Merun

Status: Presumed extinct (homeworld destroyed 2499-2500)

On Zoe, Cruben the Heard, a member of the native Merun race, undertakes a journey to the border mountains to gather fragments of Lichtauge for his Stock.
-- Booklet 011, "Planet of the Lodge Masters"

The Merun (German: Merun; also referred to collectively as Meruns) are an indigenous insectoid species native to the planet Zoe in the Spilter System. They are the only known non-human intelligent species to have inhabited Zoe prior to the arrival of the Drivers and their human colonists. The Merun maintained a complex social structure centred on communal hive-settlements called Stocks and played a vital ecological role on their homeworld, maintaining the planet's seismic balance.

The destruction of Zoe in 2499--2500, when Max von Valdec's deployment of the Kaiser Force transmitter caused the sun Spilter to go nova, almost certainly annihilated the Merun along with their entire biosphere -- a catastrophe in which they bore no part and had no voice.

Physical Description

The Merun are insectoid beings -- arthropod-like creatures whose bodies are armoured with a chitinous exoskeleton. Key physical characteristics include:

  • Chitin Exoskeleton: The Merun possess a hardened outer shell typical of insectoid species. Their chitin is sturdy enough to be fashioned into weapons such as the Chitinspieß (chitin spear) and the Wurfspieß (throwing spear), indicating it is a material of considerable strength and density.
  • Multiple Limbs: As insectoid creatures, the Merun possess more than the human complement of limbs, consistent with their classification as arthropod-like organisms.
  • Imposing Stature: Certain Merun individuals, such as Shelzan the Caller, are described as "imposing," suggesting significant physical size or presence, at least among higher-ranking members of the species.

The Merun share their world with other insectoid and arthropod fauna, including the predatory Orzorn and the dangerous Merunier, though these are distinct species rather than Merun castes.

Social Structure

Merun society is organised along a eusocial model reminiscent of terrestrial insect colonies, but with a level of intelligence, culture, and individual agency that places them firmly among sentient species. Their social organisation comprises several distinct castes and roles:

Stocks (Stöcke)

The fundamental unit of Merun civilisation is the Stock (plural: Stöcken) -- a large communal hive-settlement, described as a massive structure or natural formation where Merun reside. Each Stock functions as an autonomous community with its own population, territory, and internal hierarchy. Stocks are located across Zoe's surface, including in the region known as the Platten Land (Flat Land).

Notable Stocks include:

Drones (Drohnen)

Drones (German: Drohne) are Merun who live apart from the Stocks, existing as solitaries or wanderers beyond the communal settlements. The Drone O'olkoy serves as a guide to Cruben the Heard during his expedition to the border mountains, suggesting that Drones, despite their solitary existence, maintain contact with Stock-dwelling Merun and possess specialised knowledge of the wilderness -- particularly the dangerous terrain between and beyond the Stocks.

The Watchful Ones (Wachsame / Wachsamen)

The Wachsamen (Watchful Ones) appear to be a caste or social group within Merun society responsible for guarding and overseeing the Stocks. The rank of Watchful One (Wachsamer) is attested as a title for guards stationed at tunnel entrances to the Stocks, indicating that the Merun settlements are at least partially subterranean and require sentinels. The designation Watchful of Merun (Wachsamen von Merun) refers specifically to Cruben's people, suggesting this may be both a caste designation and a cultural identity.

The Heard (Erhörten)

The Erhörten (the Heard) are described as insect-like creatures that may represent a caste or life-cycle stage within Merun society. The title "the Heard" (der Erhörte) attached to Cruben's name indicates a specific social rank or spiritual designation -- one who has been "heard" or "heeded," perhaps by the Stock or by some higher authority within Merun culture. The Erhörten von Ai Orn (the Heard of Ai Orn) appears to be a specific lineage or group within the Stock of Ai Orn.

The Callers (Rufer)

The title Caller (Rufer) is borne by Shelzan the Caller (Shelzan dem Rufer), an imposing Merun who confronts Cruben. The Caller role appears to involve authority and possibly a function analogous to a herald, leader, or spiritual figure within the Stock hierarchy.

Culture and Customs

The Gathering of Späne

A central element of Merun culture is the gathering of Späne -- fragments or shavings of Lichtauge, the Merun name for Zoe's sun (Spilter). These solar fragments appear to be crystallised or solidified pieces of starlight that can be found in the Border Mountains on Zoe's surface. Gathering Späne for one's Stock is a perilous undertaking that requires journeying through dangerous wilderness terrain inhabited by predators such as the Orzorn and the Merunier.

Cruben the Heard's expedition to the Border Mountains to collect Späne for the Stock of Ai Orn is the primary narrative through which Merun culture is revealed (Booklet 011). The journey carries elements of a rite of passage or sacred duty, emphasising the Merun's deep spiritual connection to their sun.

Relationship to Lichtauge

The Merun refer to their sun not by the human designation Spilter but by their own name: Lichtauge (Light Eye). This name reflects a cosmological understanding in which the sun is perceived as a living, watchful presence -- an eye of light overseeing the world. Associated concepts include:

  • Lichtauge's Night Rest (Lichtauges Nachtruhe) -- The Merun term for sunset, personifying the sun's daily disappearance as a period of rest.
  • Ice Fogs (Eisnebel) -- Cold fogs that drift from the glaciers when Lichtauge disappears, representing a natural hazard during the sun's absence.
  • Späne -- The solar fragments gathered by the Merun, suggesting a belief that pieces of the sun's essence can be physically collected and returned to the Stock.

