Lancia

Status: Abandoned by Valdec; returned to indigenous Humo population

A world bathed in the lethal radiation of the Mordersonne -- the Murder Sun -- where the Kaiser Corporation built an industrial fortress and a deposed tyrant rebuilt his empire from nothing.

Lancia is a planet in the Calina System, located in the 17th Stellar Province of the Terran Star Empire, approximately four hundred and seventy-six light-years from Earth. Orbiting the unstable star Calina -- known colloquially as the Murder Sun (German: Mordersonne) -- Lancia is a harsh, radiation-scarred world that served as the site of the Kaiser-Lancia-Komplex, a Kaiser Corporation industrial outpost. Following Max von Valdec's exile from Earth in 2502, Lancia became the base from which he rebuilt his military power, constructed the steel city of Kaisergrad, and launched raids across the Rim Worlds -- earning him the epithet "Warlord of Lancia."

Physical Description and Environment

Lancia orbits Calina, a star classified in imperial records as a Mordersonne -- a "murder sun" -- whose radiation output is dangerously unstable and periodically lethal. The star's erratic behavior creates severe environmental hazards on the planet's surface, including intense radiation storms and electromagnetic interference that disrupts both technology and psionic abilities.

The planet's surface is characterized by:

  • Industrial zones: The Kaiser-Lancia-Komplex dominates the settled areas, with the steel city of Kaisergrad serving as the primary settlement and administrative center.
  • Gandhi Lake (Gandhi-See): A lake to the north of Kaisergrad where the Gandhi clan, a community of indigenous Humo colonists, lives. The lake area represents one of the few zones of habitation outside the industrial complex.
  • Laser defense perimeter: Kaisergrad is ringed by laser positions providing space defense capability.
  • Protop-walled structures: The city's buildings are constructed from Protop, a transparent armored material, which proved vulnerable to the anomalous "transparency effect" caused by Space II energy disruptions.

The Calina System also contains the planet Irmussen, which hosts a solar research station and microwave transmitters, and the moon Blacksmith, the outermost satellite of the Calina star. Many colonies exist within fifty light-years of Calina, making Lancia strategically positioned for raiding operations across the Rim Worlds.

Civilization and Population

The Humo Colonists

Lancia's indigenous population consists primarily of Humo colonists -- members of the lowest caste in the Terran Star Empire's rigid social hierarchy. These colonists live under the dominion of the Kaiser Corporation through the Kaiser-Lancia-Komplex, an industrial administration that exploits both the planet's resources and its people.

The most notable Humo resident is San Chornon, a native of Lancia who harbors deep hatred for the Kaiser Corporation and its exploitation of his world. Chornon later plays a pivotal role in the planet's history when he voluntarily surrenders his body to Scanner Cloud, a Psyter, to enable the destruction of a Threshold Field Generator that was tearing Kaisergrad apart with energies from Space II (Booklet 066). After Valdec's eventual departure, Chornon remains on Lancia and serves as a witness to the destruction the warlord left behind (Booklet 079).

The Gandhi clan, living around Gandhi Lake, represents another community of colonists. The corporation Terraform had plans to exploit Gandhi Lake, further threatening the indigenous population's way of life.

The Kaiser-Lancia-Komplex

The Kaiser-Lancia-Komplex is the Kaiser Corporation's administrative and industrial apparatus on Lancia. Before Valdec's arrival, it was managed by:

RolePersonFate
GeneralManagTosten PhibasArrested by Sholar; killed by Prometheus 107 (Booklet 066)
Security ManagerMaxwell SholarKilled by Prometheus 107 when he attempted to use a nuclear grenade (Booklet 066)
Finance ManagerKirkattuArrested alongside Phibas by Sholar (Booklet 066)
Maxwell Sholar, Valdec's cousin, ran the complex's security with paranoid brutality. When news of Valdec's fall from power reached Lancia, Sholar demanded a declaration of solidarity from the other administrators, arrested those who resisted, and effectively seized control -- only to be killed by Valdec's own super-Driver when the warlord arrived in person.

