Driver Pirates
Treiber-Piraten
Plot Summary
Thor von Riglan and Falk von Riglan are determined to rescue Jelina von Riglan from the Sky Watchers, who plan to sacrifice her atop Krakata. Thor has a vision of their journey, seeing themselves collapsing on the path to the Sky City. Despite the vision, they proceed, attempting to circumvent fate by avoiding the road itself. Meanwhile, on the STORTIS, Edison Tontor (in the guise of Kirju Haapala) plots his rise to power, feigning illness to manipulate the crew. The STORTIS travels to Heinlein IV in search of medical assistance for Haapala.
Thor and Falk eventually succumb to the effects of the "Breath of Death" (Etnon gas) near the Sky City, but are found by the Sky Watchers and taken to their city. They are initially treated as converts, but after Thor attempts to explore, they are imprisoned. Meanwhile, the Ringo, piloted by Jeng-Jeng, lands on Heinlein IV, discovering the Sky Watchers preparing to sacrifice Jelina. The crew, including Laacon Merlander, Siri Lankard, and Ain Lavalle, debate whether to intervene, ultimately deciding to rescue Jelina due to her latent Driver abilities.
Thor and Falk escape their imprisonment and confront the Sky Watchers, but Falk is killed. Thor rescues Jelina from the pyre, aided by the arrival of the Ringo crew. They are taken aboard the STORTIS, where Artuur Morgh reveals their true destination: Parisienne, a planet in need of medicine, and that they need Thor and Jelina to help them navigate through Space II. Edison Tontor sees the arrival of Thor and Jelina as an opportunity to further his own goals.
Thor and Jelina reluctantly agree to become Drivers. During the transition through Space II, they experience a vision of the STORTIS being destroyed by amorphous phantoms. Despite this, they successfully navigate the ship through Space II. The booklet ends with the crew aware of the impending doom of the STORTIS, but still heading towards Parisienne.
