The Exiles of Oxyd
Die Verbannten von Oxyd
Plot Summary
The story begins with Queen Quendolain aboard the TERRA I spacecraft, now located on the transformed asteroid Oxyd, which is being reshaped by Kaiser Force energies into a new universe called Phoenix. A tremor injures Quendolain, but she miraculously heals, declaring herself and her former crew the "Changed of Phoenix." Queen Carmen, the current commander, struggles to maintain order as the HADES spacecraft, also stranded on Oxyd, sends a distress call.
Centurio Claudette and other "Changed" urge Carmen to help the HADES crew, warning of dire consequences if they don't. Quendolain foresees death and destruction, claiming Space II wants to reclaim Phoenix. Figures emerge from the wrecked HADES, and three enter the TERRA I, revealed to be "Changed" themselves. Quendolain insists that Carmen must embrace her humanity to become part of Phoenix and escape destruction.
Queen Somar-Ellen, a survivor from the HADES, navigates the treacherous landscape with Hauptmann Ramus, encountering the TERRA I and realizing the "Changed" are being spared. A tense exchange reveals the animosity between Gray Drivers and Terranauts, prisoners from the Moon Dungeons. Quendolain proposes a lodge to unite the crews, but Carmen resists, suspicious of the "Changed."
A lodge is formed, creating a shared sphere of thought that aids the survivors of the HADES. However, the unity shatters, and Carmen fears Quendolain's motives. Somar-Ellen and Ramus reach the TERRA I, where Quendolain declares Phoenix a new universe. Conflict erupts between Gray Drivers and Terranauts, with Quendolain urging peace. The Gray Drivers, led by Carmen, overpower the Terranauts, but Quendolain intervenes to prevent further violence. Carmen orders the Terranauts and "Changed" off the ship.
Daktar, a Terranaut, convinces Quendolain that Carmen is a threat. Daktar attacks Carmen, but she is protected by a lodge. The Terranauts kill Carmen, triggering a deadly response from the Gray Drivers. A beam cannon is fired, seemingly killing the "Changed," but instead unleashes monstrous creatures born from hate-thoughts. The Terranauts and Gray Drivers are attacked, and Quendolain urges surrender. The Gray Drivers eventually heed her advice, and the monsters dissipate.
Somar-Ellen and Ramus emerge from the TERRA I, now in charge. They form a pact with Quendolain and the Terranauts for peaceful coexistence. Somar-Ellen's diary entries reveal the adaptation to Phoenix, the lack of hunger, and the theory that Phoenix is still in Space II and might be repelled. Quendolain proposes contacting Cantos. A lodge is formed, but their attempt to contact Space II fails.
Meanwhile, Cantos is searching for David terGorden and learns of Oxyd. He decides to investigate, despite the Terranauts' concerns. He attempts to penetrate Phoenix's energy barrier but is hurled back in time to the destruction of Zoe. He encounters Llewellyn 709 and then returns to the present, finally managing to land on Phoenix. He warns the survivors of the danger Phoenix poses and urges them to evacuate, but they refuse, having adapted to the world.
Cantos leaves Phoenix, determined to find out where it's headed. Back on Rorqual, David terGorden is warned of an approaching danger. Cantos contacts Llewellyn 709 and lands on Rorqual. He explains that Phoenix is heading toward Rorqual. A Super-Lodge is formed on Rorqual to contact the Changed Ones on Phoenix and convince them to move their world. The Changed Ones succeed in moving Phoenix out of Space II. Cantos prepares to leave for Genessos to warn of the danger humanity poses, but pledges to advocate for them. He departs, leaving the Terranauts to rebuild on Rorqual.
