Arioch

"A hellish planet with high gravity, methane-ammonia atmosphere, crystal cyclones, and dangerous creatures."
-- Location description, Arioch's Inferno (Booklet 062)

Arioch is a giant planet in the Norvo System that orbits a common center of gravity with Sarym, forming a double-planet system. Known variously as the "demon planet" and a "hell-world," Arioch is one of the most hostile environments encountered in the saga of Die Terranauten. With its crushing gravity, methane-ammonia atmosphere, crystal cyclones, volcanic eruptions, and predatory fauna, Arioch stands in stark contrast to its verdant twin Sarym -- yet the two worlds are bound together not only by gravity but by the system-spanning PSI-Net that connects their bio-psionic ecosystems.

Arioch is the setting for one of the saga's most harrowing survival narratives, in which crashed Terranauts, Gray Guards, and native storm-sailors are forced into uneasy cooperation against a planet that seeks to kill them all. It is also the homeworld of the Hurricane Sailers (Orkansegler), the native species from which the organic Collectors were originally created.

Physical Description

Arioch is a massive world characterized by extreme environmental hostility. Its key physical features include:

  • High gravity -- Significantly greater than Earth-standard, placing enormous physical strain on human visitors and making movement and survival exhausting
  • Methane-ammonia atmosphere -- Unbreathable to humans, requiring oxygen capsules or other life support; oxygen supplies running critically low is a recurring danger for stranded characters
  • Crystal cyclones (Kristallzyklonen) -- Violent storms that smooth the planet's rock formations and spawn deadly Crystal Devils, conical structures of crystal-like material that blaze in all the colors of the spectrum and kill on contact
  • Acid hail -- Corrosive precipitation capable of killing exposed individuals; Urs Ursus is killed by acid hail during the Arioch survival arc
  • Volcanic activity -- The planet features active volcanoes, including the Feuerberg (Fire Mountain), which emits deadly noble gases called Gas Cores. An earthquake and volcanic eruption destroy the Kaiser Force Battleship Wreck during the events of Booklet 062
  • Dust-sand terrain -- Much of Arioch's surface is covered in dust-sand harboring Sand-Runners, snake-like predatory creatures

The planet's day is referred to as an Ariochtag and is described as extremely harsh. Arioch also possesses a radiation belt that ships must pass through when approaching the planet.

Notable Geographic Features

The PSI-Aura and the Source

Despite its hostile surface, Arioch is connected to the same bio-psionic network as its twin Sarym. The planet possesses its own PSI-Aura, also called the Source (Quell), a mysterious energy aura that permeates the underground Coral City and sustains the native Hurricane Sailers.

The Source has transformative properties. In Booklet 042, the PSI-parasite Oinji is caught in a crystal cyclone and saved by rolling into a niche near the Source, where he is transformed into a demigod-like being with vastly enhanced abilities. The Source is linked to the broader PSI-Net that spans the Norvo System, and disturbances to the PSI-Net -- such as those caused by Max von Valdec's attempts to control the Maritime Coral City on Sarym -- have direct consequences on Arioch.

The PSI-Net emanating from the Arioch/Sarym system also functions as a defensive mechanism: it causes ships to crash when they approach. The CYGNI, the MADRID, and a Kaiser Force battleship were all brought down by the PSI-Net's interference, and a Ringo spacecraft launched from the Kaiser Force battleship wreck exploded upon attempting to leave the planet's surface due to the PSI-Net's influence.

Native Life

Hurricane Sailers (Orkansegler)

The dominant native species of Arioch are the Hurricane Sailers (Orkansegler Ariochs), winged storm-riding creatures adapted to the planet's brutal atmospheric conditions. The Hurricane Sailers are PSI-active beings who draw sustenance from the Source and ride the violent planetary storms. They are organized into tribal structures.

The Hurricane Sailers are significant beyond Arioch itself: the organic Collectors, the deep-space probes of the Buds of the Tree, were originally created from these creatures. This connection places Arioch at the center of the ancient bio-psionic civilization that once spanned the galaxy.

Other Fauna

  • Crystal Devils -- Conical formations of crystal-like material that appear during crystal cyclones, blazing in spectral colors; they are lethal to humans and are responsible for the deaths of Valentin Claudius and Larissa Wong
  • Sand-Runners -- Snake-like creatures that live in the dust-sand and attack surface installations
  • Gas Cores (Gaskerne) -- Deadly noble gas emissions from volcanic activity
  • Collector -- A large organic creature (or ship) encountered in the space between Sarym and Arioch

History in the Saga

The Source and Oinji's Transformation (Booklet 042)

Arioch first appears as a setting in The Gatherer, where the PSI-parasite Oinji undergoes a transformative encounter with the Source. Caught in a crystal cyclone, Oinji is saved by the proximity of the Source's energy and is elevated to a demigod-like state. This transformation establishes both the Source's power and Oinji's significance as a recurring character tied to Arioch's destiny.

The Double-Planet System (Booklet 044)

In The Escape Vessel, Arioch is referenced as the twin planet to Sarym, establishing the double-planet system that defines the orbital mechanics of the Norvo System's innermost worlds. The secret research station on Sarym where the Terranauts are imprisoned exists in proximity to Arioch, and the two worlds share a gravitational and psionic bond.

