"The TERRA I is pulled into Space II along with Oxyd."
-- Events of Booklet 019, Operation Doomsday
The TERRA I is a Gray Guard spacecraft that occupies a singular place in the history of Die Terranauten. Originally one of six Gray Guard vessels assigned to the vicinity of the Kaiser Force experiment on the asteroid Oxyd, the TERRA I was inadvertently pulled into Space II during Summacum Homan's catastrophic experiment in 2501 -- becoming the only human vessel trapped in the alternate dimension alongside the charged asteroid. The ship's subsequent odyssey -- from Space II back to normal space and then back into Space II again, from military vessel to prison ship to stranded ark, from instrument of the Council of Corporations to shelter for the Changed of Phoenix -- spans five booklets and forms one of the saga's most dramatic through-lines.
The TERRA I's story is inseparable from that of its commander, Queen Quendolain, and from the transformation of Oxyd itself. The ship served as the last remnant of human civilization for those stranded on the asteroid, and its crew -- Gray Guards, Gray Drivers, and imprisoned Terranauts alike -- became the seed population of the Changed of Phoenix, the transcendent beings who would ultimately transform Oxyd from a weapon of annihilation into a life-giving world.

| The Changed | Queen Quendolain | Crew members transformed by Space II/Phoenix energies | Embraced the transformation; sought peaceful coexistence through PSI lodges |
| Gray Drivers | Queen Carmen, later Queen Somar-Ellen | Military personnel loyal to the Gray Guard hierarchy | Maintained discipline and chain of command; suspicious of the Changed |
| Terranauts | Daktar | Former prisoners from the Moon Dungeons | Hostile toward the Gray Guards; favored direct action; eventually integrated under Somar-Ellen's pact |
History
The Kaiser Force Experiment and the Plunge into Space II (Booklet 019)
The TERRA I's fateful journey began during Summacum Homan's experiment to transport the asteroid Oxyd through Space II using Kaiser Force technology. The experiment, conducted in Earth orbit in 2501, was intended to demonstrate the viability of Kaiser Force-driven transmitter technology as an alternative to Driver-dependent space travel.
The experiment went catastrophically wrong. The asteroid was saturated with Space II energies but not successfully transported. Instead, the TERRA I -- one of six Gray Guard spacecraft in the vicinity and commanded by Queen Quendolain -- was inadvertently pulled into Space II along with Oxyd.
Within Space II, the TERRA I's crew experienced profound and terrifying changes:
- Spatial distortions: The ship's instruments malfunctioned; reality itself became unstable
- Shadow entities: Strange shadows appeared throughout the vessel, leading Quendolain to believe they had entered a kind of afterlife
- The Driver Lodge vanished: Mater Helia and the entire Driver Lodge disappeared without explanation
- Breakdown of conditioning: The Gray Guard crew began exhibiting unauthorized emotions, questioning orders, and displaying independent thought -- their conditioning was disintegrating
- Universal transformation: Quendolain realized that exposure to Kaiser Force had transformed her entire crew into Drivers, granting them PSI abilities they had never possessed
Quendolain ordered the ship's energies shut down, but the TERRA I remained trapped. Meanwhile, Summacum Homan on his observation ship was briefly contacted by Quendolain through Space II and encountered a doppelganger of himself -- a "black rag" entity from the alternate dimension.

Escape and Recapture (Booklet 019)
The newly transformed crew, now all Drivers, attempted to use their newfound PSI powers and the ship's Kaiser Projector to escape Space II. They succeeded in returning to normal space near Earth -- but their ordeal was far from over.
The TERRA I was immediately confronted by a Gray Guard fleet under Cosmoral Pina. The ship managed to break through the fleet but was heavily damaged in the process. Summacum Homan, intercepting the TERRA I, used Kaiser Projectors to send the ship back into Space II.
The TERRA I eventually reappeared near Earth, where it was boarded by Gray Guards. The crew was found unconscious, and the Gray Drivers aboard had been driven insane by the repeated dimensional transits. Queen Quendolain and her transformed crew were taken prisoner and confined in the secret laboratories of the Moon Dungeons on Luna.

The Comet of Oblivion: Quendolain's Breakout Attempt (Booklet 020)
While the charged Oxyd hurtled toward Earth as a doomsday object, Queen Quendolain -- imprisoned on Luna after being altered by Space II -- regained consciousness and her enhanced PSI powers. She influenced Summacum Lauder and his team, leading a breakout with her surviving crew. Her goal was to destroy Max von Valdec and end the Kaiser Force experiments that had caused the catastrophe.
However, the escape attempt failed. Quendolain and her crew were trapped and defeated by the Gray Guards, and she was recaptured. The TERRA I itself was mentioned in connection with its earlier fate -- as "the spacecraft that was swallowed along with Oxyd by Space II."

The Oxide Death Zone: Suicide Mission to Oxyd (Booklet 021)
With Oxyd continuing to hurtle toward Earth, emitting destructive Gray Flood waves, the Gray Guard command under Chan de Nouille dispatched five ships of Gray Drivers on a suicide mission: push the asteroid back into Space II or destroy it. The TERRA I was among these ships, now under the command of Queen Carmen.
Critically, the TERRA I carried prisoners -- Queen Quendolain and her transformed crew, along with Terranauts from the Moon Dungeons. Quendolain awakened aboard the ship and learned of the suicide mission. Using her enhanced PSI abilities, she contacted her former crew members and rallied them to cooperate.
As the TERRA I approached Oxyd, the ship experienced strange phenomena and instrument malfunctions. Queen Carmen ordered the shields lowered, relying on visual observation. In this chaos, Quendolain's crew -- the prisoners -- seized control of the ship, intending to fulfill the mission on their own terms.
Quendolain piloted the TERRA I through Oxyd's bizarre gravitational fields, navigating past the "outermost escape point" (German: aussersten Fluchtpunkt) -- the furthest point from which the ship could have turned back -- and landed on the asteroid's surface. The crew prepared to deploy destructive weapons.
Meanwhile, Summacum Homan authorized the construction of a Kaiser Gate to trap Oxyd. In the decisive moment, Cantos intervened, using his powers to send Oxyd into Space II. The TERRA I and its crew -- including Quendolain, Carmen, and all the Gray Drivers and Terranauts aboard -- were trapped on the asteroid as it vanished into the alternate dimension.

