every time Aura Damona Mar is mentioned.
  • The Maritime Coral City, where Credock's most significant acts took place, continues to be a central location throughout the saga, serving as the seat of the PSI-aura and the dwelling of Lyda Mar and Aura Damona Mar.
  • In 083 - Chaos Over Sarym, Aura Damona is described as "the daughter of Lyda Mar and Damon Cradock" (with a variant spelling "Cradock"), confirming the lineage across multiple booklets.
