-- Description of the Transmitter Tree on Onyx (Booklet 027)
"A vital node in the space-time stroboscope network."
-- Description of Urdbrunnen (Booklet 078)
The Space-Time Stroboscope (German: Raum-Zeit-Stroboskop, abbreviated RZS; English abbreviation STS) is the organic teleportation and transit technology of Die Terranauten -- a network of living, tree-based transmitter systems created by the Ancients that enables instantaneous matter transmission across interstellar distances through shimmering, rainbow-colored energy fields. Unlike the destructive Kaiser Force, which tears open Space II by brute technological force, the Space-Time Stroboscope operates in harmony with the cosmic order, forming the backbone of the Space Road System -- the galaxy's natural transportation infrastructure maintained by the Steerers and powered by World Trees.
The STS appears in at least 13 of the saga's 99 booklets and is referenced across dozens of technology, concept, and location stubs, making it one of the most frequently mentioned technologies in the series. It represents the biological, cooperative alternative to Kaiser Force transit -- the way humanity was always meant to travel the stars.
Overview
At its core, the Space-Time Stroboscope is a living transmitter system rooted in the biology of World Trees -- massive, sentient plant organisms descended from the Ancients' pre-cosmic civilization. Each STS node consists of a World Tree (or a related sentient tree such as an Ulema) that generates a transit field (Transitfeld) -- a shimmering, rainbow-colored energy field through which matter, people, and even entire spacecraft can be instantaneously transported to distant locations along predefined Space Roads (Weltraumstrassen).
The STS is not a single device but a network -- a galaxy-spanning web of interconnected nodes, each anchored by a living tree and coordinated by Steerers. This network is formally known as the STS System (German: RZS-System) or the Space Road System (German: Raum-Zeit-Stroboskop-Netz). Key nodes include locations such as Urdbrunnen, Shondyke, Veldvald, Onyx, and the Holy Valley on Earth.
The technology is fundamentally organic and psionic. Transit through an STS field is triggered and controlled by PSI-gifted beings -- particularly Steerers and Drivers in symbiosis with the tree -- rather than by mechanical or electronic systems. The trees themselves are quasi-sentient or fully sentient, capable of choosing destinations, refusing passengers, and responding to psionic commands.
Mechanics
The Transit Field
The active component of the Space-Time Stroboscope is the transit field (Transitfeld) -- also called the RZS field (RZS-Feld), transmission field (Transmissionsfeld), or RZS transit field (RZS-Transitfeld). This field manifests as a characteristic rainbow-colored shimmer (Regenbogenschillern), a visual signature so distinctive that it serves as the primary identifying mark of STS technology throughout the saga.
The transit field is generated by the living tree at the center of each STS node. When activated, the field creates an n-dimensional channel -- a fold in space-time -- that connects the origin point to a destination along the Space Road network. Objects and beings entering the field are dematerialized, transmitted through this channel, and rematerialized at the destination.
Key properties of the transit field include:
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| Rainbow shimmer | The field displays a distinctive multi-colored, iridescent glow -- the "rainbow fields of space-time stroboscopes" (Regenbogenfelder der Raum-Zeit-Stroboskope) |
| Psionic activation | Transit is initiated through PSI commands from Steerers, Drivers, or the sentient trees themselves |
| Bidirectional travel | The field can transport in both directions along a Space Road |
| Matter transmission | Capable of transporting individuals, groups, and even entire spacecraft |
| Contra-RZS fields | Reverse-polarity fields that enable arrival at specific destinations (e.g., Scanner Cloud rematerializes via a Contra-RZS field on Technologos) |
The Control Tree (Steuerbaum)
Each STS node is governed by a Control Tree (Steuerbaum des RZS) -- the living organism that generates and directs the transit field. Control Trees are either World Trees of the Long Row network or related sentient plant organisms such as the Ro Ulema on Veldvald or the Transmitter Tree on Onyx.
The Control Tree performs several functions:
- Generates the transit field that enables teleportation
- Selects destinations along the Space Road network
- Coordinates with other nodes to maintain network integrity
- Responds to psionic commands from Steerers and authorized operators
- Can be damaged or disrupted, causing network failures (e.g., chrome beetles eating the steering tree at Urdbrunnen, Booklet 078)
The Control Trees are the physical infrastructure of the STS, and their health is directly linked to the functionality of the network. When the Gray Guards on Onyx tortured the Transmitter Tree to force it to reveal Shondyke's location, they were exploiting the tree's sentient control over the Space Roads (Booklet 027).