Weapons and Technology

The Merun employ weapons crafted from organic materials native to their world:

  • Chitinspieß -- A spear made of chitin, capable of piercing the tough hide of an Orzorn. This suggests the Merun process their own shed exoskeletons or those of other arthropod species into functional weapons.
  • Wurfspieß -- A throwing spear used by the Merun, indicating proficiency in ranged combat.

Symbiotic Fauna

The Kleiner Bruder (Little Brother) is a small, twelve-legged creature with a specific connection to the Merun. The name suggests a relationship of familiarity or symbiosis -- a companion animal or perhaps a creature with cultural or spiritual significance to the Merun, analogous to a domesticated species.

Ecology and Role on Zoe

The Merun are described as maintaining Zoe's seismic balance -- a remarkable ecological function suggesting that they are not merely inhabitants of their world but active participants in its geological stability. The precise mechanism by which an insectoid species could influence planetary seismology is not elaborated in the sources, but it implies a profound, possibly symbiotic relationship between the Merun and Zoe's tectonic systems. This role elevates the Merun from simple fauna to a keystone species -- one whose removal could destabilise the planet itself.

Homeworld: Zoe

The Merun's homeworld, Zoe, orbits the sun Spilter (Lichtauge) in the Spilter System. Zoe was a habitable terrestrial world with diverse geography including:

  • Porto Novo -- A major human city
  • B'ai Ching / Grottos of B'ai Ching -- Underground cave systems used by the Drivers
  • Border Mountains -- A mountain range traversed by the Merun on gathering expeditions
  • Platten Land -- Flat, open terrain where Merun Stocks are located
  • Glaciers -- Source of the Ice Fogs that descend when Lichtauge sets

The planet served simultaneously as the political capital of the Lodge Masters and the ancestral homeland of the Merun. Whether the Merun and the human colonists coexisted peacefully, maintained separate territories, or had any formal diplomatic relationship is not explicitly detailed, though the parallel narrative of Booklet 011 -- in which Cruben's journey through the Merun wilderness runs alongside the human political drama on the same planet -- implies a largely separate existence, two civilisations sharing a world but inhabiting different spheres.

Relationship with Human Colonists

The Merun's relationship with the human Drivers and colonists on Zoe appears to have been one of coexistence at a distance. The narrative of Booklet 011 presents Cruben's expedition and the Drivers' political crisis as parallel stories unfolding on the same planet but in different worlds -- the Merun in the wilderness of the Border Mountains and the Platten Land, the humans in Porto Novo and the Grottos of B'ai Ching.

The human characters on Zoe -- Asen-Ger, David terGorden, Jose Javage -- make no reference to the Merun in their political deliberations, and the Merun narrative makes no reference to the human conflict overhead. The guards at the Stock tunnels use the word "Merun" as an address when speaking to Cruben, suggesting a self-referential species name rather than one assigned by humans.

This separation is tragically significant: when Max von Valdec ordered the siege and destruction of Zoe, the Merun -- who had no stake in the conflict between Drivers and the Council of Corporations -- were swept into an annihilation they neither caused nor understood.

The Destruction of Zoe and the Fate of the Merun

When Valdec's Kaiser Force transmitter destabilised the sun Spilter, causing it to go nova (Booklet 012), Zoe was utterly destroyed. The handful of human survivors -- David terGorden, Asen-Ger, Queen Mandorla, and a few others -- escaped in the courier ship TASCA moments before the end. No evacuation of the Merun is recorded. No Merun refugees appear in subsequent booklets.

The Merun are presumed extinct -- an entire intelligent species, with its Stocks and Drones, its Watchful Ones and Callers, its traditions of Späne-gathering and sun-worship, erased as collateral damage in a human war. Their loss is never formally mourned in the saga's narrative, making it one of the most quietly devastating consequences of Valdec's campaign against the Drivers.

The reference in Booklet 035, "The Pirate Lodge," to "the events following the destruction of Zoe" confirms that no Merun survival is known in the post-Zoe timeline.

Appearances

The Merun feature or are referenced in the following booklets:

  • 011 -- Primary appearance. Cruben the Heard's journey to the Border Mountains; introduction of Merun society, Stocks, Drones, and native fauna.
  • 012 -- Destruction of Zoe and, implicitly, the Merun.
  • 035 -- References to events following Zoe's destruction.

Significance

The Merun occupy a unique position in the narrative of Die Terranauten. They are the saga's most fully realised indigenous alien species encountered on a human-colonised world, yet they remain peripheral to the human drama that determines their fate. Their story -- told almost entirely through the single subplot of Cruben the Heard's expedition in Booklet 011 -- serves as a counterpoint to the political machinations of Valdec, the Drivers, and the Gray Guards.

Where the human characters fight over the control of PSI powers, space travel, and galactic politics, the Merun pursue an ancient and elemental life: gathering fragments of their sun, defending their Stocks against predators, navigating the wilderness with the help of solitary Drones. The juxtaposition is deliberate. The Merun embody a civilisation in harmony with its world -- maintaining Zoe's seismic balance, naming their sun as a living eye, crafting weapons from their own chitin -- while the human civilisation that shares their planet is locked in a conflict that will destroy everything.

The extinction of the Merun stands as one of the saga's unspoken tragedies: a species lost not to any failure of their own but to the reckless ambition of Max von Valdec and the destructive potential of the Kaiser Force. They are the silent casualties of a war they never joined.
