Thor von Riglan

Biography

Thor von Riglan is a young member of the Riglan Clan on the volcanic planet Lagund. He possesses precognitive abilities, which he refers to as the "Light of Realization." These visions often guide his actions, though they are initially met with skepticism by his clan. His life takes a dramatic turn when he hears a telepathic cry for help from Jelina von Riglan, a Clan Sister presumed dead. Driven by his visions and a strong sense of duty, Thor embarks on a perilous journey to rescue her from the Sky Watchers.

With the help of his Clan Brother, Falk von Riglan, Thor escapes confinement and sets out for the Sky City atop Krakata. Their journey is fraught with danger, including accidents, attacks by creatures called Pruuts, and volcanic eruptions. Despite facing numerous hardships and even collapsing from exhaustion, Thor's unwavering determination, fueled by his visions of Jelina's impending sacrifice, keeps him moving forward.

Tragically, Falk sacrifices himself to protect Thor and Jelina during their escape from the Sky Watchers. Rescued by the crew of the STORTIS, Thor and Jelina reluctantly agree to become Drivers to help the ship reach Parisienne, a planet in dire need of medicine. During their first transition through Space II, they experience a terrifying vision of the STORTIS's destruction. Despite this ominous premonition, they successfully navigate the ship.

On the STORTIS, Thor and Jelina become entangled in a plot involving Edison Tontor, the resurrected former General Manager of the League of Free Worlds, and the smuggling of mistletoes to Parisienne. Thor's precognitive abilities prove crucial in exposing Tontor's schemes and the involvement of the Duke of Britt in the Mistel Syndicate. After thwarting Tontor, Thor and Jelina join the Terranauts, embarking on a new chapter in their lives.

Thor 51

Biography

Thor 51 is a Super-Driver clone created and conditioned to serve Frost, a representative of Max von Valdec. He is arrogant, aggressive, and fiercely loyal to Frost. He accompanies Llewellyn 709 and other Terranauts on the JAMES COOK's mission to Genessos and Hephaistos.

On Hephaistos, Thor 51's actions reveal the artificial nature of the world and create tension with Llewellyn 709. During a confrontation with an Entity seeking the Connex Crystal, Thor 51 attacks the Entity, resulting in his own gruesome death. His actions ultimately fail to prevent Frost from attempting to transmit the coordinates of Hephaistos to Valdec.

Notes

  • The name "Thor" is used for two entirely separate characters within the saga, leading to potential confusion.
  • Thor von Riglan's precognitive abilities and his relationship with Jelina suggest a deeper connection to the overall narrative, though his role after joining the Terranauts remains largely unexplored.
  • Thor 51's death on Hephaistos highlights the ruthlessness of Valdec's plans and the expendability of his clones.
