Plot Summary

The Entity, a member of a powerful, ancient race, travels to Hephaistos, an artificial world also known as the Galactic Archive, seeking the Connex Crystal held by a human. Meanwhile, aboard the JAMES COOK, tensions rise between the Terranauts and Frost, a representative of Valdec, and his Super-Driver clones, Thor 51 and Isis 31. The JAMES COOK arrives at Hephaistos, and Llewellyn 709 leads a delegation to the Pyramid of Knowledge, the supposed central power structure of the Entities.

During the journey to the Pyramid of Knowledge, the delegation encounters strange manifestations seemingly generated from their subconscious desires. Thor 51 disrupts one of these manifestations, angering Llewellyn 709. Jana disappears, and the delegation searches for her, discovering that Hephaistos is populated by seemingly mindless beings. Silent Chorp, tasked with uncovering Valdec's true plans, discovers that Frost intends to locate the Entities' central world and transmit its coordinates to Valdec for attack using the Kaiser Force Lance, a devastating new weapon hidden aboard the JAMES COOK.

Llewellyn 709 and the delegation discover that the Pyramid of Knowledge is not what they expected, and they are greeted by bizarre manifestations. Llewellyn 709 learns that Jana's disappearance is connected to the Connex Crystal and the Entity seeking it. Jana, under the influence of the Entity, is drawn towards it, while Llewellyn 709 and the others race to stop the Entity.

A confrontation ensues on a hilltop, where the Entity attempts to claim the Connex Crystal. Thor 51 attacks the Entity, resulting in his gruesome death. Llewellyn 709, aided by the New Steerers, manages to thwart the Entity and rescue Jana, securing the Connex Crystal. However, back on the JAMES COOK, Frost escapes with Isis 31 in a hidden Kaiser Force space fighter, intending to transmit the coordinates of Hephaistos to Valdec. Silent Chorp attempts to stop them, but Frost and Isis 31 escape, causing the JAMES COOK to break apart. Silent Chorp and other surviving Terranauts escape in a Ringo, leaving behind the wreckage of the JAMES COOK and the bodies of Sardina Giccomo, Serge-Serge Suvez, and Altamont O'Hale.
