"Rollo initially doubts her, but eventually agrees."
-- On Rollo's decision to follow Narda's escape plan on Taschkanur (Booklet 037)
Rollo is a Driver from the Deneb-System, a heavyset, bald member of Asen-Ger's Lodge, and one of David terGorden's most steadfast companions during the early saga. From the insurrection on Terra through the escape from Zoe, and finally through imprisonment and death far from home, Rollo's story is one of quiet loyalty, physical courage, and tragic sacrifice. He appears in at least eight booklets of Die Terranauten, and his death on El'ait is one of the devastating losses that defines Narda's transformation from captive girl to galactic leader.
Biography
Origins
Rollo hails from the Deneb-System, making him one of the few Drivers in Asen-Ger's Lodge born outside the Sol system. He is consistently described as portly, heavyset, and bald-headed -- a physically imposing figure whose bulk belies a warm and loyal temperament. He is also noted as a skilled pilot (Booklet 037). His nickname for Queen Skytha, the Gray Guard commander loyal to Growan terGorden, is "Killerqueen" -- a detail that hints at Rollo's irreverent humor even in dangerous circumstances.
Member of Asen-Ger's Lodge (2499)
Rollo first appears as a Driver in Asen-Ger's Lodge during the political upheaval that precedes the Terranaut insurrection. When Max von Valdec orchestrates the persecution of the Drivers, accusing them of sabotaging the Kaiser Force demonstration and ordering the Gray Guards to take them into "protective custody," Rollo is among the Drivers who flee Ultima Thule alongside David terGorden, Llewellyn 709, Narda, Greeny, Whity, and Lithe (Booklets 003-004).
He is part of the core group aboard the Razzo spacecraft piloted by Norwy van Dyne, which escapes Earth under fire from the Gray Guards. When the group seizes the FENRISWOLF, a Driver ship rented by Feodor Kalinin, Rollo travels with them to ZOE, the planet of the Lodge Masters, where the Drivers seek support against Valdec's regime (Booklet 005).
The Defense of Yggdrasil and Escape from Greenland (2500)
After the Drivers crash-land in Greenland, Rollo participates in the desperate defense of Yggdrasil against the Gray Guards. When Valdec's forces launch a gas attack on Odrodir (Holy Valley), Rollo is among the small group -- alongside David terGorden, Narda, Greeny, and Whity -- that flees to Merlin's glider hangar. Lithe appears with instructions for David to flee to Rorqual with the seeds of Yggdrasil, while Asen-Ger and the Super-Lodge create illusions of fleeing Driver ships to cover their escape (Booklet 007).
The group escapes the Holy Valley in a magnetic glider, guided by the telepathic powers of the Drivers as Asen-Ger's Super-Lodge generates illusions to confuse the pursuing Gray Guard gliders. When Fay Gray, aboard the combat ship FUGGER, detects their escape and orders an attack, David uses his Driver powers to escape into Space II. They are guided to Rorqual, where David delivers the medallion containing Yggdrasil's seed to a mysterious girl. Yggdrasil then returns the group to Earth, where they crash-land in northern Canada (Booklet 008).
From Canada, the group makes its way to New Berlin, where David attempts to sabotage Valdec's Kaiser Force transmitter. The mission goes wrong: David is captured, but Rollo and the other companions escape in a Ringo when Valdec double-crosses David at the airfield (Booklet 008).
The Battle for Zoe (2500)
When David terGorden escapes the Gray Guards in the asteroid belt, the MILAN, captained by Hadersen Wells, rescues him. Rollo is among the crew, alongside Narda, Greeny, and Whity. The ship flees to Zoe, where the Drivers regroup and attempt to negotiate with the Council of Corporations (Booklet 011).
During the political crisis on Earth, when Valdec dissolves the Council Assembly and reveals the MIDAS II Kaiser Force ship, Asen-Ger is captured. In a critical act of courage, Rollo and other Drivers rescue Asen-Ger using their PSI powers, transporting him back to the VENEDIG and enabling the Terranauts to continue their resistance. This is one of Rollo's most significant individual contributions to the saga -- without his intervention, the Terranaut leadership would have been decapitated (Booklet 012).
When Valdec launches his final assault on Zoe, using the Kaiser-Transmitter to destabilize the planet's sun Spilter, Rollo is among the Drivers who participate in the Super-Lodge's defense. As Zoe is destroyed, Rollo escapes with David terGorden, Asen-Ger, Queen Mandorla, and other Terranauts in a courier ship. However, the captured Drivers -- thousands of them -- are stripped of their PSI abilities by the Gray Guards (Booklet 012).
Prisoner on Taschkanur (2500-2501)
After the fall of Zoe, Rollo's fate diverges from David's. While David crash-lands on Rorqual, Rollo is captured by the Gray Guards and sent to an internment camp on Taschkanur, a remote planet orbiting the double sun Reshnan. There, he endures forced labor alongside Narda, Greeny, Whity, and other imprisoned Drivers (Booklet 037).
The conditions on Taschkanur are brutal. The prisoners face dangerous Schlicktaucher creatures and backbreaking work. A friend named Jalas is killed in a Schlicktaucher attack. Despite the hardship, Rollo remains a steadying presence in the group -- though he is more skeptical than Narda about their chances. When Narda insists that David terGorden is still alive and that they must escape to join the resistance, Rollo initially doubts her but ultimately agrees to support the plan (Booklet 037).
The Escape from Taschkanur (Early 2501)
Narda learns from a newcomer named Yamaysch about a planet called Ginger that has defied the Gray Guards, and rumors of David's survival. She devises a plan to steal a glider and escape with Rollo, Greeny, and Whity. The escape is betrayed, and during the attempt Whity is killed -- the first of the tragic losses that will destroy the original group from Asen-Ger's Lodge (Booklet 037).