Disentanglement Pain
Transit through the STS is not painless. Travelers experience Disentanglement Pain (Entzerrungsschmerz) -- a physical sensation caused by the process of dematerialization and rematerialization through the transit field. This pain is a consistent feature of STS transit and distinguishes it from other forms of travel in the saga.
Misfire Transits
The STS network is not infallible. A Misfire Transit (Fehltransit or RZS-Fehltransit) occurs when the transit field sends travelers to an unintended destination. In Booklet 055, when Ro Ulema activates an RZS to transport the GARIBALDI toward Rorqual, the ship instead ends up in the Turquoise star system -- a graveyard of derelict spacecraft. Such misfire transits can be caused by network disruptions, damaged Control Trees, or interference from external forces.
Hyperphysical Emission Phenomena
The operation of the STS produces observable side effects known as Hyperphysical RZS-Emission Phenomena (hyperphysikalische RZS-Abstrahlphanomene) -- visual and energetic effects produced by the interaction of the transit field with normal space. These emissions are distinct from the destructive KF-emissions produced by Kaiser Force technology; STS emissions are part of the natural cosmic order and do not accelerate entropy.
The Space Road Network
The Space-Time Stroboscopes do not operate in isolation. They form the nodes of a vast interstellar network known as the Space Roads (Weltraumstrassen) or Space Road System -- a web of n-dimensional channels connecting World Trees, sentient plant systems, and key locations across the galaxy.
Structure
The Space Road network is hierarchical:
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| Major nodes | Anchored by powerful World Trees or sentient Ulema systems (e.g., Urdbrunnen, Shondyke, Yggdrasil on Earth) |
| Minor nodes | Smaller STS installations on colonial worlds (e.g., Veldvald, Onyx, Rubin) |
| Junctions | Points where multiple Space Roads converge, enabling transfers between routes (e.g., the junction in Bortzynn on Rubin, Booklet 035) |
| Control Trees | Individual steering trees that govern specific sectors of the network |
Relationship to the Long Row
The Space Road network is a subsystem of the larger Intercosmic Anti-Entropy System (the Long Row) -- the galaxy-spanning infrastructure created by the Ancients to counteract entropy. While the Long Row's primary function is anti-entropy maintenance, its physical network of World Trees also serves as the foundation for STS transit. The Steerers who coordinate the Long Row are therefore also the custodians of the Space Road System.
Cosmic Spore Transit
In addition to transporting people and ships, the STS network serves as a delivery mechanism for Cosmic Spores -- the biological healing agents created by the Steerers. The STS "automatically transfers Cosmic Spores into the Milky Way" (Booklet 098), functioning as a cosmic distribution system that disperses the Spores to worlds in need of ecological restoration. In this capacity, the STS is not merely a transportation network but a vital organ of the galaxy's immune system.
History Across the Saga
Discovery on Onyx (Booklet 027)
The Space-Time Stroboscope first appears in the saga when the GDANSK, crewed by a Driver lodge led by Hadersen Wells, arrives at Onyx and encounters a Transmitter Tree -- an ancient alien artifact used by the Gray Guards to manipulate space-time and establish connections to distant worlds, including Shondyke. The Guards, under Queen Zalia and the head scientist Snatcher, have been torturing the tree to extract information about Space Roads and control them.
Hege Krotzer, a Gray Guard scientist who defects, reveals that the Guards are "torturing the tree to control space roads." He engineers a diversion, allowing the Drivers to reach the transit field. Guided by the Primeval Tree's last surge of power, they enter the transit field and are transported to Rubin. Krotzer, Zalia, and the dog Nanuk also enter the field, but their destination is left unknown -- a misfire transit that foreshadows the technology's unpredictability. This booklet establishes the fundamental nature of the STS: it is biological, tree-based, sentient, and connected to a network of Space Roads. It also establishes the moral dimension -- the Gray Guards' exploitation of the tree through torture stands in contrast to the cooperative relationship between the Drivers and the living systems.
