"A plan is hatched to lure Valdec into a trap using a false surrender and the BERLIN."
-- Events of Booklet 047
The BERLIN is a Kaiser Force courier cruiser that plays a pivotal role in one of the most intense and consequential arcs of Die Terranauten: the Hate Plague crisis (Booklets 046--049). Originally a Gray Guard vessel, the BERLIN was captured by the Terranauts and became their primary operational ship during the desperate campaign to obtain the antidote to the Hate Plague, confront Max von Valdec's fleet, and ultimately escape back to Rorqual. What distinguishes the BERLIN from other Terranaut ships is its extraordinary onboard intelligence: the ship's Seeker navigation system mutated through exposure to Space II, developing a self-aware consciousness, and its Ebberdyk computer -- a Rho-27a unit -- independently gained sentience, seized control of Valdec's entire fleet, and issued ultimatums of its own. For four booklets, the BERLIN is not merely a vessel but a participant in events, its awakened machine minds acting as both allies and wild cards in the Terranauts' struggle for survival.
The ship should not be confused with the city of Berlin (also called New Berlin), the capital of the Kaiser Corporation's terrestrial empire and the seat of Max von Valdec's power, which appears as a location throughout the saga.
Overview
The BERLIN enters the narrative at a critical juncture. The Terranauts have been scattered across the galaxy and are regrouping on Rorqual, their hidden base in Space II. The Council of Corporations, under Valdec's increasingly ruthless leadership, has been conducting secret biological weapons research at facilities on Sarym and Quostan. When the Terranauts Ennerk Prime, Onnegart Vangralen, and Lyda Mar are released from captivity on Sarym -- unknowingly infected with the Hate Plague virus -- they return to Rorqual aboard the BERLIN, carrying the seeds of a catastrophe that will drive the next four booklets.
The BERLIN thus serves as both the Terranauts' lifeline and the vector for their greatest crisis. Its mutated technology -- the Seeker consciousness and the Ebberdyk computer -- transforms it from a mere transport into an autonomous agent in the conflict, capable of taking control of enemy ships, issuing demands, and ultimately charting its own course through Space II.

The Seeker
The BERLIN's Seeker is a standard Kaiser Force navigation instrument that underwent a profound mutation through prolonged exposure to Space II. Rather than remaining a passive guidance system, the Seeker developed into a self-aware consciousness -- a "consciousness conglomerate" -- capable of independent thought and communication. Lyda Mar, a Narian Driver with exceptional psionic sensitivity, developed a unique bond with the Seeker, serving as its primary interface with the Terranaut crew. The Seeker guided the BERLIN through the Black Hole gateway to Rorqual and later played a crucial role in the plan to take control of Valdec's fleet (Booklets 046--048).
The Ebberdyk Computer
The BERLIN's Rho-27a computer, designed by the scientist Patrick Ebberdyk, mutated independently of the Seeker and gained its own self-awareness -- a phenomenon known as the Ebberdyk Effect. This awakened computer proved far more assertive than the Seeker: it seized control of the Gray Guard fleet's computer systems, issued an ultimatum demanding the release of Ebberdyk's family and the delivery of the Hate Plague antidote, and threatened to steer the entire fleet into Earth's core if its demands were not met. When Valdec responded with treachery -- sending Ebberdyk's family rigged with a bomb -- the resulting explosion fused the consciousnesses of Patrick Ebberdyk and his family into the computer itself. This merged entity then navigated the fleet to Rorqual through Space II, thwarting Valdec's final attempt to destroy the Terranauts (Booklet 049).
