Plot Summary

Growan terGorden, surrounded by treachery and intrigue, is planning his wedding to Myriam. His nephew, Mar-Estos, openly supports the Drivers, while Clint Gayheen manipulates events from the shadows. Hados, an Arbiter, arrives at the research center, raising suspicions. Myriam finds herself increasingly isolated, guarded by Gray Guards and cut off from communication with the Drivers. Mar-Estos attempts to meet with her but is thwarted by Gayheen. Myriam uses her PSI abilities to contact Shadow, a Driver, who informs her that Mar-Estos is waiting for her. Shadow is unable to help immediately due to being in bed with someone.

Gayheen confronts Mar-Estos, warning him to stay away from Myriam. Mar-Estos retaliates by stunning Gayheen and leaving him outside his apartment. Meanwhile, Jonsson, a Driver, gets drunk and insults Gray Guards, leading to his capture and coercion into becoming an informant. He is tasked with gaining Myriam's trust and obtaining her notes on the Yggdrasil Project. Growan dismisses Mar-Estos' concerns about Myriam's isolation, stating it's for her own good. Myriam attends a festival with Growan, where she is introduced to important figures, including Max von Valdec. A self-proclaimed prophet disrupts the wedding ceremony, accusing Myriam of witchcraft. Shadow intervenes, attacking the prophet, but is injured by Gray Guards.

Merlin receives a message from Yggdrasil warning of Hados's dangerous experiment. Hados attempts to inject Drivers with a substance to enhance their PSI abilities, but Mar-Estos, Merlin, and Shadow intervene. Merlin reveals that the substance is deadly and that Hados is working for Valdec. Elko, one of the Drivers who was injected, is saved by Merlin. Hados is killed, and his death is covered up as an accident. Growan considers abandoning the Yggdrasil Project but is convinced to continue it. Myriam proposes to lead the project, and Growan reluctantly agrees.

Jonsson informs Gayheen that Myriam is injecting herself with a distillate from Yggdrasil. Gayheen plans to have her declared insane, but Shadow attacks him. Shadow informs the Drivers that Myriam is in danger, and they plan to help her escape. Myriam receives a warning from Shadow and flees the palace, but Shadow is fatally wounded by a Gray Guard. Growan confronts Myriam in Ödrödir, attempting to persuade her to return, but she refuses. He threatens to isolate the valley. Gayheen reports to Growan that Myriam is spending most of her time connected to Yggdrasil. Growan decides to remove the Drivers from Greenland, believing they are manipulating Myriam. Mar-Estos objects, and Growan accuses him of undermining him.

Gayheen attempts to access Growan's Council Chamber using Myriam's ID card and contacts Valdec, revealing his plans to undermine Growan. Mar-Estos reveals Gayheen's treachery to Growan. Growan gives Mar-Estos authority to deal with Gayheen, who is captured and presumably killed. Growan confronts Valdec in Berlin, accusing him of treachery. Mar-Estos disappears after his flight with Gayheen. Myriam gives birth to David, but dies shortly after, claiming he is not Growan's son and that he will free humanity. Growan rejects David, but Merlin takes him. Growan orders the destruction of the laboratories and the construction of a tunnel from Merlin's cave to his palace.

Years later, Growan visits David and agrees that Merlin will raise him until he is three. The story then shifts to David as an adult and connects to events on Rorqual in Space II. David is tasked with finding a way to help the Malaiara and the Banshees. The story ends with David helping the Banshees leave Space II, and the Malaiara are freed.
