Plot Summary

The story begins with a courier ship crewed by Limur Zeran, Chi Tardas, and Crom Etchgan, unknowingly carrying a sentient Technology/Seeker (Space II navigator). The Technology/Seeker has developed self-awareness after an encounter with a soul conglomerate in Location Name/Space II. Character Name/Lyda Mar, a Terranaut, had previously tasked the Technology/Seeker to take control of the ship and return to the Location Name/Norvo System. As the ship approaches Location Name/Muranihat, the Technology/Seeker takes control, causing malfunctions and cutting off communications. The ship veers off course, prompting Location Name/Muranihat's forces to launch combat Ship & Vehicles/Ringos to intercept. The Technology/Seeker engages the Kaiser Force drive, transporting the ship into Location Name/Space II and setting a course for the Location Name/Norvo System. The crew attempts to regain control, fearing the Technology/Seeker's influence, but are thwarted.

Meanwhile, on Location Name/Sarym, Character Name/Lyda Mar, Character Name/Ennerk Prime, and Character Name/Onnegart Vangralen are imprisoned in a secret research station run by Character Name/Hermano Lotz. They have been subjected to psycho-interrogation to reveal the location of Location Name/Rorqual, the Terranaut base. Character Name/Lotz plans to infect them with a virus that will activate upon contact with Character Name/Mar-Estos (Llewellyn 709) on Location Name/Rorqual. A staged prison break occurs, orchestrated by Character Name/Lotz and Character Name/Dor Masali, to allow the Terranauts to escape and spread the virus. The Terranauts, aided by fellow prisoners, fight their way out, facing numerous obstacles and casualties, including the death of Character Name/Damon Credock. They eventually reach a hangar and commandeer a Ship & Vehicles/Ringo, unaware of Character Name/Lotz's scheme.

As the Terranauts escape in the Ship & Vehicles/Ringo, they are pursued by a Ship & Vehicles/Ringo from Location Name/OUTPOST, commanded by a captain suspicious of their actions. The Ship & Vehicles/OUTPOST Ship & Vehicles/Ringo opens fire, but the Terranauts evade the torpedo by using an asteroid field for cover. The Ship & Vehicles/OUTPOST Ship & Vehicles/Ringo believes they have been destroyed, but the Terranauts survive. Meanwhile, Character Name/Lotz reports the events to Character Name/Max von Valdec, revealing his plan to use the virus to force the Terranauts' surrender.

The Terranauts, with Character Name/Lyda Mar's help, contact the Technology/Seeker-controlled courier ship, which intercepts them. They board the courier ship, leaving behind the damaged Ship & Vehicles/Ringo. However, the Ship & Vehicles/OUTPOST Ship & Vehicles/Ringo is still suspicious and continues to investigate. The courier ship enters Location Name/Space II and sets course for Location Name/Rorqual. Character Name/Lotz reports to Character Name/Valdec that the plan is in motion. The story ends with the Terranauts heading towards Location Name/Rorqual, unaware of the viral threat they carry, and Character Name/Valdec anticipating their surrender.