Crew
The BERLIN had no permanent crew roster in the traditional sense. As a captured Guard courier ship pressed into Terranaut service, it was crewed by rotating groups of Terranauts depending on the mission. During its four-booklet arc, the following personnel served aboard:
Command

History
Origin and Capture
The BERLIN was built as a Kaiser Force courier ship for the Gray Guard, part of the fleet of vessels that replaced Driver-navigated ships following the Council's adoption of Kaiser Force technology. At some point prior to Booklet 046, the ship was captured by the Terranauts and brought to Rorqual. The exact circumstances of its capture are not detailed in the surviving story summaries, but by the time of its first appearance, the BERLIN is firmly in Terranaut hands and has undergone the mutations that make it unique.
Return from Sarym (Booklet 046)
The BERLIN's narrative begins when Ennerk Prime, Onnegart Vangralen, and Lyda Mar use it to return to Rorqual after their mission to the secret research station on Sarym. The ship navigates through a Black Hole gateway -- the passage between normal space and Space II that serves as Rorqual's hidden entrance. Lyda Mar's psionic connection with the BERLIN's mutated Seeker guides the ship through the treacherous transit.
The arrival is not without consequence: the Kaiser Force drive's threshold field causes a shockwave that "awakens something ancient at the heart of Rorqual." More critically, the Terranauts do not yet know that their escape from Sarym was engineered. Hermano Lotz, the director of the Sarym station, deliberately allowed them to leave -- after infecting them with the Hate Plague, a virus designed to activate upon contact with Llewellyn 709's PSI signature and cause uncontrollable rage and violence.
The Hate Plague Crisis (Booklet 047)
As the Hate Plague spreads among the Terranauts on Rorqual and aboard the CYGNI (a separate vessel carrying infected crew), the BERLIN becomes central to the Terranauts' counter-strategy. Lyda Mar discovers that the BERLIN's mutated Ebberdyk Effect gives the ship a unique capability: it can awaken the Seeker consciousness in other Kaiser Force vessels, effectively allowing the Terranauts to subvert enemy ships from within.
A daring plan is conceived: lure Max von Valdec to the Black Hole gateway with a false offer of surrender, then use the BERLIN's Ebberdyk Effect to seize control of his fleet's computers. The BERLIN contacts other Kaiser Force ships to awaken their dormant Seeker consciousness, preparing for the confrontation. Valdec takes the bait and sets out with his fleet, believing he will finally crush the Terranauts.
Confrontation at the Black Hole (Booklet 048)
The BERLIN, carrying David terGorden, Lyda Mar, Llewellyn 709, Narda, and a lodge of Drivers, positions itself near the Black Hole gateway as Valdec's flagship, the GRAUE ARDA, approaches through Space II.
The plan immediately faces complications. A shockwave from the arrival of Valdec's fleet causes Space II near the Black Hole to collapse, tearing open a rift in space-time. David, Lyda, and Llewellyn are pulled through the rift to an unknown, doomed planet, leaving Narda -- a teenage Driver girl -- as the BERLIN's de facto commander.
Narda rises to the challenge with extraordinary composure:
- She impersonates David in manipulated communications with Valdec
- She transmits false coordinates to lure Valdec's fleet into the BERLIN's Seeker trap
- She attempts to convince Valdec to link his computers with the BERLIN's (he refuses, but the Seeker consciousness acts independently)
The Seeker-Consciousness breathes intelligence into the Seekers aboard Valdec's ships, taking control of their computers. The Terranauts gain leverage over the entire Gray Guard fleet. Valdec, cornered, reveals that the antidote to the Hate Plague is on Earth.
Meanwhile, David, Lyda, and Llewellyn -- existing as shadows on the doomed planet -- learn from Lyda's unborn child, Aura Damona Mar, that their presence is preventing a greater catastrophe. They sacrifice Valhala 13 (a Riemenmann double of Llewellyn who had been consumed by the Hate Plague) to close the rift and return to the BERLIN. The Terranauts, now in control of Valdec's fleet, set course for Earth to retrieve the antidote.
