Plot Summary

The story opens with a Vokus-Ry, a shape-shifting spy for the Varen Navtem, infiltrating Shondyke/Neunfarben to gather intelligence. She observes Scanner Cloud and Morgenstern arriving, noting their unique abilities and the presence of the Green Partner. Meanwhile, on Luna/Lunaport, Chan de Nouille grapples with the escalating chaos on Earth, a result of the growing conflict between the F.F.D.E. rebels and the corporations. She plans to use David terGorden, the new Lord Colonel, as a mediator, but faces resistance from her Cosmorals, particularly Gambelher, who advocates for military intervention.

David terGorden is intercepted in the Sol System by Chan de Nouille and shown the Gray Guard's military might. Chan reveals her plan to crush the rebellion on Earth, overriding David's objections. Desperate to prevent a bloodbath, David proposes a risky plan: he will use Yggdrasil to attempt a breakthrough to Shondyke/Neunfarben and negotiate with the Clone-Queens, hoping to regain their support and avert the Earth attack. Chan agrees, postponing the military operation.

Morgenstern and Scanner Cloud are sent to Urdbrunnen, a vital node in the space-time stroboscope network, to investigate its failure. They meet Luther Straightwire and Mi Lai, learning more about the repair of the space roads and the role of the Green Partners. During this time, Margit Aacht, a Shadow agent unknowingly carrying an antimatter bomb, accompanies David terGorden to Shondyke. They arrive on Shondyke, where Scanner Cloud reveals Aacht's true nature and the bomb she carries. The bomb is removed, and Aacht is freed from her conditioning, joining the Clone-Queens. David terGorden, Scanner Cloud, and Morgenstern then travel to Urdbrunnen to fix the damaged space-time stroboscope.

At Urdbrunnen, they discover that chrome beetles are eating the steering tree, causing the disruption. Scanner Cloud, with the help of David terGorden and Morgenstern, uses his psionic abilities to lure the beetles to Glimmer, a planet where they can help control the overgrowth of the Psi Ulema. With Urdbrunnen restored, David terGorden returns to Earth. Back on Shondyke/Neunfarben, Luther Straightwire reveals to David terGorden that the Vokus-Ry is there to transmit a message to the Varen Navtem. David terGorden sends a message of apology and a promise to end the use of Kaiser Force technology. David terGorden returns to Earth to face the challenges of his position as Lord Colonel. Morgenstern and Mi Lai finally find romance.
