Aqua

"A water world and colonial planet that has declared independence from the Council."
-- Narrative description, The Renegade (Booklet 034)

Aqua is a water world and colonial planet located in the Vishnu System, at the edge of human-settled space. Predominantly covered by ocean, with scattered Aquan islands and tidal cities protected by Protop domes, Aqua is the first colonial world to throw off Council control entirely. It subsequently becomes the founding member and administrative capital of the League of Free Worlds, housing the Council Assembly of the League, the Defense Committee of the League, and the Planetary Office. The Terranauts also establish a major base on the planet.

Aqua's liberation -- led by Argan Pronk and supported by the Terranauts under Llewellyn 709 -- is one of the saga's pivotal moments, setting in motion the political resistance movement that reshapes the balance of power across the Star Empire of Humanity.

Physical Description

A Water World

Aqua is an ocean planet. Its surface is overwhelmingly covered by water, earning it the name that defines it. Solid landmasses are limited to scattered Aquan islands and the Red Islands, an archipelago that the city of Miramar seeks to develop. The planet's geography is shaped by powerful tides driven by its moon, Poona, whose gravitational influence causes the seas around Middlehaven to rise and fall dramatically -- at times submerging the capital city itself.

The planet possesses "unique geomorphic peculiarities" (Booklet 039) that distinguish it from other colonial worlds. Its underwater terrain is home to dangerous fauna, including snake-sharks -- predatory creatures that circle the submerged sections of Middlehaven and patrol the open waters.

Cities Under Domes

Aqua's cities are built within protective Protop domes that shield their inhabitants from the ocean environment. Protop, a living bio-material used extensively across the Star Empire of Humanity, is the fundamental construction material on Aqua -- used for domes, walls, walkways, and underwater structures. The dependence on Protop for survival makes control of its supply a matter of existential importance for every settlement on the planet.

The planet's major cities include:

Native Flora and Fauna

Aqua's unique biosphere includes several species of significance:

  • Hibernien -- A lily-like plant native to Aqua with red blossoms. Hibernien flowers produce strong PSI emanations and have hallucinogenic properties. They are harvested for the production of Hl and play a decisive role in the liberation of the planet (Booklet 033). A specialist rank, Hibernienmeister, exists for those who cultivate and handle the plants.
  • Snakesharks (German: Schlangenhaie) -- Predatory aquatic creatures that inhabit the waters surrounding Middlehaven and other submerged areas. They pose a lethal threat to anyone breaching the Protop domes or traveling through open water. Gunther V. and Urs Ursus had to fight through snake-sharks during their prison escape (Booklet 033).

History

Council Era

Under the Council of Corporations, Aqua is governed by Saul Khoman, a governor loyal to the Council. Khoman administers the planet from Middlehaven, supported by a garrison of Gray Guards under Queen Leah Halef. The Council's rule is characterized by the exploitation of colonial resources, the persecution of Drivers, and the use of Protop supply as a tool of political control.

During this period, Drivers are systematically imprisoned on Aqua as part of Max von Valdec's galaxy-wide crackdown following the destruction of Zoe (Booklet 012). Gunther V., a Driver with telekinetic abilities, is held for over a year in a Protop-walled cell submerged beneath the ocean, along with his cellmate Urs Ursus (Booklet 033). Valentin Claudius, a Lodge Master, is also held in custody on the planet before being freed and later arrested again on Tamerlan (Booklet 034).

The Liberation of Aqua (Booklet 033)

The rebellion that frees Aqua from Council control begins with a dispute over Protop. Governor Saul Khoman withholds Protop cultures needed for expanding Miramar's protective dome, citing disruptions caused by the Drivers. Argan Pronk, the mayor of Miramar, suspects Khoman of hoarding the Protop for Middlehaven and travels to the capital to confront him.

Khoman responds by calling in Queen Leah Halef of the Gray Guards, who arrests Argan Pronk for treason. Willem Thergaard is appointed acting mayor of Miramar but secretly contacts Thai Memleb, the finance master, who declares an uprising and seeks support from other cities.

Simultaneously, the TASCA, a Driver ship commanded by Llewellyn 709 and Mandorla, arrives in the Vishnu System on a mission designated "PSI-Search" -- the liberation of imprisoned Drivers. Roglan Alessandr, a Driver with powerful PSI detection abilities, locates Gunther V. and Urs Ursus, who have just escaped their flooded cell through Gunther's telekinetic dissolution of the Protop wall. The Terranauts rescue them.

The rebellion escalates when the Gray Guards send combat gliders against Miramar. The Terranauts deploy a decisive countermeasure: Roglan Alessandr amplifies the psionic emanations of the native Hibernien plants, driving the Gray Guard pilots mad and causing their gliders to crash. This victory inspires a full-scale uprising across Aqua. The combined rebel forces -- citizens of Miramar and allied cities, supported by the Terranauts -- launch an assault on Middlehaven, breaching the capital's Protop dome walls with Protop-Ex, a substance that destroys Protop.

Recognizing the hopelessness of her position, Queen Leah Halef capitulates and withdraws the Gray Guards. Aqua becomes the first colonial world to completely throw off Council control.