Phoenix: The Exiles of Oxyd (Booklet 032)
Within Space II, Oxyd was reshaped by Kaiser Force energies into a self-contained proto-universe that the survivors named Phoenix. The TERRA I, now stranded on this transformed asteroid, became the last outpost of human civilization in the alternate dimension.
The story of Booklet 032 opens aboard the TERRA I, where Queen Quendolain is injured during a tremor but miraculously heals, declaring herself and her former crew the "Changed of Phoenix." The ship became the focal point for the conflicts and alliances that would define the survivors' existence:
The HADES Crisis: The HADES, another Gray Guard spacecraft also stranded on Oxyd, sent a distress call. Centurio Claudette and other Changed urged Queen Carmen to help the HADES crew, but Carmen was suspicious. Survivors from the HADES -- including Queen Somar-Ellen and Hauptmann Ramus -- eventually reached the TERRA I, revealing themselves to be "Changed" as well.
Factional Violence: The old animosity between Gray Drivers and Terranauts -- "prisoners from the Moon Dungeons" -- erupted into open conflict aboard and around the ship. Daktar killed Queen Carmen, triggering a violent response from the Gray Drivers. A beam cannon was fired at the Changed, but instead of killing them, it unleashed monstrous creatures born from the collective hate-thoughts of the combatants. Only when the Gray Drivers heeded Quendolain's call to surrender their anger did the monsters dissipate.
The Pact: Queen Somar-Ellen and Hauptmann Ramus emerged from the TERRA I as the new commanders. They formed a pact with Quendolain and the Terranauts for peaceful coexistence. Somar-Ellen's diary entries recorded life aboard the stranded ship: the absence of hunger, the strange properties of the Phoenix environment, and the theory that Phoenix remained within Space II.
Cantos's Visit: When Cantos investigated Phoenix, he managed to land on the transformed asteroid and warned the survivors that their world was on a collision course with Rorqual. The survivors -- now deeply bonded with Phoenix -- refused to evacuate. A Super-Lodge organized from Rorqual by Llewellyn 709 telepathically contacted the Changed Ones and convinced them to redirect their world, averting the collision.

The Entity's Observation and the Final Transformation (Booklets 064-065)
By the time of Booklets 064-065, the TERRA I's role as a physical vessel had been largely superseded by the extraordinary evolution of its former crew. The ship is mentioned in passing in Booklet 064 as "Quendolain's former ship," a relic of the material world that the Changed Ones had transcended.
The Changed Ones -- including the composite beings of Quendolain-Daktar and Somar Ellen-Ramus -- had moved far beyond the confines of the ship, existing in symbiosis with Oxyd's energies. They formed Super-Lodges, diverted Oxyd from collision courses, encountered the alien Carmas, and ultimately merged their individual consciousnesses into a single entity that transformed Oxyd from a lethal energy sphere into a habitable planet orbiting within the Three-Sun System.
The TERRA I, along with all other physical structures on Oxyd, was subsumed into this transformation -- a vessel of war and imprisonment reborn as part of a living world.

Significance
The TERRA I occupies a unique symbolic position in the saga of Die Terranauten. It is a vessel that embodies transformation at every level:
1. From Military Ship to Prison to Ark
The TERRA I begins as a conventional Gray Guard warship, becomes a prison transport carrying Moon Dungeons inmates to a suicide mission, and ends as the last shelter of civilization for those stranded between dimensions. This progression mirrors the broader saga's themes of oppressive institutions giving way to new forms of community.
2. The Crucible of the Changed
The TERRA I is the location where the Changed of Phoenix first emerged. Quendolain's miraculous healing aboard the ship, the factional violence that spawned hate-thought monsters, the murder of Queen Carmen, and the eventual pact between enemies -- all of these events occurred on or around the TERRA I. The ship was the crucible in which former oppressors and their prisoners were forced to become something new.
3. Kaiser Force's Most Personal Consequence
While the MIDAS demonstrates the catastrophic danger of Kaiser Force as technology, the TERRA I demonstrates its consequences for individual human beings. The crew's involuntary transformation into Drivers, their repeated transits through Space II, Quendolain's imprisonment and liberation, and the ultimate transcendence of the Changed Ones -- all flow from a single moment when Summacum Homan's experiment went wrong. The TERRA I is Kaiser Force's most intimate victim and, paradoxically, its most redemptive outcome.
4. Bridge Between Factions
The TERRA I forced together three groups that would never have cooperated voluntarily: Gray Guard officers (Carmen, Somar-Ellen), the Changed/former crew (Quendolain, Claudette), and Terranaut prisoners (Daktar). Their violent conflicts and eventual peace aboard the ship prefigured the saga's ultimate argument: that unity across division -- even division between oppressor and oppressed -- is the only path to survival.

The TERRA I appears in 5 booklets of Die Terranauten (019, 020, 021, 032, 064). Its journey -- from Gray Guard warship to prison transport to stranded ark to cradle of transcendence -- is one of the saga's most concentrated expressions of the principle that catastrophe can become the seedbed of transformation, and that the worst consequences of reckless technology can, through collective sacrifice, be redeemed.