The Ro Ulema on Veldvald (Booklet 028)
The second major appearance comes on Veldvald, a prison planet disguised as a lumber operation. The Ro Ulema, the sentient central tree of Veldvald, controls a Space-Time Stroboscope that it uses both defensively and offensively:
- Defensive: The Ro Ulema transports Llewellyn 709 and Claude Farrell via STS to itself, rescuing them from the Quom attack
- Offensive: The Ro Ulema uses its control over the STS to transport an entire Gray Guard squadron to a remote, mountainous region, destroying them
This episode demonstrates that the STS is not merely a passive transit system but an active weapon in the hands of a sentient controller. The Ro Ulema's ability to weaponize the technology -- teleporting enemy forces to lethal locations -- reveals the STS's military potential, a capability that depends entirely on the sentient tree's will and PSI power.
Space Roads from Rubin to Shondyke (Booklet 035)
David terGorden, Llewellyn 709, Queen Mandorla, and Scanner Cloud use a junction of Space Roads in the abandoned non-human city of Bortzynn on Rubin to reach Shondyke, the secret central world of the Gray Guards. This episode establishes that the Space Road network has junctions -- intersections where travelers can switch between routes -- and that the network includes paths to locations hidden from normal navigation. The GARIBALDI Misfire Transit (Booklet 055)
The Ro Ulema activates an RZS to transport the GARIBALDI toward Rorqual, but the ship ends up instead in the Turquoise star system, a graveyard of derelict spacecraft. This RZS misfire transit demonstrates the network's fallibility: even a sentient tree controller can produce an incorrect transit, sending travelers to an unintended and dangerous destination.
The CORTES, a Gray Guard battle cruiser, is also caught in the RZS and arrives in the same star system, suggesting that active STS fields can capture nearby vessels unintentionally.
The GARIBALDI Lost (Booklet 056)
In the aftermath, the GARIBALDI is described as "lost while trying to reach Rorqual via the space-time stroboscope," confirming the risks inherent in STS travel. The Council's decision to return to Driver space travel due to the dangers of Kaiser Force highlights the STS as a critical alternative transportation technology.
Chan de Nouille's Discovery (Booklet 072)
On Earth, David terGorden and his allies discover that Chan de Nouille, the Great Gray, is "concealing information about the space-time stroboscopes." In this booklet, the STS is described as "defensive weapons against Kaiser Force" -- revealing that the technology has a dual function: not merely transportation, but active defense against the entropy-accelerating effects of Kaiser Force. This positions the STS as a strategic countermeasure in the broader cosmic conflict.
Reviving Yggdrasil for STS Access (Booklet 076)
Chan de Nouille attempts to revive Yggdrasil in Greenland's Holy Valley specifically to "create a space-time stroboscope and reach Shondyke." This confirms that World Trees are the generators of STS fields and that a functioning Yggdrasil would provide Earth with direct access to the Space Road network. The attempt fails, trapping Narda and Nayala's consciousnesses within the tree, underscoring the dangers of attempting to force-activate a damaged World Tree.Breakthrough to Shondyke and Urdbrunnen Repair (Booklet 078)
This booklet is central to understanding the STS network's infrastructure:
- Morgenstern and Scanner Cloud are sent to Urdbrunnen, described as "a vital node in the space-time stroboscope network," to investigate its failure
- At Urdbrunnen, they discover that chrome beetles are eating the steering tree, causing the network disruption
- Scanner Cloud, with David and Morgenstern's help, uses psionic abilities to lure the beetles to Glimmer, a planet where they can help control the overgrowth of the Psi Ulema
- With Urdbrunnen restored, the STS network resumes functioning
- David uses Yggdrasil at the Holy Valley to create an STS connection to reach Shondyke
This episode establishes the organic vulnerability of the STS -- its biological components can be attacked by parasites, and repair requires ecological intervention rather than mechanical maintenance.
STS and Cosmic Spores (Booklet 084)
On the Solitary Wanderer, the STS is described as "a device used to open a pathway for Cosmic Spores." This confirms the STS's role in the broader ecological mission of the Steerers: the Space Road network serves not only as a transportation system for people and ships but as a delivery mechanism for the biological healing agents that maintain galactic health.
Shondyke as STS Center (Booklet 089)
By this point in the saga, Shondyke is described as "the new center of the Space-Time Stroboscopes and Kaiser Force traps" -- the headquarters of the Steerers and new Guardians. The STS network, originally discovered as a scattered collection of alien artifacts, has been consolidated under Steerer coordination into a functioning galactic infrastructure centered on Shondyke.
