Plot Summary

Llewellyn 709, a Terranaut leader forced to wear golden straps due to lethal PSI radiation, dreams of the JAMES COOK's destruction at the hands of Max von Valdec, fueling his distrust of Frost, Valdec's representative. The JAMES COOK is on a peace mission, guided by Super-Drivers Isis 31 and Thor 51 following the PSI trail of the Genessan Cantos to his home world, Genessos. Llewellyn 709 disapproves of the deceptive pursuit but sees it as necessary for making contact with other galactic civilizations.

Tensions rise on board between the Terranauts and the condescending Super-Drivers. Jana, the Witch physically assaults Frost after provocation from Isis 31. Frost seeks Llewellyn 709's help to quell the unrest, but a confrontation erupts in the central dome. Jana, the Witch and the IRMINSUL lodge attempt to overpower Isis 31 with PSI energy, but the Super-Driver withstands the attack. Llewellyn 709 reprimands the lodge, preventing further escalation, and confronts Frost about his control over the Super-Drivers.

The JAMES COOK continues its journey, but Llewellyn 709 suspects that they are following a false trail. He discovers a stowaway on board and eventually encounters Dawos, a Genessan who reveals that Genessos is in crisis due to the effects of Kaiser Force and that he deliberately misled the ship. Dawos agrees to summon Cantos, who appears and confirms the dire situation on Genessos. Isis 31 attacks Cantos, but he subdues her and reveals that the Super-Drivers are dangerous.

Llewellyn 709, along with Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern, accompanies Cantos to Genessos. They learn that the planet is dying and that the Genessans are struggling to maintain a protective shield. Llewellyn 709 experiences a terrifying vision of the planet's destruction. The group meets with other Genessans, and Llewellyn 709 senses their strong connection to Space II and a mysterious Entity. A powerful attack from Space II devastates the planet, but the Super-Lodge of Genessans and Steerers manages to contact the Space Road System and summon the Cosmic Spores to heal the damage. Llewellyn 709 learns about the history of the Genessans and their connection to the Baahrsans. He explores the planet and encounters Quasimodo, a Genessan who reveals more secrets about their world. The Cosmic Spores begin to repair the damage, and Cantos promises to provide coordinates for contacting supercivilizations. Llewellyn 709, Scanner Cloud, and Morgenstern return to the JAMES COOK, but Llewellyn 709 remains skeptical about the future.
