Plot Summary

David terGorden, Claude Farrell, Zandra van Heissig, and young Markham launch from Rorqual in the repaired lifeboat TASCA to reach the mother ship. They encounter a PSI warning just before leaving Rorqual's atmosphere, advising them to suppress their PSI abilities. Upon docking with the TASCA, they find the two remaining Drivers, Morgan and Terry, dead but perfectly preserved. Markham triggers a phenomenon, and the minds of Morgan and Terry temporarily inhabit his body. They reveal that Rorqual is in Space II, the black sun is a Black Hole leading back to normal space, and the planet emits a PSI field that caused their initial crash. They urge David to return to Earth and fight Valdec and the Council.

The narrative shifts to Valdec in normal space, aboard the SAMARKAND, a massive Gray Guard ship. He is preparing a punitive expedition to Ginger in the Kashmir System, a vital raw material supply route. Valdec intends to make an example of Ginger to deter other rebellions. He tasks Queen Ganshe, an Alpha Courier, to deliver orders to Cosmoral Fay Gray to reinforce his fleet with 100 Guard ships.

Meanwhile, the JOHN REED, carrying David, Zandra, Asen-Ger, and Queen Mandorla, intercepts the courier ship OMEGA-32. The Terranauts use their PSI powers to subdue Queen Ganshe and extract information about Valdec's plans and Fay Gray's fleet. They also discover four imprisoned Drivers aboard the OMEGA-32 and free them. They alter Ganshe's orders so that Fay Gray will maintain her waiting position, reducing Valdec's armada.

On Ginger, Gua Ho, leader of the Pearls of Ginger, prepares for an uprising. He uses his knowledge of the local environment to outwit the Council forces. The Pearls launch an attack on Güldenstein, a strategic island, using a captured hovercraft, Hare, and Protop to disable Legion vehicles. A vacuum zone suddenly appears, devastating the island and killing many rebels. Simultaneously, David, in a capsule launched from the JOHN REED, enters Ginger's atmosphere. He experiences intense pain from Kaiser Force interference and crash-lands near Gulbenkayn.

David is rescued by Li Shen and other Pearls. He learns that the vacuum zone destroyed the Guard data center, creating an opportunity to capture the space forts. David warns them about Valdec's approaching fleet. The Pearls, led by Gua Ho, successfully seize the space forts. Valdec, learning of the rebellion and the presence of David terGorden, orders an attack on Ginger. However, gravity waves, triggered by Kaiser Force, decimate his fleet. The Terranauts destroy Cosmodrom to prevent it from falling into Council hands. Valdec, defeated, orders a retreat and imposes a quarantine on the Kashmir System. The Terranauts escape to Rorqual, leaving Ginger a free planet.