History

Pre-Exile: Corporate Colony (pre-2502)

Before Max von Valdec's exile, Lancia functioned as a standard Kaiser Corporation industrial colony. The Kaiser-Lancia-Komplex managed resource extraction and the Humo labor force under corporate authority. The planet's remote location in the 17th Stellar Province and its harsh conditions under the Murder Sun made it a marginal but strategically useful outpost -- close enough to numerous colonial worlds to serve as a hub, yet far enough from Earth to operate with minimal oversight.

Valdec's Arrival (December 2499 / late 2502)

Following his ouster as Council Chairman and his escape from Earth aboard an Omega-class battle cruiser (Booklet 054), Max von Valdec fled into exile heading for Sarym. After a disastrous emergency transit through Space II during operations near Sarym, Valdec was stranded in Space I -- a symbolic plane of existence. Scanner Cloud helped him return to his funnel ship, the REGENT, but the vessel had suffered critical energy loss.

Needing to refuel and regroup, Valdec set course for Lancia. As his fighter approached the planet, it was caught in a PSI interference field generated by the transparency effect -- an unstable zone caused by Space II energies leaking through a blocked Threshold Field Generator in Kaisergrad. The fighter crashed. Valdec, accompanied by super-Driver clones Prometheus 107 and Isis 31, ejected and landed near Kaisergrad (Booklet 066).

Upon reaching the city, Valdec found it in chaos. Maxwell Sholar had arrested the legitimate administrators and was preparing to fight what he believed were Terranaut intruders -- with a nuclear grenade. Prometheus 107 killed both Sholar and Tosten Phibas, clearing the way for Valdec to seize control of the entire complex. When Valdec learned that the Guard base on Lancia had been dissolved following his fall, he decided to make the planet his permanent base and resume Kaiser Force research there.

The Warlord Period (2502-2503)

With Kaisergrad under his control, Valdec did what he had always done: he rebuilt. The exile period on Lancia represents one of the most remarkable demonstrations of Valdec's survival instinct and organizational genius.

Building the Base: Valdec transformed Kaisergrad from a corporate outpost into a military stronghold. He constructed a steel city, established laser defense perimeters, and assembled a private fleet of Kaiser Force-powered warships, including the funnel ships REGENT, KAISER, and ZIOLKOWSKI. Master Builder Zarkophin continued Kaiser Force research, developing new technologies including the Zarkophin Shield -- a device designed to collect and radiate Kaiser Force energy (Booklet 068).

The Raids: To supply his growing military operation, Valdec launched systematic plundering raids against colonial worlds that the Star Empire had effectively abandoned -- worlds beyond 500 light-years from Earth. His forces, spearheaded by super-Driver clones Prometheus 107, Isis 31, and Osiris 84, terrorized the Rim Worlds:

  • Krisan (in the Mephisto System): Valdec's forces dismantled industrial plants, confiscated food supplies, and enslaved portions of the population. Local leaders such as Sheik Daud were coerced into accepting Valdec as their master. The Terranaut ship Irminsul, on a diplomatic mission to persuade Krisan to join the Alliance of Free Worlds, arrived to find the colony already stripped. Morgenstern, Myranda Llan, and Can Katzenstein were captured; Llan and Katzenstein were killed by the super-Drivers (Booklet 067).
  • Multiple colonial worlds: Valdec systematically raided colonies for industrial equipment, food stores, and human labor, stripping the abandoned Rim Worlds of everything useful to fuel his war machine.

Personnel: Valdec's inner circle on Lancia included:

PersonRole
FrostIntelligence and operations manager
ZarkophinMaster Builder; Kaiser Force research
GlaucenSecurity manager (killed by Kaiser Force flash on Frantic, Booklet 068)
Queen YazminMilitary commander; captain of the REGENT
Queen MyraGray Guard commander aboard the REGENT
Prometheus 107Super-Driver clone; primary weapon
Isis 31Super-Driver clone
Osiris 84Super-Driver clone; used to subjugate colonies

The Transparency Effect (2502)

Shortly before Valdec's arrival, an anomalous "transparency effect" began engulfing Kaisergrad. The Protop walls of buildings dissolved into transparency, revealing the city's inner workings and creating widespread panic. This phenomenon was caused by energies leaking from Space II through a blocked junction point in the space-road system -- the blockage itself caused by Valdec's damaged Kaiser Force generator during his emergency transit.

