Ship First: 001 - The Heir of Power

BELFAST

Belfast

Status: Abandoned by David terGorden on Rubin; subsequently investigated by Gray Guards

"terGordens altes Schiff, ein Frachter namens BELFAST, wurde von ihm verlassen."
-- Queen Mandorla, reporting to Fay Gray (Booklet 001)

The BELFAST is a Driver freighter that serves as David terGorden's ship at the opening of Die Terranauten. It is the vessel that carries the young Driver -- then known as Stardust-Dave -- to the remote planet Rubin, where the saga's events are set into motion. When the BELFAST suffers damage to its oxygen supply and is forced into port at Lakehurst for over a week of repairs, the delay strands Dave on Rubin and precipitates the chain of events that reveals his identity as the Heir of Power. Dave abandons the BELFAST after the disaster at Bortzynn, transferring to the GDANSK to flee toward Syrta -- and never returns. The BELFAST thus represents the last remnant of Dave's former life as an anonymous, wandering spacefarer before destiny overtakes him.

Overview

The BELFAST is a civilian Driver freighter operating along the outer trade routes of the Milky Way in the late 25th century. Like most Driver ships of its era, the BELFAST relies on a Lodge of psionically gifted Drivers to navigate through Space II for faster-than-light travel, powered by Mistletoe Blossoms harvested from Yggdrasil.

The ship is described as a freighter (Frachter) -- a working merchant vessel rather than a military craft. Its scheduled route from Rubin was bound for Omni Beta, a destination described as lying in the opposite direction from Syrta. This detail suggests the BELFAST operated along the galactic rim, servicing remote worlds at the edge of human-settled space.

The BELFAST's mechanical state at the time of its sole appearance is precarious: it has suffered damage to its oxygen supply system, requiring an overhaul of more than one week at the Lakehurst spaceport on Rubin. The GDANSK, another freighter, arrived on Rubin at the same time as the damaged BELFAST, providing Dave with the opportunity to transfer ships.

CharacterRoleNotes
Stardust-Dave (David terGorden)Driver, Lodge memberDave served as a member of the BELFAST's Driver Lodge before abandoning the ship on Rubin. His enemies -- agents of the Kaiser Corporation -- learned of his Lodge membership through the merchant Smellinger.

The identities of the BELFAST's other Lodge members, including its Lodge Master, are not recorded in the saga. Dave's transfer to the GDANSK required formal admission into a new Lodge, suggesting the BELFAST's crew was unaware of his true identity and played no further role in events.

History

Arrival on Rubin (December 2499)

The BELFAST arrives at Rubin, the second planet of Gotham's Star, a red jungle world on the edge of the Milky Way. The ship puts into port at Lakehurst -- the only human settlement on the planet -- due to damage to its oxygen supply. The overhaul requires more than a week, stranding its crew on this remote and sparsely populated world.

During this enforced layover, Stardust-Dave encounters the merchant Smellinger, who persuades him to visit Bortzynn, an alien city recently discovered in the jungle. Smellinger's invitation is a trap: Dave is lured into Bortzynn to be captured or killed by agents of the Kaiser Corporation, who have identified him as David terGorden, the heir to the Biotroniks Corporation. Smellinger is murdered during the expedition, and Dave barely escapes the alien ruins with the help of a mysterious blue light.

Abandonment (December 2499)

Returning to Lakehurst after his harrowing escape from Bortzynn, Dave makes a critical decision: he cannot return to the BELFAST. His enemies have been informed -- through Smellinger -- of his membership in the BELFAST's Driver Lodge, and will certainly be watching the ship. The BELFAST has become a trap.

"He was aware that he must not under any circumstances return to the BELFAST. His enemies had presumably been informed through Smellinger of his membership in the Driver Lodge of the BELFAST and would be watching the ship."

Dave resolves to sign on with another Driver ship and go underground. At a tavern in Lakehurst, he encounters Dime Mow, a Lodge member on the GDANSK -- a freighter that had arrived on Rubin together with the damaged BELFAST. Mow introduces Dave to Lodge Master Hadersen Wells, and Dave formally requests admission into the GDANSK's Lodge. When Wells asks why he wishes to transfer, Dave explains:

"I want to go to Syrta. A friend is expecting me there. The BELFAST's destination is Omni Beta -- exactly the opposite direction."

Dave recites the traditional Driver admission oath -- "No crime drives me, no obligation hinders me. I am free for the stars." -- and is accepted into the GDANSK's crew. The BELFAST departs Rubin the following evening, without Dave, bound for Omni Beta.

Gray Guard Investigation

After Dave's disappearance, the Gray Guards investigate. Queen Mandorla, personal confidante of Max von Valdec, reports to Fay Gray that a Guard ship has landed on Rubin and conducted inquiries. The investigation reveals that Dave has abandoned the BELFAST and signed on with one of five freighters that departed Rubin during the relevant period. Mandorla describes the BELFAST as "terGorden's old ship" (terGordens altes Schiff), confirming that Dave had been with the vessel for some time prior to the saga's events.

The Gray Guards' pursuit subsequently shifts to the five departing freighters, and the BELFAST itself passes out of the narrative.

Significance

The BELFAST occupies a small but symbolically important position in Die Terranauten. It is the ship of Dave's old life -- the anonymous, wandering existence of a freelance Driver drifting between the stars. The moment Dave decides he cannot return to the BELFAST is the moment his former identity as "Stardust-Dave" begins to die and his destiny as David terGorden, the Heir of Power, begins to take hold.

The BELFAST's mechanical failure -- the damaged oxygen supply -- is the inciting incident of the entire saga. Without this breakdown, Dave would never have been stranded on Rubin, never met Smellinger, never visited Bortzynn, and never been forced to flee to Syrta, where Llewellyn 709 declares him the Heir of Power and ignites a galactic rebellion. The BELFAST's oxygen damage is, in narrative terms, the butterfly's wing that sets the entire 99-booklet saga in motion.

The ship is also identified in the IDEAS" class="text-slate-dim hover:text-cream/80 transition-colors border-b border-dashed border-white/10 hover:border-white/20">STORYIDEAS file as one of six vessels proposed for an anthology concept ("The Ships of the Terranauten"), alongside the GDANSK, MIDAS, FUGGER, SOMASA, and JAMES COOK -- suggesting untold stories about the BELFAST's Lodge, its route to Omni Beta, and the crew Dave left behind.
