Plot Summary

The Entity observes the impending destruction of the Three-Sun System by Oxyd, a lethal energy sphere created by humanity's Kaiser Force experiments. The Entity respects the peaceful Carmas but despises humanity, though it acknowledges the superiority of the humans within Oxyd. The Carmas, led by Kerym Sahs, desperately seek a solution, while Bars, the fleet coordinator, attempts to destroy Oxyd with his fleet, which ultimately fails.

Meanwhile, on board a captured Carma Cruiser within Oxyd, Quendolain and her Changed Ones encounter a hostile Carma crew, who believe the humans are responsible for Oxyd. Daktar is injured in an initial attack, but Quendolain subdues the Carma attacker. Using their combined PSI powers in a Super-Lodge, the Changed Ones attempt to understand and reason with the Carmas, discovering their distorted view of humanity. They learn that the Carmas were informed that humans are bloodthirsty flesh-eaters.

Quendolain decides to awaken the rest of the Carma crew, but they are met with the same hostility. The Changed Ones allow themselves to be captured to gain the Carmas' trust and assist in piloting the ship. As they attempt to leave Oxyd, the Carma Fleet launches a second attack, deploying "planet-eaters" – weapons that initiate uncontrolled nuclear fusion. One of these weapons strikes the Carma Cruiser, but the Super-Lodge manages to shield the ship, realizing the planet-eaters are related to Kaiser Force and draw energy from Space II.

The Super-Lodge forces the Carma Cruiser back into Oxyd and reconnects with the remaining Changed Ones in the caves. They realize their dependence on Oxyd for their powers and survival. A debate ensues among the Changed Ones about whether to seek total unification with Oxyd or leave it to a single individual. Meanwhile, the Carma government, led by Kerym Sahs, decides to sacrifice the planet Cohrs to create a dimensional gate to destroy Oxyd. The Carma Fleet attacks Cohrs, setting it on a collision course with Oxyd. However, the resulting dimensional distortion threatens to consume everything.

In the final moments, the Super-Lodge is severed from Oxyd as the Carma Cruiser is drawn into the dimensional gate. The Changed Ones find themselves in a paradoxical space, where they merge their minds into a single entity. This entity, now one with Oxyd, wills a new beginning, transforming Oxyd into a habitable planet that replaces Cohrs in the Three-Sun System. Kerym Sahs and the Carmas are invited to settle on the new Oxyd, which has become a life-giving world. The Entity observes these events and concludes that humanity is more complex than it initially believed, deciding to continue observation rather than immediate destruction.