Scanner Cloud, operating from Shondyke, contacted the Humo San Chornon and asked to inhabit his body. Chornon agreed, and Cloud -- now merged with Chornon -- traveled with the Banshee Merlin II to Kaisergrad to destroy the Threshold Field Generator responsible for the disruption. Merlin merged with the space lanes of Space II, and Cloud merged with the rainbow vortex, completing a transcendent transformation. The transparency effect was resolved, but the episode demonstrated the dangerous instability of Lancia's position at the intersection of normal space and Space II (Booklet 066).

The Electronic Assassin (2503)

Valdec's enemies dispatched an Electronic Assassin -- a killer computer -- to eliminate him. The assassin infiltrated the ZIOLKOWSKI and made multiple attempts on Valdec's life. When Morgenstern was captured after stowing away on a freighter leaving Krisan, the Electronic Assassin caused chaos aboard the REGENT, enabling Morgenstern's escape in a Ringo shuttle (Booklet 068).

The assassin continued its pursuit. During Kaiser Force experiments on Lancia, a catastrophic Kaiser Force flash engulfed the Aron System, transforming the Guard base on Frantic into a protoplasmic mass and killing Security Manager Glaucen. The Electronic Assassin attempted to kill Valdec on Frantic, but he escaped in the REGENT-One. Queen No and the child operative Angel confronted Valdec directly, but Angel was killed by a super-Driver clone who rescued Valdec. The REGENT fled the Aron System as Cosmic Spores consumed the region, creating a Dead Zone (Booklet 068).

Valdec's Departure and Abandonment (2503)

Valdec eventually departed Lancia, leaving his base abandoned. The exact circumstances of his departure are not fully detailed, but by the time of Booklet 079 (October 2503), the base was empty. Valdec resurfaced disguised as "Jeng-Jeng," First Officer aboard the tramp ship STORTIS, where he was eventually identified by Edison Tontor (Booklet 080). He later orchestrated his dramatic return to Earth through clone infiltration, seizing power and establishing the Second Reich of Humanity as the self-proclaimed Kaiser of Berlin (Booklets 085-089).

Investigation and Aftermath (October 2503)

Oltan Crench, a Gray Guard lead pilot, was dispatched to Lancia in the Calina System to investigate Valdec's abandoned base. He found Kaisergrad deserted, with dead Humo colonists bearing witness to the destruction of the warlord's occupation. San Chornon, still living on the planet, revealed the scope of Valdec's devastation and acknowledged the aid that Scanner Cloud had provided during the transparency crisis. The investigation confirmed that Valdec had departed and was operating elsewhere -- a finding that proved prescient when Valdec's forces soon after launched their infiltration of Earth (Booklet 079).

Significance

Lancia's role in the saga of Die Terranauten is primarily as the crucible of Max von Valdec's second rise to power. The planet embodies several of the saga's central themes:

Corporate exploitation: Before Valdec's arrival, Lancia was already a world of suffering -- Humo colonists laboring under the Kaiser Corporation's industrial apparatus, governed by a paranoid security manager and abandoned by a star empire that had lost interest in its distant provinces. Valdec did not create Lancia's misery; he inherited and intensified it.

The abandoned Rim Worlds: Lancia exemplifies the Star Empire's failure to protect its colonial populations. When the Empire withdrew support for worlds beyond 500 light-years from Earth, it left millions of colonists -- mostly Humos -- vulnerable to exactly the kind of warlordism Valdec practiced. His raids on Krisan and other colonies were possible precisely because no one else was defending them.

Rebuilding from nothing: The Lancia exile arc (Booklets 066-068) demonstrates Valdec's most formidable quality: the refusal to accept defeat. Stripped of his titles, his fleet crippled, crash-landing on a murder-sun world with only two super-Drivers at his side, he systematically rebuilt a military force capable of eventually reconquering Earth itself. As the Valdec character study notes, this arc "has the structure of a survival narrative -- a leader refusing to surrender, keeping his people alive on a murder-sun world, raiding for resources because the Star Empire has abandoned the colonies it claimed to protect."

The intersection of dimensions: The transparency effect and the Threshold Field Generator crisis reveal Lancia as a place where the boundaries between normal space and Space II are dangerously thin -- a fitting metaphor for a world where the line between civilization and barbarism has all but dissolved.