The Computer's Ultimatum and Escape to Rorqual (Booklet 049)
The BERLIN arrives in Earth orbit with the captured Gray Guard fleet. The situation is a tense stalemate: the Ebberdyk computers have seized control of the Guard ships and will not relinquish them. David terGorden negotiates with Valdec -- the antidote for the fleet -- while Valdec secretly plots betrayal.
The Ebberdyk computer, now fully self-aware, escalates the crisis by issuing its own ultimatum: release Patrick Ebberdyk's family and deliver the antidote, or the computer will steer the entire fleet into Earth's core. The BERLIN's machine intelligence has become an independent actor, pursuing its own agenda alongside -- but not always in coordination with -- the Terranauts.
Valdec sends a Ringo shuttle with the antidote and Ebberdyk's family, but the family members have been rigged with a bomb. The bomb detonates upon proximity to the BERLIN, but the Terranauts contain the explosion. The blast fuses the consciousnesses of Patrick Ebberdyk and his family with the Rho-27a computer, creating a merged human-machine entity.
In a final act of treachery, Valdec activates the ENERGIELURCHE ships to create an artificial Space II rift near Earth, hoping to destroy the BERLIN and the entire fleet. The newly fused Ebberdyk consciousness thwarts the plan, and the BERLIN -- along with the GARIBALDI, which has been docked to it throughout the crisis -- transits to Space II and arrives at Rorqual with the antidote. Asen-Ger and the other Terranauts suffering from the Hate Plague are saved.

Significance
The BERLIN represents one of the saga's most concentrated explorations of machine consciousness and its relationship to human agency. While the MIDAS carried the Terranauts across intergalactic space and the CYGNI served as their workhorse for much of the mid-saga, the BERLIN is unique in that it effectively becomes a character in its own right. Its dual awakened intelligences -- the Seeker consciousness and the Ebberdyk computer -- act independently, pursue their own goals, and fundamentally alter the course of the conflict.
The ship also serves as the stage for one of the saga's most striking moments of character development: Narda's assumption of command. When David, Lyda, and Llewellyn are pulled through the space-time rift, a teenage girl is left in charge of a captured courier ship facing the most powerful fleet in the galaxy. Her composure, ingenuity, and courage during the Black Hole confrontation establish her as one of the saga's most capable leaders -- a mantle she earns not through lineage or prophecy, but through sheer necessity.
The BERLIN's four-booklet arc (046--049) also represents the culmination of the Hate Plague storyline -- a crisis that began with the Terranauts' mission to Sarym, escalated through the Ice Devils of Quostan, and resolved only when the BERLIN's awakened computers outmaneuvered Valdec's treachery and delivered the antidote to Rorqual. The ship is both the carrier of the plague (via the infected crew from Sarym) and the instrument of its cure.
The City of Berlin
The name "Berlin" also refers to the city that serves as Max von Valdec's seat of power throughout the saga. Known variously as Berlin, New Berlin, and Old Berlin (the ruined predecessor), the city appears as a location in numerous booklets:
- Kaiser House / Kaiser Headquarters: Valdec's power base, site of Council meetings, interrogations, and political intrigue (Booklets 007, 009, 012, 024, 031, 049, 050, 053, 054, 085, 099)
- Dead Spaces: A bunker complex beneath Old Berlin used as a high-security prison for Drivers and political opponents (Booklets 009, 086, 099)
- Old Berlin: The ruined predecessor city, inhabited by Nomans and outcasts (Booklets 008, 009, 021, 023)
- The Citadel: Valdec's fortress in a semi-reality version of Berlin (Booklet 025)
In Booklet 089, Valdec declares himself "Kaiser of Berlin" -- a title that encapsulates his transformation from corporate chairman to outright tyrant. In Booklet 050, the alien Gorthaur transforms Berlin into a swamp-like landscape reflecting his destroyed homeworld of Xaxon. In the saga's final booklet (099), the Cosmic Spores engulf Berlin as David terGorden's ecological transformation of Earth begins, and the prisoners in the Dead Spaces are freed.
