War of the Castes
Krieg der Kasten
Plot Summary
In "War of the Castes", the Earth is on the brink of a global uprising. Alirujana, an emissary from a post-technical civilization, arrives in the Sol System to observe humanity and assess the threat of their entropy-accelerating technology, the Kaiser Force. She discovers a connection between humanity and the renegade buds of the Tree, and is confused by the complex social structure and the Terranauts' role in it.
Meanwhile, Chan de Nouille, the Great Gray, seeks to revive Yggdrasil in Greenland's Holy Valley Ödrödir to create a space-time stroboscope and reach Shondyke, the lost central world of the Clone Queens. David terGorden, now a GeneralManag and Special Envoy of the Council, attempts to mediate between the Council and the insurgent groups to prevent the impending war. He is accompanied by Queen Cynthiana, a Clone Queen, who is secretly tasked by Chan to monitor him.
The Action Committee Free Africa initiates an uprising in Kilimanjaro, while the Nomans revolt in the ruins of New Delhi. Gian Cuny, a Relax addicted to dust-medusa extract, gets caught up in the chaos of the Kilimanjaro uprising and dies seeking his next fix. Manuel Lucci, a leader of the insurgents, is targeted in an assassination attempt during negotiations with David, orchestrated by the GeneralManags.
Chan's attempt to revive Yggdrasil fails, trapping Narda and Nayala's consciousnesses within the tree. The GeneralManags, led by Anlyka terCrupp, plot to discredit Ignazius Tyll and seize control of the Council. They orchestrate the assassination attempt on Lucci to sabotage David's mediation efforts. Ultimately, Tyll is removed from power, and David is unexpectedly elected as the new Lord Colonel of the Council, manipulated into the position by Chan de Nouille.