The Crash on Arioch (Booklets 061-062)

The central Arioch narrative unfolds across two booklets. In Death Awaits on Sarym (set in 2503), the Maritime Coral City on Sarym generates a PSI response that creates a field disabling ships in orbit. The CYGNI -- the Terranauts' flagship carrying David terGorden, Lyda Mar, and Llewellyn 709 -- and a pursuing Gray Guard vessel are both pulled down and crash on Arioch. David, Lyda, and Llewellyn escape in separate capsules; David is captured by Max von Valdec's forces on Sarym, while the others crash-land.

In Arioch's Inferno, the full horror of Arioch is revealed. Multiple groups of survivors are stranded on the planet:

The narrative follows these groups as they struggle against the environment and each other. Urs Ursus is killed by acid hail. The Kaiser Force battleship wreck launches a Ringo to seek help, but it explodes due to the PSI-Net. The battleship is then destroyed by an earthquake and volcanic eruption. Larissa Wong is killed by Crystal Devils.

With all options exhausted, the survivors -- Terranauts and Gray Guards alike -- are forced into cooperation. Guided by Kuschelmutz's PSI abilities and the native storm-sailor Oinji (who believes the Terranauts can help him restore the Source), they discover the Coral City of Arioch, an underground refuge with a breathable atmosphere and the planet's PSI-Aura. During this journey, Gunther V. dies and reveals he is a nephew of Max von Valdec. At the PSI-Aura, the survivors encounter Suzanne Oh and Aschan Herib, who had been transported to Arioch years earlier by a petrified Yggdrasil tree.

The War of Minds (Booklet 063)

In War of Minds, the aftermath of the Arioch crash is referenced. The CYGNI and MADRID are noted as having crashed on Arioch "due to the switching of the PSI-network," confirming that the crashes were a consequence of the larger battle for control of the PSI-Aura between the Terranauts and Valdec's super-Drivers on Sarym. The events on Arioch are thus directly connected to the war for Sarym's coral cities.

Chaos Over Sarym (Booklet 083)

Set in 2504, Chaos Over Sarym returns to Arioch. Oinji, now a Hurricane Sailer accompanied by Kuschelmutz (described as an Alien-Alien), observes the changing PSI-Net and the emergence of Change Seeds -- modified versions of Hurricane Sailer wings that carry no body. These Change Seeds are part of the Modification Submatrix, an ancient program causing the Norvo System to isolate itself.

Oinji attempts to rescue a fellow Hurricane Sailer from the Change Seeds but is himself infected. He and his tribe retreat to the Windless Desert seeking refuge, but face further dangers: a Crystal Devil and the silencing of the Source. Oinji's tribe is decimated by the Change Seeds and a Zone-without-Power. Kuschelmutz sacrifices himself to save Oinji. The crisis on Arioch mirrors and parallels the Cosmic Spore crisis simultaneously afflicting Sarym and the TAMERLAN freighter.

The Gene-Parasites (Booklet 084)

In The Gene-Parasites, the legacy of Arioch's Change Seeds becomes critical. The Collector -- the organic spaceship carrying David terGorden, Narda, and Aura Damona Mar -- has absorbed Change Seeds that mutated due to radiation from Arioch into dangerous Gene-Parasites. These parasites cause uncontrolled cell growth and tissue death within the Collector, threatening to kill the ship and everyone aboard while in Space II. The crisis is ultimately resolved when David and Narda awaken the Weltenbaum on the Solitary Wanderer, empowering Aura Damona Mar to regain control and eliminate the parasites.

Significance

Arioch serves multiple narrative functions in the saga of Die Terranauten:

As a crucible of cooperation. The survival arc on Arioch (Booklet 062) is one of the saga's most powerful demonstrations of the theme that shared hardship transcends factional loyalty. Terranauts and Gray Guards who would kill each other under normal circumstances are forced to work together, eat together, and die together on Arioch's lethal surface. The planet strips away ideology and leaves only the fundamental question of survival.

As a mirror to Sarym. Where Sarym is green, temperate, and nurturing -- a world that suppresses conventional PSI but enables deeper bio-psionic connections -- Arioch is barren, hostile, and deadly. Yet both worlds are connected by the same PSI-Net, both possess coral cities and PSI-Auras, and both are products of the Buds of the Tree's ancient bio-engineering. Arioch represents the dark twin, the destructive potential inherent in the same forces that make Sarym a paradise.

As a source of cosmic biology. The Hurricane Sailers of Arioch are the progenitors of the Collectors, the organic deep-space vessels that serve as probes and transports for the PSI-network. The Change Seeds that originate from Arioch's ecosystem become the Gene-Parasites that nearly destroy the Collector in Booklet 084. Arioch's biology ripples outward through the saga, affecting events far beyond the planet's surface.

As a graveyard of ships. The CYGNI, the MADRID, and a Kaiser Force battleship all meet their end on Arioch, making it a ship graveyard whose wreckage dots the landscape. The loss of the CYGNI -- the Terranauts' flagship from Booklet 026 through 063 -- is particularly significant, marking the end of an era in the Terranaut resistance.

Arioch appears in 7 booklets of Die Terranauten (042, 044, 061, 062, 063, 083, 084). It is the saga's most hostile planetary environment and the site of one of its most compelling survival narratives -- a hell-world that forces enemies into cooperation, harbors ancient biological secrets, and serves as the dark mirror to its verdant twin Sarym.