Founding of the League of Free Worlds (Booklet 034)

With Aqua free, Argan Pronk -- now the planet's governor -- leads a diplomatic delegation aboard the TASCA to Tamerlan, a heavily industrialized world in the Brahma System. There, Pronk meets President Fedor Temudschin and Edison Tontor, the GeneralManag of the Consolidated Tontor Corporation. After Tontor uses the Gravitron to destroy Gray Guard installations and seize control of Tamerlan, Argan Pronk and Fedor Temudschin formally establish the League of Free Worlds -- a political alliance between Aqua and Tamerlan, open to any colonial world seeking independence from the Council.

Aqua becomes the League's administrative capital, with Middlehaven serving as the seat of the Council Assembly of the League and other governing institutions.

Terranaut Base Construction (Booklet 039)

Following the League's formation, the Terranauts establish a new base on Aqua, integrating their operations with the League's infrastructure. David terGorden visits the planet to discuss cooperation with Argan Pronk and observes the base construction in progress. Narda, an old comrade, arrives on Aqua around the same time. Pronk, now holding the title of Second Representative of the League (with Edison Tontor as First Representative), is described as "more interested in the well-being of his planet than galactic conquest" -- a pragmatism that contrasts with Tontor's aggressive ambitions.

Safe Haven for Refugees (Booklets 038, 051)

Aqua serves as a beacon of hope for those fleeing Council persecution:

  • Narda's arrival (Booklet 038): After a harrowing journey across the Star Empire of Humanity aboard the SONNENWIND -- losing companions to violence, betrayal, and exhaustion -- the sixteen-year-old PSI-girl Narda leads her Driver Lodge into Space II without a mistletoe, guided by sheer determination and a vision of Aqua. The SONNENWIND arrives on the planet, where Narda is reunited with David terGorden.
  • Evacuation from Rorqual (Booklet 051): As conditions on Rorqual deteriorate -- with wars erupting and the dimensional gate threatening to close -- ships such as the GARIBALDI evacuate people from Pitcairn to Aqua. The TASCA arrives from Aqua with news that "everything was ready for the reception of the emigrants," confirming the planet's role as the League's primary refuge.

Administrative Capital of the League (Booklet 082)

By the time of The Mistletoe Conspiracy (Booklet 082), Aqua is firmly established as the "administrative metropolis of the League of Free Worlds" and the location of the Council Assembly. The planet's institutions include:

Aqua's centrality to League governance is demonstrated when Umpathar Floglyn, the ambassador from Donnar, departs from Aqua carrying eight mistletoes crucial for his homeworld's presidential campaign. The theft of these mistletoes -- orchestrated by Edison Tontor's resurrected Id operating through the body of Kirju Haapala -- prompts the Defense Committee to investigate the Mistel Syndicate, underscoring Aqua's role as the nerve center of League operations.

Strategic Significance

Aqua's importance extends far beyond its status as a single colonial world:

  1. Political capital: As the seat of the Council Assembly of the League, Aqua is the decision-making center for the principal opposition to the Council of Corporations and, later, to Max von Valdec's Second Reich of Humanity.
  1. Military hub: The Terranauts base on Aqua, combined with the League's Armist forces, makes the planet a staging ground for military operations across the Outer Sector.
  1. Mistletoe distribution: The League's Planetary Office, based on Aqua, coordinates the distribution of mistletoes -- the critical resource for Driver-navigated Space II travel -- across member worlds.
  1. Refugee destination: Aqua receives evacuees from Rorqual (Booklet 051) and serves as a destination for fleeing Drivers and resistance fighters from across the Star Empire of Humanity (Booklet 038).
  1. Symbol of resistance: As the first colonial world to overthrow Council rule entirely, Aqua embodies the possibility of successful rebellion. Its example inspires other worlds to join the League of Free Worlds.

Technology and Materials

Aqua's civilization depends heavily on several key technologies:

  • Protop -- The living bio-material used for domes, walls, and underwater construction. Control of Protop supply is a matter of survival on Aqua and was the catalyst for the rebellion (Booklet 033).
  • Protop-Ex -- A substance that destroys Protop. Used by the rebels to breach Middlehaven's dome walls during the liberation.
  • Hibernien -- Native flora with psionic properties. The Terranauts weaponized Hibernien emanations to incapacitate Gray Guard forces during the battle for Aqua.

Themes

Water and Freedom. Aqua's identity as a water world -- fluid, borderless, ungovernable by conventional means -- mirrors its role in the saga as the birthplace of political liberation. The Council's attempt to control Aqua through Protop supply and Gray Guard garrisons fails precisely because the planet's nature resists rigid control. The tides that submerge and reveal Middlehaven suggest a world in constant motion, resistant to the static hierarchies the Council seeks to impose.

Resource as Weapon. The rebellion on Aqua begins not with ideology but with Protop -- a construction material. Governor Saul Khoman's withholding of Protop cultures from Miramar transforms a supply dispute into a political crisis. This pattern -- resources as the trigger for revolution -- recurs throughout the saga, from Mistletoe distribution to Kaiser Force technology.

The Colony That Became a Capital. Aqua's trajectory from exploited colonial outpost to administrative capital of the League of Free Worlds is one of the saga's most complete political arcs. What begins as a local uprising in Booklet 033 grows into the institutional framework for an interstellar counter-government by Booklet 082 -- a transformation driven by Argan Pronk's pragmatic leadership and the Terranauts' military support.