Narda, Rollo, and Greeny manage to steal a glider, but it crashes. Narda is separated from the group and presumed dead. Rollo, believing Narda lost, falls into despondency. He and Greeny face imminent recapture. But Narda, rescued by the Schlicktaucher Turg al Togman and having regained her PSI abilities, orchestrates a daring counterattack: she convinces the Schlicktaucher to assault the internment camp. Narda frees Rollo and Greeny, and together they also rescue the imprisoned crew of the SONNENWIND, including Cler Masurin and Yoron Errehan. The group escapes Taschkanur aboard the scout ship (Booklet 037).
Aboard the SONNENWIND and the Loss of PSI (Early 2501)
Aboard the SONNENWIND, Rollo's situation is dire. At some point during his captivity, he was subjected to a brain operation that destroyed his PSI abilities -- the same lobotomy inflicted on countless Drivers by Valdec's regime. This means Rollo is now a "Silent Driver," unable to contribute to the Lodge's navigation through Space II and vulnerable to the alien influences of that dimension (Booklet 038).
When the SONNENWIND makes its jump into Space II to escape pursuing Ringos, the effects on Rollo are devastating: he is overwhelmed by the alien influences of Space II, becoming violent before falling unconscious. Without the PSI abilities that once shielded him, the dimension that was once his domain as a Driver has become hostile territory (Booklet 038).
The Lodge, led by Narda and the secretly treacherous Mashram Eschrit, seeks help from Gulben Horg, a Servis on Yamarahan who is an old friend of Rollo's -- suggesting that Rollo had a network of contacts and relationships across the galaxy from his years as an active Driver. Gulben Horg provides coordinates to a safe haven but is killed by the planetary police. Before dying, he reveals that David terGorden is on Ginger and mentions the League of Free Worlds (Booklet 038).
Death on El'ait (Early 2501)
The Lodge decides to head for El'ait in the Vennigat System, hoping to find a decommissioned Driver ship with fresh mistletoes. Unknown to them, Mashram Eschrit has secretly informed the Kaiser Corporation about their plans.
At the El'ait spaceport, the Lodge walks into a PSI-trap. In the chaos that follows, Rollo is killed (Booklet 038).
The details are stark and final. The big, bald Driver from Deneb -- who had survived the insurrection, the escape from Earth, the fall of Zoe, imprisonment on Taschkanur, and the horrors of Space II without PSI protection -- meets his end on a nameless spaceport, betrayed by a traitor within his own ranks.

Character Traits
- Physical Presence: Consistently described as portly, heavyset, bald-headed, and tall. His imposing build makes him a physically formidable presence among the Drivers.
- Loyalty: Rollo's defining trait is steadfast loyalty -- to Asen-Ger, to David, and above all to Narda. Even when he doubts the wisdom of a course of action, he follows his companions rather than abandon them.
- Skeptical Pragmatism: Unlike Narda's fierce faith, Rollo tends toward doubt and caution. He questions whether David is truly alive and whether escape from Taschkanur is possible. Yet his skepticism does not prevent him from acting.
- Irreverent Humor: His nickname "Killerqueen" for Queen Skytha suggests a man who uses humor to cope with danger and to deflate authority.
- Skilled Pilot: Noted as a capable pilot, a practical skill that complements his PSI abilities.
The Tragedy of the Silent Driver
Rollo's arc carries a particular poignancy because of what is taken from him. As a Driver, he navigated the wonders of Space II, guided ships through dimensions beyond normal perception, and wielded PSI powers that connected him to the cosmos. The brain operation that strips him of these abilities reduces him to a "Silent Driver" -- alive but diminished, a man who can remember what it felt like to touch the infinite but can never do so again.
When the SONNENWIND enters Space II, the dimension that was once his workplace and his gift becomes a source of torment. He becomes violent, overwhelmed by influences he can no longer control or filter. The cruelty of Valdec's regime is not just in the imprisonment and forced labor -- it is in the systematic destruction of what made the Drivers who they were.
Rollo's death on El'ait, then, is the final blow to a man already broken in a fundamental way. He dies not as the Driver he was, but as a diminished version of himself, killed in a trap set by a traitor. Yet even in this diminished state, he never stops fighting. He follows Narda. He endures Space II without protection. He keeps going until he cannot.

Legacy
Rollo is not one of the saga's headline characters. He does not reshape galactic politics, discover cosmic truths, or wield extraordinary powers. What he does is show up. From the first desperate escape from Ultima Thule to the last doomed mission on El'ait, Rollo is there -- loyal, skeptical, brave in his unshowy way.
His death, alongside the deaths of Whity and Greeny, constitutes the destruction of the original companion group from Asen-Ger's Lodge. These three losses transform Narda from a gifted but dependent girl into the woman who navigates Space II without a mistletoe through sheer force of will. In this sense, Rollo's sacrifice -- unwilling though it is -- becomes the crucible in which one of the saga's most remarkable characters is forged.
The group that once surrounded David terGorden -- Rollo, Narda, Greeny, Whity -- represented the young generation of Drivers, the future of the Terranauts. That three of the four die before the saga's midpoint speaks to the merciless toll of Max von Valdec's war against the Drivers. Only Narda survives, carrying the memory of her companions forward into the battles to come.
Rollo appears in approximately 10 booklets of Die Terranauten (003-038). He is one of the original members of Asen-Ger's Lodge and David terGorden's earliest companions.
