The Emperor of Berlin
Der Kaiser von Berlin
Plot Summary
Max von Valdec, now the self-proclaimed "Kaiser of Berlin," consolidates his power over Earth using the Kaiser Force. He dreams of galactic conquest, but his tyrannical rule alienates even his closest allies. Frost, Valdec's Security Manager, is tasked with suppressing all opposition, discovering that the Council of Corporations never truly controlled Earth. Meanwhile, the Pure Halvcwar, a Sheyatsche, is sent by the Varen Navtem as a final warning to humanity about the dangers of Kaiser Force and its effects on the High Space. He arrives on a devastated Earth, a testament to humanity's destructive tendencies.
The Pure Halvcwar confronts Valdec in Berlin, demonstrating his immense power by effortlessly dismantling military forces and infrastructure. He delivers a stern warning about the dangers of Kaiser Force and the impending consequences. Claude Farrell, a Terranaut Driver, experiences the full force of Valdec's new regime when a Kaiser Force attack targets Adzharis, a vital source of mistletoe for Driver space travel. Morgenstern, a Steersman, intervenes to prevent the destruction of the Urbaum on Adzharis, revealing Valdec's plan to disrupt Driver space travel.
The MARTIN LUTHER KING, a freighter carrying Drivers, is attacked by Valdec's forces, and the surviving Drivers are manipulated by Clones to become psionic weapons. They are sent to Adzharis to destroy the Urbaum. Morgenstern, with the help of Claude Farrell and the Dragon Witches, thwarts the attack, sacrificing himself to contain the psionic threat.
The Varen Navtem are growing impatient with humanity's recklessness. Luther Straightwire and Scanner Cloud, Lenkers of the Old Forest, discuss the situation and the potential for drastic action. The Pure Halvcwar's demonstration of power on Earth fails to deter Valdec, leading to the deployment of a Vacuum Squid as a final warning. The story ends with Valdec facing increasing pressure from both extraterrestrial forces and internal dissent, leaving the future of humanity uncertain.
