Plot Summary

Cantos, a Genessaner, meets with David terGorden, Asen-Ger, and Llewellyn 709 aboard a Ringo Spacecraft to discuss the increasing Kaiser Force flights and their danger. Cantos reveals his plan to convince a powerful Earth representative of the danger by taking them on a research expedition. David terGorden suggests Chan de Nouille as the ideal candidate.

On Earth, Chan de Nouille, also known as Helena Koraitschowa, is interrupted during a game with her crocodile by Gerna, a Gray Guard captain and her lover. Gerna suddenly falls under PSI influence and abducts Chan de Nouille, carrying her to the roof and launching her into space.

Chan de Nouille awakens in a void, confronted by Cantos, who reveals he orchestrated her abduction. He explains his intention to show her the consequences of Kaiser Force technology by taking her to a dying galaxy far outside the Milky Way. He reveals his knowledge of her dual identity and her connection to the Gray Guards.

During their journey, Cantos and Chan de Nouille engage in philosophical debates about humanity's relationship with nature and the dangers of unchecked technological advancement. Cantos shows her the destruction caused by a civilization's reliance on Kaiser Force-like technology, leading to the creation of a "Black Universe." They travel to this Black Universe, experiencing its chaotic and mind-bending nature.

Inside the Black Universe, Chan de Nouille and Cantos confront the consequences of their actions and the potential for universal destruction. Chan de Nouille initially resists the experience, but eventually begins to understand the interconnectedness of the universe and the dangers of unchecked technological advancement. They discover that the Black Universe is a result of a civilization's reliance on a technology similar to Kaiser Force, which led to the destruction of their galaxy and the creation of a chaotic realm where the laws of physics are suspended.

Ultimately, Cantos and Chan de Nouille find a way to escape the Black Universe by exploiting a connection between it and the normal universe through Kaiser Force technology. They return to Earth, but not before witnessing the destruction of a Gray Guard super-battleship, a consequence of the Kaiser Force-induced instability. Chan de Nouille, now aware of the true danger, is left to decide how to use her power to influence the Council and prevent further catastrophes. The story ends with Chan de Nouille returning to Earth, forever changed by her experience, and Cantos questioning whether the journey was truly worth it.