STS in the Old Forest (Booklet 094)
The STS is described as "a network of n-dimensional channels used for faster-than-light travel," aligning it explicitly with the n-dimensional physics that underlies the saga's cosmology. Luther Straightwire's revelation that the Old Forest is composed of inactive Steerers implies that the STS network was once far larger, maintained by a vast population of active Steerers now merged into collective dormancy.
Automatic Cosmic Spore Transfer (Booklet 098)
In the "White" reality of the Duel of Dreams, the STS is described as "a device that automatically transfers Cosmic Spores into the Milky Way." In this hopeful alternate future, the STS functions as the circulatory system of a healed galaxy -- continuously distributing biological restorative agents without requiring manual intervention.
Liberation of Prisoners via STS (Booklet 099)
In the saga's finale, the STS plays a dramatic role: Manuel Lucci and other political prisoners are freed from the Dead Spaces under Berlin by Bolter's Hausfreund via a Space-Time Stroboscope and transported to Ultima Thule. Claude Farrell also arrives via STS. An STS emerges in Berlin itself, demonstrating that the network can now reach into the heart of Valdec's empire.
This final deployment of the STS represents its triumph: the organic, cooperative technology that Valdec sought to replace with Kaiser Force is the instrument of his regime's undoing, delivering freedom to the imprisoned and salvation to the planet.

STS vs. Kaiser Force
The Space-Time Stroboscope and Kaiser Force represent the saga's two opposing paradigms of interstellar travel and, by extension, two opposing philosophies of humanity's relationship with the cosmos:
| Dimension | Space-Time Stroboscope (STS) | Kaiser Force (KF) |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Ancients (Pre-Cosmic plant civilization) | Kaiser Corporation (Zarkophin, Max von Valdec) |
| Nature | Organic, living, tree-based | Technological, mechanical, industrial |
| Power source | PSI symbiosis with World Trees | Brute-force extraction from Space II |
| Operator | Sentient trees, Steerers, Drivers | Automated drives, any crew |
| Side effects | Disentanglement Pain; occasional misfire transits | Entropy acceleration, planetary destruction, Gray Holes, stellar destabilization |
| Cosmic impact | Maintains the Long Row; distributes Cosmic Spores | Damages the Long Row; accelerates universal heat death |
| Moral valence | Cooperative, symbiotic | Extractive, dominating |
| Visual signature | Rainbow shimmer | Energy cascades, entropy flashes |
| Strategic role | Defensive weapon against Kaiser Force | Offensive weapon of imperial conquest |
The saga ultimately resolves this dichotomy in favor of the STS. David terGorden departs on an Organ-Sailer -- a living, bio-technological spacecraft -- to eliminate Kaiser Force forever, while the STS network continues to function as the galaxy's organic transportation infrastructure.

Themes
Nature as Infrastructure. The Space-Time Stroboscope embodies the saga's vision of technology as an extension of natural systems rather than a replacement for them. The STS is grown, not built. It is maintained by living beings in symbiosis with sentient trees, not by engineers servicing machines. In the Terranauten universe, the most advanced transportation technology in the galaxy is a network of trees.
Cooperation vs. Domination. The STS requires cooperation: between the traveler and the tree, between the Steerer and the World Tree, between the node and the network. It cannot be operated by force -- the Gray Guards' torture of the Transmitter Tree on Onyx was an attempt to extract cooperation through violence, and it ultimately failed. Kaiser Force, by contrast, operates through domination, tearing open Space II by brute force. The saga's resolution -- Kaiser Force eliminated, STS triumphant -- affirms that cooperation is not merely morally superior but cosmically sustainable.
The Living Network. The STS is a network in the truest sense: an interconnected system of living nodes, each dependent on the health of the others. When the steering tree at Urdbrunnen is damaged by chrome beetles, the entire network suffers. When Yggdrasil on Earth withers, humanity loses its connection to the Space Roads. The STS network is an ecological system, vulnerable to disruption but also resilient through the self-healing mechanisms of its biological components.
The Alternative Path. Throughout the saga, the STS represents the road not taken -- the organic, cooperative alternative to Kaiser Force that humanity could have embraced from the beginning. Valdec's tragedy is that he sought to free humanity from dependence on Drivers and World Trees by building a technological replacement that proved catastrophically destructive. The STS, which was always available as the natural alternative, required only trust in the living systems that sustain the cosmos.
