Plot Summary
Quendolain and Daktar, now merged in mind and spirit, along with Somar-Ellen and Ramus, struggle to understand their existence within Oxyd, a sentient energy sphere threatening the universe. The Entity, an ancient observer, watches their progress, contemplating humanity's role in this cosmic crisis. Quendolain and Daktar attempt to create an "inner model" to comprehend Oxyd's chaotic reality, realizing that their perceptions are shaped by their past experiences and biases. They encounter other exiles, including Somar-Ellen and Ramus, who have achieved a unique form of unity.
The group works together to master Oxyd's energies and determine their position in the universe. Quendolain leads the exiles in forming a Super-Lodge, a powerful psychic union, to extend their awareness beyond Oxyd's boundaries. They discover that Oxyd is hurtling through space, threatening to collide with a star system. Quendolain manages to divert Oxyd from its course, pushing it outside the Milky Way galaxy. However, this effort leaves her and the others weakened.
Quendolain connects with her "second self" in Space II, gaining new strength and insights. They encounter a crashed alien spaceship occupied by the Carmas, a race with a unique form of communication. The Carmas are hostile, believing that the humans are responsible for Oxyd's destructive path. The exiles learn that Oxyd is heading towards the "Three-Sun System," home to the Carmas. The Entity observes the situation, waiting to see if humanity will prove worthy of survival. The Carmas are doomed as Oxyd approaches their system.
The exiles, led by Quendolain, must decide whether to intervene and attempt to save the Carmas, despite their hostility and the potential for self-destruction. The booklet ends with the Three-Sun System becoming the proving ground for humanity's moral and intellectual capacities, as the Entity continues its observation.
